As is fast becoming the norm, World Book Day at St Ed’s has morphed into Book Week and the usual flurry of activity evolved as the fascinating world of literacy swathed the daily routine. We were delighted to welcome world renowned authors, Sophia Bennett and Tim Knapman who led the children in workshops on story writing and how to inspire imagination. Sophia is famous for writing teenage reality stories, including “Love Song” which has been nominated for the Romantic Novel of the Year award 2017 and Tim’s best-selling story, Mungo and the Picture Book Pirates continues to be a best-seller. St. Ed’s was also fortunate enough to welcome Karl Newson, children’s author and illustrator who joined our very own Mr Budgen for a practicum on book illustration. Having described their illustrative visions to the children, Karl and Tim then involved the children by getting them to come up with their own story ideas where they had to illustrate the closing page. There were some fantastic creations! Later in the week, everyone took part in a brilliant literary themed treasure hunt around the school which was superbly organised by Jill Boyd, and Petworth Books generously gave their time once again to set up a pop-up book shop in the Dance and Drama Studio where a huge assortment of different books was on offer for all of the children to enjoy and purchase; the choice was immense. Of course World Book Day would not be complete without the customary dress up as your favourite story character and as ever, the diversity and creativity of costumes was simply brilliant! See some of the highlights over the page! Thank you to everyone for all of their hard work and effort in making ‘World Book Day Week’ such a fantastical literacy phenomenon. Form 5B’s assembly this term certainlyinspired you to get out there andchallenge yourself! Mr Balfour set hisclass a task just before Christmas, to setthemselves a challenge that will defytheir comfort zones. The children

certainly embraced the mission given tothem and, having logged their trainingand achievements, the childrenpresented their personal challenges tothe rest of the school. From 20k bikerides to 10k runs; swimming multiple

lengths to how many goals scored in anhour; how many cookies can be baked ina day to not playing on an ipad for aweek, the children did superbly! Welldone 5B on an incredibly motivationaland inspiring assembly.

Children in our Junior Assembly thisterm were treated to a mostprestigious talent contest as Form 4Tposed the question, “Out of our fourDivisional leaders, who is the best?”With Nelson, Scott, Wellington andClive taking to the stage, a contest ofquick fire questions followed as thehistoric rivals battled it out forsuperiority! Wellington even pushedthe limits with claiming that no otherleader present had a pop song namedafter one of his conquests, whereupon an engaging dance routineto Abba’s ‘Waterloo’ ensued! Afantastic performance by everyone inForm 4T, a great way to start the day!

What’s been going on .....

Who is the best?

Challenge Yourself

The GlobeOur Form 10s enjoyed a fantastictreat this term, visiting The GlobeTheatre in London to undertake adrama workshop exploring the scriptof Romeo and Juliet which was led by

one of the Globe’s leadingShakespearian actors. If that wasn’tenough, they were also treated to abackstage tour of the theatre …. notthat we’re jealous!

Currently studying religions of the worldin their RS classes, Form 3 were luckyenough to have a private tour of the ShahJahan Mosque in Woking this term, thefirst purpose built Mosque both in theUK and Northern Europe. Following theirtour, the guide then spoke to the childrenabout the Qur’an and its many chaptersand versus as well as the daily prayersthat take place at the mosque every day. It was a fantastic visit that certainly gavethe children a better understanding of themosque as well as Islam as a whole.

Is it fair?

Form 3 have spent this term learningabout Greek Mythology, so it was of nosurprise that during their visit toFarnham Pottery last week, Medusa wasthe firm favourite to create in clay. Asyou can see from the photos, everyonethoroughly enjoyed getting their fingers

dirty and the finished handiworkscertainly captured the monster that shewas. The Medusas will be fired in the kilnover the next few weeks and returned totheir rightful creator next term. Watchout Mums, your kitchen walls are aboutto receive the wrath of Medusa!

Medusa in Clay

Form 4R presented an incredibly thoughtprovoking assembly this term, raising thequestion, what is fair? Focussing on theincreasing contrast between rich andpoor around the world, the childrenhighlighted the plight of poverty thatmillions suffer versus the mega rich wholanguish in their 25,000 acre estates.Quoting the parable, “it will be easier fora camel to go through the eye of a needle

than for a rich person to enter heaven”,Form 4R concluded their assembly withthe following valuable advice, “being richand owning lots of things does notmake us any better or more importantthan anyone else in this world”. Thankyou Form 4R for highlighting thesnowballing dichotomy between wealthand poverty in this world, a vitalmessage for us all to understand.

Le Mystère de l’HotelNorbertWe were delighted to welcome PicklesTheatre this term, a French theatrecompany who performed Le Mystère del’Hotel Norbert to Forms 6, 7 and 8.Specialising in presenting the Frenchlanguage in a non-classroom-likeenvironment by using a real time visualform, the four actors presented anincredibly energetic and fun performance,if at times a little excentrique! (That isthe only French I shall use as my googletranslate tendencies annoy the Frenchdepartment!). Thank you to everyone atthe Pickles Theatre for sharing theirenthusiasm and expertise with St. Ed’s.

Form 10 hosted their assembly this termand it just happened to fall on PancakeDay. So, how best to celebrate? Topresent a plethora of fascinating facts onwhy we celebrate pancake day, whilst halfof the class make their own pancakes onstage! The Great British Bake off it wasnot, but for pure entertainment value andfor witnessing Mrs Adams and Mr BP asthe chief taste testers, it was goldstandard viewing! Thank you Form 10 forputting a smile on all of our faces so earlyon in the day!

Anyone for Pancakes?

Excitement levels hit an all-time high a fewweeks ago when Form 1 left the comfortof their classroom to visit The Weald andDown Open Air Museum in Singleton. The day certainly brought their historylessons to life as the children embarkedon a Victorian Household Choresworkshop, which gave them theopportunity to explore and consider whatit was like to be 6 years old in Victoriantimes. Situated in Whittaker’s Cottage, atypical farm labourer’s cottage of theVictorian period, everyone rolled up theirsleeves and took on a varied range ofhousehold activities which Victorianchildren would have been expected tohelp with, including making the beds, polishing and beating the rugs. (Alerting allForm 1 parents, your children thoroughlyenjoyed their chores and got well andtruly stuck in, so next time you have theconversation of “go and tidy your room”,#St. Ed’s has photographic evidence inyour favour!) After ayummy packed lunch, everyone had thechance of enjoying theearly spring sunshineand from the looks ofit the ducks had agreat time too!

Upstairs & Downstairs

Not satisfied with just reading about the Great Fire of London, Form 2 decided torecreate it this term thanks to some cardboard box house building, a sandpit anda match! It beats looking at a picture anyday!

The Great Fire of London

Many congratulations to Scott who wonthe Senior Divisional Model Makingcompetition and to Nelson who won it forthe Juniors! As always, an incredibly highstandard presented by everyone, well done.

Divisional ModelMaking CompetitionAs part of their science studies, Form 2

thoroughly enjoyed their recent trip tothe Look Out Discovery Centre inBracknell. With more than 90 hands-onscience and discovery activities, thechildren wasted no time getting stuck in!From discovering how hot air balloonswork to solving challenging problems, combined with a material workshop full ofexperiments and a climb to the very topof the look-out tower, the children had anawesome day with science literally at theirfinger-tips.

Form 2 Discovers!Following on from the success of ourBook Week, Form 5L hosted theirassembly on why they chose their bookcharacters to dress up as. Writing theirown scripts and coming up with theirown ideas, everyone presentedthemselves brilliantly as they took it inturns to explain why they dressed up asthey did. Congratulations Form 5L on ajob well done!

My favourite character

Form 4 swapped their schoolbooks for a pair of roman sandalsthis term, when their history fieldtrip took them to FishbourneRoman Palace. One of the largestRoman residences north of theAlps, Fishbourne has a largerfootprint than Buckingham Palaceand is now a modern museumincorporating most of the visibleremains including one wing of the palace and the gardens. The children thoroughly enjoyedtheir specially designed educationworkshops which included making theirown Roman mosaic, building an arch out

of roof tiles, spinning wool and writingtheir own Roman numerals. There waseven time left at the end of the day forsome dressing up – Hail Caesar!

Hail Caesar!

Form 6’s Charity Fayre

As part of their Englishcurriculum this term,Form 6 has beenlearning about the artof communication andthe means ofpersuasion. Whatbetter way to show offtheir newly honedknowledge than to hosttheir own CharityFayre! With theGeorge Bernard Shawroom chosen as theirlocation, the childrenbusied themselves withpreparing their stalls, complete withadvertising displays and branded give-aways. Their chosen charities includedBattersea Dogs Home, The Blue Cross,Water Aid, The Refugee Crisis Appeal andSave the Elephants. Embarking on theirprepared pitches on why their charitydeserved the most support, the energyand commitment amongst the stall-holderssoon resembled a Wall Street trading floor– incredibly impressive.

Form 7 were treated toa trip to Guildford’sYvonne Arnaud YouthTheatre this term to seethe adaptation of IanSerraillier’s The SilverSword. A wartime taleof courage, liberation

and kindness to strangers, the story istold cleverly in three acts, narrated bydifferent characters. The childrenthoroughly enjoyed the performancemade all the better by spotting two fellowpupils who starred in the show, namelyWill Parsonson who played Edek andArchie Wilson who played a refugee.

The Silver SwordForm 11 IGCSEDrama monologues

Counting towards 17% of their finalIGCSE grades this summer, our Form 11drama students presented their chosenmonologues to a packed audience earlierin the term. Their performances included“Nora” from “A Dolls House”; “Billy”from “Billy Liar”; “Michael” from“Someone to watch over me” and “Alan”from “Equus” to name a few. It was clearto see how hard everybody had workedas they portrayed a variety of emotionsthrough their orations. Well doneeveryone and fingers crossed!

Cotterill’s Easter BFunnies

Tunnels constructed, escape plans confirmed and rations divided, youmay have been mistaken in thinking the staff were planning to breakearly for Easter, but last Friday saw the welcome return of the mostpopular boarding night on this living earth, yup, you’ve guessed it …The Great Escape returned to St. Ed’s! As always, it’s never entirelyclear over who has the most fun the children or the staff, the latter most probably, buta huge high-five to Team Dick who successfully circumnavigated their way throughenemy lines to win their freedom.

It was destination Air Hop for our Senior Boarding Night this term, enough saidother than awesome!

Forms 3 and 4 Learning Outside the Classroomthis term embraced team building and the art ofcommunication. The children were split intoteams and given particular items that they had tomake using only their bodies. Promoting skillsincluding leadership and direction, the list ofthings to shape included a windmill, a house anda boat ….mmm from the photos, ‘a bundle’ musthave been on the list too!

HS2 Debate “The CuriousIncident of theDog in theNight-time”

“They” say the new high-speed rail link,HS2 is going to be more than just arailway. It is an unparalleled venture inmodern engineering where people allaround the country will benefit from theimproved connectivity between ourmajor centres of industry, learning andinnovation. Well for Mr Messina’s Form 8Geography class, they beg to differ.Currently learning about global trade andindustry, Mr Messina posed the question,

“are you for or against?” whereupon theclass divided into two groups and setabout clarifying their arguments as towhether it was a positive or a negativefor GB Ltd. I’m not too sure whether Mr Messina was expecting the full on antiHS2 demonstration that took place, complete with banners, but it is safe tosay both sides of the argument putforward extremely valid points; thedebate continues.

Form 7 French Residential 2017Form 7 spent an exhilarating andexhausting week speaking (practically)nothing but French from waking up in themorning until going to bed at night.Visiting Le Château de la Baudonnière inNormandy, the children enjoyed a host ofexciting activities at the Château, includingfencing, climbing, archery, bread makingand, of course the legendary assaultcourse! They even had time to visit themarket at Vire and the Bayeux Tapestry.

Thank you Dr Roberts, #St. Ed’s could not have said it better!

On Thursday 9th February the Music Department took fifteenchoristers from the St Ed’s Chapel and Chamber Choirs toCornerway Lodge Retirement Home in Grayshott where theyperformed an afternoon concert for the residents. As well assinging popular pieces from the choirs’ extensive repertoire, there were also solo instrumental performances from Tom Burke(clarinet), Sasha Parker (violin) and Jonny Murray (piano). Theresidents enjoyed a varied selection of choral items includingPanis Angelicus (Franck), Ave Verum Corpus (Mozart), The Rose(McBroom) and the ever popular Ave Maria (Lindley).

This was a highly enjoyable afternoon and the choristersacquitted themselves superbly, providing a concert of extremelyhigh quality as well as acting as excellent ambassadors for theschool. Cornerway Lodge was hugely appreciative of the pupilsfor entertaining the residents and rewarded the choristers withan obscene amount of chocolate – Easter came early this year!

On the Friday before half term the whole schoolgathered for the annual cross country competitionand for the first time ever, the event took place inthe snow! The blizzards and arctic winds did nothamper anybody’s performance with the top fieldits usual accumulation of divisional and housecolours. The support by loyal parents and classfriends was outstanding, helped enormously by thecatering team’s infamous hot chocolate andcookies! Many congratulations to everyone whoran and well done to the following winners:

The Surrey School’s Cross Country Championships took place a fewweekends ago and I am very pleased to report that St Ed’s childrenperformed outstandingly. The top 8 pupils of schools in Surrey wereinvited to run which resulted in approximately 120 pupils competing inthe races. Some of the most notable successes were 1st places for EvieDenton and Henry McDonald, a 2nd for Eva Payne, an 8th for Zoe Gowand top 20 finishes for Yasmin Gubby, Elsa Gunn, Josh Wright and FreddieEichorn. Top 8 in each race will be invited to run for Surrey in the Inter-Counties plus invited to join some specialist training. What made memost proud however, was the effort and determination shown by theentire St. Ed’s team, all hungry to achieve the very best that they couldand who exceeded all expectations – everyone proved to be fantasticrepresentatives of the school. Such was the impact of St. Ed’s that wewere singled out for praise on the day by the Head of Surrey School’sAthletics, who had also made the connection to Luke VO, mentioningthat he is an amazing athlete and a great ambassador for the school. I was so proud to be part of Team St. Ed’s, well done everyone.
