MASS INTENTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:

November 13th, 2016, 33rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Today’s readings paint a somewhat frightening picture of the end of time. But the Gospel ends with the assurance to faithful stewards that those who persevere will be saved.

The Rosary in a time of distraction, by Archbishop Jose H. Gomez: When we pray the rosary, our thoughts are turned with loving attention to Jesus — to the

mysteries of his life, to the face of God that he shows to us. The rosary opens our hearts to God’s plan, his loving will for our lives. This prayer teaches us to listen and to watch — as the Virgin Mary did — for the signs of God’s purposes and work in our daily lives. This prayer teaches us to trust God and seek to do his will in our lives — again, as Mary did. The more we reflect on the life of Jesus, the more we realize that everything he did came from a deep place of prayer, from his loving dialogue with the Father. Big decisions, important gestures — all were made after periods of intense and deliberate prayer. And of course, Jesus is our model. Even with all the duties and pressures we face, we need to make time for our relationship with God — every day. Just getting up 15 minutes earlier in the morning may give us the time we need to begin our day with prayer. Of course, that means going to bed a little earlier — even though we may think we still have work that “needs to get done.” Pray for me and I will be praying for you. And let us ask our Blessed Mother Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, to help us to grow closer to Jesus and be like him — to make prayer the center of our lives. You can follow Archbishop Gomez daily via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

NEW WORLD OF FAITH

Kids Living Faith: Sunday, November 13th, 2016 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed.

- Luke 21:17-18

Adults sometimes argue about crazy things like money or who should lead the country. But can you imagine people hating someone just because of a name? Jesus told His apostles that would happen, and He was right. The apostles were thrown in jail and brought before judges, all because they preached in Jesus’ name. But we know the apostles will never be destroyed and neither will we. It’s all because of one name—Jesus. Thanks to Jesus, we will live in happiness with Him forever.

Jesus, I will praise your name forever.

Reflections on Today’s Readings:

FOCUS: Jesus gives us the grace and strength needed to persevere in faith. Throughout His life and ministry, Jesus taught clearly that there is a cost to living as His faithful disciples. We may be rejected or persecuted for the sake of our faith. We need not fear, however, for Jesus promises to give us the grace and strength to persevere.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading explains that the day is coming when the Lord will punish evildoers, but bring healing to the just. Paul’s words in Thessalonians urge those who are idle to keep busy and work quietly to earn their own food. In the Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that He will give them a wisdom in speaking that will render their adversaries powerless to resist or refute.

Vatican Clarifies the Rules for Cremation: Bury, Don’t Scatter

The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has issued new guidelines for cremation for Catholics. Cremation has been permitted in the Catholic Church since 1963, but many Catholics don't know there are also many rules surrounding the choice. According to the new guidelines, burial is still preferred, but cremation is an option. When a loved one has been cremated, their ashes must be kept intact, the same as one would treat a body. The ashes may not be separated or scat-tered. Instead, they should remain in a proper vessel that is interred in a proper place, such as a cemetery or church. Only the bishop can authorize an exception to this storage requirement in extraordinary circumstances.

Bullying prevention starts at home - From cyberbullying to name-calling and exclusion, bullying can

affect people of every age, especially kids and teens in school. Their peers can be cruel, so it’s important to talk about how to handle bullies, especially before a situation escalates. One way to stop the cycle of bully-ing in its tracks, is to teach kids to speak kindly to others and to treat everyone around them with respect. For more information, please visit https://www.faithandsafety.org/bullying.
