PASTOR Dear Friends:
This Sunday, September 17th, 2017 is Catechetical Sunday. In 1935, the Vatican published “On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Education.” This document asked every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teaching ministry and to
honor those who serve the Christian community as catechists. As a result of this, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
(USCCB) designated the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday. It is set aside as a time to recognize this essential ministry of
the Church. This year the theme of Catechetical Sunday is: “LIVING AS MISSIONARY DISCIPLES”. We joyfully join our catechists in
celebrating the wonderful ministry of being a catechist. Jesus Christ is the life and mission of the Church; we join together to celebrate
those women, men and young people who serve our parishes by bringing the Word of God into the hearts of others. The English words
catechesis, catechetics, catechism, catechist, catechumen and catechumenate derive from the Greek word, “Katechein” which means
“to echo, or resound.” A catechist is commissioned and designated by the Church “to echo, or resound”, to hand down its faith tradition,
to introduce the Christian Gospel message and the main elements of our faith to young people or adult converts. Although parents,
religious, pastors and the faith community at large are to be engaged in this process, the term “catechist” refers to the designated person.
We here at St. Patrick’s and St. Anne’s are blessed to have wonderful catechists and we are very proud of these men and women who have
responded very generously to this noble mission and ministry. Now and always, we take off our hats and salute, honor, encourage and wish
them well and thank them for all they do. We are continually reminded that visibly recognizing the gifts of the commissioned ministry of the
catechist is so important not only to the catechists themselves, but also to our faith communities, to see what value there is in catechetical
formation. Catechetical Sunday is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the
faith and being a witness to the Gospel as well as to re-dedicating himself or herself to this mission as a community of faith. This ministry
of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only
fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think about our responsibility to share our
faith with others. Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. While the
catechesis offered within the family is ordinarily informal, unstructured, and spontaneous, it is no less crucial for the development of the
child’s faith. In a certain sense nothing replaces family catechesis, especially for its positive and receptive environment, for the example of
adults, and for its first explicit experience and practice of the faith. The catechesis of infants and young children nourishes the beginnings
of the life of faith. God’s love is communicated to infants and young children primarily through parents. Parents have shared the gift of
human life with their children and, through Baptism, have enriched them with a share in God’s own life. They have the duty to nourish it.
Their faith, their attitude toward other human beings, and their trust in a loving God strongly influence the development of the child’s faith.
Parents are catechists precisely because they are parents. Their role in the formation of Christian values in their children is irreplaceable.
They should speak naturally and simply about God and their faith, as they do about other matters they want their children to understand
and appreciate. It is the kind of formation that aims at sharing the Catholic way of life - and this is nurtured first and foremost around the
home table, the domestic church where the parents are to be the best and first teachers of the faith to their children. We thank and give praise to God for all people in the world-wide Church who give their time and talent to religious education. It is a very
important ministry and all the people involved in it are sharing in a hallmark of discipleship. Faith formation and religious education have
the mandate of the Risen Christ: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). It is more than the acquisition of knowledge; it involves awakening, nourishing and developing faith. Thanks to
all of you catechists, parents, guardians, students and very special thanks to our Directors of Faith Formation, Annette Lorenzen and Kyle
Haffey. May the Good Lord bless all of you for your dedication in this ministry. May you always strive to share with others what you derive
from pondering The Word. May you gladly join those you teach in honoring and serving the Lord’s name as you “echo” and proclaim His
message of faith, hope and love to all nations. Continue taking seriously your role of making your Catholic households places where faith
is passed on to the next generation. Let us all take a moment to thank, congratulate, appreciate, honor, and recognize our catechists.
Something to think about: “When the outlook is poor, try up-look”
Peace and Blessings to you! Fr. Masabakhwa, R.

Seminarian Collection
The diocesan-wide Special Collection for Seminarians
will be conducted this weekend. Gifts to this

associated with seminarians, which continually rise.
There are 18 seminarians in the Diocese of Des
Moines. The need for your support is critical so that
we may continue providing for our seminarians. Your
gift to this important appeal makes the difference for
our faith leaders of tomorrow by providing necessary
educational funding. The average cost to educate one
seminarian is approximately $30,000 each year. Please
experience the joy of giving and join us as we work
together to continue God’s work. Thank you!
