PASTORAL REFLECTIONS T.F. Brosnan

Millstones and cut-up body parts make for some serious punishments in today’s gospel for those who corrupt children, especially when we realize that, in biblical usage, feet and hands are often euphemisms for a man’s genitals. (According to Eusebius, Origen castrated himself based on this text). The Bible isn’t always an easy read. Many would quick have those millstones round the necks of priest abusers and the bishops who covered for them. The crisis, like the rising rivers in the Carolinas, has not yet crested, which makes you wonder where we, as a church, will ultimately end up. In Graham Greene’s, The Power and the Glory, a young teenage boy is taken up with the revolution underway in Mexico, indicated by the boy’s desire to imitate the morally upright and disciplined lieutenant in charge of hunting down priests. This in sharp contrast to the fugitive priest who has fathered an illegitimate child and stinks of whisky as he seeks shelter in the boy’s home. The lieutenant inspires in the boy admiration; the priest – disgust. Yet, by the end of the novel the very earth has shifted. The boy hears another knock at the door and the stranger, in fear for his life, is likewise seeking shelter. “’I am a priest,’ he whispers to the boy. ‘My name is Father…’ but the boy had already swung the door open and put his lips to the priest’s hand before he could give himself a name.” Grace – Greene’s real protagonist - has entered the story and turned everything upside down. Although the boy sees power in the morally upright lieutenant; he senses glory in the human weakness of the priest. Grace takes what we despise and makes it oddly attractive. Grace reveals, to the searching eye, the diamond hidden in the rough. Grace reminds us that every beautiful pearl is the result of a sickness in the oyster. “Be dumbfounded, unable to say yes or no,” the mystic writes. “Then a stretcher will come from grace.” May it come soon.

REFLEXIONES PASTORALES

Brosnan

Millstones ak pati koupe kò a fè pou kèk pinisyon serye nan levanjil jodi a pou moun k ap pouri timoun yo, sitou lè nou reyalize ke, nan itilizasyon biblik, pye ak men yo souvan efemism pou pati jenital la. Nan Graham Greene, Pouvwa a ak tout bèl pouvwa a, yon jèn ti gason jèn pran moute ak revolisyon an sou pye nan Meksik, ki endike pa dezi ti gason an imite lyetnan a moralman mache dwat devan Bondye ak disipline an chaj lachas desann prèt yo. Sa a nan kontras byen file nan prèt la sove ki te papa yon timoun ilejitim ak santi nan wiski kòm li ap chèche refij nan kay ti gason an.

Continued... Lyetnan a enspire nan admirasyon ti gason an; Prèt la - degou. Men, nan fen a nan roman an te tè a anpil deplase. Ti gason an tande yon lòt frape nan pòt la ak moun lòt nasyon an, nan laperèz pou lavi l ', se menm jan tou ap chèche refij. "'Mwen se yon prèt,' li whispers ti gason an. 'Non mwen se Papa ...' Men, ti gason an te deja pase sou pòt la louvri, li mete bouch li nan men prèt la anvan li te ka bay tèt li yon non. " Grace - reyèl protagonist Greene a - te antre nan istwa a epi li vire tout bagay tèt anba. Malgre ke ti gason an wè pouvwa nan lyetnan a moralman k'ap mache dwat; li santi l glwa nan feblès imen an nan prèt la. "Lè sa a, yon trench ap soti nan favè Bondye." Me li vini byento.
