August 28, 2016 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed in-deed will you be because of their inability to repay you." Luke 14:13 -14

We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in re-turn – a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards we need to remem-ber that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven. There are some Christians who even TITHE their incomes. GIVING GOD ONE TENTH OF THEIR INCOME. THESE TITHING CHRISTIANS ARE ALWAYS IN AWE OF GOD AND QUITE SURPRISED OVER HOW WELL THEIR MONEY IS SPENT. --At the Amount of Money He has for the Lord’s Work. --At the Deepening of His Spiritual Life. --At the Ease of Meeting His Own Obligations with the Nine-Tenths Left --At the Ease of Going from One-Tenth to Even Larger Percentage. --At the Surprise as to What a Wise Steward he Be-comes in Decision-Making of the Remaining Nine-Tenths. --At Himself or Herself for Not Adopting the Plane Soon. The Reason for the Awesomeness of the Above: --YOU CANNOT OUT GIVE GOD! (adapted from Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations)

(adaptado de Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations)

Jubilee Year of Mercy August 28, 2016 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time “Alms atone for sins” (Sirach 2:29). Alms are mercy translated into hands-on compassion. Jesus confirms Sirach’s wisdom, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). “Conduct your affairs with humility” (Sirach 3:17). Humility: we’re all alike and special, for we’re children of God. Jesus confirms that wisdom, too: “Do not recline at table in the place of honor. Take the lowest place” (Luke 14:8, 10). In fact, “When you hold a lunch or a din-ner, do not invite friends, relatives, wealthy neigh-bors. Invite the poor, crippled, lame, blind,” physical-ly or figuratively, society's most vulnerable and mar-ginalized, “who cannot repay you” (see 14:12–14). Jesus seems to be telling us to prepare for eternity with God’s chosen by becoming their friend here and now. Mercy is measured not by our delight in wel-coming those we like most or who can repay us best, but by sincerely embracing those we like least, who cannot repay us at all. Utter humility inspires pure mercy; pure mercy leads to eternal joy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

“Pardoning offences becomes the clearest expression of merciful love, and for us Christians it is an imperative form which we cannot excuse ourselves”. --Pope Francis from Pope Francis Words of Wisdom - the Word made flesh

When a famine struck Rome in the 590s, Pope Gregory ordered the Church to use its assets to feed the poor. At that time, the Church controlled nearly two thousand square miles of land, overseen by the clergy and used to generate income. Now, in-stead of selling the produce of

the land, Pope Gregory ordered it shipped to Rome and given away for free. In this way, he saved thou-sands of people from certain death. Pope Gregory himself refused to eat until his monks returned from their work of handing out food. He also made certain to dine with a dozen poor peo-ple at each meal. Gregory is widely considered the be the first medieval pope, and he was a prolific writer. Because of his great respect for the poor, it was Pope Gregory and the Church that became the most respected --and obeyed force in Rome and across Italy. From the time of Gregory onwards, the people looked to the Church for government rather than the distant and indifferent emperors in Constan-tinople. Pope Gregory suffered from arthritis in his last years. He died on March 12, 604 AD. He was immediately proclaimed a saint by means of popular acclaim. Saint Gregory's relics remain in St. Peter's Basilica to this day. In 1969, the Second Vatican Council moved Saint Gregory's feast day from March 12 to September 3 so it would not fall during Lent. During Lent, there are no obligatory memori-als. The Eastern Orthodox Church also venerates Saint Gregory, honoring him on March 12. Both Anglican and Lutheran Christians also venerate Pope Saint Gregory. He is the patron saint of musi-cians, singers, students, and teachers.
