    RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Catechists Needed for the 2018-19 School Year

The classes in our Religious Education program are taught by volunteers; they are called catechists. Catechists are called by the Holy Spirit to pass on the faith. Have you ever considered being part of this ministry? There are a few requirements: 1) the desire to pass on the faith of the Catholic Church, 2) the desire to work with young people and 3) fulfilling the Child Protection Policy requirements of the Archdiocese of Washington. There are manuals and other resources available to support catechists in their ministry. Currently there is the need for the following Catechists: Kindergarten and Levels 1 and 3 on Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 7:45 Please pray to discern if the Holy Spirit is calling you for one of these opportunities. Contact Maureen Curtis at [email protected] or 301 249-9199 (Monday to Friday 9:00am-4:00pm) to volunteer or with any questions.

Registration for Religious Education classes (CCD) for the 2018-19 school year is on-going. All families must re-register every year. If your child was registered during the 2017-18 school year, late fees now apply. Registration instructions and forms can be found in the hall in the classroom area or on the parish website: www.stedwardbowie.com. You can also register on-line. All children who do not attend Catholic school should participate in the Religious Education program. Students are prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation within the program. Please contact Maureen Curtis at (301) 249-9199 (Monday to Friday 9:00am-4:00pm) or e-mail at [email protected] with any questions you might have.

  • TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME—AUGUST 26, 2018

From the Desk of Rev. Scott Holmer I would like to thank all of those, especially the Community Building Committee, for all of their hard work in preparing for my Installation Mass and reception this Sunday. I am so deeply honored to be installed your pastor here at St. Edward’s. It has been a tough

couple of weeks being a priest or even a Catholic with all of the bad press that the Church has been getting. I gave a difficult homily last week about it and I was overwhelmed and humbled by your support. As our seminarian Christian Huebner put it so well in his last reflection with us: "We are one family in Christ Jesus." Jesus says in the Scriptures this weekend what it takes to make a family. Jesus says that husbands should be willing to die for their wives as Jesus died for the Church. This would have been as scandalously progressive in Jesus' day as His other saying, "wives should be subordinate to their husbands," seems as scandalously regressive in our day. However, there is a timeless deeper motivation to the sacrifice of the husband and the obedience of the wife - love. When a husband is willing to sacrifice for his wife out of love, seeing his virtue, his wife is willing to let him lead. And when a wife is willing to be subordinate to her husband, it stirs the husband's heart to lay down his life for his wife. In the family of faith, a pastor should be willing to die, to lay down his life, for his spouse the Church. In my case, I look forward to laying down my life for all of you here at St. Edward’s since I have come to know and love you so much. I am so glad you have welcomed me here at St. Edward’s and I look forward to our years together as one family in Christ Jesus. God Bless, Fr. Scott
