2 — Third Sunday of Easter · April 15, 2018

From the Desk of the Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould

Holy Communion: Prac cing the Covenant This weekend and next we will have many second graders making their first Holy Communion. So it’s a good me to recall the importance of the

Eucharist for us who would be disciples of the Lord. Of course, we also want to pray for our First Communicants, that they will become increasingly close to Jesus, whom they are consuming in communion. This will be their “first” communion, and, hopefully, not their last! Note the difference with the other sacraments that we receive. We don’t say that we had first bap sm or first confirma on, because those sacraments imprint a character on our souls that can never be taken away. We do those sacraments only once. Even marriage, although we can have more than one if a spouse dies, is not usually numbered. But we number the First Communion, because communion is meant to happen many mes un l we die. The Lord means to strengthen us. We are saved by the grace that comes from Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Without that grace, we are lost. We all have tried, at different points in me, to do life on our own terms and under own power. It won’t work. Without the Lord Jesus and His strength and power, sin will get the be er of us. We are meant to have many communions with the Lord because it is the ordinary way that we are strengthened by Him to persevere as disciples. Having to repeat Holy Communion fits with the way God has built us. We are not angels, who are pure intelligences. C. S. Lewis has one of his characters say at one point that angels are more like living minerals than they are like us. They have no physical bodies. They do not need to repeat themselves or learn. They either do the will of God (and are angels) or they do not do the Lord’s will (and are, therefore, demons). We, though, are built to learn, and we learn through repe on. Whatever we do many

mes is easier to do the next me. We develop habits, and the habits increase our power to do that kind of thing. A good habit is a virtue, such as courage, wisdom, charity, and the like. Feel afraid, and do the right thing anyway, and one is prac cing the virtue of courage. Do that o en enough, with God’s help, and courage will become so much a part of you, that it would be almost unthinkable to give in to fear. The same goes for our covenant, our “yes,” to the Lord. We have to prac ce it, not just say it once. Every me we show up to Mass, the Lord is invi ng us to say again that we believe in Him and that we take Him to be our Lord. He seals this rela onship with the sacrifice of His cross, made present to us in the Eucharist. By prac cing, over and over again, saying yes to the Lord and receiving Him, our rela onship with Jesus is meant to be so much a part of us that it would be almost unthinkable to do anything against His will. Our communion with the Lord, prac ced in Holy Communion, is meant to be so much a part of us, that the very defini on of who we are will include Jesus Himself. Pray for our First Communicants, and pray for all of us, that we may frui ully receive the Lord in Holy Communion!

Visit the Church Library For a different approach to business thinking, read “Jesus CEO” (in the Jesus sec on). A er many years in business, the author was struck by the no on that Jesus’ leadership approach with his staff ran counter to most of the management styles and techniques employed today. The author shows us how harnessing three categories of strength behind Jesus’ leadership techniques, each of us can become the empowered leaders that the next millennium will require.

The library is located in Coleman Hall. To sign out a book, just put your name, date (month/day/year) and phone number on the card (located on the book’s inside cover) and put the card in the “Signed Out Books” holder. When returning the book, put it on the shelf marked “Returns” and we’ll replace it in the library.

BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament—the Chris an scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today’s selec ons refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in “Jesus Christ the righteous one” (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to “repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). The First Le er of John calls Jesus Christ “expia on for our sins” (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with “Peace” and urges them to preach “repentance, for the forgiveness of sins” (Luke 24:47). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
