Introduction

Background information about the Project

The Clients are the Project Sponsors and will project manage the refurbishment of their small and tired kitchen

in their unit. It needs to be completely refurbished, removing the existing kitchen and refitting a contemporary

kitchen including appliances. The project team comprises themselves as project sponsors and project

managers.

Due to budget limitations the clients have nominated to conduct as much of the work as possible to reduce

costs. Although some of this work will be completed by themselves it will be necessary to record certain items in

the WBS to ensure milestones are met and the schedule of work will not be affected.

Scope Management

Scope Definition

The scope of the plan covers the following aspects:

To renovate the kitchen within the existing structure of the unit in a period of two weeks, to be delivered by 10

October 2010, at a cost of no greater than $15,000. This includes the design, preparation and installation to

Australian Standards and ergonomically designed for the clients use.

Defining work required within the project scope but to be carried out by clients.

For the project to be completed by 10 October 2010, within budget of $15,000 and to Australian Standards.

Objectives & Success Criteria:

From this plan the key objectives and measures of success are to:

Produce a comprehensive WBS which will be a success when it enables owners to identify tasks that

they are able to complete themselves and reduce labour costs to keep within budget.

To be ergonomically fitted to clients requirements so that all appliances are fitted to the correct

working height and location for the owners including the height of the bench tops.

Cupboards are fitted and with enough space to cater for everything that is currently in the existing

kitchen cupboards plus the dinner and set and glassware currently stored in the garage .That the

doors are able to be open without causing obstruction.

Counter tops are fitted with a material that is heat resistant and can be used as a chopping board

without damage to surface.

Flooring made from a durable material that is washable and suitable for wet areas.

All appliances to be brand new with a minimum of 2 years warranty.

For the kitchen to function in working order with all appliances to be in working order by handover

date and to Australian Standards.

The budget of $15,000 is not exceeded

Is ready for handover by 10 October.

Requirements

There is an alternative cooking arrangement considered.

Strata approval

All contractors have the relevant qualifications, including W/C and public liability.

Limitations & Constraints

List of all known constrains to the renovation:

Hot water heater to remain in same place to reduce cost of refitting.

Must be fitted within current floor space.

Must not exceed budget of $15,000

Must be ready by 10 October

Assumptions& Risk Analysis

The following assumptions, coupled with the risk analysis findings, define the boundaries around the planning

process. These assumptions will be refined, deleted, or new assumptions added as planning progresses.

Comment [R3]: Good, SMART objectives.

Comment [R4]: This should be in scope also as it affects your timeline, costs etc

Comment [R5]: A good list of constraints

KKKiiitttccchhheeennn RRReeennnooovvvaaatttiiiooonnn

Assumptions

All planning to be completed by 20 September to allow time for installation

Any work to be done by clients will be completed to time schedule

Work schedule is 6 day working week

7am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday

9am- 1pm Saturday

Strata approval

Appliances in stock & delivered to schedule

Client will be without cook top for four days and can utilise old microwave as alternative cooking

arrangement

Hot water tank can remain on

Risk analysis

Contingency time has been allocated in the event that the clients are unable to complete their work

activities listed in WBS in the planning stage to ensure all preparation is completed before the start of

the next phase.

If clients are in danger of not meeting milestones in the preparation phase they will enlist family and

friends to meet milestones.

If appliances are not readily available a list of secondary retailers is available for use.

Outstanding Issues

Identify which tasks will be completed by owners on WBS

Alternative cooking arrangements are suitable for owners

Dependencies

Contractors completing previous job on time

Clients able to get annual leave to assist in renovation

Project Approach

The proposed project methodology consists of four separate phases, as described below:

Phase 1 -Planning

Phase 2 - Preparation

Phase 3 - Installation

Phase 4 – Completion

WBS Dictionary

Fixtures & Fittings means the taps required for the sink unit, handles for all doors and drawers, new covers for electrical points and light. Electrical Appliances means, microwave, cook top, range hood, oven, dishwasher, front loading

washing machine and fridge.

Change Control Process

Due to the owners being the project managers it was necessary to include a step into the change

process whereby a subject matter expert would be consulted before clients proceeded to analyse any

change in cost, resources etc.

This would ensure that any changes requested by the clients themselves would be analysed by the

appropriate contractor working on the project to ensure subject matter advice was provided as to

feasibility of the change. This has been included in the change request form to ensure all parties are

aware.

If there were no valid objections from contractors then clients would analyse the cost, time and

resources impact of the change.

Comment [R10]: Accurate WBS – in graphical for would have been better but all the information is here.

Comment [R11]: A good approach.

Comment [R12]: This is a good start but for each step you should cover: What is being done, who is doing it and when.
