While the word “ordinary” in popular usage is used to describe things that are nondescript or dull, ordinary rather means customary, regular, and orderly. Ordinary Time may also be called Ordinal Time, which means numbered time. Ordinal comes from the Latin “ordinalis,” which is a word meaning “showing order, denoting an order of succession.” Hence, Ordinary Time is the standard, orderly, counted time outside of the other liturgical seasons.

What is Ordinary Time? Ordinary time is the longest liturgical season in the Catholic Church, encom-passing either thirty-three or thirty-four weeks each year. Because other litur-gical seasons begin or end with movable feasts, the length of Ordinary time can vary slightly; however, thirty-three weeks is the more common length. The weeks are numbered, e.g., the first Sunday of Ordinary Time, the second Sun-day of Ordinary Time, and so on. Ordinary time is technically one liturgical season, though it is divided into two periods. Prior to the Second Vatican Council, when the term “Ordinary Time” was formally established, the two time periods were merely referred to as “the Season after Epiphany” and “the Season after Pentecost.” The liturgical color of Ordinary Time is green; however, other appropriate col-ors are worn on particular feast days.

Season after Epiphany or Ordinary Time after the Baptism

The period of Ordinary Time used to be referred to as the Season after Epiph-any. That title and the sometimes-used titles “Season after the Baptism” or “Ordinary Time after the Baptism” are still useful in identifying the time period. While the Epiphany and the Baptism are celebrated on separate days, the two descriptions (after Epiphany and after the Baptism) are not contradicto-ry. In the modern Roman rite, Epiphany is celebrated on the first Sunday after January 1 and the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated the following Sunday. Prior to Vatican II, Epiphany was celebrated January 6, whether a Sunday or a weekday, and the Baptism was celebrated on the Octave of the Epipha-ny, which would be January 13. Where the title “Season after Epiphany” was used, the phrase was inclusive of the Octave of the Epiphany - January 13 - therefore indicating that Ordinary time started the day after the Baptism was celebrated. Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time— June 10, 2018 10

Continued from front page…. I have prayed to the Lord to see your godly faces and I have perse-vered in prayer until I have been granted this — for I hope to greet you, as a prisoner in Christ Jesus, if only I am found worthy to reach the end of my journey. Things have begun well and all now depends on my receiving the grace to reach my goal and receive my inheritance unhindered. But I fear your love for me and I fear the harm it can do me: it is so easy for you to do what you want and so hard for me to reach God if you do not spare me your help. You habitually do what pleases God: do what pleases him now and not what pleases men. I shall never have a better opportunity of reaching God, and you will never have the opportunity of performing a better act than now, by keeping silence. If you remain silent, I shall become the word of God; but if your love of my physical life makes you speak, I shall be nothing but a meaningless cry. Grant me nothing more than this: that I should be poured out to God, while an altar is still ready for me. Form yourselves into a chorus of love and sing praise to the Fa-ther in Christ Jesus for permitting this bishop of Syria to be sum-moned from the place of the sun’s rising to the sunset lands. Just as the sun sets only to rise again, how good it is to set to this world, to set and then to rise in God.

Family Day Update

Our parish family day went very well and everyone left so happy, in fact, some wanted to stay even longer. All in all there were about eighty people (counting children) which included our Focolare families and focolarine. It was just a joyful day for everyone. The theme was on the Art of Lov-ing in Family Life with personal experiences. People loved the experiences because they help in showing how to live that point. In the afternoon the families played games that caused them to work together. Parents were having as much fun as the kids

playing with their children and all the others there. We look forward to having another day like this in the future.

Prayer for the Family O God of goodness and mercy,

to Thy fatherly guidance we commend our family,

our household and all our belongings.

We commit all to Thy love and keeping; do Thou fill this house

with Thy blessings even as Thou didst fill

the holy House of Nazareth with Thy presence.

Amen.

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time— June 10, 2018 11

Continued from page 2... This period of Ordinary Time lasts until the day before Ash Wednesday, which is Shrove Tuesday. This portion of Ordinary Time focuses on the childhood of Jesus and then on the public ministry of Christ.

Season after Pentecost or Ordinary Time

after Pentecost The second portion of Ordinary Time begins after Pentecost and is much longer than the first. This second peri-od of Ordinary Time lasts from the day after Pentecost through the final day before Advent. Because this portion of Ordinary Time occurs after the celebrations of Jesus’s Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension, this segment of Ordinary Time is focused on the Age of the Church. The Age of the Church is the age we live in now, the time that exists be-tween the Age of the Apostles and the second and last coming of Christ for which we are preparing. This period of Ordinary Time is also focused on Christ’s reign as King of kings; the Feast of Christ the King caps off the season of Ordinary Time as the final Sunday before Advent begins.

Don’t forget to make your pledge to the Diocesan Services Fund. The DSF supports numerous apostolates and works of mercy throughout the Archdio-cese of Galveston-Houston.

Our parish is already off to a good start, surpassing last’s year’s pledges up to this point. Over five hundred families of SEAS have already made a pledge. Won’t you join them?

For more information go to: http://www.archgh.org/DSF/. Pledge envelopes are also available at the parish office.

On Saturday, June 16, 2018, in the CLC, the ACTS ministry we will be show-ing the movie, CLARE and FRANCIS, an exceptional portrayal of the lives of two of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church. This epic film tells the remarkable and moving story of St. Clare and St. Francis of Assisi. Clare, the daughter of a patrician family, and Francis, the son of a rich merchant, leave all to follow Christ. Both founded major reli-gious orders and the stories of their lives continue to inspire today. Don’t miss this opportunity to gather for fellowship, entertainment, refresh-ments, and to be moved by the amazing stories of St. Clare and St. Fran-cis! Additional Clare and Francis DVDs will be available for purchase and pro-ceeds will benefit the ACTS retreat scholarships. Food, Drinks and Snacks will be provided. Tickets are available in the SEAS church office for a donation of $5 per seat. Doors open up at 6:00 PM and the movie will start at 7:00 PM. Seats are limited so get them soon! For more information contact: Dolores Nevares @ 713-582-3100.

Thanksgiving After Mass St. Thomas Aquinas Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mer-cy, You have fed me with the Precious Body & Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salva-tion. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good. May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impuls-es, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with You. And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and holy Spirit, are true and per-fect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. grant this through Christ our Lord, AMEN. Prayer for our Country God, our Father, giver of life, We entrust our nation to your loving care. Your are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for your glory and dwell among your people. Send your spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing your will. Through the intercession of Mary Immacu-late, patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death”. Lead us into a new millennium of life. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. AMEN.

Would you like to memorialize a loved one or offer a gift of thanksgiving to God in gratitude for graces re-ceived? You are invited to consider sponsoring the altar flowers for a weekend. ST. BARNABAS JUNE 11 A Jew, born in Cyprus and named Joseph, he sold his property, gave the proceeds to the Apostles, who gave him the name Barnabas, and lived in common with the earliest converts to Christianity in Jerusalem. He persuaded the community there to accept Paul as a disciple, was sent to Antioch, Syria, to look into the community there, and brought Paul there from Tarsus. When a dispute arose regarding the observance of the Jewish rites, Paul and Barnabas went to Jerusalem, where, at a council, it was decided that pagans did not have to be circumcised to be baptized. Later on, Barnabas returned to Cyprus with Mark, his cousin; nothing further is heard of him in the Scriptures. Barnabas was probably stoned to death at Salamis about the year 61.
