Opening the Cathedral’s Holy Doors w/Bishop Conlon to Begin the Year of Mercy As our local way of joining with Pope Francis as he opens the Holy Doors in Rome, all the faithful are invited to join with Bishop Conlon prior to the beginning of 5:00 pm Mass on Saturday, Dec. 12, as he opens the Holy Door at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet. This liturgy will be our diocesan initiation of the Holy Year of Mercy. Let us enter into this Holy Year in joyful celebration of God’s extravagant love and mercy. May our own carrying out of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy make present God’s tender mercy.

Collection This Weekend Saturday, December 12 Sunday, December 13 In the United States today, there are more than 33,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. These religious worked tirelessly in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies, usually for little to no pay. As a result many religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift next week to the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and more.

Please be generous.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS:

WHAT ARE WE TO DO? John the Baptist instructs us that we are called simply to live fairly, in God’s justice. When we live that way, we know the Lord is near. A cause for rejoicing! FIRST READING Shout for joy! Sing joyfully! Be glad and exult! The LORD, your God, is in your midst (Zephaniah 3:14-18a). Zephaniah speaks of the restoration of Jerusalem after a period of terrible judgment takes place upon the earth. God would visit the city to protect it. He would bring a great period of rejoicing. This reading expresses well the theme of the Third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday, a Latin world that means “Rejoice.” We rejoice because the birth of Jesus is near, but also because we have been working to transform our hearts during this season of conversion. SECOND READING Rejoice! The Lord is near. Make your requests known to God (Philippians 4:4-7). Saint Paul wrote this letter after he had been imprisoned and faced the possibility of being put to death. This gave him a clearer perspective on life and faith. He wanted the Philippians to dedicate themselves to the only things that were really important. Thus, he speaks of prayer, petition, thanksgiving, and above all, joy. If God is the center of our lives, then we will find joy, no matter what might happen to us. GOSPEL John tells his hearers to share their possessions with the needy (Luke 3:10-18).

John the Baptist preaches to the people of Israel. Like the accounts found in the other Synoptic Gospels, Luke speaks of the coming of the Day of the Lord. This would be a day of judgment upon Israel and upon the world. John the Baptist invites his listeners to turn away from their sins. Unlike the accounts found in Matthew and Mark, St. Luke’s version speaks of how tax collectors and soldiers could convert their ways. He did not require them to abandon their occupations. Rather, he simply asked them to exercise their responsibilities as honestly as they could. God does not ask us to reject who we are, but rather simply asks us to be as virtuous as we possibly can be. Yet the time had come for people to make a decision. God was going to separate the good from the evil as one separates wheat from chaff. The Third Sunday of Advent is a time to make some serious decisions concerning how we live, work, play, etc. Like the tax collectors and soldiers, who spoke to the Baptist, we are called to conform our ways to the Good News. REFLECTION This week, Luke shows that the ministry of John the Baptist took place at a specific time. Next week Luke is also specific in the guidance John offers to each group who comes to him asking, “What are we to do?” The crowd is to share their resources. Tax collectors are to take nothing more than what is prescribed. Soldiers are not to abuse power. Each answer provides a hint about what people were doing that needed to change if they were going to repent and witness the Christ. How would John the Baptist answer you if you asked the same question? I’d probably hear: Give from your resources, not just your abundance. Take more time to pray. Pay attention to the person who challenges you or frightens you. Take time to ask God, “What do I need to do to live Jesus this Advent?” What might you hear? Asking someone you trust that question might point you in the needed direction. When we were baptized with water and the Holy Spirit, we promised to live Jesus and to see and be His presence in concrete ways. Belonging to Christ is reason for great rejoicing. Hear Zephaniah’s words addressed to you: God rejoices over us. The Lord has removed judgment against us. Then treat others as God has treated you so that others can rejoice. Believe these words. Live with rejoicing. Remove anxiety from your hearts. Let kindness abound in ways that help others see Jesus and experience God’s love. Then dance with great rejoicing.

It is through the free gift of self that one truly finds oneself. This gift is made possible by the human person’s essential “capacity for transcendence.”… As a person, he can give himself to another person or to other persons, and ultimately to God who is the author of our being and who alone can fully accept our gift. Man is alienated if he refuses to transcend himself and to live the experience of self-giving and of the formation of an authentic human community oriented toward his final destiny, which is God. — CENTESIMUS ANNUS Indifference in the face of human suffering, passivity before the causes of pain in the world, cosmetic remedies which lead to no deep healing of persons and peoples: These are grave sins of omission, in the face of which every person of good will must be converted and listen to the cry of those who suffer. — MEETING WITH THE SICK AND SUFFERING, 1998 There is no room in the world for selfishness. It destroys the meaning of life; it destroys the meaning of love; it reduces the human person to a subhuman level. — MEETING WITH YOUTH, NEW ORLEANS, 1987 Pope John Paul II — In My Own Words

Celebrate Christmas with Oplatek

Dec. 12/13 $3/package

Oplatek will be sold after all Masses this weekend for those wanting to participate in this centuries old custom. Oplatek, Holy Bread, is our Christmas oblation and the

Christmas wafer is reminiscent of the word Bethlehem, which means “House of Bread.” The breaking of bread with family in your home is a sign of charity, unity, and friendship. With prayer for God’s grace and for the welfare of the present/absent members of the family, the broken wafer pieces are distributed to each one at the table.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Third Sunday of Advent Pope Francis chose to inaugurate the Jubilee Year of Mercy on Dec. 8 as it marked the 50th anniversary of the

closing of Vatican II. That Council, inaugurated a new phase in the Church's history. The Spirit called the Church to tear down the walls that for far too long had made it a fortress, and to proclaim the Gospel in a new, more accessible way. Pope Francis quotes Saint John XXIII in declaring the Church's preference for "the medicine of mercy," and Blessed Paul VI in proposing the Good Sa-maritan as our model for discipleship. He adds that God's mercy is "the beating heart of the Gospel," and that mercy "must penetrate the heart and mind" of every disciple. Three times today's Gospel asks, "What should I do?" Pope Francis would say: Imitate Jesus, who came not wielding the fiery judgment that John the Baptist had threatened, but instead imparting healing, compassion, forgiveness--mercy! Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

T here are many situations that occur in our lives

where we might have to apologize to someone or another person might have to apologize to us. Which apology sounds more sincere: when a person says, “I'm sorry” or when a person says, “I'm sorry I called you a name. I know that this hurt your feelings, and I'll try not to do it again.” Apologies often sound more sincere when we can be specific about what we are sorry about and then identify specific changes we will try to make to act differently in the future. In today's Gospel, we hear people ask John the Baptist what is needed for their repentance. John makes specific, concrete suggestions for each of the groups who question him. Our desire to make ready for Jesus will be more sincere if we can identify one specific change we might make in our lives to prepare the way of the Lord.

What Is Baptism? Baptism is the way out of the kingdom of death into life, the gateway to the Church, and the beginning of a lasting communion with God. Baptism is the foundational sacrament and the prerequisite for all other sacraments. It unites us with Jesus Christ, incorporates us into His redemptive death on the Cross, thereby freeing us from the power of Original Sin and all personal sins, and causes us to rise with Him to a life without end. Since Baptism is a covenant with God, the individual must say Yes to it. In the Baptism of children, the parents confess the Faith on behalf of the children.

How Is Baptism Administered? The classical form of administering Baptism is the threefold immersion of the candidate in the water. Usually, however, water is poured three times over the head of the candidate, while the minister of the sacrament speaks the words, "N., I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Water symbolizes cleansing and new life, which was already expressed in the Baptism of repentance performed by John the Baptist. The Baptism that is administered with water "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" is more than a sign of conversion and repentance; it is new life in Christ. That is why the ceremony also includes the signs of anointing, the white garment, and the Baptismal candle. (YOUCAT questions 194-195)

Mission Statement We, the members of St. Anthony Catholic Church, gather together to worship and celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to live the Gospel in our daily lives. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to invite, inform, inspire and ignite the community in our faith journey by fostering stewardship through sharing of our gifts of time, talent and treasure. We are further called to share our faith through active evangelization and charitable outreach.
