PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1

FROM FR. MIKE

PASTOR’S CORNER 1

I wish all of you a wonderful and blessed Christmas. There are many different ways of looking at what we are celebrating. It is the birthday celebra on of Jesus our Savior. It is a reminder to us that Jesus is coming again.

Through the years diverse cultures and tradi ons have a ached different meanings to this wonderful day. One of those tradi ons is that of Santa Claus, known also as St., Nicholas, Father Christmas, or St. Nick. St. Nicholas came from Myra. He was a sainted Fourth Century bishop in Asia Minor (Turkey). Santa's common portrayal in red robes with ermine trim and a floppy miter reflects his historic origins as a bishop of the church. Would you ever have guessed that the red pointed hat that hangs over Santa's ear was routed in the miter of a bishop?

Over the years, the myths a ributed to St. Nicholas took on some of the characteris cs of Wodin, the Germanic God. Hence, he acquired reindeers, elves and headquarters in the North Pole.

As patron of children, St. Nicholas is said to have brought them gi s on his feast. His feast is really celebrated on December 6; however, in many countries throughout the world this gi giving duty was transferred to Christmas day because Christmas day was the preferred me for gi giv-ing.

Santa is not only enjoyed by children, but especially by adults who delight in recalling the inno-cence of their own childhood. As adults we rejoice in discovering the real meaning of Christmas.

The right ques on to ask is not, "Is there really a Santa Claus?" but rather, "Does Santa Claus reveal a reality beyond himself?" Does he reveal to us a God who loves all of us as his li le chil-dren? If there is such a God, that is very good news! If this God really does love li le children so much so that he himself became a li le child at the very first Christmas, this is astonishingly good news!

The story of Santa is not simply a harmless tale that slipped from paganism into the Christmas mid-winter fes val -- it is at the heart of our Christmas celebra on.

As Santa Claus gives gi s to children, so God gives gi s to us. God cared so much that he gave us the very best gi - his own son.

This is our story. This is our faith. Where would we be without it?

Merry Christmas Fr. Mike

The Na vity of the Lord Great Expecta ons Christmas can be disappoin ng. We remember the Christmases from our childhood, all the joy, the ex-citement, and the fun we had. When we grow up, we have to shop for gi s, write and mail the cards, put up the decora ons, and do all the prepara ons that seem to stress us out. We may be sad that the day did not meet our expecta ons. Now that most of that is done, we can reflect on how the first Christ-mas upset all expecta ons. I'm sure Joseph never expected to have a child so soon. And those Jews who looked forward to the coming of a Messiah nev-er expected him to come as a baby. Yet God had his reasons for coming in this way. Jesus was born in a stable because no one had room for him. The first to see him were the shepherds, the migrant workers of the me. The poli cal leaders (Herod and friends) wanted to kill him. Jesus was born in this way to show that he came not for the important and wealthy, but for the poor and outcast. So today he con nues to come to us in the homeless, the illegal alien, the sick, those in prison, the unborn infant, that we might find him where we least expect. Can we learn to see him in the unexpected, in our trials and difficul es, our own weaknesses? When we do, we will celebrate what Christmas is truly about. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Prepare holiday babysi ers thoroughly The holidays come with lots of nights out for adults – office Christmas par es, last-minute trips to the mall for gi s, neighborhood gi exchanges, etc. – and you may need to call upon a babysi er to watch your kids for adults-only events. Think through the policies at your house that you will ask a si er to follow. These could include basic childcare rules (for example: limits on television viewing, bed me) as well as safety rules (for ex-ample: don’t let the kids play with knives or matches). For a copy of the VIRTUS® ar cle “Preven ng Abuse When Selec ng and Using a Babysi er,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.
