Summer Soulwork

On July 2 and 9, we continue our series The Faith We Sing. There’s good theology in those hymns—and by singing parishioners’ favorites, we reflect

on the Good News present in our music.

On July 16, Meg Clark, executive director of Home & Hope, will orient St. Bede’s to hosting this ministry to families experiencing homelessness. We’ll hear about the realities of homelessness in San Mateo County and learn about volunteering with the program. New and experienced Home & Hope volunteers are encouraged to attend this session.

We begin a new series, Embracing Forgiveness, on July 23. Jesus’ command to forgive others as we have been forgiven is one of his more challenging teachings. Using a video series featuring noted author the Rev. Barbara Crafton, we’ll explore the meaning and practice of forgiveness. This series runs for five Sundays, July 23 and 30 and August 6, 13, and 20.

Soulwork meets on Sundays at 9:00am in Lehman Hall; childcare is available by advance request.

Bede’s Journal mailing list

If you receive a copy of Bede’s Journal by U.S.

mail, won’t you please take a moment to mark and return the postcard bound into your

issue, to let us know whether or not you’d like to continue to receive the print copy? We would be delighted to continue mailing it to you. But if the mailed copy does not suit your lifestyle, we will remove you from the mailing list.Current and archived issues of the Journal will continue to be available on St. Bede’s website, and a PDF is also emailed to pa-rishioners and friends. (Please let us know if you are not receiving an emailed version but would like to.) And paper copies of the current issue will still be available at St. Bede’s in both narthexes and in the courtyard literature box.

As you remember, our Vestry led a Soulwork series during Lent this year exploring how our community is called to live out our baptismal covenant. We explored a number of ministries we are already doing and some possibilities for new outreach ministry. While we mentioned Home & Hope during Soulwork, I confess that hosting the program was not on our radar screen at that time—but it turned out to be the opportunity the Holy Spirit has sent us. Our hospitality to these families

expresses our baptismal commitments “to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves” and “to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being” (BCP, p. 305).

One of the factors that guided us to say yes is the manageable size of this commitment. Home & Hope has had two or three families in the program for the last few months, for a total of ten to twelve children and adults. We believed this number of guests was reasonable for us to host. Volunteer

From the RectorHosting Home & Hope

Sometimes we discern where the Holy Spirit is leading us, and we go in search

of her. Sometimes unexpected opportunities come to us, and we realize they have been brought by the Holy Spirit. This summer brings us one of these latter experiences.

From August 6 to 13, for the first time ever, St. Bede’s will host Home & Hope. You may have heard of this program, which provides shelter for families experiencing homelessness. It is hosted by churches and synagogues up and down the Peninsula. The host site sets up tents indoors, usually in the hall, where the families sleep on cots. Volunteers from the congregation serve dinner, play with children, stay overnight in case of emergencies, and help the families pack lunch before they go to Home & Hope’s day center for showers. St. Bede’s has sent volunteers to other host sites for a number of years, but we haven’t been able to host because of our commitment to Trinity School. Home & Hope contacted us looking for a host site for a week that our campus happened to be available. Emilee Wilhelm-Leen, Carol Brink, and Jeanne Cooper led a conversation with the Community Service committee about the possibility of our hosting Home & Hope, and the parish staff and vestry also discussed it. Together we discerned that the Holy Spirit was calling us to do this.

coordinators from other host sites, including Congregation Beth Jacob and Trinity Church, offered their expertise and support, so that we have wisdom on which to draw as we learn how to do this. The Seccombe Outreach Fund remains well funded thanks to your generosity at last fall’s gala, giving us the financial resources to cover hosting expenses. In addition, this is a one-time engagement. St. Bede’s has not committed to anything beyond one week this August. This allows us to try this on and see how it goes. Perhaps we will decide to host the program next summer too; maybe we’ll determine that sending volunteers to other sites is best for us.

There are a number of ways you can support our hosting Home & Hope, from praying for our guests to serving dinner to staying overnight. Please see the article on page 6 for details. I do not expect this to be easy. Following the call of the Holy Spirit, living the faith of our baptism is never easy. We will make at least one major mistake and probably dozens of smaller ones. What matters to God, however, is not how perfectly we execute this task, but the love with which we carry it out. I hope you will join me in volunteering with Home and Hope this August, in putting our love of God and love of neighbor into action.

Peace,Gia+

sided tents to allow for some privacy. We plan to set up these tents in the Sunday school classrooms so as not to disturb the 12-step meetings that happen in Lehman Hall throughout the week. The primary opportunities for St. Bede’s volunteers will be to prepare, serve, and clean up after dinner (5:30-7pm); play with children and socialize with adults after dinner (6:30-8pm); and/or spend the night on campus and share breakfast with families before they depart (8pm-7am). A St. Bede’s

coordinator will be on site nightly and St. Bede’s and other congregations’

volunteers will offer support. Please check your calendar and plan to volunteer if you are able. And don’t worry at all if you’ve not volunteered with Home & Hope before—as

always, an experienced volunteer or coordinator will serve alongside

each evening’s team and there’s no easier time to jump in than when Home & Hope happens on our home turf. If you have questions, please do contact any of:

Community ServiceHome & Hope at St. Bede’s

Exciting news! After many years of vol-unteering with Home & Hope at partner

congregations, St. Bede’s will take our first stab at hosting this summer during the week of August 6-13. We are so excited to wel-come Home & Hope families to our parish. This decision was not taken lightly, but in prayerful conversation with anchor Home & Hope volunteers, the Community Service committee, as well as the Rector and Vestry. It’s a big commitment but we believe St. Bede’s is up to the task. And we will plan to lean on our partner congregations as well for expertise, loaned equipment, and additional volunteer support. For those not familiar with Home & Hope, the program is a transitional family shelter that aids up to four or five thoroughly vetted, re-cently homeless families who spend days at work, nursery/school, and/or the day center, where they receive job placement assistance, financial planning, and other counseling to help them get back into permanent housing. In the evening, enrolled families eat, relax, and sleep in a host church or synagogue. The host congregation offers the dinner meal each day as well as overnight space, use of bathroom facilities, and continental breakfast. Families sleep on cots in canvas-

Stanford ChaplaincyAn Opportunity to Offer

Spiritual Care

The Episcopal Chaplaincy at Stanford Hospital, one of our nonprofit partners

in community service, is seeking applicants to become spiritual care volunteers at the hospital. Volunteers typically serve once a week, visiting Episcopal patients (typically one to four) for friendly conversation and, if requested, prayers.

Applicants who complete a background screening (including letters of reference and a phone interview), TB test, and online classes will be invited to join in a series of three training classes on Mondays, Septem-ber 11, 18, and 25 from 6:30 to 9pm at Our Lady of the Rosary, 1350 Cowper Avenue, Palo Alto.

The training reflects the many faiths and spiritual paths of patients at Stanford Hospital. Episcopal applicants who com-plete the training will then be mentored by Rev. Thomas C. Jackson, the Episcopal chaplain at Stanford Hospital (who was ordained to the priesthood while a member of St. Bede’s). Attending all three classes and several mentoring sessions are required to successfully complete the free training program.

Applications will be accepted up to 5pm on September 1, but it’s best to apply early to

be able to complete the online coursework and other requirements before the train-ing classes begin. To apply, please call Stanford Hospital’s Spiritual Care Office (650)723-5101 to receive an application link and reference link.

For more information, contact Rev. Tom at his office at St. Cyprian’s Church in San Francisco, (415) 567-1855. If you’d like to speak with one of our recently trained parish-ioners, talk with Jeanne Cooper, Bertita Graebner, or Irene Lawrence.

Summer is traditionally a time for travel, but not all of us have the means and opportunity to explore as much as we might like. I took an armchair tour to see
