and service flexibility. Gateway’s paper recycling business grew to offer the purchase of all grades of paper, including: cardboard; office paper; newspaper; roll stock; text books; print shop waste; and coated paper. The company is equipped with the technology to recycle all of these paper grades at the primary Gateway facility in Cleveland.

After establishing a strong foundation of customers in the greater Cleveland area, and in the business corridor stretching to Sandusky, OH, Gateway expanded by opening a facility in Toledo, OH during July of 2001. With trained and competent service personnel, Gateway was able to implement a growing portfolio of flexible and cost-efficient removal, collection and recovery programs for waste and recyclables.

Operational support for Gateway’s customer-dedicated sales & service team grew as well. Servicing a wide variety of customers, particularly for OCC, called for staged trailers and a fleet of trucks equipped with liftgates and tow motors that allow Gateway to handle ground pick-ups as well as dock pick-ups. Experience with managing complex routing, and coordinating date & time specific pick-up schedules gave Gateway a ‘logistical edge’ when the company embarked on their secure destruction business.

According to Tom Sustersic, the launch of Gateway Confidential in May of 2003 was a direct response to “an urgent need at a time when identity theft was becoming a big issue. Our office paper recycling programs kept us close to business clients and their concerns,” he continued, “and we knew that as paper recyclers, we could provide a unique closed-loop system and total security environment for confidential document and material destruction.”

Initially, Gateway Confidential offered an on-site shredding service utilizing one shred truck. Gateway also became a NAID member, and underwent the process of obtaining, and maintaining NAID AAA certification for their on-site secure destruction. “It was important for us to gain professional security accreditation from the get-go,” Tom said, “it established the standards that guide our company development and facility operations, and that our customers rely on.”

Gateway’s on-site confidential destruction services required an extension of the companies’ collection container & console options, as well. Adding a full line of secure consoles for placement within customer office premises or facility locations provided the first link in Gateway’s secure chain of custody.

Gateway Recycling took a monumental step forward in October of 2005 when it upsized into a 135,000 square foot plant in Cleveland, converting a vacant Budweiser distribution warehouse into a multi-purpose facility, complete with office space.

Gateway was now able to “resize for the future, and follow the model” in Tom’s words. “The design of this building is in three discreet sections, and it allowed us to host a highly secure, closed-loop, off-site confidential destruction operation,” Tom explained. “We were able to completely sequester the

confidential destruction area.” With a well-defined business model in hand, Gateway embarked on research into shredding equipment and balers.

Gateway’s initial concern was to satisfy all customer and regulatory requirements that confidential documents, materials and products be shredded ‘beyond intelligibility or possible reconstruction’ in a totally safe, controlled, verified, and secure environment. But as an experienced paper recycler, Gateway was also concerned about the bale uniformity requirements of the paper mills that would be purchasing their material.

“Our business model was based on producing ‘export quality bales’ with our shredding system, and that means obtaining ‘uniformity of particle gradation’” Tom explained. “We are acutely aware of how these factors impact market value. To take costs out of the supply chain, overseas commodity markets have to maximize containerized shipping, which is ‘greener’, as well,” he continued.

Gateway installed its first shredder, a Cresswood single-shaft, slow speed model back in June 2007. According to Tom, this particular style of shredder was a good fit for them because they wanted to be able to produce a very small shred size for customers who required it.

The guiding principal for Gateway’s secure destruction operations is to “eliminate any chance of a security breach with our unique ability to ‘close the loop & snap it shut’,” Tom said. “Confidential material is delivered through the security portal to the confidential room where it is shredded, and then sent directly into the recycling process through a baling system that they purchased from IPS Balers. It is then delivered direct to the mill where it is further pulped and destroyed during the process of manufacturing a new product.”

Upstream collection in Gateway’s Off-Site Confidential Destruction is provided by two vault trucks operated by trained and certified employees. “With the vault trucks, there is no need to exchange consoles, which is an additional reverse logistics savings,” Tom said. All materials from secure consoles are placed in the vault truck, the truck is locked, and the security system is activated.

At the Gateway facility, the vault truck is cleared through security, and enters into the secure destruction area. Gateway employees remove all materials to be destroyed from the vault truck, and dump them directly onto the ‘dump & go’ inclined conveyor to the shredder. All materials are shredded into pre-determined particle sizes that meet industry standards, and are discharged onto an inclined reverse-belt conveyor. At elevation, material is securely directed either to the baler, sized to the output of the shredder (90% of material), or to a secure bulk storage area (10% of material) for blending or final destruction.

According to Tom, having a fully integrated system, and sizing the equipment properly, has enabled them to save on utility costs. “We haven’t reached capacity with this system – but we bought to exceed our immediate need, and we’re growing the business every year, with plant-based, off-site secure

Some 30 minutes before Arcadia University in Pennsylvania was set to open up its “One Stop Drop” community

recycling event, cars were already lined up, each filled with boxes of paper destined for the free shredding service.

“If we tell them it starts at 11 a.m., people are there at 10:30 and waiting,” says Kasey Lynch, student supervisor with the Office of Community Service.

Similar scenes are playing out across the U.S. every weekend as community paper shredding events are offered, providing the public with a way to meet its pent-up demand for securely disposing of documents containing sensitive personal information that could, in the wrong hands, be used for identity theft or other nefarious purposes.

“Most of the shredding events we do are from 9 to 12 on a Saturday morning and we’re usually ready to go by 8:30 a.m. and people are already there waiting,” says Don Adriaansen, a partner and co-owner of Titan Mobile Shredding in Doylestown,

Pa. “We joke how it’s just like a garage sale with all the early birds that show up.”

“People are very excited [about being able to shred their documents],” adds Peter Klebanoff, owner and general manager of PROSHRED in Orange County, Calif. “They come from miles around.”

PRISM International is pleased to announce that registration for their 31st Annual Conference, to be held on May 10-12 at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, Florida is now open. Registration is open to members and non-members of PRISM International and features industry education and networking in the areas of records and information management,

confidential destruction, data protection and imaging and conversion services.A new feature for 2011 is a special ForoLatinoAmericano to be held on May 9 and 10. All

sessions at this forum will be conducted in Spanish. Attendees may register for the forum separately or as a part of the overall conference registration fee. The forum will include a tour of a records management facility in Miami, as well as access to the industry exhibition held in conjunction with the PRISM International Annual Conference. This is the first Latin American Forum held in conjunction with the PRISM International conference.

The conference will also feature body language expert Janine Driver who will help unravel the mystery of interpreting subtle signals associated with buying, objections or gaps in communication. Driver has appeared on numerous television programs and is the author of the book, “You Say More Than You Think: How to Use the New Body Language to Get What You Want”. Because non-verbal communication is such a critical part of sales, negotiation, and management you will not want to miss this session.

Compliance and regulatory issues remain a core interest of members of the industry. In particular, HIPAA has created a vast area of risk. With fines now applying to business associates and data breach costs skyrocketing to over $200 per person, per breach, business owners cannot afford to be unprepared when dealing with health care clients. The 2011 conference features several sessions that explore such critical areas of HIPAA preparedness as policy development, training and risk mitigation through special insurance products.

The 2011 conference features an industry-specific tradeshow dedicated to products and services used in the industry. An additional series of roundtable sessions provide a more in-depth view of how new products and services can help improve efficiency, manage risk and improve profitability. In addition the March issue of PRISM International’s magazine InFocus will provide a look at some of these products and services, as well as more information about the conference, exhibition and sessions.

PRISM International Opens Annual Conference Registration

Over the two-day event held earlier this year by Arcadia University and the Office of Community Service, nearly nine tons of paper — everything from medical records to bank and tax documents — was shredded, according to Lynch, who served as student coordinator of the event the previous year. Document destruction was a key part of the activities, which also included collecting clothes, toys, canned goods, school supplies and other items for recycling or donation to various community organizations. The event was held on Sunday and Monday, Jan. 16-17, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

For NEXCUT Shredding, the event at the Glenside, Pa., campus was just the latest in a series of activities in which it has participated. Such events, whether sponsored by

municipalities, schools or private businesses, are a win-win-win situation, allowing sponsors to offer a valuable service to new and potential clients, helping shredding companies attract future customers and create goodwill, and positioning both as stewards of the environment.

“I think it goes to the level of PR-plus for the company that actually offers it — and for us as well,” says Nathan Hesterman, manager of NEXCUT Shredding. “Most people do not think it’s affordable to have a mobile shredding service come to their house and shred their six boxes of 20-year-old tax files and all of a sudden they see a free shredding event. Then when they need service, we are at their top of the mind and they’ll call us as opposed to shopping around. We get referral business from people who bring their documents to the free shredding events.

“I wouldn’t say it’s the most successful free advertising. It’s not like a windfall of business comes from it. But it absolutely is good business,” he says.

NEXCUT specializes in providing mobile document destruction services in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The company, which has been in operation for about five years, is based in Kearny, N.J.

Shredding companies interviewed for this article approach community events in different ways and offer varying reasons for their involvement.

Some, such as NEXCUT and Titan, the latter of which has been offering document destruction services in southeastern Pennsylvania since 2005, charge a minimal fee for the community events. PROSHRED, launched in August 2009, provides its community shredding services for free while partnering with local businesses. It has nine community shredding events scheduled in 2011 in Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Tustin in partnership with luxury real estate brokerage Surterre Properties in Orange County, which hosts the events.

“We want to give back to our community,” Klebanoff says in explaining why he offers the document destruction service at no charge. “We think it’s important to do that.”

Adriaansen says the majority of community events in which Titan Mobile Shredding participates are sponsored by banks and credit unions, which promote the activities for both current customers

Robert, an accomplished medical doctor, worried about the proper way to address a group of his colleagues at an upcoming convention. Because the keynote address was before the Cuban-American Physicians’ Association he wanted to make sure he was using the right terms. He did not want to offend anyone at the

meeting by calling them Hispanic if he should say Latino or by saying Cuban if he should say Hispanic. Should Robert be anxious about the possible fallout of using the wrong label?

Yes - unfortunately! Robert’s anxiety was totally interfering with his ability to deliver a thoughtful and engaging keynote. The developing paralysis of political correctness was using all of his energy and creating the type of tension that derails collegial interaction and could cost his pharmaceutical company millions of dollars in present and future income.

Our world today is awash with incidents where a casual comment, remark or question can invoke profound misunderstandings and consequences. High profile examples include the firing of Juan Williams from NPR for a statement he made about being anxious when he sees people in traditional Muslim garb on airplanes, and the dismissal of White House press corps veteran Helen Thomas for comments she made about Israel’s occupation of Palestine.

One doesn’t have to be in the public eye to be affected by the fallout of violating political correctness standards. Many agonize over their word choice on even the most innocuous issues with an obsession that often borders on the absurd. A pre-school teacher overwhelmed when asked to explain the word “fairy” to her class; a British import asking if anyone has a fag; or a CEO addressing an all female audience as girls is enough to get the heart racing and

By valDa BoyD ForD

HR managers scurrying to do damage control. In far too many instances the purveyor of the politically incorrect term would be disciplined or fired.

At that point the whole organization becomes paralyzed. Those who once spoke openly now spend more time word-smithing than writing or speaking. Communication becomes stilted for fear of saying the wrong thing. Creativity flies out of the door.

Paralysis of political correctness is the fear that keeps people from doing their best in culturally and linguistically awkward situations; the fear that keeps everyone afraid of the word or phrase that shuts down communication and hurts both the sender and the receiver; that tongue-tied, stomach-churning sensation that makes you avoid talking with those who may need it the most.

Is there a cure? Perhaps what is needed is a dose of common sense stirred up within a soothing tea of good manners and critical thinking. The doctor preparing his presentation for the medical conference needed only to take a moment to analyze the situation. The answer to his question lay in the title of their organization: the Cuban-American Physicians’ Association. There is little doubt that the physicians know who they are and do not need a reference to their ethnicity. If, during the course of his speech he needs an accurate descriptor, Cuban-American is the obvious choice. However, addressing the physicians as “doctors” or colleagues will more than suffice.

Four basic fears can lead to the paralysis of political correctness: Fear based on lack of knowledge of client (colleague) needs and expectations; •Fear from regulatory and administrative reprisal; •Fear of lack of competence; and/or •Fear of being found out. •

The symptoms of PC Paralysis may cause many people to be hesitant in engaging in or moving forward with a conversation. If someone stammers and hesitates out of fear of saying the wrong thing, listeners may wonder about the reasons for the hesitancy, creating even more tension.

What is it that makes perfectly normal people freeze over seemingly simple messages when it involves someone of another race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, religion or physical ability? All are walking on eggshells because it is not known when the next errant word or phrase will result in protests, suspensions, or lawsuits.

The time is now for a return to common sense so well meaning, conscientious people can communicate honestly and authentically without being afraid of negative consequences.

The cure for the Paralysis of Political Correctness begins with these steps:

Acknowledge just how much fea1. r surrounds the possibility of offending others. Check written and unwritten rules to determine the cultural norms within the organization. Perhaps both formal and informal policies and procedures are in need of an overhaul if those policies usually lead to suspension or termination. Save harsh punishments for repeat offenders.

Recognize tha2. t PC Paralysis stops or cripples communication in what is perceived to be culturally awkward situations. Work to create a culture that is inclusive and accepting of simple gaffes and faux pas. Develop mechanisms for damage repair that include education and exposure to those who may be seen as different

(and the accompanying word - difficult).

Realize that extra3. ordinary efforts to tiptoe around potentially volatile words can be as offensive as a callous flippancy with those same words. Lunch and learn sessions are great venues for having open and safe (from censure) conversations about the scary word of the day.

Own up to uncer4. tainties up front as honest relationships are being built. Take steps to learn about the diversity of the workplace. Discomfort and fear diminish the more that is known about individuals and groups.

So, how is political correctness affecting

behavior and the ability to genuinely connect with others? Recovery begins when the fear is named and acknowledged. The follow-up includes open-minded discovery and education to learn about the diversity in the organization and the community. The cure is long but not necessarily bitter when coated with respectful intentions. With patience and a sense of humor, the paralysis of political correctness can go the way of the rotary phone - seen from time to time but not in regular use.

destruction as the foundation of our strategy,” Tom said.Currently, Gateway Recycling operates a shift and a half per day (13 – 14

hours), while Confidential Destruction consumes one eight hour shift. Document destruction occupies four hours per day, and is given immediate priority in the shredding schedule. Truckload quantities of secure product destruction “fills in the gap”, Tom related.

Gateway has cultivated niche markets for secure product destruction, particularly within the printing industry. “Printers have coupons, misprints, prototype & off-spec packaging – volumes of product – that require secure destruction”, Tom said. He added that they can remove the screens, and shred this material straight through the machine to a particle size that satisfies the customer.

As Gateway has been busy diversifying markets, maximizing inbound & outbound transportation, and expanding vertical integration to give the company more ‘economies of scope’, a master plan for future succession has been taking shape. “Any business has to look down the road in strategic planning, and we have focused on two elements – equipment, and refining our business model,” Tom said, “but that’s not enough, you’ve got to look through different eyes in order to stay on the cutting edge, and to re-energize the company vision, particularly with a family-based business.”

Shifting gears from her advertising job in Chicago, and armed with a marketing degree from Columbia College, Sandy Sustersic joined her parents at Gateway Recycling in 2007. She now serves as Director of Marketing and Human Resources for Gateway.

Sandy’s fiancé Ryan Palmier also left Chicago in 2007 to build a career at Gateway, where he is General Manager of the company. Ryan has a degree in communications from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and he is drawing on those skills to manage the demanding process of NAID certification for Gateway’s Off-Site Secure Destruction operation.

With the enthusiastic support of the entire team, Gateway has positioned itself as a ‘green & sustainable’ solutions provider across its service offerings.

As Sandy confided, “green has definitely made it into the dictionary with our customers.” Gateway also developed an accounting program that generates yearly Recycling Reports with a breakdown of information for each of its customers. “Customers are really eager and excited to get the reports where they can see and monitor their recycling over time. They care, and obviously take pride in the company when it creates less of a footprint, and saved resources,” Sandy said.

From creating an in-house ‘green’ program to reduce waste, conserve materials, and make more use of equipment, to adopting routing systems that are more efficient and limit emissions, Gateway Recycling is ‘walking the walk’ as a green-tech business. Gateway has adopted ‘smaller footprint’ transit trucks to provide service to customers with under a pallet load of material to pick up. “We’re finding new ways to improve the customer’s experience of our professional options for secure destruction and recycling – and that’s great advertising too,” Sandy shared. It sounds like someone’s got a clear eye on Gateway’s future growth!

– to help them prevent identity theft – and as a marketing tool to attract new members. “They’re looking to drive traffic into their business,” he explains.

The financial institutions publicize the events through such things as news releases, posters and mailers and Titan promotes the activities on its web site.

“We actually help drive traffic to our clients,” Andriaansen says. “We say to them, ‘This is an opportunity for you to showcase what you do. We just happen to be the company that does the shredding. It’s your opportunity to market your own business to those people that are there.’”

While the events tend to attract the public, Andriaansen says community shredding events don’t provide much publicity or substantial benefit for document destruction companies. One reason he cites is because of numerous similar events taking place. Titan does more than 25 events each year, usually every Saturday from mid-April to June and in September and October.

“In the metro area on any Saturday in the spring, you could probably find a dozen events going on. Publicity-wise for a shredding company it really doesn’t do anything. We rarely get commercial business out of it,” he says.

Klebanoff agrees. “It’s more for exposure,” he says of PROSHRED’s involvement. “We’re just servicing Orange County so we want to give back to the community and let everyone know we exist. Whether we get business directly from it or not, we’re doing a community service that I think is worthwhile and helps out local folks within Orange County and where we live.”

PROSHRED, which does a lot of residential shredding, promotes that service at the events. For people who don’t want to go to the expense of having a truck come to their house to shred documents, the company allows people to drop-off boxes of documents for destruction. That lower cost service attracts about a dozen or more individuals each week.

Hesterman says that while the weekend events may not generate much new business, any income from the activities is a bonus for the company, which normally would have its trucks sitting idle.

NEXCUT employees bring company brochures with them to the weekend events and talk up the services the firm offers. “You never know who you’re going

Cintas Opens New Document Imaging and Storage Facility in Atlanta

Atlanta, GA-Cintas Corporation has opened a new document imaging and storage facility in Atlanta reports businesswire.

com. Equipped with the latest document storage and imaging technology, the facility lets customers securely store and maintain easy access to sensitive business information and data. The new Cintas location fulfills the firm’s full range of document management capabilities.

Cintas is the first North American AAA NAID-certified and PCI DSS compliant document management provider. Its Atlanta location was designed to meet stringent standards set forth by these prestigious organizations. Its security diligence includes cameras to digitally record facility activity, the latest building access control technology, fleet vehicles with security cameras, GPS systems, FE25 fire suppression systems, customized locking systems and early suppression/fast response fire systems to extinguish fire regionally and prevent potential water damage. Additionally, Cintas’ eDelivery capabilities will find, scan and swiftly send any needed file through its proprietary InfoPort data system.

Cintas’ Atlanta operation also provides document imaging services to scan and store documents to increase productivity, improve business processes and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for its customers. The imaging process has been especially advantageous in applications involving business activities like accounts payable and human resource documentation. All documents are loaded into a searchable database that allows clients to securely retrieve information over the Web 24/7.

Rock-Tenn Buys Smurfit-Stone Container to Expand Containerboard

Norcross,GA-In a surprise move, Georgia-based Rock-Tenn Co. will buy Chicago’s Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. for $3.5

billion, becoming the continent’s second-biggest containerboard producer, reports twincities.com. Rock-Tenn bid $35 a share to expand Rock-Tenn’s operations to the Midwest and West Coast.

The growth in the containerboard market due to increased need for shipping boxes lets the firm benefit from rising prices and increased consumption by taking on Smurfit. Rock-Tenn is the state’s largest paper-recycling facility, processing recycled paper into cardboard. It recycles 1,100 tons of paper per day at its St. Paul paper mill into packaging for consumer products, but it had a small containerboard business.

to run into at events like this,” Hesterman says. He notes that some businesses who sponsor

a weekend shredding event may have an ulterior motive. “Most of the time it’s savvy business owners who have material that they need shredded by a service,” he says. “It’s a way to take advantage of a better rate as well as offering a service to friends, family and customers.”

Andriaansen says his emphasis is on attracting customers for his clients who sponsor the weekend shredding events. “We work hard with our clients to turn it into a worthwhile event for all of us,” he says. “If a shredding company was to go out and do all the promotion that needs to be done at one of these events, it would definitely be a losing proposition. You don’t get enough paper back to even pay to be out there.”

However, Shred-it, a major document shredding and recycling company, reports it has served as many as 2,000 people at one community shredding event, with more than 70 tons of paper recycled. The company organizes events in cities where it has locations.

Shred-it explains on its web site why it is involved in community shredding events. “Community Shred-it events increase the knowledge of identity theft, making our communities safer places to live. Generating goodwill with potential new clients and strengthening existing customer relationships also makes good business sense,” the company says.

Money paid by recyclers or paper mills for the shredded paper typically goes to the shredding companies to help offset their labor and equipment costs at the community events, according to Andriaansen, Klebanoff and Hesterman. Some document destruction companies will donate any net proceeds to local charities and community groups.

To ensure that everyone can have their documents shredded, limits are placed on the number of boxes or bags of papers an individual can bring for destruction —typically up to three or in some instances as many as 10 (Arcadia University doesn’t put a limit on how much can be brought for shredding). Items such as paper clips, staples and rubber bands do not have to be removed from the documents before they are shredded.

Klebanoff and Andriaansen say they shred an average of about 100 to 200 boxes of paper at each event. “We tell people [sponsors of the event] that if they get 100 people to come out that they did a good job,” Andriaansen says. “Some people show up with a paper bag, others will push the limit and show up with four boxes. It all depends on how its promoted.”

One big attraction for people attending the events is to actually see via a video feed on the truck their documents actually being destroyed. “People put their documents in a bin and they watch them being shredded,” says Lynch of the Community Service Office. “They don’t leave until it’s been shredded. We allow them to view it. It’s one of the big draws for us.”

“A lot of folks don’t know what to do with their documents and they don’t see the option of shredding it themselves as an efficient one,” Klebanoff adds. “So a lot of folks are just . . . excited and appreciative of being able to come by without being charged a fee.”

Colorado Sees Self at High Risk for E-Security Breaches

Denver, CO-According to infosecurity-us.com, Colorado’s state auditor has conducted a covert penetration test to identify serious vulnerabilities “in the state’s networks and applications that would likely provide a

malicious attacker with unauthorized access to the public’s data or with the ability to directly target Colorado’s citizens.” The auditor gained unauthorized access to thousands of individuals’ records and estimated that a data breach of this scope would cost the state of Colorado between $7 million and $15 million to recover from. The department also found that 60% of state agencies failed to send required security information plans to the Office of Cyber Security by a deadline, including the Office on Higher Education.

Sony and Metech Partner to Help Make Consumer Recycling Easier

Worcester, MA-Webwire.com reports that Metech Recycling is partnering with Sony Electronics on its national Take Back Recycling Program to make it as easy to recycle Sony products as it is to purchase them. Sony

will cover the cost of recycling up to five Sony-branded consumer electronics per customer, per day, at Metech Recycling facilities, and the firm will have seven new drop-off sites in California, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. Sony hopes to collect one pound of electronics for every pound it produces. Metech Recycling is ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 certified and meets the highest standards for electronics recycling, so products are hand disassembled and materials are sorted, processed and reintroduced to the manufacturing process as raw materials. Metech Recycling guarantees they will not landfill or export hazardous electronics waste material, and all hard drives are shredded, ensuring data security.www.electronicsrecyclingexpo.com [email protected]

New Jersey Follows PA Lead in E-Waste Recycling

Trenton, NJ-New Jersey has added itself to the roster of 24 states that have an electronic recycling e-waste mandate, reports newsworks.org. Its voluntary program has led to the recycling of 12 million pounds

of e-waste yearly, but the state hopes the mandate increases that to 50 million annually. The law’s Assembly sponsor, Reed Gusciora, hoped to cut down on landfill waste at no cost to taxpayers, as manufacturers pay for recycling costs and provide disposal centers if they want to sell the items in New Jersey. There is no fine for not recycling, but e-products will not be removed from curbsides. Pennsylvania will begin recycling e-waste in about two years.

Illinois County Steps Up Electronic Recycling Efforts With New Law

Kane Co., IL-Kane County’s electronics recycling program went flat for the first time in 2010 after eight years of growth, but now new changes in the law could see recycling rates jump 400% next year, reports

dailyherald.com. The first year, 625 cars visited the county’s electronics recycling drop-off station, but a decade later saw 9,943 cars drop off over a million pounds of electronics, or 18% of households. But next January begins a new law making it illegal for old electronic equipment to end up in landfills, and the county expects that amount to quadruple next year. Manufacturers will have recycling targets to hit on their sold goods based on sales volume and state recycling goals, with manufacturers turning to local recyclers to contract with collectors like Kane County.

The county will save money because manufacturers will pay some of the costs of the process. But increased demand will also mean opening more centers to drop off electronics. Kane County thinks at least six more drop-off locations are needed.

School Records Under Attack in Ohio, Hawaii

Columbus, OH-Ohio State University has begun notifying 760,000 former and current students, faculty, staff members and applicants about news that a “university computer server was illegally accessed by unauthorized

individuals”, reports spectrum.eee.org. It does not think any information was taken, but the school is offering 12 months free credit protection services to those involved.

Unauthorized individuals logged into an OSU server that housed personal information for the above, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and addresses. No OSU Medical Center medical records were involved. Forensics showed no one’s information was taken, though there was evidence that a cyber attack was planned.

Colleges are being attacked by these individuals, and the University of Hawaii has hired Cedric Bennett, formerly of Information Security Services at Stanford University, to evaluate and recommend improvements to the university’s information security practices, as more than a quarter million U of H confidential records have been exposed since 2005.

NAID Announces Results of First CSDS Accreditation Exams

The National Association for Information Destruction (NAID), recently announced that 23 industry professionals have successfully emerged from the first round of examinations for the association’s new accreditation.

In doing so, these individuals will be among the first to achieve the Certified Secure Destruction Specialist (CSDS) designation.

According to NAID CEO Bob Johnson, “Becoming a CSDS is a major achievement. Passing the examination requires an in-depth understanding of the secure destruction industry, including data protection legislation, secure destruction operations, physical security, records management, risk management, ethics, and NAID Certification.” Johnson adds, “While there are some industry professionals who have a grasp of one or another of these areas, it is a remarkable accomplishment to demonstrate expertise in all of them.”

NAID created the CSDS accreditation to promote and acknowledge a comprehensive understanding of the broad range of disciplines related to secure destruction. The examination itself consisted of 230 questions from 7 separate areas. All of the CSDS applicants participated in the 10-week CSDS webinar series held last fall.

Effective immediately, the following individuals may rightfully display the CSDS designation and will be so acknowledged on the NAID website:

Indiana Passes New E-Recycling Laws

Indianapolis, IN-This January, residents of Indiana must now recycle electronic devices at designated sites, rather than the older voluntary method, reports wave3.com. Warren Nash, Director of Floyd County Solid Waste

Management District, says that recycling is important “not only with electronic recycling, but all recycling.” Recycling sites ask consumers to clean off hard drives of computers for security’s sake. There are no penalties for throwing away electronics.

Candice Barksdale, CEO of Goodwill Bridgepoint in Clarksville, IN, notes that stores like hers offer an alternative to trashing computers and TVs and take the items free of charge for resale or recycling.

E-waste Problem Grows in India

Delhi, India -Electronic waste is on the rise with the growth of cell phones, TVs, printers and other equipment, resulting in about

400,000 metric tonnes of e-waste domestically yearly, according to a recent report by the Center for Science and Environment, with another 50,000 tonnes imported. Another study by Greenpeace foresees 1,600,000 tonnes annually. The traditional recycler is the ragpicker who collects, discards and pulls out valuable parts and burns circuit boards for recovering metals, contaminating the workers and environment.

According to expresscomputeronline.com, E-waste is being dumped in India by developed nations that let NGOs and educational institutions import donated used devices. As technology makes older equipment obsolete quickly, this can be a big problem. An organized effort to create a safe and efficient e-waste recycling industry is being mounted by about 20 licensed recycling companies with limited technology, such as Eco Recycling and Attero Recycling. E-waste recycling offers excellent ROI from money made in recycling components but a recycling company makes anywhere between $10-20 per product, plus added income from metal recycling. But these are only recycling small amounts now in proportion to the task, so e-waste is still being primarily recycled by traditional means.

Among the problems to be addressed are awareness of the need for safe recycling, collection systems that widen the reach and development of full service recycling firms that can dismantle and extract all materials, from copper to ferrous and non-ferrous material, in an environmentally safe manner without the health hazards of burning e-waste. A big concern is data security for hard drives. Dealing with security issues for all of these devices requires specialized skills and processes that the traditional sector does not have, as it is the norm for data destruction to be recorded on camera to document thoroughness. Professional e-waste management companies are needed.

In addition, the country must address problems of hazardous materials being included in OEM equipment manufactured there. Also needed are laws that deal with e-waste from home and abroad from developed countries like Australia, Canada and

Korea. The number of e-waste recyclers is rising, but mostly due to lax licensing standards at the Central Pollution Control Board and State Pollution Control Board. In India, e-waste is classified as a separate waste category within its hazardous waste rule, but there are no clear guidelines on the registration of e-waste recyclers, especially full-service recyclers.

In India, there is no entity in charge of the import of e-waste, and the country must find a way to harmonize its law with regulations regarding electrical and electronic equipment. A draft law is being looked at, due to India’s role as a recycler of e-waste for others. The government issued a public notice prohibiting educational and other institutions from importing second-hand devices in 2010, but there is no structure for collection systems or recycling incentives. In the US and Switzerland, manufacturers must buy back e-waste, though US mail back programs in most states are not used. Some US companies use in-person collection sites. More initiatives of that kind are needed in both countries.

But things are getting better in India with some manufacturer input. Lenovo India chooses all its suppliers, including recyclers, refurbishers and disposal vendors, for recycling compliance and has greatly reduced scrap e-waste generation and increased use of post-consumer recycled plastics from both IT and non-IT, as well as offering free collection, recycling and environmentally conscious disposal of Lenovo PCs to consumers and an asset recovery service to business customers. Nokia India started a take-back campaign two years ago with 400 bins across India. Wipro and HCL have online collection systems along with collection centers in 17 and 23 cities respectively. Due to the notification of RoHS directive in Europe, lead, mercury, cadmium, Hexavalent chromium and two forms of BFRs have been phased out of manufacture. However, a few makes backtracked: Dell, Lenovo, Microsoft, LG and Samsung incurring penalty points.

Apart from health hazards, e-waste can also affect socio-economic status for unorganized recyclers. E-waste sounds high tech, but it is ultimately just dangerous garbage, says an industry insider.

Goodwill and Dell Reconnect Add to Collection Site Roster

Businesswire.com reports that Goodwill Industries International and Dell have added 100 Goodwill donation sites to the Dell Reconnect computer recycling program, making it convenient for more than 42 million U.S. households to drop off computers and related accessories for free, responsible

recycling. The new collection sites, located in Delaware, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island, are now among more than 2,200 Dell Reconnect collection sites across the United States and Canada. The new sites are expected to divert approximately 5 million pounds of e-waste from landfills each year.

“Since its inception, the Dell Reconnect program has created hundreds of green jobs for Goodwill employees who manage the recycling program,” said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Dell Reconnect has allowed Goodwill to expand its sustainability policy and eco-assessment practices.”

Launched in 2004 as a partnership between Goodwill and Dell, Dell Reconnect has diverted more than 170 million pounds of e-waste from landfills and created about 250 green jobs. Goodwill employees manage the collection and disassembly of the equipment. Donated equipment meeting the program’s quality criteria is resold, and devices needing repair are either refurbished or broken down into parts to be recycled by Dell partners. The program supports Goodwill’s job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities, those who lack education or job experience, and others facing challenges to finding employment.
