MANNA OF·FLESH POTS

THE Bible story of the exodusof the children of Israel from

Egypt relates that in the courseof tbeir journey through theWilderness and their march tothe Promised Land, the concourseof Israelites led by Moses werefed with Manna which fell fromthe Heavens to Eath and so provided their necessary sustenance.

After a while, however, theheavenly food became unappetising, probably too insipid, notenough "kick" or "flavour" in it,and the children of Israel "murmured and lusted for tbe fleshpots of Egypt." So Inuch so,that tbey even expressed regretsat baving been liberated fromtheir bO:ldage.

This story: especially whenread in conjunction witb theirreturn to the worship of theGolden Calf, whether acceptedas history or just parable, importsa moral and provides a lesson itwould well profit tbe presentgeneration to (>Onder seriously.

Not only the present gene.ration of Western countries, but ofthe East as well. Not only ofliberated India, but of the Indiansof Soutb Africa wbo are still in"bondage" but profess to desire

freedom.Although every member of the

human family by virtue of hisstatus as Man, possesses and iscapable of exercising some mea·sure of Free-Will (the measurede~nding upon bis evolutionarygrowth) it is not true that all menare born (ree.

Potentially ,';e are free; that is,we may become 50 through ourown effons, but, until we havewon our freedom-earned it-wearc born into tbis world loadedwitb chains of our own forging.

We come, reapers of "the thingswe did; the ~hougbts we had; theself we wove" in past lives-thefreedoms or the limitations of oure.wn making.

Our "present" is. the fruitageof our "past;" our "future" willbe what we :lre now making il.

Characler-the Man as hethinks; feels, wills and aCls-istbe expression of his growth ·to·datt. His circumstances and

THETHE

opporlunities are likewise of hisown deserving.

In the s:Iome way that a navigator is free to alter the course ofhis vessel, so Man is free 10

change his way of life and living.

As a gre.lt teacber observed,"it all depends upon where welook for our gains;" what we 'con

'sider the more desirable; howrefined or coarse arc our appetiles.

Docs Ihe Manna from Heavenor do the Flesh POlS of Egyplappeal the more strongly 10 us?

Similarly shall" we eventuallyfind tbe worship of the GoldrnCalf more satisfying or morereally profilable, than, by theexercise of our will power, adapting our lives to the demands ofthe over-riding Law thar movesto Righteousness? That Law,expressed in a simple sentence,is, Tbe Fatherhood of Goa andtbe Brotherhood nf Mankind. The demands it makes is ourreco!:nilion of it, not merely 10

theory, but in practice. .

In civilised communities everyadult is supposed to k~ow thelaws of the ·bnd. A root veryreasonable requirement seeinghow many and complicated theyfrequently arc. But the ~Law bywhich men may regulate theirlives happily, peacefully and progressively is simple and devoidof any possibility, of misunderstanding. The" Brotherhood"part of it simply means Do untootbers as you would they didunto you. Love thy neighbouras thy self. The Fatherhood ofGod part of it implies that weare all God's children-divinesparks struggling upwards towards self-realisation, towardsunfolding our latent possibilities)'Ihich realisc:d shall make us"like unto the "Father,"

True indeed il is that "He,prayeth besr, who lovelh best"since love· divine - "love &~dcharity immortal-is the spiritualforce that quickens and unfolds

HEAVEN OROF EGYPT?

the best in man and makes him"likesl to God,"

Love unites. Hate sep3ratesand keeps apart. Taught theWisest of the Wise, "there is nogrief like hale," To which Headded, "No pOlins like passion, no'deceit like sense.

Now, just as'a person' whosludies bis health will choosefoods that are health giving andavoid foods that arc barmful buttempting because they tickle Ihepalate, so each of us may exercisehis measure of free-will in thedirecting of'our lives, generally.

We are, all the time, being confronted witb alternatives. Wemay succumb to the temptalionto please'tbe senses; to indulgein appetites that for the timebeing give the sensation of pIta·,sure but eventually ruin, o~r

bealth, or, exercising our willpower, we may resist the templation and make the wiser choice.

If we value health, and all th:lItthe possessio!\, of health confers, more than the passing pleasuresthat indulgence leads, we exercisewhat i, called restraint. Otherwise we succumb-and pay theprice.

Ta take a funher illustration. We may worsbip God or we mayworship Mammon. Each bringsits characteristic and appropriatereward. The wise, the saints, the"Seers of the Essence of Things,"assure us, out of their own ex,perience, that there is no com·parison in the computing ofvalues. The one is permanent, the other elusive and illusive;Dead Sea fruit.

ACId, be it remembered, seers'and saints are not JUSl freaks ofNature. They, too, have had togrow, 10 become. They :l.re godlike only because they chose theway of godliness; because theyrenounced the lower for the higher lh~ lesser for the grealer. th I

unreal for the real.

They cultivated :1 preferencefor the Manna from Heaven inslead of for tbe Fleshpots ofEgypt.

They, of their Own free-WIlland set purpose, chose the waytbat all of us must some timehowever remole-follow to achievethe purp~se of "What did makeus man," the realisarion of ourown essential and potential godliness.

The love we are commandedto cultivate and express is not tbemere sentimentality or the desireso often misnap1ed Lov~ It isthe complementary of Wisdom,of Vision, of Understanding. Itis sometimes, correctly spoken ofas Compassion.

The Hall mark of il is unselfishservice. Loving service renderedwithout thought of reward orself-advancement. Service rendered for tbe sake of tbe oneserved. For God's sake.

Men clamour and war againsteach other for "Rights." Theywould do better to strive afterRighteousness. We re~p onlywhat we sow; Either deliberatelyor carelessly. The law of Causeann Effect operates rbroughourthe Universe. Chance or fortuityarc illusions.

Tlioughtful minds have beenappaIJed at Ibe doctrine of thesios of the fathers being visitedupon the children. And rightlyso If interpreted literally.

Not so, however, if understoodas it was meant to be, that theman (or woman) of one birth orgeneralion is but the chird, lheproduct or creal ion, of th<, selfsame ind vidual of a previousincarnation, who comes reaper ofthe things he (or she) sowed:'

As we COunt time, the Mills ofGod grind slowly, but not onlywondrous small, but very effectively.

We are the Masters of our ow~

Fate. We may make or we maymar; help or hinder; progress orr'errogress; rise or fall.

OUtS Ite choice. None othercompels.

To be called safe an anliseptlc must be safe in several

ways. It mllst be reliable, it must be gentle, it must

be non· poisonous. It m\lst help, not hinder, the

natural processcs of healing :md repair. 'Dettol' thc

modern amiseptic, is a highly cfficient destroyci

of germs, but It works on the germs, not you.

It Is non-poisonous, pleasant, safe to have aroUJld.
