For bringing our present work to completion in a
new Parish Hall, we give you thanks, O Lord.
For those whom you inspired with this vision &
those who helped bring it about, we give you thanks,
O Lord.
For those who contributed their knowledge & gifts
and those who contributed their sweat & labor, we
give you thanks, O lord.
For those who prayed for this great gift, but who
have been taken into your heavenly care before see-
ing it accomplished, we give you thanks, O Lord.
Grant that those who enter this place may know the
blessing of Your Son, Jesus Christ, hear our prayer.
Grant that those who use this building may deepen
their participation in parish life, hear our prayer.
Grant that strangers & sojourners may feel a sense of
welcome here in the Lord, hear our prayer.
May faith abide here. May love abound in this place.
And may Your presence be known in this place.
Use this building for Your holy purpose, O God; use
us as living stones to do your will.

It is urgent, at the moment, that Catholics should
sanctify the family and the life of the family, for the
influence of Christianity upon society depends upon
its influence upon the family. Insofar as the family
ceases to be Christian, Christian civilization will ap-proach its end. “—-Introduction to the Devout Life,

St. Bernard Pastoral Council Minutes
July 21, 2015
Father Mike opened the meeting
with prayer.
Religious Education Board
Dusti Gallagher and Joe LaScala
presented information and led
discussion about the current and
future direction of the religious
education program for St. Ber-
nard. The current Religious Edu-
cation Board has been renamed
to “Faith Formation Council” to
encompass programs for all ages.
The function of this committee is
to provide an overall vision and
serve in an advisory role to Joe
and Father Mike for faith for-
mation programming. The Coun-
cil consists of members with spe-
cific interests in youth, young
adult and/or adult programs. FCC
members will serve a three year
term which are to be appointed
by Father Mike and Joe. All in-
put for Faith Formation programs
should be directed to Joe.
Finance Council
Doug VonFeldt led discus-
sions of the 2014-2015 year-
ending budget. Overall actual
vs. budgeted was very close
to target. In addition, the new
2015-2016 was presented.
**Budget information will be
published in the next St. Ber-
nard Newsletter. Questions or
feedbacks may be directed to
Doug. **see page 7
Stewardship Committee
Approximately 300 attended
the dedication of the new
parish center on Sunday, July
19. The event was a success
with many positive com-
ments about the new facility.
It is a true blessing that our
parish church and parish cen-
ter are in one location, we
now have the ability to host
both large and small events.
The committee will now
begin planning the St. Ber-
nard Fundraiser, scheduled
for February 27, 2016. This
will be held in the new parish
hall. The theme will be as a
luau, so get your grass skirts
and Hawaiian clothes ready!
Knights of Columbus
The annual Tootsie Roll
Drive will be held the week-
end of October 9-11. Money
raised is donated to the
Wamego Special Education
COOP and the Kansas Spe-
cial Olympics.
More information will be forth-
coming, please volunteer and
support this effort.
Building Committee
The overall project budget
for the new facility was ap-
proximately 2.7 million. The
final project cost was almost
identical which is very en-
couraging. Finances were
monitored very closely
throughout the process. There
are some ongoing minor
areas of work but the facility is
ready for use in all areas.
If parishioners have feedback
on the new facility, please
contact one of Building Com-
mittee members (listed on
the St. Bernard website) or
Father Mike.
Old Business
The final proposed facility
use contract was approved.
Separate rental rates were
established for active mem-
bers, members and non-
members of St. Bernard.
Copies of the rental agree-
ments are available through
Carol in the parish office.
Copies will be posted to the
website in the near future.
This initial contract will po-
tentially be changed over
time to reflect the needs and
desires of the parish.
New Business
The local Catholic radio
broadcast (105.3FM) is now
active. Please tune in and
spread the word. It is also
live streamed over the inter-
net for listening.
It was decided that initially
the church facility would not
offer “unsecured” wireless
internet access. If groups or
individuals need wireless in-
ternet access for events, they
must obtain information
through the parish office.
If families would like to take
up the gifts for a certain Mass
please contact one of the ush-
ers listed in the bulletin, or as
you arrive at church let one
of the ushers know that you
would like to do this. Cur-
rently, ushers ask individuals
or families before Mass be-
gins; this will continue to be
the major means of selection
for this service.
Respectfully submitted,
Joel DeRouchey

sert. Please drop them off before Mass.
FROM JOE:
As I have been here for a month now, I have grown
even more excited as I received a warm welcome
and learned of the passion for growing in faith from
members of this parish. Look for more information
to come about future ways of growing in your faith
including prayer groups, book studies, women’s Bi-
ble study, speaker series, and much more!
However, in order to make all of this happen,
there are going to be a few changes. The first transi-
tion is that of the Religious Education Committee to
a Faith Formation Council . The Faith Formation
Council will be the visioning body of total parish
catechesis. Members of the council will include
people involved in several different catechetical
programs. Additionally, specific ministry focused
groups will be created to be the working bodies for
the programs. Currently, we have a great group of
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd catechists who
will be continue to do what they are now doing; we
will also be creating the following teams:
Youth Ministry Core Team: focuses on creating
a Comprehensive Youth Ministry approach includ-
ing weekly meeting, monthly activities, lock-ins,
retreats, service activities, social activities, mission
trips, youth conferences, fund raisers, etc.
Confirmation Team: helps with the formation of
candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation in-
cluding the required meetings, creating opportuni-
ties for service, retreats, etc.
RCIA Team: leads weekly formation meeting,
retreats, etc.
.

Continued….. Religious Education Information
Family Ministry Team: creates oppor tunities to
grow as a family, provides resources for parents, dis-
cerns new ways to minister to families
Adult Ministry Team: will include those who will
provide opportunities for adult faith formation in-
cluding men’s and women’s groups, book groups,
etc.
If you would like to help with any of the above
teams, of if you know of anyone who would be good
on one of the teams, please contact
Joe LaScala. Ministry Teams are asked to commit to
a certain term length.
In addition to the ministry teams, we need volun-
teers for other specific tasks. Some of these are:
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Aid/Substitute—-is “on call” to fill in where need-
ed as an extra adult.
Youth Ministry Driver/Chaperone—specific
for each event.
Kitchen Helper—help prepare meals/snacks.
Administrative Duties—help with mailings,
filing, etc.
Topic Presenter—for those who have vast
knowledge on particular topics and want to share it.
If you would like to help in any of the ways listed or
you if you have other ideas of how you can be of
service, please feel free to contact me.
Have a great August!

They Are Here….The Dog Days of Summer
Supposedly
DOG Days occur during
the period
when Sirius, the DOG Star rises
at the same time as the sun. A
period marked by lethargy, inac-
tivity, or indolence. —
Dictionary.reference.com
This heavenly body is responsi-
ble for the origin of the expres-
sion dog days, a phrase that has
endured through millennia.
The Dog Star’s connection to
dogs was not only maintained by
constellations and mythology, it
was boosted by the fact that dogs
seemed to take the brunt of dog
days. They suffered from the
heat more intensely than humans
seemed to, and were at greater
risk of madness.
Humans have been griping
about weather as far back as
written history reaches, and the
dog days were an important time
for all. Ancient Greeks and Ro-
mans had grim feelings for Siri-
us, associating it with an out-
break of insufferable heat and
fever. —Dictionary.com
The phrase dog days refers to
the sultry days of summer in the
Northern Hemisphere. Dog days
of summer are most commonly
experienced in the months of
July and August, which typically
observe the hottest temperatures.
In the Southern Hemisphere, they
typically occur in February and
March, in the midst of the austral
summer. wikipedia
