FROM THE EDITOR: Brothers,
There has been much busyness for me in April as I’ve been setting up the new council website at
http://www.kofc7131.org. That’s the same address as it has been, but we have installed all-new content
management software at a new web host with more features and better accessibility.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, the main feature of this software is that it is a blog. (That’s short for
“web log”, because it’s used most often as a kind of online diary.) At any time on any given day, contributors
on the site can create new articles that, when published, appear at the top of the front page as new content.
Others reading the new article can in turn post comments, creating a kind of conversation about the topic.
Simple blogs have been around since the early 2000’s, but today’s blog software like the one we use (called
WordPress), can do more than just post articles and comments. We can also create static pages on which we
can post permanent (though always editable) information, such as the About Us page, telling the story of our
Council, our mission in the Church and in the community. Other pages I’ve already created list prior issues of
Knight Life, and the Minutes of previous General Business meetings.
Additionally, through the use of plugins and widgets, we can create and display some really fancy dynamic
content. The best example of this is the new Events Calendar, where we can list any upcoming dinners, degree
exemplifications, and so on. By checking in on the calendar, you can always have an easy reminder of what the
Council is doing throughout the month.
The most exciting thing about this whole system is that no one person need provide all the content. Any
brother, member of the Ladies Auxiliary, family member, etc. can register for an account and be given access
rights to the system. For security purposes, how much you can do with the software will depend on the level
of permissions you get. Initially, the webmasters and the Grand Knight are Administrators (having all
permissions), the DGK, Chancellor, and Warden are Editors (the ability to author and publish posts), and any
other council member can request to be a Contributor (the ability to author posts, published by Admins or
Editors after review). Feel free to visit the site and register for an account, and I will set up your permissions as
soon as possible.
Thanks to all the work that went into this, and an entire week of my time lost to a business trip to Nevada, I
regretfully made little progress on Knight Life. Yet again we have no columns (other than this one), and I failed
to get any photos that might have been taken during the Italian Dinner / Priest Appreciation night. But as a
change of pace, and in honor of our Mother and Patroness, I decided instead to offer you a little culture on the
front page in the form of Diego Velázquez’ painting The Coronation of the Virgin. Remember brothers, that
May is the Month of Mary, so we should all be praying extra Rosaries to the Queen of Martyrs this month. This
image of the Holy Trinity crowning the Queen of Heaven is frequently used when meditating on the fifth
decade of the Glorious Mysteries. Use that as some inspiration to take your Rosary out of your pocket and
fulfill your pledge to her.
