My life as a Sister of St. Agnes spans 80 years of ministering among many cultures in the United States, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Honduras. Sometime after the first sisters volunteered to go to Nicaragua, I also asked to become a missionary there; however, instead of becoming a missionary in a foreign country, I spent more than 20 years teaching in small rural areas, small towns in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana, in schools in Harlem and Bronx, New York, and in an orphanage for Native American children in Michigan. Only much later was my desire to be a foreign missionary in Latin America realized. My first missionary experience happened in 1967. Sister Paulette Shaw, Sister Margaret Rose Vanden Heuvel and I arrived in Boca de los Sapos near Guayaquil, Ecuador. This was one of the poorest missions where the Sisters of St. Agnes have ever worked. My ministry there was varied especially because I was able to drive sisters and catechists to the rural areas to teach and to provide medical care for the poor.
Many times, after driving the sisters to deliver a baby at the home of a woman in labor, I held the lantern while the sister assisted in the birth of the baby. I especially recall the times I drove the sisters to Guayaquil. This meant I had to drive the car as far as the road went, and then onto a barge which would take us to the other side of the river. I will always remember one particular occasion when we took with us a man and his wife who was in labor. While we were on the barge, it was evident the baby would not wait any longer. Sister Paulette moved quickly into action in the back seat of the car. I will never forget the feeling I had when she handed me the baby to hold while she cared for the mother. Is it any wonder we always referred to the barge as “the Baby Barge” after that?
