DESCRIPTION OF COURSES NOT IN THE 2016-17 ACADEMIC CATALOG

*Includes Revised Course Descriptions*

ATH-105 Special Topics in Theater. Girard, D. This course is an exploration of musical theatre in a studio workshop setting.

The coursework is designed to provide the student with training in singing, acting and performance techniques using musical

theatre literature research and material. There will be an emphasis on the coordination of dialogue, melody, lyric, staging and

choreography. Since this is a workshop course, students will prepare material for class presentation and critique including a final

performance.

AMU-202 Musical Thinking: World and Pop. Olsen, T. This course will examine music traditions outside the canon of Western

classical music, including American folk, jazz and popular musics as well as traditional and popular musics from around the

world. In order to better understand the theory and practice of these musics, students will pursue topics including the dichotomy

between oral tradition and written notation; various ways of organizing pitch, rhythm, and meter; and the process of transcription.

Prerequisite: AMU-100 or AMU-101 or permission of the instructor.

BIO-310 Human Evolution. Yukilevich, R. This discussion-based class will explore the evolution of our own species, Homo

sapiens. The class will be focus on reading and discussing primary literature material and will be divided into four major topics:

1) Reading historical biological literature on understanding human evolution starting with C. Darwin’s Decent of Man; 2)

Hominid fossil record leading up to modern humans; 3) Using human population genetics and genomics to understand recent

evolutionary history and our relationship to other hominids; 4) Human phenotypic adaptations and their relationship to climatic,

geographical, social and other environmental variation. Students will be required to read and present on the latest primary

literature for each topic. Prerequisites: BIO-110 & BIO-112.

BIO-331 Environmental Physiology. Rice, S.K. Organisms carry out diverse activities across a vast range of environmental

conditions, from persisting in the scorching sun and high temperatures of temperate deserts to swimming in bays in the

Antarctic. Within this range, diverse plant and animal groups with different genetic histories have evolved to function and

flourish within the physical and chemical constraints imposed by their internal and external environments. In this course, students

will explore the nature of such constraints and seek to understand how physiological traits in plants and in different animal groups

have evolved to function within them. Topics include mechanics of support, light sensing and capture, internal flows in transport

and the mechanics of movement, swimming and flight. Prerequisites: BIO-225; PHY 110/120 or knowledge of high school

physics recommended.

CLS-138 Introduction to Roman Archeology. Commito, A. This course introduces students to the archaeology of the ancient

Roman world. We explore major themes in the study of that world, such as urbanism, the economy, identity, and religion, by

examining the main categories of archaeological evidence for the reconstruction of Roman society. Along the way, we investigate

material culture through the eyes of multiple groups of people – slaves, poets, farmers, soldiers, aristocrats, emperors, and more –

and discuss recent developments in archaeological research methods.

CLS-202 Introduction to Archeological Field Methods. Commito, A. Believe it or not, there is more to archaeology than

raiding tombs and cracking a bullwhip. In this course students explore what archaeology is really like, from project design to the

nitty-gritty particulars of fieldwork and those “ah-ha!” moments of discovery. The course is designed to introduce students to the

basics of archaeological field methods through a combination of readings and hands-on experience, and to explore the history of

our Union College community. What can we learn about people in the past through physical remains? What does learning about

the past teach us about ourselves? What else do archaeologists do besides dig? What happens to the artifacts we discover? Who

owns them, and where do they go? How are ancient objects used to shape cultural identity and global politics today? To address

these and other questions, we examine archaeological research from around the world, with a special emphasis on the ancient

Greek and Roman Mediterranean. Students use their new skills in interpreting material culture to analyze the physical world

around them in new and surprising ways.

ECE 481 Special Topics in Electrical and Computer Engineering: The Internet of Things. ECE STAFF. A survey of the

technology and applications behind the Internet of Things (IoT) theme, where more and more physical objects are accessible via

the Internet. The course will be team taught and will include an overview of the technologies in use and a variety of application

case studies. Prerequisites: Any CSC 100-level (CSC-103-109) and ECE-118.

ECO-356 Seminar in Health Economics. Gao, J. This course is designed to familiarize students with the research literature in

health economics, and a theoretical and empirical “tool kit” that enable students to ask and answer questions as a health

economist. We will cover a variety of topics concerning healthcare expenditures, Medicaid and Medicare, healthcare system

worldwide, risky health behavior, healthcare reforms, hospitals and pharmaceutical industry. Students will select interesting topics

in this field and write a research paper. By the end of the term, students will be acquainted with a broad mix of institutional

knowledge, theoretical literature, and empirical studies. Prerequisites: ECO-241 and ECO-243.

EGL-282 “Uncanny Texts”: Literature and Psychoanalysis. Mitchell, J. The uncanny describes not so much a literary theme or

movement as an aesthetic quality that provokes eerie, strange, creepy, unsettling, haunting, or disturbing feelings. It is one of

Sigmund Freud's most significant contributions to literary and cultural theory. By interrogating literary, cultural, and

psychoanalytical texts, this course examines the relationship between literature and psychoanalysis; the two have been in close

conversation since the early theoretical developments that began to define psychoanalysis. From Freud’s use of Hamlet and "The

Sandman" as key cornerstones of his own theories to the way that J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone illustrates

Jacques Lacan’s notion of the Mirror Stage, literature and psychoanalysis have been intimate bedfellows. During our term, we will

look at theoretical writings by Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, and others in conjunction with transhistorical literary and cultural

texts, examining specific psychoanalytical concepts like the uncanny, the unconscious, desire, sublimation, the death drive, the

primal horde, infantile sexuality, and mourning and melancholia. Prerequisite is any EGL course level-100 or above.

FRN-313 Travel Literature in French. Mouflard, C. From Montesquieu's Lettres Persanes to Tintin's adventures on the moon.

This course explores the concept of travelling in all its forms: the thirst tor adventure in a foreign land. The forced voyage of exile

and immigration. The mere capacity to move beyond one's comfort zone. and even time travel All voyages involve a search and an

encounter. Either with others or with oneself. In this course you will study a wide variety of texts (Montesquieu. Camus. Ben

Jelloun). Cartoons (Tintin). and films (Les lntouchables. Chocolat) by French and Francophone artists that will give you insight

into the cultural differences and particularities that are unveiled through the theme of travelling. You will accomplish your own

voyage. Document 11 through both traditional and technological medium. And share it with those you will meet along the way.

Prerequisites are any of the following: FRN-201 or any 300-level French course.

GEO-107 Dinosaurs: Evolution and Extinction. S. Dosiek. This course will be exploring the evolution, extinction, and natural

history of our planet all by studying one of the most fascinating groups of animals of all time – the dinosaurs! We won’t be

memorizing names and facts of dinosaur species, but rather exploring the group as a whole to answer questions like: Did all

dinosaurs have feathers? Were they warm blooded? Did they travel in herds? Did they look after their young? The course will

acquaint you with dinosaurs and the world they lived in – the Mesozoic. We will discuss their evolution and ecology, their

extinction, and the dinosaurs of today (birds are dinosaurs!). You can expect to expand your knowledge of geology, the scientific

process, natural history, evolutionary relationships, and critical analysis.

HST-100 First-Yr Sem: Nuclear History. Walker, M. A seminar for first-year students studying how nuclear science, weapons,

and energy have influenced politics, society and culture, beginning early in the twentieth century and continuing to the present.

ISC-200 Writing in Theory and Practice. Johnson, J. An intensive workshop, discussion group, and strategy session, this course

is an opportunity to reflect upon our life as writers, and enhance our ability to talk with others about their writing. We will

study the role of writing within the academy, and we’ll pay special attention to the intellectual “life” of writing here at Union,

from the founding of the college in 1795 to the present. We will think deeply about how we write and why — and we’ll explore

the long-standing relationship between liberal arts education and the teaching and learning of writing. Students in this course will

learn about the writing process from invention to revision, and we’ll spend significant time sharing our writing and writing

practices. Of course we will read a sample of great writing — some works more experimental than others — along the way. ISC-201 Hybrid Genre Critical Making: A Course for Writers, Critics, Performing Artists, Makers and Activists. Wilt, Y.

A workshop-styled class modeled on the traditional MFA creative writing format and the postgraduate critical theory structure,

this offering will prepare participants for both graduate school and the professional landscape. Participants will engage in

rigorous writing exercise and will conduct close readings of seminal critical texts. This course requires all participants to dedicate

at least 1.5 hours a week outside of the classroom to individual and collaborative work and thus should be undertaken only both

those who have garnered a strong foundation in writing, film-making or performance. Participants will be divided into four core

groups and will be expected to produce either a fully-developed short play, film or hybrid-genre live performance. Participants

can expect to give and receive clear, constructive critical support. Special Note: Please send a sample of creative work in for

preview before the first day of class so that Dr. Wilt can group class participants accordingly.

ISC-210 Innovation, Creativity, and the Entreprenurial Mindset. Cotter, S., Fried, H., & Nelson, E. This course provides

students with an unconventional, comprehensive, applicable, and memorable experience that can be translated to each of their

lives. It is an activity and speaker based course that allows students to benefit from both styles of teaching. Students learn core

topics, hear from external speakers who have relevant experience, and solidify what has been learned by engaging in group-based

activities. The course mirrors what is happening in many workplaces that are transitioning to different methods of approaching

and solving challenging problems. This course exposes students to their innovative, creative, and entrepreneurial potential. These

tools will be useful in the workplace but also will enhance students’ lives because they are built on the characteristics of

exploration, unwillingness to settle, and the ability to develop innovative solutions to difficult problems.

ISC-360 Street Smarts - The Future of Urban Living: How Millennials Are Rethinking Urban Living Around the World

Through Art, Fashion and Health. Henseler, C. Millennials are the first generation to live in a world where the majority of

people interact in urban spaces. Street Smarts: The Future of Urban Living is a student-co-developed and co-led course that

explores the impact of urban environments on art, health, and fashion. Specifically, the class will focus on the cost and the

challenges the Millennial generation will face in four cities around the world: New York City, London, Hong Kong, and Rio de

Janeiro. The course will use discussion and humanities-centered materials to explore topics such as consumerism, social justice,

modern-day environmentalism, and the integration of technology into sustainable lifestyles. Students will explore a variety of

media such as documentaries, articles, and images and make cross-disciplinary connections between topics and ideas to suggest

solutions to their generation’s challenges.

LAS-201 Natural Resources History of Latin America and the Caribbean. Garcia, J. The course will examine the

development of natural resources in Latin America and the Caribbean from an indigenous, African diasporic and European

perspective and how they intersected. Foremost this will be an analysis of the development of capitalism in the New World and its

impact on European economic development through precious metals and agricultural products during the colonial period into the

18th, 19th and 20th centuries as mono-cultural products (sugar, cotton, coffee, and petroleum) were imposed. Furthermore, the

course will focus on how the U.S. adopted a neo-colonial role towards the region as European nations lost their empires, and

globalization created a dependency on U.S., European and Japanese economic support. The time span for this course is roughly

from pre-Colombian studies of natural resources, labor and their uses in various indigenous empires and their intersection with the

Spanish and Portuguese empires. This will include the rise of slavery in the production of natural resources and labor that were

instrumental in Spanish/Portuguese conflicts with the French and English empires. The British dominance of the slave trade and

its connections between the U.S. and Latin America and the Caribbean. The regions of specific study will include those countries

historically rich in natural resource including labor from the colonial period to the present. The comparative nature of the course

follows the political economy and historical sociology of the changing dynamics of globalization since the 1600s focused on the

strategic importance of Latin America and the Caribbean in the development of international capitalism.

PSC-349 Seminar: Comparative Politics - Technologies: Power, Politics and Society across Industrial Revolutions. Dallas, M.

With the advent of artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and the internet, we are already well into a Third Industrial

Revolution. If history is any guide, this industrial revolution is transforming society, politics and culture in ways both overt and

subtle. Further, as it diffuses, it will not be replicated identically across time and space. This course compares the first, second

and third industrial revolutions – selectively focusing on the advent of machines, mass production and information technologies,

respectively. For each revolution, the course asks three questions: 1) how value is created, 2) who controls and benefits from the

new modes of production and consumption, and 3) how it transforms and is transformed by its social and political

contexts. Second, it explores variation across different national political economies, most prominently in the advanced countries

of England, the US, Europe and Japan, with selective comparisons to China, Brazil and India.

PSY-239 Prejudice and Discrimination. Kelly, M. This course addresses critical issues of diversity and social justice in the lives

of adults, children and families. Students will learn why diversity and social justice are critical issues, analyze the psychological

foundations of their own biases, stereotypes, and prejudices, and understand how race, socioeconomic status, gender, sex, age,

ethnicity, sexual orientation, and religion can impact individuals and groups differently. Prerequisite: PSY-100.

SCH-400 Rethink: Reimagining Local and Global Economies. Henseler, C. Who are the individuals, groups and organizations

creatively re-imagining the way we, think, live and work? How and why are they opening spaces to new ideas that are having

dramatic effects on our communities? This class empowers students from all disciplinary backgrounds and interests to explore the

change they want to see in the world through concrete case studies. Students will discover how today’s most innovative thinkers

and doers are questioning assumptions, coming up with new solutions and working to transform the future. This seminar will

follow an exploratory and interactive class format driven by the interests of the students and the step-by-step development of a

well-researched, succinctly written and visually transformative magazine edition that will be printed and shared through social

media at the end of the term. Students will raise public awareness of how the most creative and caring minds of our time are

affecting the change the students want to see in the world.
