December 2013
Farewell to our 21 Eddfield Avenue school building ! Dear Parents and Guardians, As most of you know, we will be moving to our new school
building at 1 Botham Rd. when classes resume after Christmas break on January 6, 2014. Its official and we are all excited! St. Edward Catholic School has provided a quality Catholic education in the Yonge/Sheppard community for 90 years. The original St. Edward School was located on Greenfield Ave., the current site of Cardinal Carter Academy. The school has been at our present Eddfield Ave. location since 1984. So many people have worked tirelessly over the years to make our new school building a reality: our trustee Maria Rizzo, senior board staff, former St. Edward principals, current and former staff members, current and past St. Edward parents and other community supporters. Thank you to all. Our present 21 Eddfield Ave. location contains almost 30 years of good memories. Many of our current and former parents were also students at this location. St. Edward’s is, in many ways, similar to a large but very close family. Everyone knows each other, and we continue to work very diligently to provide the best in Catholic education for our students. We are looking forward to continuing this tradition in our new school in January. We are pleased to have a wonderful school facility that will be of great benefit to our students and to our community. However, we remain committed to the goals and traditions established 90 years ago, in 1923: to provide our students with academic excellence as they journey in our Catholic faith. Please join us for our Open House on December 10, to reminisce about the great things that have happen at 21 Eddfield Ave. By mid- December, we will be sending you more information about our new school, including bus routes, school routines, etc. We will provide an orientation to students with pictures and presentations about our new building. I wish you and your families a blessed Christmas with health and happiness in 2014! Thanks again for all your support. God bless! Anthony DeCiantis

ELP/1 - Ms. Larracey & Mr. Schirripa In the month of November, the ELP class has been
spelling and chanting the names of each of their
classmates, reviewing letter sounds and sounding out
words. They are beginning to learn and recognize
sight words. On Remembrance Day, we read the
book “A Poppy is to Remember” by Heather
Patterson and discussed the meaning of peace and
friendship. With the arrival of the cold weather and
snow, the students continue to work on entrance and
dismissal routines such as getting dressed in snow
pants and boots. We encourage parents to continue
to work with your child on putting on snow boots and
snowsuits in an independent fashion. Please
remember to send mittens, hats, gloves and scarves
with your child as the
temperatures drop.
Please send two extra
pairs of socks in a
ziplock bag in case your
child‟s socks get wet.
The students greatly
enjoyed the trip to see
Aladdin on Nov.26,
2013. We would like to thank our dedicated parent
volunteers, Mrs. Acuna, Mrs. Ianes, Mrs. Naylor,
Mrs. Reekie, Mr. Cordoba and Mrs. Cazzolli. We
would also like to thank Mrs. Acuna for her
assistance with the morning entrance routine and
Mrs. Da Barp for her help with the Scholastic book

the ELP program. Please mark your calendars for
the following dates; the See Hear Clinic on Dec. 5, a
P.A. day on Dec. 20 and Pizza lunch on Dec. 4 and
Dec. 18.
ELP/2 - Mrs. Rodriguez and Mrs. Stagno November is a Time to Encourage Peace in ELP-2
We began our month with a focus how to be a
„peacemaker‟ in our class and not a „peace breaker‟.
We continue to add ideas each day as we all strive
to be peacemakers in our class. We made poppies
and attended the school Remembrance Day
ceremony in the gym. We are currently talking
about the different feelings that God has given us
the ability to experience. Our goal
is to learn to identify how people
are feeling by looking at their
facial expressions and body
posture as well as listening to
their words.
Each student has now had the opportunity to be the
„Star of the Day‟ one time. We have begun each
student‟s second turn to be the „Star‟. The
students are now beginning their day with a morning
message which challenges them to find out who the
„Star of the Day‟ is. Students are given the number
of letters in the „Star‟s‟ name and they must find
out „Star‟s‟ name by guessing which letters spell the
„Star‟s‟ name. The „Star‟ has been given the
responsibilities of helping with attendance, and
leading the calendar activities.
We have continued with our investigation of Apples
and we have discovered that apples float when
placed in a container of water. This has led to an
inquiry of which objects float and which do not.
The students continue to explore the concept of
float and sink using a variety of objects. We have
used apples to measure how tall we are and we have
continued our investigation of weight using small
pumpkins and balances. In all our investigations,
the students have been encouraged to make
predictions and record their observations. Our apple
inquiry will end with apple tasting and recording of
our likes and dislikes of different apples. We have started to explore patterns this month.
The students are using our math materials to create
patterns. We will also be exploring patterns using
movement and art materials.
The highlight this month was definitely the trip to
the Markham Theatre to enjoy the production of
„Aladdin.‟ Our class would like to thank Mrs.
Mazzitti for arranging this theatre experience for
the entire school. As well, we would like to thank
the parents who volunteered their time to come and
supervise the students on this trip. Our trip was a
wonderful opportunity to learn about live theatre.
We sat so close to the stage that the students
noticed what was happening on stage every time it
became dark in the theatre. They saw how the
actors and scenery changed. The students loved
the interactive nature of the performance. It was
a wonderful learning experience which taught them
a lot about how live theater works.
Mrs. Stagno has been working very hard with the
students to create artwork to decorate the gym for
our school Christmas open house on December 10th.
Advent begins this weekend. Our focus during the
Christmas season is the preparation for Jesus‟
birthday which will culminate with a birthday party
celebration for Jesus on Thursday, December 19th.
We wish you and your family a peaceful and joyful
Christmas season. We also look forward to an
exciting New Year in our new school.
S. Rodriguez & G. Stagno
ELP/3 – Mrs. Sabatini and Miss Russo
The cold weather and snow is
upon us! The students are
trying to be as independent
as possible with dressing and
undressing. Please encourage
the same practice at home.
Please ensure your child has
two extra pairs of socks. In addition, please label
all footwear and clothing!
During the month of November, the students
shared their ideas on how to be peaceful. We
created a list of these ideas which we review and
talk about daily so that we can be the best we can
be at all times.
In Math, the students have been working on sorting
by colour, size and shape. In language, the students
have participated in shared reading activities about
peace and songs of peace.
The trip to the Markham Theatre was fantastic!
Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their
time to make things run smoothly!
Looking ahead…Advent begins on December 1st, mass
on December 4th at 1:30, Pizza lunch on December
4th, See/Hear Clinic on December 5th, Open House
on December 10th, Pizza lunch on December 18th, and
P.A. Day on December 20th.
Grade 1 – Ms. Obljubek November was a month
of much work in the
grade one class. During
math, we continued with
our graphing and began
composing addition and
subtraction stories. We continued to improve our
sentence writing and putting sentences together to
form simple paragraphs using descriptive words and
action words. Our reading is also getting stronger
and we are now reading and retelling simple folk
tales. Our month ended with a great excursion to
Markham theatre to see Aladdin. Of course, we will
be retelling this tale in the classroom. Thank you to
the parents who came along to help us have a safe
trip! We look forward to getting ready for Advent
and Christmas with crafts, songs and stories.
Grade 1 – Mrs. Gascho
What another busy month in
Grade 1. We enjoyed the
Alladin play at the Markham
theatre and thank all parents
for helping us experience a
wonderful presentation. In
Language will learn about the
“Yellow Brick Road” to story
retelling. More information to be given in their
weekly reading responses. We will be writing and
mailing our letters to Santa. In Math, we have just
completed our unit on beginning addition and
subtraction and have been introduced to linear
measurement. We have completed our Science Unit
on Seasonal Changes with most students completing
and presenting wonderful projects. We are looking
forward to our Scientist in the School presentation
on “Structures, Under Construction”. Please send in
newspapers not in use for this activity. Thank you to
CSAC for covering the cost of this very educational
experience. In Religion the students are preparing
their advent wreaths in preparation for the coming
of Our Lord Jesus. We also will be making an angel
mosaic to be displayed for our Farewell Open House.
Just a gentle reminder to please send in a box of
tissue. The students get a lot of runny and stuffy
noses with the colder weather and our supply has
depleted. Wishing everyone a Holy Christmas and
Happy New Year. We will see you all at the new
school.
Grade 2 – Mr. Habib Thank you for attending parent-teacher interviews
over the past two weeks! I appreciate the
opportunity to gain insight into my students, and to
get to know their families better. Although the
formal interviews are over, I am always available to
address your questions or concerns through agendas
or the phone. In November the students had an
opportunity to participate in the Remembrance Day
Ceremony at North York Cemetery. It was a great
experience. They also had a chance to watch Aladdin
play. The show was wonderful and the kids had fun
and they enjoyed the interaction.
December is going to be another very busy month
with the Christmas
season, and the
preparation for moving
to the new school. The
students are very
excited for that and we
have lots of fun
activities planned for
this month.
Literacy/ Reading: Students spent time in
November learning about retelling all of the facts
of the story in order of beginning, middle and end of
long ago and far away tales. They also learned to
use different tone of voice to communicate a
message in a variety of texts. In December,
students will be planning and writing stories using
pictures as own imagination. We will use the
characteristics of long ago and far away tales. We
will focus on using complete sentences and two or
three events in the story for details.
Writing: The students are learning how to write a
friendly letter. They are learning to plan, write,
revise, edit and publish. In Math, students are
practicing addition and subtraction using fact family
and different strategies, such as “doubling”, “double
plus one”, “ten frames”, etc.. It is important for
your child to practice every night to master this
skill. We will be starting our measurements unit.
Reminders: Please make sure that your child comes
to school each day with mittens, winter coats, snow
pants and a hat. Please label these items with your
name to avoid any mix-ups.
Wishing you all a blessed Advent season which
commemorates the Incarnation of our Lord!
Grade 2 – Ms. Soradi November was another busy month for the Grade 2
students. The students received their Progress
Reports, which allowed them to see the progress
that they have made so far this term and to set
goals for the rest of the term/year. A special
focus was on Remembrance Day and peace. The
students engaged in a variety of activities related
to those themes, such as
reading, letter writing, poetry
and art. In math, we finished
our unit on Data Management (a
special focus was on surveys
and graphs) and started a new
unit on Addition and
Subtraction. The students worked very hard on
their Ugly Sticks projects. They each designed and
made their very own Ugly Stick, wrote about it, and
then presented it. On the 26th, we had the
opportunity to watch a life performance titled,
“Aladdin” at the Markham Theatre. We would like to
thank CSAC for covering the cost of transportation
and our parent volunteers, Mrs. Claveria and Mr.
Pereira for accompanying us.
Ms. E. Soradi
Grade 3 Ms. Mazzitti This month students continue to work on various
themes; Aboriginal life and Early Settlers,
Cyberspace rules, Bully Prevention and Data
Management. Students have presented their mini
research assignments on
the Aboriginal people and
we learned a lot from
their presentation. We
enjoyed our trip to the
Markham Theatre viewing
the performance
“Aladdin”. Students were
fully engaged and entertained. We would like to
thank all the parents who volunteered to help
supervise with each class. Christmas is on its way
and we are anticipating the arrival of Santa and will
be writing letters to Santa soon. We will also be
preparing ourselves for the arrival of Jesus as we
will begin some Advent activities. We are looking
forward to our trip to Pioneer Village and our first
skating excursion coming soon in December.
A. Mazzitti
Grade 3/4 – Ms. Gerardi ‘Tis the Season! It already feels like winter, can you
believe it‟s still actually the season of autumn? Ms.
Gerardi‟s class welcomed November by raising
approximately $850.00 for the Halloween dance-a-
thon. For a class of 13 students, this is an amazing
accomplishment!! Thank you to everyone for your
generous pledges! A BIG thank you to Mrs. Aliferis
for her pledges and coming and dancing the day
away with our students!
There is so much in store for
December! In the first week
of December, students will
vote for their first grade 3/4
class council! Students
worked so diligently on their
campaigns including making posters and a speech!
Congratulations to all candidates!
On December 11, we will go on an adventure to Black
Creek Pioneer Village, living the life of Early
Settlers! The very next day, we will go to the Royal
Ontario Museum, a “first” for many grade 3/4
students! We will travel through different galleries
and participate in an activity about Early
Civilizations in Greece and Rome! Oh boy!!
The first week of December marks the beginning of
the Advent season. Students will be learning about
the preparation and joyful expectation of Jesus‟
birth. Before you know it, it will be winter vacation
where we will ring in 2014! Wishing all families a
safe and warm Merry Christmas and Happy New
Year! See you January 6th at the new school!!
(EXCITED!!)
-Ms. Gerardi
Grade 4 Mr. Gerardi There‟s only one more month until the BIG move to
the new school. We‟re all excited. Are you? The
grade 4 students have had an amazing November.
On the 11th, a soldier from the Canadian Armed
Forced came to our school to tell us about what he
does in the army. Did you know that Mr. Gerardi
taught him in Grade 5? His name is Master Corporal
Jesus Castillo. Ms. Gerardi was also in his class at
the time. Right after the assembly, we went to the
York Cemetery to celebrate Remembrance Day. We
had a moment of silence at 11:00. We also took
pictures with the soldiers in front of an enormous
tank. In class, we read a book called Sadako and
the 1000 Paper Cranes. We learned about Japanese
culture and how they celebrate Remembrance Day.
It called Peace Day. It is celebrated on August 6. A
courageous girl named Sadako died of leukemia from
an atomic bomb which was dropped by the US during
WW2. She tried to fold 1000
paper cranes. If she succeeded,
the gods would grant her a special
wish. You‟ll have to read the novel
to find out if she did it. Last week
the class went to the Markham
Theatre to watch a play called
Aladdin. It was a fairy tale. It was
awesome. This week we are writing
to Santa Claus. That means that Christmas is right
around the corner. Do you know what you want for
Christmas? We know. We are looking forward to
going to the ROM next month. We will be
presenting our Habitat project to the class this
week. We hope you enjoyed reading this. Have a
delightful December!
By: Stella, Victoria, and Dora
Grade 5 Ms. Krotofil This November was a blast! On
November 11th, we had a
Remembrance Day ceremony.
Grades one to eight walked to
the York Cemetery to see all of
the great soldiers who served in
war. While we were there, we
sang songs and watched the soldiers who gave
speeches about Remembrance Day. In Mathematics,
we continued each day to solve the PROBLEM OF
THE DAY. We used our goal and success criteria
find a solution to each problem. In Language, we
used graphic organizers to help us create Christmas
stories. We even used our descriptive feedback to
edit and publish our wonderful stories! In our rosary
class with Mrs. Chan, we learned about the joyful
mysteries. Also, this month, Ms. K. brought in lots
of donated books for our new and improved
classroom library. With Mrs. Scanga‟s help, we
received many new Scholastic books too! We really
love reading in our class! Finally at the end of the
month, we went to the Markham Theatre to see
ALADDIN, a spectacular dramatic presentation!!!
PS: DO YOU HAVE ANY USED BOOKS THAT YOU
WOULD LIKE TO DONATE TO THE GRADE 5
CLASSROOM LIBRARY??? If you have any books,
please let Ms. K. know. It would be really, really
appreciated!!! By: Patricia and Brooklyn
Grade 6 Mr. Scali
This November has been
spectacular! In math we finished a
chapter on adding and subtracting
numbers with decimals. We have
now started the next chapter,
which focuses on measurement.
For language the class read a fascinating story
called “The Most Dangerous Game”, and we are now
working on our letters. In science, we did an
experiment with meal worms. We made
observations, and set up a racing experiment. Also,
some of us got to take them home! On November
11th our class went to a Remembrance Day ceremony,
which was unforgettable! We all went to the
cemetery and listened to poems and sang songs.
Recently, we went to the Markham Theatre to see
the play “Aladdin”. It was fun and entertaining! So
as you can see, our November was a great one! Until
December, Ciao! - Emma and Alessia
Grade 7 – Ms. Vecchiarelli Tis‟ the season to be BUSY fa la la la la, la, la, la,
la!!!!! Busy is better than bored! First off, I‟d like
to congratulate all the students in the Grade 7
classroom for their hard work completing the
Christmas Art Posters for our Christmas Community
Gathering to be held December 10th, 2013. The
students are preparing for the big move to the new
school in January 2014 and many things that will not
be used until the new year are already packed and
ready to go. The
students finished the
unit on Patterns in
Mathematics and their
unit on Place and
Movement in Geography.
The students are
continuing with their
first novel study and are
enjoying the literature circle group experience. The
students have begun a dance unit and have learned
some fundamental choreography movements (such as
the grapevine and pivot turn etc.) and are being
asked to create a small portion of choreography in a
group setting. The students have also begun to use
the e-learning website more frequently and although
patience is still required with this website, they are
finding the on-line lessons to be a new and enjoyable
learning experience.
Grade 8 – Mr. Capozzi In the first term of the
school year, the grade
eight class has been
doing numerous activities
such as: in Geography we
have just finish
population density and
have now started with
Economics, while in
science we have been working with cells and starting
osmosis and diffusion on e-learning which is an
online site for TCDSB. In art, the grade eights are
doing projects based on their understanding of
their geography and science abilities. In math we
finished algebra with algebraic expressions and
using scatter plots and starting area of a circle. In
language we have just finished out novel Holes by
Louis Sachar and doing projects based on what
happened in the book creativity, creative writing
and opinion. In French, we have just finished group
presentations of teaching the class about the people
of French history. It teaches us who the people are
and the perspective of a teacher, also group
cooperation.
In class we‟re during this Skype call which is, called
„Face to faith‟ which involves many children from the
ages of 12-18 all round the world. This program goes
to every subject but, mainly religion. During the
Skype call we talk about what we do in school and
talk about us individually. During an in-class session,
we got to Skype call a teacher from India.
In November the girls and the boys got to visit
their future high schools such as Loretto Abbey and
Brebeuf. The students got to feel what it is like to
learn in high school classes. On Tuesday the 26, the
grade eights attended the theoretical Aladdin play
in Markham along with other classes. Also another
activity the grade eight class had done was on
November 11th we went to the cemetery to for a
ceremony to appreciate the soldiers that fought us
in the war.

Mme. Ricciuto Décembre arrive avec toute la joie de la
saison.... c'est Noël !
In December all the primary grades will celebrate
the holiday season and Christmas through
vocabulary, stories, songs and art activities. The
grade 3 will illustrate their own mini French
Christmas story and practice reading in French.
The grade 6 students have completed writing,
editing and fabricating their own French magazine,
including interviews with each other and a famous
person of their selection. These books will be on
display at our new school in January.
Shopping is the topic in Grade 7, as the students
explore the imperative verb form, numbers and
dollars in French.
The grade 8 students have been learning about the
19th century in France. Many of today‟s common
items were invented or discovered during this
exciting time. Items such as “la poubelle »- the
garbage can, the process of pasteurization and the
design and construction of the Eiffel tower were all
part of this exciting time in history. The students
worked hard to prepare and present mini seminars
on various topics to their classmates. 21st century
learning was alive in these classes, as the students
used interactive activities like Jeopardy and trivia
games to engage their classmates.
Je vous souhaite un Joyeux Noël et les meilleurs
voeux pour le nouvel an.
I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year at
our new school !

Bonjour à tous! Dear
parents and students, I
am happy to announce
that the annual French
Book Fair «Le salon du
livre » is upon us. I have
been asked by some
parents about ways in
which we could further motivate students. The
annual French Book Fair is an excellent way to do so
and an important reminder that the French language
is alive and well. There are books and comics for all
ages as well as audio CDs and games.

7th 2013

The Season of Advent begins the weekend of November 30-December 1.
Advent Wreath Prayers First Sunday in Advent - Light the first purple candle. This is the Candle of Hope. It is a sign that God is with us, encouraging us on our way. Blessing for the First Candle: O, Lord, fill us with a longing for you. Help us to be open and eager, as we wait for your coming with joy and excitement. In the busy days ahead, keep us in your sight. Let us remember that it is you, our Lord, for whom we are preparing. Amen. Second Sunday in Advent - Light the first and the second purple candles. The second candle is the Candle of Peace. It is a reminder that Jesus came to share God’s peace with all. Blessing for the Second Candle: O, Lord, as we prepare for your coming, let us reflect your love in all we say and do. Encourage us to be people of peace and let your peace reign in our hearts and minds this Advent Season. Amen. Third Sunday in Advent - Light the first two purple candles and the pink candle, the Candle of Joy. It is a sign that God has promised us life in abundance. Blessing for the Third Candle: O, Lord, this is a time for caring and sharing. Help us open our hearts fully to others. Let our faces radiate the joy of your coming so that everyone we meet will know of you and the gift of life you bring. Amen. Fourth Sunday in Advent - light all the candles, the last one is called the Candle of
Love. It is a sign of God’s generous care and concern for all. Blessing for the Fourth Candle: O Lord, you are the Light of the World. Help us to see
your will. Always be with us so that we will come to know and love you in many ways.
Teach us to recognize you in those we meet and in all of creation. Amen
