Joke of the week Love-as seen through the eyes of children

Nikka-age 6: If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate. Tommy-age 6: Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well. Mary Ann -age 4: Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day. Karen-age 7: When you love somebody, your eyelashes do up and down and little stars come of you. Karl-age 5: Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other. Jessica-age 8: You really shouldn’t say “I love you’ unless you mean it:. but if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget. Bobby-age 7: Love is what is in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen. Jenny-age 8: There are two kinds of love. Our love. God’s love. But God makes both kinds of them.

Pope’s 2017 Lenten message focuses on rich man, Lazarus

Pope Francis reflected on Christ’s parable of the rich man and Lazarus in his message for Lent 2017, which begins March 1.

“Let us find inspiration in this meaningful story, for it provides a key to understanding what we need to do in order to attain true happiness and eternal life,” the Pope said. The message, dated October 18 and released February 7, is entitled “The Word is a gift. Other persons are a gift.

”The brief message has three sections:

• The other person is a gift

• Sin blinds us

• The Word is a gift

“Let us pray for one another so that, by sharing in the

victory of Christ, we may open our doors to the weak and

poor,” the Pope concluded. “Then we will be able to ex-

perience and share to the full the joy of Easter.”

See part 2 of this message later in this bulletin…

India- Encounter the Singh Family When the Malaguni River in East India floods, Me-gha and Raj Singh, their two children and their ex-tended family cannot get to the nearest market—nearly five miles away—to buy and sell food. If the waters do not recede quickly, their rice fields fail, and their animals become sick from diseases spread through dirty water. The family faces financial dan-ger. That’s why CRS is helping the Singh family prepare for flooding with new farming tools and techniques. Now Raj plants his fields worry-free using a special type of rice that can survive flooding. He can collect and save his seeds for future use. And he now has the resources he needs to vaccinate his cows, en-suring they, too, survive the floods. Megha grows vegetables in a kitchen garden, so her family has healthy meals even when she can’t visit the market. During past floods, the family had to survive solely on rice. But now, planting veggies in special sacks, she is able to raise the plants above flood lines, ensuring her family has reliable access to nutritious food. Just as important, Megha has learned new ways of growing food, so that the entire family gets the most nutrition out of every meal. Now, the whole Singh family is healthier, and with these new ways of farming, they can continue to thrive, even during floods.

BUILDING A CULTURE OF ENCOUNTER

“Jesus’ whole life, his way of dealing with the poor, his actions, his integrity, his simple daily acts of gen-erosity, and finally his complete self-giving, is pre-cious and reveals the mystery of his divine life. When-ever we encounter this anew, we become convinced that it is exactly what others need, even though they may not recognize it: “What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you” (Acts 17:23). Some-times we lose our enthusiasm for mission because we forget that the Gospel responds to our deepest needs, since we were created for what the Gospel offers us: friendship with Jesus and love of our brothers and sisters. If we succeed in expressing adequately and with beauty the essential content of the Gospel, sure-ly this message will speak to the deepest yearnings of people’s hearts…”– Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gos-pel

Reflection: How do I cultivate my personal

prayer life?

How does my prayer lead me closer to Je-

sus?

How might my relationship with Jesus in-

spire me to share God’s Love with my neigh-

bors?

PROCESS: Personal Journal

Spend some time journaling—now, and throughout Lent. Where is God at work in your life today? What are those special places in your life in which you encounter Christ? How will this Lenten journey be one in which you encounter yourself, your neighbors and your God anew? CLOSING PRAYER: God of all people, open our eyes that we may see you at work in our lives and in every person we encounter.

Rice Bowl Stories of Hope and Reflection

Catholic Social Doctrine

Option for the Poor Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Option for the Poor, Jesus tells us to give special care to those who are most in need. He reminds us of our Christian duty to give a voice to those who are unheard and to help those who are most vulnerable.

Prayer for Healing and Reconciliation in Midst of Prejudice and Racism

Your children of all colors have been hurt by racism. Help us heal together. Help us do the inner work to be open to Your grace and to the “balm in Gilead” so our hearts are converted, and we can join hands to do our Lord’s con-structive work of love and justice. Amen.

CRS' HISTORY IN INDIA Catholic Relief Services began working in India in 1946 to help the local Church in Bombay to provide food to people affected by the war. During the next several years, child feeding programs and assistance to families in Calcutta continued in collaboration with Mother Teresa. By 1957, CRS was supporting 72 dioceses and 900 schools and health clinics with feeding programs.

Throughout the next several decades, CRS continued to provide U.S. government food support to its local partners to implement education, health, agriculture and emergency programs. U.S. Government food programming in India ended in 2009, but CRS has continued to work with part-ners in India to address issues of poverty, social justice, resource access, and poor living conditions among margin-alized groups. CRS programming in India focuses on emergency resilience, relief and recovery, strengthening agricultural livelihoods, improving health systems and ser-vices, and preventing human trafficking and sexual and gender based violence.

India Population: 1,236,344,631 Size: 1,269,219 square miles: 1/3 the size of the United States Nearly 42 percent of India’s population , almost 500

million people live on less than $1.25 per day while about 48 percent of children under age 5 suffer from stunting– the failure to grow and develop properly as a result of malnutrition.

Human trafficking remains a major concern through-out the country, while natural and man-made disas-ters continue to affect India every year.

CRS Programming in India focuses on relief and re-covery: strengthening agriculture livelihoods: improv-ing health systems and services: and preventing hu-man trafficking and supporting trafficking survivors.

Lent is a call to “give alms for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need of meals, they ring the rectory bell. They are in effect, ringing your doorbell.

In the month of February, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul provided 236 meals and paid $3291.00 in utility and rent bills. Thanks to you for your generous support. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together, we can help the suffering and poor.

We are to grow in holiness by prayer, reconciliation and sharing during Lent: a) by finding time to be with God every day of Lent, speaking to Him in fervent prayer and listening to Him through the meditative reading of the Bible; "Dear God, Your will, nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. Amen." b) by repenting of our sins daily and asking God’s forgiveness every night at bedtime; c) by being reconciled with God through the sacrament of rec-onciliation; d) by being reconciled with others, forgiving them the hurts they have caused us and asking their par-don for the hurts we have inflicted on them; e) by sharing our love with others through selfless and humble service, almsgiving and helping those in need; f) by living the Gos-pel or the Good News of God’s love, mercy and for-giveness in our lives, thus bearing true Christian witness.

Lent is the time for the desert experience. We can set aside a place and time to be alone daily with God, a time to distance ourselves from the many noises that bombard our lives every day, a time to hear God’s word, a time to rediscover who we are before God and a time to say yes to God and no to Satan as Jesus did.

An Arab fable tells of a miller who was startled by seeing a camel’s nose thrust in at the door of the tent where he was sleeping. “It’s very cold outside,” said the camel, “I only want to get my nose in.” The nose was allowed in, then the neck, finally the whole body. Soon the miller began to be inconvenienced by such an ungainly compan-ion in a room not large enough for both. “If you are in-convenienced,” said the camel, “you may leave; as for myself I shall stay where I am.” “Give but an inch,” says Lancelot Andrews, “and the devil will take an ell; if he can get in an arm, he will make shift to shove in his whole body.”

Give During Lent

Every day we witness situations of injustice, violence, and hatred. Television and the Internet bring these into our living rooms, but we also observe and live them in our own cities and homes. The Church calls us during Lent to be especially conscious of the needs of others and to act accordingly. Giving materially to another is an act of Christian charity known as “almsgiving.” During Lent, the Church also calls us to first convert ourselves and then to transform the world for justice, so that we might serve the Kingdom which Jesus lived and preached.

Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for Lent 2017 *Part 2*

“The Word is a gift. Other persons are a gift”.

3. The Word is a gift The Gospel of the rich man and Lazarus helps us to make a good preparation for the approach of Easter. The liturgy of Ash Wednesday invites us to an experience quite similar to that of the rich man. When the priest imposes the ash-es on our heads, he repeats the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”. As it turned out, the rich man and the poor man both died, and the greater part of the parable takes place in the afterlife. The two char-acters suddenly discover that “we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it” (1 Tim 6:7).

We too see what happens in the afterlife. There the rich man speaks at length with Abraham, whom he calls “father” (Lk 16:24.27), as a sign that he belongs to God’s people. This detail makes his life appear all the more con-tradictory, for until this moment there had been no mention of his relation to God. In fact, there was no place for God in his life. His only god was himself. The rich man recognizes Lazarus only amid the torments of the afterlife. He wants the poor man to alleviate his suffering with a drop of water.

What he asks of Lazarus is similar to what he could have done but never did. Abraham tells him: “During your life you had your fill of good things, just as Lazarus had his fill of bad. Now he is being comforted here while you are in ago-ny” (v. 25). In the afterlife, a kind of fairness is restored and life’s evils are balanced by good. The parable goes on to offer a message for all Christians. The rich man asks Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers, who are still alive. But Abraham answers: “They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them” (v. 29). Countering the rich man’s objections, he adds: “If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead” (v. 31).

The rich man’s real problem thus comes to the fore. At the root of all his ills was the failure to heed God’s word. As a result, he no longer loved God and grew to despise his neighbor. The word of God is alive and powerful, capable of converting hearts and leading them back to God. When we close our heart to the gift of God’s word, we end up clos-ing our heart to the gift of our brothers and sisters.

Dear friends, Lent is the favorable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbor. The Lord, who overcame the deceptions of the Tempter during the forty days in the desert, shows us the path we must take. May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscov-er the gift of God’s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need. I encourage all the faithful to express this spiritual renewal also by sharing in the Lenten Campaigns promoted by many Church organizations in different parts of the world, and thus to favor the culture of encounter in our one hu-man family. Let us pray for one another so that, by sharing in the victory of Christ, we may open our doors to the weak and poor. Then we will be able to experience and share to the full the joy of Easter.
