Today’s Gospel reading deals with a subject that isn’t
usually our favorite thing to do. Correcting another person
isn’t tops on most of our lists. Or if we find that we do like
it, there’s every possibility that we’re not doing it with the
right motives. Unfortunately some people by nature like to
lord it over others; most people do not. But the first thing
that we should notice in today’s Gospel passage is that
correcting others can also be an obligation, both when we
have the authority to do so, and more broadly when Christian
charity requires that it be done. As our Act of Contrition tells
us, we sin not only by what we do, but we also sin by what
we fail to do for others and offering needed correction is the
best thing we can do for them. Today though, we hear all
kinds of excuses to get out of this Christian obligation. We
hear people say that we should “live and let live”, or, “there
but the grace of God, go I.” These things may sound nice,
but there is a danger that they can also encourage a spirit of
lack of concern for others. How many times have we heard
the story where someone was being harmed and a whole
crowd of people turned away not wanting to become
involved? Granted these are usually extreme cases, but it is
still basically a failure to correct the wrong being done by
another person. As the saying goes: all that’s needed for evil
to triumph, is for good people to do nothing.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 10, 2017
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Saint Mary Frances of the Five Wounds, Virgin (1715-1791)
Saint Mary Frances of the Five Wounds was born Anna Maria Gallo, the daughter of Francesco Gallo and Barbara Basinsin, in the Spanish Quarter of Naples, a red-light district of the city still known today for its high crime. According to tradition, another saint, the Jesuit, St. Francis de Geronimo, predicted her future sanctity while she was still an infant. Her family was of the middle class, but her father, a weaver of gold lace, was a very violent man who regularly abused his family physically, often severely. When Anna Maria was sixteen, her father attempted to force her into a marriage with a young man of means who was seeking her hand. She refused and asked to join the Franciscan Third Order, through which she could live out a religious life in the family home. She was received into the Order on 8 September 1731 and began wearing the religious habit which was an uncommon practice by that year. She also adopted the use of the religious name of Mary Frances of the Five Wounds out of devotion to the Blessed Virgin, St. Francis of Assisi and the Passion of Christ. It was also at this time that the future saint, St. John Joseph of the Cross became her spiritual director and under his guidance she made great advances in prayer. In 1753, she and another woman took up their own residence in the city of Naples and her work among the poor became well known. It is also at this time that she reportedly received the wounds of the stigmata. She would carefully conceal her wounds while doing her work with gloves so as not to attract attention. Numerous cures were also reported to have taken place under her care; cures she always attributed to the intervention of Saint Raphael the Archangel.
Saint Mary Frances of the Five Wounds, worn
out by her care of the sick and poor and intense prayer
life, died on October 7, 1791 in the city of Naples. She
was canonized by Pope Pius IX on June 29, 1867.

EMERGENCY COLLECTION FOR
HURRICANE HARVEY
This weekend St. Anthony of Padua is participating in a special collection to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey. The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and diocese across the country have been asked by the leadership of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to have this emergency collection. The money will be used both to support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted diocese through the USCCB. All checks should be made payable to St. Anthony of Padua with the memo line marked Emergency Collection for Hurricane Harvey. If you are not prepared to donate today, you may bring your donation to the rectory office this week. Thank you.

POTLUCK AND A MOVIE
All women are invited to join the Women’s Faith Ministry on Sunday, October 1 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at St. Anthony for a potluck dinner
followed by the movie “War Room”. The movie focuses on a family who seemingly have it all. But as they go through tough times, a new friend helps them find happiness through prayer as they develop their own “War Room” where prayer and discernment lead to resolution. If you can, please bring something of your choice for the potluck dinner. Beverages, popcorn and paper products will be provided by WFM. Seating is limited so please RSVP by September 25 and leave your name, phone number and email address (if you have one) with the parish office at (440) 842-2666 or by sending it in an email to [email protected].
WEEKLY MASS REMINDER
With the installation of Bishop Nelson Perez, his name will now be mentioned in the Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass. Remember to pray for him, both at Mass and in your daily prayer.
MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. Start your conversation with God with this question:
Did you hear the name of the new bishop mentioned in
the Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass? Describe the
experience of hearing his name for the first time. What
does it mean to you?
SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK
Let’s promote vocations by praying for our diocesan seminarians.
Please pray for Brian Petro.
SOCIAL CONCERNS
COMMISSION
The St. Anthony Social Concerns
volunteers will be serving lunch
at the West Side Catholic Center
on Tuesday, September 19, 2017.
Your homemade desserts are truly
appreciated by the people who eat at the center. Some
of the men and women from the center ask us to
package their desserts to take home, so we are asking
for brownies (preferably without icing), cookies, bar
cookies and even banana or pumpkin, etc. breads that
can be sliced. You can drop off your bakery at the
rectory on Monday, September 18, 2017. If you
would like to help us in our mission to serve the
needy and you really don’t like to bake, please
consider a cash donation to help defray the cost of our
meals. Any donations are welcome. Thank you.
HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU
KNOW…
Did you know that the Sacraments of
Penance and Anointing of the Sick
are called the Sacraments of
Healing? In Confession, our soul receives healing
from God when we ask for forgiveness and receive
His mercy. With the anointing, we ask God to bring
healing to the body and to strengthen our weary soul.
God is always looking out for us, and He is always
there when we need Him.
CONFIRMATION STUDENTS AND PARENTS

obligations. Please consider giving us a hand.
RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK
Order: Order of Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv.)
Province of Our Lady of Consolation
Founder: St. Francis of Assisi.
Origin: After Francis established the
order, a group of friars chose to minister in and around the larger towns. They lived together in
communities, rather than living in hermitages.
Work: The friars serve in many capacities.
Some are parish priests. Others are chaplains in hospitals, nursing homes, military bases, and prisons. Some friars are theologians and scientists
teaching in seminaries and universities.
Point of Interest: The friars use the suffix Conventual, which derives from the Latin convenire, “to come together.”

CATECHETICAL
SUNDAY Next Sunday, September 17, 2017, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday. The theme for this year is, “Living as Missionary Disciples.” On Catechetical Sunday, we recognize those who have chosen to serve as catechist and to thank them for their ministry. This is also a great opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.
LIGHT OF HEARTS FALL FEST Join Light of Hearts Villa for its annual Fall Fest,
Sunday, October 8, from 11:30-5pm. Tickets for
