DO YOUR KIDS LOVE SEEING ANIMALS UP CLOSE? HERE’S AN EASY ACTIVITY FOR YOUR KIDS TO DO TO ENCOURAGE MORE BIRDLIFE

INTO YOUR GARDEN – A PERFECT ACTIVITY FOR SPRING!

Set your kids up with a few simple materials and they will have lots of fun making their own bird feeders and then watching the birds eat from them.

Things you need:

• Toilet paper rolls

• Jar of peanut butter

• Birdseed

• Blunt knife

Tip: Paper towel rolls are also great if you want to

entice some larger birds or hang up the roll with

some string.

How to make it:

1. Sprinkle a thick layer of birdseed into a large flat dish.

2. Spread peanut butter on the outside of a toilet

paper roll.

3. Roll the toilet paper roll back and forth across the

birdseed until it has a thick coating of seeds.

4. Your bird feeder is now ready to hang.

5. Find a small branch in a spot you can easily see

from your verandah or window and slide the bird

feeder roll onto the branch.

6. Keep an eye out over the next few days to see what

birds have discovered the tasty treat left for them.

SPRING INTO SCHOOL HOLIDAYS WITH AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE PASTIME!With over 12 million people attending the cinemas annually, the movies remains Australia’s favourite cultural activity* so why not head to BCC Cinemas to entertain the kids these school holidays!

There’s even some hip-pocket reprieve with the Event Cinemas Family Pass plus a free 3D upgrade~ when you see Pixels or Pan.

Pixels and Pan join Oddball and Blinky Bill: The Movie as the four great family films on offer these holidays – and with the family pass options now available it means you don’t have to make a choice, you can see them all!

In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults.

President Will Cooper has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner, now a home theatre installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders to defeat the aliens and save the planet.

Starring Hugh Jackman, Pan is the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny – to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

Oddball is a heart-warming true story of an eccentric chicken farmer who, with the help of his granddaughter, trains his mischievous dog to protect a wild penguin sanctuary from fox attacks, and in the process reunites the family and saves their seaside town. Oddball is a perfect family film, with a furry canine hero, lovable penguins, sneaky foxes and a crazy farmer... all set in a picturesque Aussie coastal town.

Everyone’s favourite koala, Blinky Bill, has a big imagination. An adventurer at heart, he dreams of leaving the little town of Green Patch and following in his explorer father’s footsteps. Mr Bill went missing in the Outback some time ago and Blinky is the only one who believes his father is still alive. In Blinky Bill: The Movie, Blinky embarks on a journey that takes him beyond the boundary of Green Patch and into the wild and dangerous Outback.

The family pass options are: $47 * for two adults and two kids or one adult and three kids *Plus $1.20 online booking fee

WINTER BLUES? TAKE TO THE WATER AND CHECK OUT THE WHALES! Grey nomads are not the only ones heading up the coast each winter in search of warmer weather. And while the caravan trek is a phenomenon of recent years, the other migration has been played out for thousands of generations as every year humpback whales make the journey from their summer home in the Antarctic to the subtropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

For a really memorable experience it is hard to beat going to sea on a whale watching boat like Whale One from Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Cruises run between June & November and offer a 100% money back guarantee. Whale One is a 20m catamaran powered by twin diesel engines for a cruising speed of over 18 knots. This section of coast, an hour’s drive north of Brisbane, has the happy coincidence of warm winter weather and a seemingly endless line of whales heading north from the frozen Antarctic to the warm waters around the Whitsunday Islands and beyond and then returning as summer comes on.

It has been estimated that up to 5000 whales make the 2500km journey up the east coast of Australia each year with numbers increasing steadily since whaling was abandoned in the ‘60s. Other southern hemisphere whale populations follow Australia’s west coast as well as other continents, and the northern populations make similar journeys north from the Arctic during their winter.

The migration is based around the whale’s mating and breeding season with calves born in the warmer water where they have time to build up blubber reserves to protect them from the cold before returning to the food rich seas around the southern ice shelf. At birth the babies are 5m long, and with a daily supply of 600l of fat rich milk they gain weight quickly. Experience whale watching with the experts on Whale One. WELCOME TO THE NEW LAGOONS 1770 RESORT & SPARelaxed, modern, casual, unique

Between Bundaberg and Gladstone, the southern Great Barrier Reef destination of Seventeen Seventy celebrates the opening on April 1, 2015 of the 4.5 star Lagoons 1770 Resort & Spa, the region’s first full-service holiday resort.

Stay a night on a romantic getaway or a week on a family holiday in the relaxing resort atmosphere. Set amongst beautifully landscaped vegetation, an extensive lagoon pool and tropical island form the resort’s centrepiece. Serviced by a world-class restaurant, with the tranquillity and rejuvenation of the day spa close to hand, Lagoons 1770 Resort & Spa is the perfect beachside paradise to relax and enjoy a complete holiday experience.

Elegantly designed for comfort in the tropics, the resort features 112 modern one and two bedroom apartments and executive studios with a choice of balconies, spa baths, patios and private courtyards, offering views over the beautiful lagoon pool or coastal hinterland surrounds.

The Plantation Bar & Restaurant serves the region’s best cuisine in a warm family environment. Serving innovative food for modern Australians, multi-award winning chef Ross Howell’s cuisine is produce-driven and handcrafted, sourced locally wherever possible.

Relax and unwind with Anjea Day Spa’s signature luxurious treatments using the highest quality products. Let experienced staff pamper you to escape the stresses of daily life and restore your natural energy.

General Manager Simon Della Santa says, “To enjoy a 4.5 star resort experience on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Lagoons 1770 Resort & Spa is only a short six hour drive from Brisbane making it very appealing compared to a two day road tour or flights into Far North Queensland.

“Our guests and the locals will love the quality of dining and events we’re bringing to the region, as will all the local producers we’ve been getting to know. This coastal community and its visitors will enjoy a much wider range of services than they’ve had before – Lagoons has everything you need to get the most from your time-out in this magnificent environment.”

Located on the magical stretch of sub-tropical surf coastline north of Fraser Island and south of the Whitsundays, the Southern Great Barrier Reef boasts Queensland’s most northern surf beach and world-class reef breaks. Seventeen Seventy is a picturesque seaside village featuring clear waters which can be swum and surfed in all year round. Local attractions include exploring national parks, golf, surf lessons, kayak tours, day-charter offshore fishing and taking a ride on the LARCs to Bustard Head Lighthouse. Day cruises are also available to the majestic Southern Great Barrier Reef where you can choose to either dive or snorkel the magnificent reef ecosystems.

STRAIGHT TEETH THE NATURAL WAY! Today about 80% of Australian children are growing up with crooked teeth. This is evidence of a craniofacial dystrophy (the poor development of the craniofacial structures). The craniofacial structures develop correctly only when children have:• lips together at rest• the tongue resting in the roof of the mouth• breathing through the nose (not the mouth!)• no lip or cheek movement on the subconscious swallow.

Craniofacial dystrophy can be evident in the first years of life and can be treated at that age. It is best treated in the growing child, with improvements in tooth position, jaw size, jaw relationship and the airway a consequence of improved craniofacial development.

Traditional orthodontic methods such as braces and extractions focus on moving teeth without regard for the underlying cause – it is not surprising that the vast majority of orthodontic treatment relapses without lifetime retention. The poor muscle and breathing patterns that originally caused the teeth to become ’crooked’ put the teeth back into that position when the retainers are no longer worn. Most orthodontic patients stop wearing retainers and see their tooth position relapse.

Dr John Flutter (BDS London Dental Surgeon) provides early intervention treatment options for children that improve the underlying cause of ‘crooked teeth’ to attain stable results.

This is called Myobrace Therapy. It treats children while they are still growing in order to improve cranial and jaw development. Treatment involves correcting the poor oral habits that impact negatively on the development of the face, jaws and teeth, such as mouth breathing and swallowing incorrectly.

A Myobrace is a functional appliance that retrains the muscles of the lips and tongue. It is worn for an hour a day as well as all night during sleep. This is done in combination with various exercises to help retrain the muscle patterns of the tongue and lips, which are ultimately responsible for the position of the teeth.

Another unique aspect of treatment is the incorporation of the ‘Breathing Retraining Programme’. Not only does breathing play an important role in the development of your child’s jaw – it also offers a world of health benefits that go beyond straight teeth!

Overall this gives a holistic and less invasive approach to orthodontic treatment. The goal is to create room for all of the teeth to come into alignment, not extract them!

Every child has the potential to grow straight teeth!

EXPLORE YOUR NATURAL HABITAT In the spirit of Spring and inspired by health, wellbeing and our beautiful natural landscape, Robina Town Centre invites you to experience ‘Your Natural Habitat’ – a series of sensory events, activities and installations designed to reconnect you to yourself and to nature.

From 10 September to 25 October, enjoy unique experiences from storytelling to health stations, craft workshops to rainforest meditation.

Experience the sights and sounds of the Living Rainforest with hundreds of native plants and meet the specialist Rangers and animals. Relax with free tai chi (Mondays at 9.00am) and rainforest meditation (Thursdays at 9.00am) in the tranquillity of the rainforest (bookings not required).

Wind your way to the Teepee Village on The Promenade and settle in for some great food and live music as Robina Unplugged showcases the best local artists. There’s also pop-up yoga on Tuesdays from 9.00am and craft workshops on Wednesdays at 9.00am. These activities are also free and no need to book.

While you’re in centre, check out the Parent’s Retreat in the new Coles Mall. This space has been designed by Ayden & Jess from Reno Rumble to help make shopping with the kids easier. Relax in the Parent’s Lounge or enjoy shopping without the kids while they’re entertained in the Kindy Kids Creativity Centre. Kindy Kids caters to children aged 3–5 years and is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 1.30pm. As a special opening offer, Kindy Kids craft and child minding is free for one hour (offer ends 24/9/2015 and numbers are strictly limited). Download the app “Stay N Play Centres” for more information and bookings. There is also a parking with prams zone on the upper level of the purple car park (access via Robina Town Centre Drive) with over 100 dedicated spaces to make your trip easier.

Take some time out for yourself and explore your Natural Habitat at Robina Town Centre.
