When successful people are asked about what it takes to make it to the top in their particular field, there is one thing that they all focus on. That thing is ‘hard work’. Be it in sports, culture or academic pursuits, working hard and, with that, perseverance seem to be key.

Very few people will be the best in the world at what they do. We cannot measure the success of a person solely because they have reached the ‘top’ of their field. So how could we measure success? As a measure of the success of its students, Darfield High School can look to its mission statement. This sets the target of a leaver being a citizen who has developed the skills, knowledge, wisdom, not just to get a job and be a valuable part of our society, but to contribute and participate.

I recently heard this goal expressed in a very practical way. This person said we have been successful in our mission to educate our students if the leavers meet the following three criteria: if they are a person in who you would want to have as a work colleague; if they are a person you would want as a neighbour and if they a person you would be happy to marry into your family. Work, community and family—wide measures of educational success.

Another common factor that successful people attribute their success to is passion. Passion for what they do. They do it because they enjoy it. They look forward to coming to work every day. A challenge in this, however, is to find out what our passion is. Do I have one? Should I be worried if I don’t?

Michael Fullan, a Canadian education academic, said:

“If you are not sure about what you have a passion for you should continue to build your skills and you will find your passion.”

It is OK not to know yet what your passion is. Keep working hard anyway. Keep learning. Through this learning you will find a spark that sets you off on an exciting new path. Keep learning because you will discover new things and your passions may change.

Mahatma Ghandi is quoted as saying the following (although I think it is an expression of a much older Buddhist philosophy): “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

The first part of this quote, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow,” is about taking your opportunities, like “Carpe diem” —seize the day.

However, when this idea is taken to the extreme, it can easily drift into ideas of living for the moment, not worrying about tomorrow, being totally spontaneous. The problem with this is that to be totally spontaneous means no planning for the future or not thinking about consequences. This seems a very self-centred way to live a life.

This is why I like how the second part of the quote brings it all together, “Learn as if you were to live forever”. This is the idea of lifelong learning. If you keep learning, you will find your passion.

One of the privileges of being a principal and a teacher is that we get the chance to ‘make a difference’ to individuals, to families, to society. Sometimes, in all of the rushing around we do, we lose sight of what a profoundly worthwhile and satisfying feature of our work this is. We get to witness the growth and energy and blossoming of talents as students take their path into adulthood. We get to contribute to this and to share in this. We get to help passions develop. We get to support students in discovering what they are passionate about.

Excerpts from a Senior Prizegiving Speech

During last week, we kicked off the first of our PB4L initiatives focused on students getting to class on time. There were clips to watch, quizzes to participate in and, most importantly, reward tokens to earn.

Teachers and Prefects were on duty each day eager to give out as many of these ‘free and frequent’ rewards as possible. Of course, we students were super keen to earn the rewards…especially once we learnt that they could be exchanged for a range of products in the online DHS PB4L Shop! There are a range of goodies in the shop, including items from the school canteen and stationery, as well as a variety of vouchers. The juniors were mostly keen on the canteen items with Juicies proving the most popular reward collected so far. Stationery items were also popular as all of us students need new pens at this time of year!

The vouchers seemed to be most popular with the seniors, especially the fuel vouchers! Importantly, students did seem to be getting to class in a more timely manner (along with their teachers), while having a lot of fun along the way. We can’t wait for the next initiative so that we can earn more respect tokens to cash in at the shop!

The Malvern Lions Scholarship is for students intending to study full time for a recognised qualification. The all-round aspects of each applicant are considered. This year, the scholarship has been awarded to Kate Meder.

The Malvern Health Trust works in the Malvern Community to provide the community nurses and also supports a number of local health initiatives. The Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust Scholarship is for students who intend to study in health related areas. This year the trust decided to award two scholarships. These have been awarded to Courtney Hughes and Alben Thomas.

The 24/7 Scholarship, presented by Sam Broughton, 24/7 Youth Worker Manager, has been awarded to the Senior Student who has contributed greatly to the junior school. This scholarship is for a voyage on the ‘Spirit of Adventure’ and has been awarded to Amanda Schnell.

Elizabeth Richards was a well-known local farmer who left a significant endowment to support students from Darfield High School to study agriculture at Lincoln University. Students can reapply annually and potentially can be supported throughout their study. The Elizabeth Richards Scholarship, presented by Mr Tony Whatman, a trustee of the fund, goes to ex-students, Vanessa Bragan, Caitlin Brooks, Grace Clouston, Sarah McMillan, Jonas Meyer, Claudia Thomas, Stephanie Williams, Bella Wright, and Lucy Wright. 2015 Elizabeth Richards Scholarships for current students have been awarded to Tori Maxted and Aaron Watson.

Kevin Hickman is an ex-student of Darfield High School. He is responsible for building one of New Zealand’s largest companies, Ryman Healthcare. The Hickman Family Trust support an annual scholarship, to be shared as the selection panel recommend, to support tertiary fees for a student or students who will study courses of benefit to NZ. This year, students chosen for this award are Penny Clyne-Moffat, Bruno Deans, Kate Jenkins, Isobel Nash and Erika Pander.

Scholarships

Darfield High School students continue to have their achievements recognised nationally with scholarships from New Zealand Universities. These scholarships are awarded independently by the universities from applicants from all over the country.

The University of Canterbury Emerging Leaders Scholarship recognises high academic achievement, as well as leadership potential and sporting, cultural and community involvement. This $5000 scholarship has been awarded to Kate Meder.

The Massey University Vice Chancellor’s High Achievement Scholarship (Academic) recognises high academic achievement. This $3,000 scholarship has been awarded to Marie Potthoff.

The Massey University Vice Chancellor’s High Achievement Scholarship (Arts) recognises high academic achievement. This $3,000 scholarship has been awarded to Isobel Nash.

Each year, students may apply for a range of scholarships, available exclusively to Darfield High School students. This year the value of the total pool of scholarships is around $58, 000. The selection panels for these scholarships commented on the huge challenge of choosing only a few scholarship recipients from such a wide range of talented students.

Frews Sponsorship assists a student to gain a heavy trade licence and, this year, the award has been made to Cameron Johnson.

The Selwyn District Council Education Fund Bursary is to assist a student in meeting their fees in their first year of tertiary study and, this year, the award has been made to Anna Watson.

The Orion Selwyn District Centenary Scholarship looks for students who intend to follow a course of study that benefits the wider community, and considers their determination and wider contribution to the school. This year, the scholarship has been awarded to Danielle Barnhill.

The Lions are active in our local, national and international communities, fundraising and supporting a wide range of projects.

It has become the tradition at Senior Prizegiving for the House Leaders to pass over the House Books to the new leaders announced for the following year. Being voted in by fellow students to be at the helm of their House carries much responsibility and good spirit as competition for the House Cup is very strong.

A big moment at Prize Giving, and Mr Adams made us wait…a collective groan went up when he said the announcement of the House Cup winners would be after the video of event highlights from throughout the year. However, Tawera it was that took out the title and well-deserved, having led right at the start of the year and by a strong crew of Chevvy Roberts and Holly McLauchlan. There was never any doubt which House they belonged to; Chevvy leading the House chant was a driving force for the whole red team. Holly provided much amusement with her squeals of delight. Well done, Tawera!

Year 10 PrefectsNow that the seniors have left school to study and attend their exams, Mr Adams and Mr Bell have interviewed and selected a group of Year 10 students to step into the Prefect roles. These students are required to be both role models and maintain high expectations of behaviour, as well as perform grounds and village duties. On Thursday 30 October, I had the pleasure of being present at the Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) and Youth Guarantee (YG) Career based training Showcase and Celebration for 2014. The Celebration was held at CPIT in the Campus Marae, Te Puna Wanaka.

This was an opportunity to showcase, celebrate and share the success of the hard work and achievements the 2014 students had gained over the year. Family, Whanau and Schools were invited to join in the celebrations.

The students who spoke of their experiences and tutors reflecting on the year spoke highly, of how these courses had benefited the youth who were fortunate enough to be on a course. It was evident from the speeches that personal growth had been a key result for many who had attended and completed the courses, along with next

steps of enrolling in another course for further study.

Five of our Darfield students took the opportunity to attend the event. It was great to see them there and to have a chat with them about what they had been doing during the year. A very delicious afternoon tea was provided and displays from the different courses decorated the room.

Thanks to our boys who attended: you have done your school proud and represented us well!

Tabloid SportsThe weather report was iffy, with rain and southerlies on the cards, but on the bell at 1.00 pm on Tabloid Day, blue skies and hot sun greeted students as they all rushed out to the field, ready to compete. Red, green, blue and yellow—this is the day when it is all about House pride and being able to showcase your colours.

Fun and quirky sports featured: bike riding, but the slowest and last wins, Slip ‘n’ Slide, dress up and get over the hay bales and back, fill tubs with holey buckets, hauling tyres, sack races, gumboot throwing, water balloons and indeed—lots of water everywhere. Staff had control of the hoses and the local

firemen (Station Officer Ken Muscroft-Taylor and Firefighter Stephan Williams) made sure students kept cool and tanks of water were kept full.

Parents turned up to support and cheer for their students and the day got even hotter. Points were being tallied up in the background as the afternoon wore on and the fire siren marked the end of one round and the start of another.

Soon it was all over but for the Tug o’ War: the big finale with House against House and students against teachers. Everyone yelled (or screamed) for their House teams and then it was over for another year.

Welcome to Kagoshima Girls’ High


Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting 23 girls from Kagoshima Girls’ High School in Japan, plus their teachers, Alistair Turley and Yumiko Ninomiya. Groups have been coming to Darfield to experience school life for the past seven years. Both teachers have been to the school a couple of times before, but it was a new experience for the girls.

They had a full programme spread over 11 days—spending time in class with buddies, visiting the Antarctic Centre, shopping, a day trip to Akaroa, a harbour cruise, jetboating with the Rubicon team, a Willowbank Education programme, and then a hangi one evening here at school.

Hiria and her husband laid the hangi in the morning and, when the group returned from a day out, it was lifted and the girls enjoyed the hot food.

The Year 7s have been working on a neat project in their Textile classes. Continuing with their Moroccan-inspired theme, they have been stencilling calico with fabric paints in an array of bright colours and designs.

Getting the amount of paint, colour and application just so, takes some trialling to get the technique right. Once the mysteries of machine-neatened seams are navigated, the students will sew calico into small bags.

Emma and Ellen sat the Grade 5 Theory exam and both passed with Distinction.

The String Group played at the Red Cross Garden Party held in Greendale during the weekend. It was a lovely warm afternoon playing under some trees in a beautiful garden and the group was well received by everyone there.

I was very proud of the girls. Cecilia Pascoe, Adele Davidson, Guy de Lacey and Pauline Sewell would like to congratulate our pupils.

This year, we are again providing bagged lunches for the Courtenay A & P Show in Kirwee. This is our largest fundraising project for the year, which is why we are asking for your help.

We appreciate that everyone’s time and resources are valuable, but as the funds raised go back into the school, we ask if each family can assist by donating home baking, grocery items or a small donation (to cover our expenses for packaging the lunches). All home baking is greatly appreciated. In addition to the baking we require grocery items, as listed below.

Malvern Enviro group needs a logo! We are in need of the creative talents of a local artist / designer like you! Let’s see if you

can help us out with a creative logo design. Open to all ages (prizes for primary, secondary and adult categories).

The key things are that it should make people think of the local culture / environment and contain things that the artist (you!) think are important about Malvern and/or about the

environment. The winning logo may well be used as a basis for our actual logo design. Tip: Keep your design simple so it can be easily recognised from a distance..

The design can be with or without the "Malvern Enviro" text. Colour or black and white are fine.

There will be a 50 dollar prize voucher for the winner (sponsored by Fonterra) so get your pencils sharpened and your paint brushes dusted off!
