THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE OLLI OFFICE, 25 HALL STREET, CONCORD

Jane Fletcher, Program Director, Class of 2011

As I prepare to retire, please accept my sincere gratitude as I say thank you, OLLI members, for your enthusiastic participation. Thank you, OLLI volunteers, for your dedication, talent, time and professionalism. Thank you, OLLI staff, both past and present, for your high quality work and stellar customer service. Thank you, Granite State College staff, for your incomparable support. Thank you all for pretending to tolerate my sense of humor and most of all . . . for giving me the opportunity to play a part in this chapter of OLLI at Granite State College. It’s been my honor to be your Program Director.

What am I going to do now you ask? Why, register for OLLI courses on February 3 at 9:00 of course!

See you in class!

Jane Fletcher

Here’s what some of our very own OLLI volunteers have said about volunteering for OLLI:

By volunteering I’ve met new people with

common interests.

Volunteering helps me structure my days. It’s

good to have someplace to go most days.

When I retired and turned in my business cards I

lost part of my identity. I’m reinventing myself

as an OLLI volunteer!

Research shows the health benefits for individuals who volunteer include increased brain activity, preservation of cognitive functions, reduced rates of depression, increased feelings of productivity and an overall sense of an improved life.

Volunteerism is an integral and intentional piece of our OLLI. From an organizational perspective volunteerism equals commitment, commitment equates to ownership and ownership is key to the health and strength of any program. Whether you are the “just do it” type, a planner, a teacher or something else, OLLI volunteering is fun and friendly and does not need to involve a big-time commitment. OLLI offers one-time jobs, occasional jobs and long-term commitments. Volunteer choices at OLLI are like a box of chocolates. Pick the job that you like best (and if you don’t like your first choice- toss it out and pick another!)

To learn more:

Email the OLLI office at [email protected]. Tell the OLLI office what your volunteer interest is and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Call (603) 513-1377. Speak with a staff person or an office volunteer to learn more about the array of available opportunities.

Go online to https://olli.granite.edu/get-involved. View the video and complete the Volunteer Interest Form. Shared Leadership Model When asked what I’m proudest of as I retire, my answer is always promoting the shared leadership model under which OLLI operates today. The model was introduced eight years ago to promote mutual respect between staff and volunteers. Simply put it is intended to ensure that the volunteer leadership, Steering and Curriculum Committee in particular, in their role as advocates, have an equal say in decisions relating to the best interest of members. I am proud of this structure and that OLLI is a highly organized and respected program of Granite State College.

Surging SIGs (Special Interest Groups) Special Interest Groups are emerging as one of the most valuable member benefits of OLLI. Generally they are

developed at the individual learning site by one or more members with a special interest looking to share that interest

with other OLLI members. Sometimes they are a way to continue learning and doing something that started with an

OLLI class; other times they are based on a hobby or activity that’s more fun when shared with friends. Around the

state SIGs are gaining traction – they are free, fun and one more way to learn and hang out with OLLI buds. And

members from all sites are welcome at all SIGs. Unless otherwise noted, SIGs meet at the local GSC campus.

February 10: Why They Marched: Untold Stories of the Women Who Fought for the Right to Vote by Susan Ware

Discussion leader: Peg Fargo The author has researched and compiled stories about 19 activists who fought for women’s right to vote. Instead of the well-known suffragists, this is the story of women across the country, out of the spotlight, protesting, petitioning and demanding the right to vote.

Concord Area Hiking Group Saturday, February 22, 10:00 a.m.

Submitted by Ray Mercier, Class of 2015

The OLLI Concord Area Hiking Group had to cancel our January hike because the warm days and cold nights had turned the trails into ice-covered troughs. Our next hike will be the Jim Hill River Walk Trails (parking is at the end of Runnells Road.) This walk takes us beside the Contoocook River. If (hopefully) the snow is deep, this may be a snowshoe hike. The total distance is 2-1/4 miles and will take about two hours to complete. For further information

check out our website at https://hikeconcordolli.home.blog/ or contact Ray Mercier at (603) 831-3083. See you in the woods!

“The national consensus that reigned from the

New Deal through Lyndon Johnson’s Great

Society – that we should look to the federal

government to solve our biggest problems – has

unraveled. In this short book the authors explain

why, then propose a replacement: that we should

rely instead on local communities and regions to

address most issues, within limits guaranteed by

constitution rights. This is a profound insight.”

Culture of Giving Submitted by Pam Saulten, Class of 2013

Last month, as Chair of the Development Team, I had the pleasure of giving a 3-minute elevator speech about the “Culture of Giving” at all four Spring Class Previews. I met and spoke with OLLI members that I had never met before or even had the opportunity to see at any OLLI functions. It was fascinating to see each site’s spin on the Class Preview! I can’t help but mention how proud I am to be an OLLI member and donor. Let me reiterate what I told the Class Previews’ attendees. The Development Team’s goals this fiscal year are two-fold:

• First, to expand the knowledge and acceptance of the “Culture of Giving” to more of our OLLI members. Your donations assist in keeping the class fees low, raise money for scholarships and volunteer efforts and sustain OLLI with a rainy-day fund should we need it.

• Second, to raise $25,000 this fiscal year. How to reach our goal? An average donation of $20 per member gets us there. There are several ways to donate: when a class is cancelled or you cancel, donate the class fee; donate online when you register for classes; donate on June 9th on NH Gives Day, or donate by sending a check in the self-addressed envelope you received with the Annual Appeal letter in November.

You should know that we receive a tremendous amount of in kind support from Granite State College (GSC): accounting assistance, IT assistance, physical locations and on and on. We would like to thank GSC sincerely for all their support. If you love the classes, love the social events, enjoy Special Interest Groups and travel possibilities, please consider donating to OLLI. Know that OLLI and all its other members appreciate every dollar of your donation. Donate and be part of the “Culture of Giving” that supports a growing and healthy OLLI.

To donate online while you’re registering for classes, you may click on the Donations tile on the catalog page or, when you are checking out your course purchases, you will be asked if you would like to donate.

OLLI Fundraising Did You Know?

Besides appealing to members for donations, OLLI actively seeks business sponsors. Every ad you see in your Spring Course Catalog represents progress towards meeting our fundraising goals.

Your generous donations work to maintain affordable dues and class fees, supplement scholarships, ensure program sustainability and build organizational capacity. Thank you for supporting OLLI at Granite State College.

Chair’s Chat

As I travel around the state for OLLI events, and in this column, I have tried to explain the shared leadership between our staff and the volunteer Steering Committee. I am often asked how this applies to our member-driven, volunteer-led program. So last month, I displayed the OLLI organization chart in this column along with an explanation of how our structure works.

The morning of our scheduled full-day January Steering Committee meeting was devoted to this one topic of discussion: the Steering Committee, its history, purpose, responsibilities and plans for the future.

Each of the four learning sites’ representatives participated by bringing interesting comments and fascinating suggestions from their members into the discussion. After this lengthy, important conversation, six members along with a staff member, volunteered to review the Structure and Governance policy. They will determine if this policy document is still relevant or should be revised to accurately reflect the growth and changes of our program. They’ll report back to the full Steering Committee with recommendations at our next meeting.

After lunch the learning sites along with the OLLI staff presented reports on the their activity and plans for the remainder of the fiscal year.

A matter of mutual respect . . . Submitted by Jane Fletcher, Program Director

A member recently wrote about a concern which many members probably share: “Because the polarization among our citizenry is bound to only worsen as the election approaches, may I suggest that instructors discourage comments that would make others uncomfortable and never abuse the podium by either espousing their own political views or criticizing other perceived political adversaries. This is distracting to all and insulting to some.”

Since OLLI is a program of Granite State College, our policy on Academic Integrity mirrors the philosophy and practices of our host institution:

Academic integrity and intellectual truth are among the foremost priorities in institutions of higher learning. Without these, there is no real learning, critical thinking, creativity, or development of new knowledge.

It is essential that OLLI presenters have the right to express their views in a professionally responsible manner. It is also essential that diverse opinions are expressed and discussed. The views and opinions expressed in OLLI at Granite State College classes and presentations are those of the individual presenters and class participants and do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of Granite State College or of OLLI.
