FROM THE PASTOR
BREAD OF LIFE, PART IV
LOVE AND DEATH Flesh and blood are more than symbols of life and death: They are the substance of each. A man subsists in his flesh and blood, and at his death he is reduced in this world to mere flesh and blood. Thus the conversation with Jesus in John 6 reaches a climax in this Sunday’s excerpt:
Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him.
“Eat my flesh, drink my blood,” four times over. Jesus insists his followers share in his life, death, and—though it had not yet been revealed—his resurrection. Indeed, to be a follower of Jesus is to follow him in his life given over to God’s government, in his obedient suffering and death, and in his resurrection to eternal life.
Our sharing with Jesus is not merely a poetic concept: We share in his substance, his being, his flesh and blood, soul and divinity. In the same way, our service to God cannot remain merely conceptual. We must give time, attention, effort, money, preferences. We must suffer, both in the body and in the soul. We must hope in a bodily resurrection, a personal share in God’s life.
“Communion” is the Latin word for “sharing.” Holy Communion is the climax of our Christian life. It’s worth living for, literally—living our week as preparation for Communion on Sunday, receiving a deeper share of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Even for those who because of life circumstances or un-confessed sin are not prepared to receive Communion, to be a witness—that is, to be at Mass, and say the “Amen”—is a kind of sharing in the sacrifice.

Festival: Tim Castello and countless volunteers made possible last week’s festival. Thanks to all—helpers, donors, patrons—for a lovely neighborhood gala and fundraising effort.
Pope Francis: His Holiness, Pope Francis will attend the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia next month, September 22-27. SEAS Parish will be represented by Russell and Claire Giancola and their children. While in the U.S., Francis will make other visits, including an address to Congress on September 24. Congressman Tim Murphy invited Luke Briola to be on the Capitol grounds for the occasion. Keep watch for updates on these events.
The Ladies’ Ancient Order of Hibernians celebrates the annual Mass of their patroness, Our Lady of Knock, on Saturday, August 22, at the 4:00 p.m. Mass.
Church Alive! Campaign: Your gifts to the diocesan capital campaign, Our Campaign for The Church Alive!, do good around the Diocese. Forty percent are returned to SEAS, of which $40,000 subsidized the construction of our new maintenance facility, and over $30,000 reduced our building debt on the new SEAS Church.
Parish Capital Campaign: The long-running parish capital campaign, started by Fr. Luisi in 2006, and extended by me in 2010 through 2015, soon ends. We’ve received over $1,280,000—but that means we’re still allowed to accept another $220,000, without tax or assessment from the Diocese, through December 31. Your gifts to the parish capital campaign are still welcome!

Many Thanks!
There are so many people who worked very hard for the success of
Summerfest ‘15! From building and planning, to serving and cleaning —-
and all jobs in between! Many of you went beyond comfort to get the
jobs done. I know you were working for your parish and not for a pat on
the back, but please accept my genuine and sincere gratitude for all that you sacrificed: time, money, and perhaps even your health and
sanity! We are blessed to have such a wonderful parish, as was evident
throughout the festival —there were lots of smiling faces and happy
customers, and workers who made it look easy! Thank you!
—Tim Castello, Festival Chairman

We continue to look at some light-hearted responses to peoples' excuses for not attending Sunday Mass, provided by an internet blog. Hopefully this info can help you bridge a gap between you and someone who needs that gap to be bridged for them!
Excuse #2:
"I Have Small Children"
Oh, they’re the worst. Noisy little things... I have them, too. You know, the first thing they do when they exit the womb is scream? And it doesn’t stop there—if you bring them to Church they will choose the quietest time of Mass to scream like you’re murdering them—the homily, the Consecration—they know how to pick it. When my kids were little, I used to get ready for Mass and wonder what fresh hell I was in for this week. There were Sundays when my husband would take one of my screaming, writhing kids out of Church and I’d wonder if I would ever see either of them again (not enough to follow them, mind you, just enough to quietly ponder). So, why did we put ourselves through it? Because now they come with us cheerfully—not perfectly—but cheerfully enough. I still have to sit between them and give them the hairy eyeball once in a while, but dang if they aren’t listening. Church is what we do on Sunday. It’s the main event and the rest of our day and the rest of our week is better for it.

ATTENTION VISITORS TO SAINT MARY OF
MERCY, DOWNTOWN

Beginning Monday, August 10th, after the noon mass, contractors will begin to place scaffolding to accommodate the cleaning of the walls and ceilings. The project is expected to last approximately four weeks but should cause minimal disruption for our mass. The upper balcony area will be off limits during the cleaning. Thank you for your understanding.
