SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER It’s hard to believe that this is the last newsletter of the 2013/2014 school year. There have been many joys and suc-cesses to celebrate this year, Art Murals hung in new wing, Celebration of Recon-ciliation and First Communion with our Grade 2 students and their families, sup-porting our Foster child, Aaron, our collec-tions for Holy Childhood, Christmas An-nual Turkey Luncheon and Catholic Edu-cation Week were all wonderful successes. We have made huge gains in the area of Literacy across the Primary Division. This is due to the students willingness to learn, family support and a dedicated staff. There have also been many individual successes and we congratulate all of our students on the gains they have made this year.

We are truly blessed with a wonderful student body, parent com-munity and staff. We look forward to many new memories next year! Have a safe and happy summer.

PARENTING TIP FOR JUNE

June is a good time to reflect with your children on the successes and challenges of the past school year. Remind your children that, through baptism, we are all called to use our God-given gifts. In Confirmation, these gifts will be strengthened so that we may share them with the whole Church. Help your children to see how important it is for them to use God’s gifts .

MARRIAGE TIP FOR THE SUMMER

Summer often brings a little reprieve from the bustle of our busy lives. It’s a great period to spend some extra time with your spouse reconnecting as a couple. Share a coffee in the early morning, read the same book and talk about its content, take daily walks together, spend some relaxed time preparing meals. Tranquil moments to-gether reduce our stress and remind us that being to-gether is both enjoyable and loving.

HOT WEATHER DAYS With the onset of warm and humid summer days please make sure that your child(ren) are pre-pared for the weather. Kindly apply sunscreen before your child(ren) leave for school in the morning and ensure that they have a hat with them, particularly for the noon hour re-cess. Families are also encouraged to send a water bottle with their child that can be filled periodically throughout the day.

On days when the air quality is poor and the humidity high we will have a shortened recess period.

REGISTRATION OF NEW STUDENTS

If you know of a new family moving to the area wish-ing to register at St. Basil’s School please have them contact the school as soon as possible. With Enrol-ment Caps placed on all elementary classrooms it is very important that we receive registrations as soon as possible in order to be able to accommodate them.

Please encourage families that have not yet registered their child for school in September to contact the school immediately. The School Board will determine staff requirements for September and last min-ute registrations can mean disruption for classes. Thank you for your cooperation.

TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2014

If you will be moving over the next couple of months or over the summer holidays, we need to know. Kindly advise the school before the end of June if your child/children will not be attending our school in September. We also need to know if your address will be changing. If you are aware what your new ad-dress will be in September please advise the office prior to June 29th. We would like to, if possible, ad-vise the transportation department at the board office of any changes that we know of. Being able to ad-vise them early will provide for a smoother transition in September.

Changes in babysitting locations should also be reported to the school as soon as possible. If your child currently attends a babysitter’s before and after school, please confirm that these same arrangements will continue in September. Please contact the school office and we will send home the appropriate form (Alternative Transporta-tion Form) for you to com-plete and return to the school prior to the end of this school year.

If these changes occur during the summer months, kindly advise the Transportation Department in writ-ing or by telephone at the following address for either the Bluewater District School Board or the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board:

ALTERNATE/DAYCARE TRANSPORTATION AR-RANGEMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2014/2015

Transportation to daycare is provided to families of stu-dents in elementary school. The safe delivery of these students to the correct address every day is important to the Board. To this end, daycare transportation is only ac-commodated on a fixed schedule for all 188 days of the school year. Students may choose a bus route for the morning, and the same or other bus route for the after-noon, but the route(s) must be fixed 188 school days of the year. Using one stop location Monday and Tuesday and another stop location the other days of the week is not al-lowed. If a child has a variable bus schedule due to day-care they will have to decide on one route for the 2014/2015 school year. However, it is possible to have an am stop that is different from a pm stop. To make this change families must fill out a Daycare Transportation form at their school before the end of this school year. I would invite any parents to contact the Transportation Consor-tium (www.brucegreyschoolbus.ca for contact information and policies and procedures) to discuss their child's trans-portation options.

Transportation arrangements can also be made for Custo-dial Provisions provided that the arrangements are a two week/consistent rotating schedule. Families must provide a detailed calendar showing the details of bussing.

Here are some precautions to take for your family when going outside:

The worst hours for going out in the sun are from 10 AM to 4 PM. It’s best to avoid going out in the sun during this time frame because the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) strength is at its peak. If for some reason you have to be out in the sun at these hours use the maximum amount of protection that you can. A sun block with an SPF rating of 50 is the ideal during these hours. Sun blocks are even stronger than sunscreen. Non-protected exposure during these hours would increase your family’s risk of cancer tremendously.

When do we put on the sunscreen? Rub it on half an hour before exposure to the sun. Some people only apply it after going outside. This is a mistake since it takes time for your skin to absorb the sunscreen.

A common mistake that we make is forgetting certain spots when putting on the sunscreen. So every part of the skin that is exposed should have sunscreen. Ears, feet, be-hind the legs are places that we tend to forget.

Keep reapplying it every 2 hours. Especially if you go into the water. Even if your sunscreen is water resistant you still need to reapply every 2 hours.

Clothing helps to block sun rays so if possible, wear a light-weight, long-sleeved shirt, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat to help protect your skin.

Remain in the shade as much as possi-ble. When your kids are playing in the sand, have them remain under a large umbrella for more protection.

SWIMMING AT HARRISON PARK— Friday, June 20th
