would have been happy to just write songs.” His experience in college helped shape his writing, too. “The diversity of my social experiences here and connecting with people from different backgrounds [contributed],” he says. One of his chart-toppers as a writer, “Cop Car,” is based on an actual experience. “That happened right here,” he says, grinning. Since his run with the team, UAB shuttered its football pro-gram for financial reasons, reviving it this season after a $44 million fundraising campaign by local businesses. “I’m here to get folks excited about the return of UAB Football, not for me or my music,” Hunt says, adding he’s hoping to be back for a few games. “I’m so proud to see the rally from the students and the support of the city.”

During the tour, Hunt tells UAB Dir./Athletics Mark In-gram how impressed he is. “It’s great to see the school did this right,” he says, noting the barber’s chair in the locker room where players can get free haircuts. Ingram presented Hunt with a new UnderArmour jersey (the school switched from Nike in a $1 million-plus deal this year), with his former No. 3 and “Hunt” on the back. The visit ended on the team’s new practice field. Head Coach Bill Clark introduced Hunt to the team and expressed how his dedication to a career in music blossomed while he was at UAB. Hunt addressed the players briefly before they broke for the last practice before their game Saturday vs. Alabama A&M. The Blaz-ers won 38-7.

The day was captured by ESPN cameras and will be featured tonight (9/5) on Marty Smith’s America on ESPN2. Smith told Country Aircheck he “stumbled on video of Hunt slinging the ball against Florida State” while doing research for the story. (See the footage here.) A country fan who lives near Charlotte, Smith was determined to include Hunt in his story. “I saw he was repre-sented by Red Light and I called my pal Chuck Swaney to hook it up.” Swaney and Smith met when the former worked with North Carolinian Eric Church at EMI. See Smith’s feature on UAB’s return to football here. The visit to the new facility ended with Hunt and Smith throw-ing the football on the practice field, then the reporter running routes while the singer was slinging more passes. And the capper, Smith catching the ball and taking it all the way to the end zone, punctuating the play by slamming the ball into the goal post pad. Hunt’s performance that night included him telling stories about his time in Birmingham including “the incident” at the airport where “Cop Car” was inspired. He and then-girlfriend Hannah Lee Fowler (now wife) had parked too close the runway when the authorities came knocking on the window. The cool evening and enthusiastic fans made for a truly special pep rally for the school. After the concert, Hunt was off to Atlanta where he was the guest picker on the 2017 debut of ESPN Gameday Saturday morning (9/2). He picked UCLA, Iowa, South Carolina, LSU, Michigan, Tennessee and Alabama, who all won. His only loss was West Virginia to Virginia Tech.. And, yes, he wore his UAB hat. –Paul Williams

Chart Chat Congrats to Old Dominion, Steve Hodges, Dennis Reese and the RCA promotion team on scoring this week’s No. 1 with “No Such Thing As A Broken Heart.” The song is the first single from the band’s album Happy Endings. Writers are Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Brad Tursi and Jesse Frasure. And kudos to Katie Bright and the WMN regionals on notching 31 adds for Cole Swindell’s “Stay Downtown,” topping this week’s board.

Cameron Duddy, Mark Wystrach and Jess Carson of Big Machine's Midland discuss their most influential music:1. History of Eagles Tour: I saw them open the Forum a few years before Glenn Frey passed away. That week Jess sent me and Mark a work tape of "14 Gears" (a song we would later record that started us on our path as a band). It was serendipity

– seeing the Eagles in their element, singing perfect harmonies, playing hit after hit. It brought everything into focus. (CD)2. Bruce Springsteen's Darkness On The Edge of Town: Watch the documentary on The Boss making this album. It's a meditation on hard work and overcoming the debilitating fear of expectation. (CD)3. Merle Haggard: Perhaps the most authentic American singer/songwriter in all of music. He had one of the most unique and perfectly controlled pleading voices. He was country, soul, blues and rock wrapped up into one perfectly fallible and lovable persona. I personally worship the ground he walked on. (MW)4. John Conlee's "Rose Colored Glasses": Saturday nights at my family's country honky tonk, my mother would request it and the Gary Skinner Trio would do a spot-on rendition that would bring the entire bar onto the dance floor, everyone singing drunkenly along. John Conlee's recording captures a spirit that elevates your soul straight into the heavens. (MW)5. Bruce Springsteen: Seeing Bruce live made me reconsider what it means to be a great performer. The three of us saw him together in Dallas. It was like, "Class is in session." (JC)• Highly regarded music you've actually never heard: Ed Sheeran. I know he is one of the biggest artists in the world, but I couldn't recite two seconds of any of his records. (MW)• "Important" music you just don't get: I'm a music nerd and enjoy everything, but DeadMau5 synth-pop sounds like robots trying to kill each other. (MW)• An album you listened to incessantly: Bob Dylan's Desire. Bob collaborated with Jacques Levy on songs so dense with narrative, each one was a short story. Emmylou Harris sings on most of the songs. "Hurricane" is on that album. Some credit it for getting Rubin Carter released from prison. How many people can say that about a song? (JC)• An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Jackson Browne's "Rosie." It's an incredible song about going home alone with Rosie. (CD)• Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: “My son watches Sesame Street. The "Elmo's World" theme song is fire. (CD)

News & Notes The National Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago will open a “100 Years of Radio” exhibit in Fall 2019. “This is an exciting time as we get to innovate and modernize the presentation of our museum’s rich history,” says Chairman Kraig T. Kitchin. The new display will feature microphones of iconic personalities and instruments from live radio theater productions. More here. Rocking M has flipped Hot AC KKGQ/Wichita to Texas/Red Dirt Country «Kansas Country 92.3.» It will compete with Scripps KFDI and Classic Country KTFI-AM, iHeartMedia KZSN and Classic Country KVWF, which the company has agreed to purchase from Connoisseur. No word from the station on staffing. Charles Murphy joined Alaska Broadcast KYKU/Juneau as Dir./News. BMG will release Wanda Jackson’s autobiography Every Night Is Saturday Night: A Country Girl’s Journey to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nov. 14. John Conlee was recently awarded the first ever Legends Award by the Kentucky Country Music Association. Southern Halo will perform on the British Country Music Association Awards Oct. 22. Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers have signed a management deal with The Holland Group. Gatlin has also signed with Huskins-Harris for daily business management.

Jordan Walker and Johnny McGuire of Wheelhouse’s Walker McGuire put an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KWFS/Wichita Falls, TX. Big D & Bubba in the morning. (JW) The first time I heard “Til

Tomorrow” on the radio was in Pensacola, FL. We were in the back of our bus. It was one of our most ridiculous Facebook posts ever, because we were dancing around like it was a rap song. (JW) Our driver Ron is a redneck guy from Kentucky – and he’d be proud of me calling him that. His wife is a big foodie. We went everywhere from New York City to San Diego on radio tour. Every time we’d stop for dinner, he’d send her a picture of his food and she would blog about it. That’s one of my favorite memories. If you saw him – tattoos, really built and wears Harley Davidson shirts – he just doesn’t look like the kind of guy who’d take food pictures. (JW) Every time we go to a truck stop, I get a Gatorade and some Welch’s Fruit Snacks. (JW) I’d love to have dinner with my great-granddad, Oscar Joe Walker. He was an influential guy in my hometown and a baseball coach. He died when I was seven. We’d probably have a burger and a beer, and talk baseball and life. (JW) My last impulse buy was a way overpriced zip-up hoodie at the Nike Outlet in Seattle – which I for some reason bought in the summer. And I’d just had my wallet stolen at a McDonald’s, so Jordan had to buy it for me. (JM) The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is use a bunch of different tapes – Gorilla Glue tape, some duct tape – when one of our trailer wheel wells fell off. And that sucker has stayed on there for about six months. (JM) I wish I’d written Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue.” It’s the perfect example of a troubadour song of a love journey. (JM) My least favorite interview question ... this will sound sappy, but I could still be working a desk job selling software. So it’s really hard for me to find any tough questions. But it does get monotonous telling how we met. I’ve probably answered that 500 times this year. (JM) I’d love to be stuck in Santa Monica. It was incredibly beautiful. The people were awesome and the food was great. (JM)

Q: Celebrity You Wouldn’t Want To Be Seated Next To On A Plane A: Kanye West (No. 1 answer) Mac recognizes that not all listeners play along, so the station tried to make the game fun for the “non-players.” Well-attended shows with Chris Stapleton, Florida Georgia Line and Billy Currington also connected the dots on the music side during the ratings peri-od. WCOW/Sparta, WI: PD/morning show co-host Arnie Andrews says the station rode a wave of ACM, CMA and Wisconsin Associa-tion of Broadcasters awards. “We made a big deal out of it in all our imaging,” he says. They also added a Cash Jackpot contest in morning drive. Like KCLR, the game used Family Feud type questions and awarded CDs, gift cards and cash. It allowed players to stop at any time or risk it all for the jackpot. A couple

of big concert events were also the center of the station’s promo-tion efforts. “We gave away tickets to see Tim & Faith and did an on-air show with the tour,” Andrews says. “Our CountryFest VIP Promotions lasted a month and a half of the book.” The event in Cadot, WI featured Blake Shelton, Eric Church, Thomas Rhett and Alabama plus another 30 acts. “It’s a destination for our listeners,”

he says. “We broadcast live the entire week-end.” Ratings were steady in all dayparts with market veteran Mike In The Midday seeing an increase and new afternoon host Jason Brooks hitting the ground running in March. KIXQ/Joplin, MO: “We’ve got such a good formula in place,” says PD/morning host Randy Brooks. “The last 11 years there was one fluctuation and that’s when the station strayed from the plan.” He attributes music trends to any highs or lows. “Country

is coming back to our roots, dancing with the one that brung us.” Looking at his power recurrent research, he cites Blake Shelton’s “A Guy With A Girl,” Morgan Wallen and Jon Pardi as performing well for the station. In terms of contesting, the Secret Sound cash game is a staple. “Our listeners call and ask when it’s going to happen every year. And our first-ever St. Jude Radiothon really co-alesced our audience.” Partners In Hope received tickets to a local Brantley Gilbert show for their pledge. The station also localized the effort by interviewing local patient families for custom story songs with Rascal Flatts’ “Every Day,” Darius Rucker’s “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” and The Band Perry’s “If I Die Young.” Put-ting them together “was one of the most emotionally exhausting experiences you can have,” Brooks admits. He also cites Audience Development Group’s Tim Moore, a 10-year station partner, as a great competitive resource. Look for more from format market leaders next week.

Editorial: CMA Says Hush There was a time when awards season meant a cascade of packages and mailers, congratulatory advertising, banners, billboards, yard signs and general excitement. Those days ended two years ago when the CMA created a policy prohibiting the aforementioned as "vote solicitation." Beyond the strained logic in turning down the volume on pre-awards buzz, these rules are also patently unfair and potentially cast the CMA in a bad light with many of its members. Full disclosure: Country Aircheck has staunchly opposed this policy since its inception, in large part because it hurts our business. That CMA would prohibit a company from certain aspects of its normal operation is onerous. What music publisher wants to be told when/if it can pitch songs? Which labels wish for CMA to block the sale of their music? But while central to Country Aircheck and a few other companies, those issues are to the side of several more important concerns for the larger industry. These policies (ACM has a similar rule prohibiting direct mail and emails) were designed to eliminate what had become costly and time consuming mailer campaigns. Several of the biggest labels and most prominent managers, fatigued with the arms race in producing elaborate marketing, pushed CMA and ACM to implement and enforce rules for the whole industry. Understandable, as it's difficult to tell an artist they aren't worth the time and expense if the competing artist across the street is getting a big push. So while these restrictions may be cost-effective for perennial awards season favorites – big labels, top artists – the perhaps unintended consequence is that they are discriminatory toward others. For many, receiving a major awards nomination is a huge coup in and of itself, one they might wish to shout from the rooftops. A nominated independent artist has a strong interest in raising their profile with radio, publishers, songwriters, media and others in the CMA membership. Denying their ability to send mailers, advertise and raise banners/billboards is simply not fair. Further, pitting CMA or ACM against certain portions of their own constituencies sets a terrible precedent. At best, these policies cloud the waters of collaboration necessary for a trade organization to function. At worst, they cast CMA and ACM as tools of the big against the small. Finally, prohibiting marketing – any marketing – that supports an upcoming awards show is nonsensical. Some artist camps will choose to go silent for fear of violating the ban, others will work around it by omitting mention of the awards. In a sense, it's asking the country music industry to not make a big deal about its biggest deal. So, by all means, get excited about the nominations. Just don't do it loudly.
