FRENZIED FIFTH FINISHES CARDS: Lorenzo Quintana’s lead-off home run in the fifth sparked a six-run frame as the Hooks cruised to a 9-3 triumph over Springfield in Friday night’s series opener at Whataburger Field. Quintana, who cracked a two-out RBI single in the second, belted the first pitch from Anthony Shew in the fifth over the left-field wall for his third home run of the year. The dinger was the first of seven consecutive hits in the inning. Stephen Wrenn, Josh Rojas, Taylor Jones, Carmen Benedetti, and Alex De Goti each collected an RBI single. Also in the hit parade, was a De Goti double.

Ryan Hartman spread three runs, six hits, and one walk over seven innings for his third consecutive win. ON THE OFFENSIVE: The Hooks cracked 8 hits, 7 of those notched consecutively, in their 6-run 5th inning last night. It marks the most knocks by Corpus Christi in a single frame this year. With their 9-3 win Monday night, the Hooks have now scored 8 runs or more in 36% (16 of 45) of their games in 2018. Corpus Christi enters play this evening with a .295 team batting aver-age which ranks 3rd in the Minor Leagues. Fresno, the Astros’ triple-A affiliate, is hitting .299 on the season. Albuquerque, also of the Pacific Coast League, ranks 2nd at .297. The Hooks also set the Texas League standard in runs (257, 5.7 per game), hits (464, (10.3), doubles (93), RBIs (240), walks (167), steals (73), and on-base average (.369). WHERE THE WINS ARE: The Hooks, who own the best home record in the Texas League at 17-6 (.739), have now won 7 consecutive games at Whataburger Field. The most consecutive home triumphs in club history is 9, achieved June 7-30, 2012. The 2018 Hooks are hitting .286 while averaging 5.7 runs at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi boasts a 3.03 home ERA. STREAKING: Last night, IF Randy Cesar extended his hit streak to a Texas League best 15 games. Cesar, hitting .382 with a 422 on-base percentage during this surge, is tied with Jose Altuve for the 9th-longest hit streak in club history. Jorge Cortes owns the Hooks record for longest hit streak, hitting safely in 27 games from June 1 thru July 2 during the 2006 Texas League championship season. Drew Ferguson ranks 2nd with a 23-gamer authored last year (April 29-May 26). MEN OF STEAL: The Hooks matched their season-best with 4 stolen bases last night, and now lead the Minors with 73 thefts. Corpus Christi is on pace for 227 steals this year, which would shatter the club’s single-season record of 170 (2014). TOP GUNS: IF Randy Cesar and LHP Cionel Perez are the Texas League Player & Pitcher of the Week for May 14-20, league president Tim Purpura announced Monday. Cesar went 12-for-30 (.400) with five runs, one double, two home runs, and 11 RBIs this past week. The 23-year-old out of Santo Domingo, DR, currently ranks 4th in the Texas League with a .336 batting average, and his 29 RBIs are tied for 5th. Cesar, batting .478 off lefties, has hit safely in 25 of his last 27 contests. Perez is the first Texas Leaguer to win the Pitcher of the Week award twice in 2018. He also earned the honor for the period April 16-22. Perez notched two triumphs this past week. The Cuban southpaw struck out six and retired 11 of the 12 men he faced May 15 vs. San Antonio. Perez held Frisco two solo homers over 5 1/3 innings Sunday afternoon. For the week, he struck out 14 against three hits and two walks in 9 1/3 frames. Perez is now 4-1 with a 1.87 ERA and .213 opponent batting average in eight appearances (6 starts) this season. The 22-year-old is averaging 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings pitched and 2.84 Ks per free pass. MEET ANIBAL: IF Anibal Sierra is 3-for-12 with 3 runs scored and 1 double in his 3-game Double-tenure. Sierra hit .245 with 7 doubles, 4 home runs, 14 RBIs and 2 steals in 35 games for Buies Creek to start the season. A native of Santiago de Cuba, Sierra was signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in July 2016. The 24-year-old batted .201 with 6 home runs and 34 RBIs in 113 games between Buies Creek and Quad Cities last season. Sierra batted .238 in 93 games over 3 seasons for the Avispas (Wasps) de Santiago de Cuba of Cuba’s Serie Nacional from 2012-15. The Hooks now have 6 players on it’s current roster who hail from Cuba.
