NEWSLETTER 19/2016 17 JUNE 2016

Dear Parents and Friends of St Clare’s

This week the school received confirmation that the Schools Planning Committee will visit St Clare’s on 29 June. This group has the responsibility for prioritising building grant applications - so we will be working very hard to ensure that St Clare’s presents a first class case to be awarded a building grant in the next round of allocations.

Last Wednesday I met with Michael McGready of the Catholic Schools Office to begin the process of designing a 10 year maintenance cycle plan. While this might not sound too exciting it is a process that will ensure that our facilities will continue to be upgraded and monitored to ensure they are functioning well. We will meet again next week to start the process.

Last week I met with representatives of the Student Representative Council to discuss outdoor seating and shade facilities. The group identified some styles of yard furniture that they would like to see at St Clare’s and it has been ordered. A number of other arrangements were discussed to help create seating in shaded/sheltered areas – our maintenance department will put these plans into place over the holidays. We will have some photos for our newsletter after the holidays.

Plans are well underway for our annual NAIDOC Week events. Michelle Case and our indigenous students are liaising with Community Elders and local organisations to ensure we have a great day and also raise awareness of the wonderful contribution that our first people make to our way of life.

As I write I am aware of a number of individuals and families experiencing great hardship, economically and emotionally, in our area. While we cannot right all the worlds wrong in one “go” I am pleased to say that we can assist people in small, but tangible ways each day. At present our Year 7 students are holding a soup can drive and the St Vinnies group is holding its annual blanket drive. We hope you are able to assist either of these ‘good works’ and bring a little care and happiness to those around us.

God Bless

Principal

P & F – NEXT MEETING, WEDNESDAY, 3 AUGUST 20166 PM ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, WINGHAM

PRAYERS: Please pray for those who are currently experiencing health difficulties and continue to pray for community members experiencing challenges, pain, sickness and grief in their lives at this time.

CHAPLAINCY/PASTORAL CARE: A reminder to all that the school has a Chaplain. Please feel free to contact our Chaplain, Deacon Vince Ryan, through the school office if he can be of assistance to you or any member of our whole school community.

VINNIES WINTER BLANKET APPEAL: As our weather becomes cooler our students are keen to support those from our wider communities in need of warm blankets. The appeal has commenced this week, so please consider supporting this wonderful and practical initiative.

You can send in blankets that you don’t need or support your child’s PC class financially so that they can pool their funds to buy new blankets. The other option is for you to purchase new blankets – it is a generous gift for those who feel the cold.

The appeal will run over the winter months so please feel free to send in blankets even as winter ends. I’m happy to receive blankets during the summer months!!

Thank youDeacon Vince

PRAYER POINT: 19 JUNE - 12TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME“’Who do the crowds say I am?’ And they answered, ‘John the Baptist; others Elijah; and others say one of the ancient prophets come back to life.’ ‘But you’, he said, ‘who do you say I am?’” Luke 9: 18-24What a question! Who is this man, Jesus? Who is he in my life? And this is a question we ask in ‘ordinary time’!“It was Peter who spoke up. ‘The Christ of God,’ he said”

This will give me ‘food for thought’ this week.Denise Ryan, Ministry Coordinator

CAREERS CORNER

Again this week, Careers Corner is of a more generic nature: it applies to students in Years 10 - 12 and, in some cases, those in Year 9 as it refers to those seeking to enter the workforce, be that on a permanent, temporary or casual basis.

The Business Council of Australia has prepared a GUIDE TO WHAT EMPLOYERS WANT. In a booklet entitled BEING WORK READY, the guide states that “…many employers are looking for potential employees to have more than a qualification. Many want them to have particular attributes before they will consider them suitable for a job” . The three attributes given which indicate work readiness are:

1. Values – accountability, continuous improvement, honesty, knowledge, respect, tolerance, work ethic

2. Behaviours – adaptability, authenticism, business mindedness, collaboration, customer focused, flexibility, global awareness, self-awareness, resilience

3. Skills – business literacy, critical analysis, data analysis, digital technology familiarity, literacy, numeracy, problem solving, technical skills

The guide also includes who is responsible for ensuring work readiness: Individuals Families Businesses Schools

VET providers Tertiary education providers Governments

DIOSOUNDS 2016: Our annual adventure to DioSounds took place on Wednesday, 1 June and Thursday, 2 June. Our Year 12, Year 11, Year 10 and members of the Year 9 Elective Music Class, along with Mr McDougall, Mr Koenig and Mrs Brown, hopped aboard the mini coach, destination DioSounds! This year marked 10 years of the event in the Maitland Newcastle Diocese and as a consequence, we took on the theme of the ‘Decades’. Each school had a decade from which to perform their musical item. St Clare’s represented the 1950’s. Our Year 10, 11 and 12 students presented four items in our bracket; Looking for an Echo, Shout, Blue Spring Shuffle and Bossa Antiqua. The students were fabulous and our performance truly demonstrated musical diversity.

Congratulations to all the students who took part in DioSounds. Their commitment to preparation, sense of fun and support of each other was outstanding. It was a privilege to accompany such a wonderful group of students and staff on a very busy and exhausting excursion. Thank you also to our parents who picked up their son/daughter in the small hours of Friday morning.

LEAVE NOTES & STUDENT MESSAGES: It would be appreciated if parents/guardians would send in a written note if their child needs to leave early for appointments etc. Notes should be handed in at the front office in the morning before roll call. If parents/guardians need to notify their child of a change of afternoon arrangements, it is necessary to phone the school prior to 2:25 pm (End of Lunch – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday) or prior to 1:55 pm (End of Lunch – Thursday Sport) as it is often difficult to locate students if their last lesson is a PE Prac or there has been a room change. Students cannot be collected from the school during school hours by anyone other than a parent or guardian without written permission. Thank you.

LATE NOTES: Lateness to school is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to the school the same way as other forms of absence. Arriving Late for school requires a handwritten note from a parent/carer or a phone call from a parent/carer or the absence is recorded as an unexplained partial absence. Thank you.

SCHOOL CLINIC: Students are reminded that if they are unwell whilst at school they are to advise their teacher who will then send them to the Front Office. If necessary, the office staff will contact a parent while the student waits in the Clinic. Students are not to contact parents on their mobile phones as this leaves teachers and office staff unaware of the situation and is also in breach of the school policy – use of mobile phones. Thank you.
