Often the school ignores thateach child is an individual…

Children,move toyourplacesnow.

Child-friendliness and inclusiveness– its attitudinal dimension

Very oftenwe wantchildren tosit in aregimentedway andlisten to

themonologuesof ateacher

Child-friendliness andinclusiveness– its attitudinal dimension

But children do not learnonly like this!

Let us look at Child-friendliness and inclusiveness– its physical dimension

Children learn in large groups

Inclusion createsmutual respect, understanding ofdivergent viewsand tolerance

amongst thechildren

Children learn in small peer groups Children contemplate while alone…

So why don’t we give themvariety of learning situations

in our school environments?

Children actually learnall the time.

We can give them variety

And yet not be child friendly!!

What is child friendly ?

To come to the scale of a child2

It is not socomplicated

to bechildfriendly.

We,the planners,

 just need tocoordinateproperly.

Just

make various provisions

accessible, usable

and simple

to be used by ALL children.

More on child friendliness…

The amenities…

When no two children are of sameheight, why the taps need to be at

the same height?

EducationPlanners

(CRCC,BRCC,DPC)

School has many players, but it is a single entity

It is important to have convergence of ideas, resources andefforts to achieve that unified vision, at school level

(Secy Edu,SPD)

Despite multipleplayers, it is

important to haveone unified vision

of the school

The question is,who has that

vision?

Child friendly and Inclusive

Whole School Planning

• Address the goals of SSA

Whole School Planning

Guiding Principles for whole school planning

• Unified vision of school

• Address norms for school planning

• Using correct data

• Child as an important stakeholder in the

planning process• Improve the present, and plan for future

Whole School Planning

Guiding Principles for whole school planning

• Integration of multiple planning inputs

• Ownership of whole school planning bythe school community

• Simplified documentation

Whole School Planning

How to go about whole school planning?

• Involve stakeholders in various components

of the process

 – Education Planners (DPC, BRC, CRC)

 – SSA Engineer for physical planning

 – School Community (Children, HM, teachers, parents, VEC)

Education Planners and School Community Community articulating aspirations through building models

Participation of community members at planning stage Understanding technical aspects in an interactive way

Demystify technology and demonstrate holistic planning

Involving stakeholders through interactive models

Whole School Planning

Let the community understand basic principles of planning through simpledismantlable models for them to realise the significance of holistic planning.

• Map the existing school : School Mapping

Whole School Planning

How to go about whole school planning?

 – Existing Catchment, student teacher strength

 – Existing classes (strength, gender-wise data,CWSN, etc.)

 – Audit of existing facilities from child friendliness andinclusiveness

 – Linkage with other facilities

 – Assessment of existing facilities for their adequacy in

addressing SSA goals – Condition of existing facilities

Page 8: SSA Friendly

• Map the future : Ascertaining future growth prospects

Whole School Planning

How to go about whole school planning?

 – Growth in 6-14 year age-group population in lastcensus

 – General trend of population growth in area

• Mapping school facilities and their condition against

norms

 – Ascertaining application of SSA norm for Upper primary /primary based on 1:2 criteria

 – Ascertaining if the school will be ‘Hub’ or ‘Feeder’school?

• Share all above data in simple form with stakeholders

Whole School Planning

How to go about whole school planning?

• Identify what improvement do present facilities need

for

 – Better utilization of existing resource – Added features to cater to present requirements.

Expanded from

‘with-in’ andmodified for multigrade

teaching-

learning

Twonarrow

classrooms

Creating alternative teaching-learning spacesother than the ‘class-room’ at very low cost

in existing schools

A school expanded under relief scheme with one added room inan unplanned way.

Joining the disjointed rooms witha meaningful space in betweenfor learning.

A school lying on thenatural site drainage.

Providing a plinth protectionand expanding it to create alearning space.

Multiple utility of repair and maintenance exercise

Plan for improvement in present school

Enhancing basic provisions • Planning for future needs

Whole School Planning

How to go about whole school planning?

 – Which known needs are to be catered in future?

 – Emergent trends in education for future.

 – What kind of future expansion of facilities isneeded?

 – Solutions to cater these needs

• Planning for systems of maintenance

Plan holistically

Plan for future needs

Use repair and maintenance exercise as an opportunity to also holisticallyplan the school spaces for better utility – for present and future needs.

Whole School Planning

Plan for future needs, today

Make the School vision document

• Synthesis and Integration of present and future

needs to form a holistic vision of school

Whole School Planning

How to go about whole school planning?

 – Compare above with norms

 – Share above data with stakeholders

 – Plan for improvement in present school and future needs

• Synthesize and integrate to make School Vision

document with stakeholders. Ensure its ownership

• Devise a system that these become key referral

document for any development activity in school
