PEOPLE THINK ABOUT KEINNORWhy do people talk about me? In basketball, people want to be on my team because I big body everyone. Girls and boys talk about me because I used to talk to everybody. I still do. People think I’m weird. People say, “Hi Keinnor.” Even people on the streets who I don’t know. They usually know me because of 826. I’m one of the best young writers and they never put me on the Young Writers’ Wall. I’m not done yet. I need to write more.

LA GENTE PIENSA EN KEINNOR¿Por qué la gente hablan de mí? En baloncesto, personas quieren estar en mi equipo porque estoy más grande que los demás. Niñas y niños hablan de mí porque antes conversaba con todos. Aún lo hago. La gente piensa que soy raro. La gente dice, “Hola Keinnor.” Incluso gente en la calle quien no conozco. Usualmente me conocen por 826. Soy uno de los mejores escritores y nunca me ponen en la Pared de Escritores. No he terminado. Necesito escribir más.

MY CULTUREMy culture is Mexico and North America. I like Mexico because I love their food and their candy. What I do at celebrations is celebrate with a piñata. Also, in North America, I eat food that is great. The type of music that we listen to is Latin music. We also dance a lot. We have hot weather and that’s how we get tan.

MI CULTURAMi cultura es México y América del Norte. Me gusta México porque me encanta la comida y el dulce. Lo que hago para celebrar es celebrar con una piñata. También, en América del Norte, como comida que es deliciosa. El tipo de música que escuchamos es música latina. También bailamos mucho. Tenemos un clima caliente, y así es como nos ponemos bronceados.

ERICK IN SAN FRANCISCOCHAPTER ONE: BABYI was born in a hospital, and I was taken care of. It was important because without Erick, it would not be the same.

CHAPTER TWO: TODDLERI would always play around and have fun. It was important because I learned how to take care of myself.

CHAPTER THREE: READY FOR SCHOOLI went to preschool and had lots of fun. It was important because I started to learn more new facts.

CHAPTER FOUR: SECOND GRADE I started second grade and it got more serious. It was important because I had to learn multiplication and I need to know it for the future.

CHAPTER FIVE: FOURTH GRADEFourth grade is hard and more serious because we need to learn long division and that’s hard for some people. It is important because I need to learn so I get into college.

CAPÍTULO CUATRO: SEGUNDO GRADOEmpecé el segundo grado y se puso más serio. Era importante porque tuve que aprender multiplicación y necesitaba saberlo para el futuro.

CAPÍTULO CINCO: CUARTO GRADO Cuarto grado es difícil y más serio porque tenemos que aprender división larga y es difícil para algunas personas. Es importante porque tengo que aprender para que yo vaya a la universidad.

MUSICAL HEARTAs I glanced for the first time at the wonderful little instrument, my heart filled with joy. I was so excited to learn something new!

I have been playing the violin for five years (since I was nine). When I play it, I enter a whole new world where I am free to express myself through the wonders of music. You do not have to speak the same language as someone to feel the wonders of music touch your soul. Music is a universal language, full of life and diversity.

You do not have to speak the same language or come from the same nation as the other musicians to show the world how teamwork and collaboration can emphasize the idea of beauty. Whenever I play music, I feel free. I feel like I can open my heart and be driven away by the wonders of music. I can surprise myself every day and discover what I am capable of. I can express myself and be challenged.

Being a musician and part of my orchestra has opened my eyes. It has helped me discover things that I never knew I could do, like play one of the most difficult instruments there is, or be able to teach myself the ukulele, and it has given me a love of trying new things. Being a musician has given me opportunities to show the world what I can do, and it has also boosted my

confidence in many ways. Throughout this journey as a musician, I have learned that even though things may seem difficult, if you believe in yourself, you can do anything you set your mind to.

CORAZÓN MUSICAL Cuando miré por primera vez mi pequeño instrumento maravilloso, mi corazón se llenó de felicidad. ¡Estaba tan emocionada para aprender algo nuevo!

He estado tocando el violín por cinco años (desde que tenía nueve años). Cuando lo toco, yo entro en un nuevo mundo, en cual me da la libertad de expresarme a través de las maravillas de la música. No tienes que hablar el mismo idioma de una persona para sentir las maravillas de la música tocando tu alma. La música es un idioma universal, llena de vida y diversidad.

No tienes que hablar el mismo idioma o venir del mismo país que otros músicos para enseñar el mundo como el trabajo en equipo y la colaboración pueden enfatizar la idea de belleza. Cuando yo toco música, me siento libre. Me siento que puedo abrir mi corazón y escapar a través de las maravillas de música. Me sorprendo cada día y descubro de lo que soy capáz. Puedo expresarme y enfrentar los retos.

Ser un músico y ser parte de mi orquesta me abrió los ojos. Me ha ayudado descubrir cosas nuevas que jamás pensé que podía hacer, como tocar uno de los instrumentos más difíciles que hay, o enseñarme a tocar el ukelele, y el amor de intentar cosas nuevas. Ser un músico me ha dado oportunidades de mostrar al mundo lo que puedo hacer, y ha aumentado mi confianza. A

través de éste camino como músico, he aprendido que aunque las cosas se parecen difíciles, si confías en ti mismo, puedes hacer cualquier cosa que te propones.

EDUARDO OLIVERA-DIAZAge 14 • Leadership High School

ABOUT MY NAMEMy name comes from my dad. My dad’s name is Eduardo too. It’s hard for some people to say because you need to say it with an accent.

My last name means “olive tree” and it’s Olivera. My other last name means “days” (dias in Spanish), because my name is Diaz, so I always have to correct people. Some people also call me Eddy. I don’t really mind, but it’s just kind of weird because usually everyone calls me by my first name. They usually call my dad Gualo because his name is Eduardo and they call me Eddy or Edu (Eduardito).

SOBRE MI NOMBRE Mi nombre viene de mi padre. El nombre de mi papá es Eduardo también. Para algunas personas, es difícil pronunciarlo porque tienes que decirlo con un acento. Mi apellido significa un árbol de oliva y es Olivera. Mi otro apellido significa días, días en Español porque mi nombre es Diaz, así que siempre tengo que corregir la gente. Algunas personas me llaman Eddy. No me molesta, pero es un poco raro porque normalmente todos usan mi primer nombre. Mi papá lo llaman Gualo usualmente porque su nombre es Eduardo, y me llaman Eddy or Edu (Eduardito).

FACING MY CHALLENGEIt was Monday at school when the teacher announced that we were going to have a project. Then she told us to choose our groups. She explained to us what our project would be about and when it was due. The project was about explaining and giving informative facts about any animal that we wanted.

My partner and I worked really hard on our project. It took us about a week and a half to finish the project. When we were all done, our teacher told us that we had to present to the whole class. I felt like my heart fell to my stomach. I was so nervous. All the groups presented, and then it was our turn. I was so scared to talk. I felt really weird because everyone was looking at me while I presented. I told myself I just had to get over it. I had to explain what animal we chose and give my classmates specific facts about the animal we chose. Overall, I did really well on the project. I learned to not feel nervous to talk and that I should be confident talking in front of other people.

ENFRENTANDO A MI RETOEra un lunes en la escuela cuando la maestra nos dijo que íbamos a hacer un proyecto. Después, ella nos mandó a elegir nuestros grupos. Nos explicó de qué se trataba el proyecto y cuando íbamos a tener que entregarlo. El proyecto era sobre un animal elegido, y tuvimos que explicar el animal y proveer datos sobre el animal.

Mi compañera y yo trabajamos muy duro en nuestro proyecto. Pasamos una semana y media terminando el proyecto. Cuando terminamos, la maestra nos dijo que teníamos que hacer una presentación enfrente de la clase entera. Me sentí que mi corazón se cayó hasta el suelo. Estaba tan nerviosa. Todos los grupos hicieron su presentación, y cuando era nuestro turno, estaba tan nerviosa. Tenía miedo de hablar. Me sentí tan rara porque todos me estaban mirando mientras hacía la presentación. Pensé, tengo que superarlo. Tuve que explicar el animal que elegimos y tuve que dar mis compañeros datos e información sobre el animal. En general, hice un buen trabajo en el proyecto. Yo aprendí que no debo estar nerviosa de hablar, y necesito tener confianza hablando enfrente de otras personas.

We said, “Okay, Dad.” Then my sister was going fast, so I went fast too because I thought it was a race. I lost my balance and I fell down.

At the same time, my dad came and asked me if I was okay and I told him, “I’m fine.”

In conclusion, I learned that not everything is a race. I felt nervous to ride a bicycle again. I’m still nervous to ride a bicycle again.

NUNCA MONTES EN BICICLETA Era un día soleado en el parque. Mi hermana y yo estábamos montando nuestros bicicletas y mi hermano estaba jugando en el parque solo. WHEN I FIRST ATE THAI FOODOne day, I was with my brother. We were going to get this food at a restaurant. It was lucky for me that he took me to the special restaurant. He didn’t think anyone would know about this place.

When we got there, I saw very few people. The place was really small. The place had two old statues at the front door. It was really scary because it was really spooky. Why were there two statues at the front door? The door was wooden with the window cracked.

Finally, my brother ordered the food. He really had a feeling we would like the food he had ordered. When I saw the food, it looked really tasty. We both drank water. The food wasn’t spicy. We ordered lots of plates with chicken and rice. The chicken and rice made me more hungry. It was really funny having to taste the food. I really wanted to come back.

MY RISKY DAYIt was a sunny day when I went downstairs to the garage. My mom and dad came downstairs, looking at me with smiles of surprise. They said, “We have a surprise for you.” Then my dad showed me a bike with no training wheels. It was blue.

“Is this my bike?” I asked. I was so excited when I saw it. I was happy to see it because it had so much detail and it also had a picture of a bee all over the bike! The bee was yellow and black.

I felt scared when I was about to ride my bike. When I rode it, I felt the wind and saw the sidewalk, but then I was close to the wall of my house. My bike was losing speed and wobbling and I fell.

Finally, I stood up and walked back to my garage. There was a little scrape on my knee, but it was the only one. My mom and dad were emotional. “We’re so happy for you to learn how to ride a bike,” they said.

Then I said to myself, “I’m proud of myself.” I learned how to ride a bike. I just had to believe in myself! I achieved my goal of riding my bike perfectly and I was safe.

BIG RISKOne time in the third grade, I was playing with my brother and my brother’s classmates when he started getting bullied. I watched them bully my brother for fifteen seconds before I started to punch them and beat them up a little because I wanted to protect my brother. At first he watched, amazed at what I was doing, but then he joined in. This happened again and again until one day, in ELD (English Language and I forgot what the D is sooo . . . (0.0)) when the class was watching a movie that I forgot the name of, a girl came to our classroom. Man, I wish I remembered that movie, but it isn’t important. What is IMPORTANT is that a girl named Claudia came to our classroom.

When she came into the class, she said, “Sebastian, can you come with me?”

I went with her to a room where my brother was, and we talked about how my brother got bullied and how we punched back against the bullies. After I told Claudia everything, she asked if we wanted to talk with the bullies. My brother became terrified, so we said, “No.”

The next day, my brother got bullied again. I told the teacher and he said, “Just tell them no, and that you don’t wanna hang out with them.” I mean bruh, what is that going to do? My brother

had to move schools TWICE because he got bullied at those schools. Only after moving to the third school did everything become cool (^_^). His new school is named TECA. Don’t ask me what it stands for because I have no idea. I don’t think I could even guess what the first letter means.

I never knew what happened in that movie I was watching when Claudia came to get me and I’m still bummed about it. I learned to not punch back or beat up a bully because you’ll probably get suspended instead of them. I got lucky, but still . . . just don’t do it, please. You can just tell them to stop, and if they don’t, then just leave and go to a different place where the bullies are not. If telling the bully to stop doesn’t work, then ask an adult in a calm voice for help. They will help you to think before you act.

EL GRAN RIESGOUna vez en el tercer grado, estaba jugando con mi hermano y su compañero de clase cuando fue víctima de un bully. Vi mi hermano ser acosado por quince segundos antes de empezar a darle un puñetazo y golpearlo un poco porque quería proteger a mi hermano. De primero él vio, con asombro de lo que estaba haciendo pero después él también participó. Esto sucedió una y otra vez hasta que un dia, en las clase de ELD (Inglés Lenguaje y se me olvido lo que la D es así que . . . (0.0)) cuando la clase estaba viendo una película de cual se me olvido el nombre, una niña vino a la clase. Hombre, quisiera recordar la película, pero no es importante. Lo que si es IMPORATANTE es que una niña llamada Claudia vino a nuestra clase.

Cuando entro a la clase, ella dijo, “¿Sebastián, puedes venir conmigo?”

Fui con ella a un cuarto donde estaba mi hermano y hablamos cómo fue acusado por un bully y como le dimos un puñetazo. Después le dije a Claudia todo, ella preguntó si queríamos hablar con los bullies. Mi hermano se asusto, así que le dijimos, “No.”

El proximo día, mi hermano fue acusando de nuevo. Le dije a el maestro y él dijo, “nomas dile que no, y que no queres pasar el rato con ellos.” ¿Quiero decir, bruh, y eso que va hacer? Mi hermano tuvo que mover de escuelas dos veces porque le

hicieron bully en esas escuelas. Solo después de moverse a la tercer escuela que todo mejoró (^_^). Su nueva escuela es TECA. No me pregunten lo que signica porque no tengo ni idea. No creo que pudiera adivinar lo que la primera letra significa. 

Nunca supe lo que pasó en la película que estaba viendo cuando Claudia vino a buscarme y todavía me siento molesto por eso. Aprendí a no regresar los puñetazos o pegarle al bully porque probablemente te suspenderán en vez de a ellos. Yo fui afortunado, pero todos modos . . . nomás no lo hagas, por favor. Todavía les puedes decir que paren, y si no, entonces sólo vete a otro lugar donde no están los bullies. Si diciéndole que pare a la persona que te está molestando, no funciona, entonces preguntare a un adulto en una voz calmada que te ayude. Ellos te ayudaran a pensar antes de actuar.

“Sure,” said my mom. When we went home, my sister was trying to buy UberEats because we were hungry. It ended up not working.

After, I asked my sister if she could buy me things online, since I saw her buying something. I thought she would like to buy me something too. I saw her buy some lip gloss and LED lights. When I asked my sister, she looked me in the eyes and said,

“Sure.”

In the end, I looked at what I could get for hours, but I ended up not getting anything because I didn’t know what to get. My sister wasted all the money and I was sad.

“Claro,” dijo mi mamá. Cuando fuimos a casa, mi hermana estaba intentando comprar UberEats porque teníamos hambre. No funcionó.

Después, pregunté a mi hermana si podía comprarme cosas en internet, porque la ví comprando algo. Pensé que iba a querer comprarme algo también. La ví comprar brillo de labios y luces LED. Cuando le pregunté a mi hermana, me miró a los ojos y dijo,

“Claro.”

Finalmente, estuve mirando lo que iba a comprar por horas y me quede sin comprar nada porque no sabia que comprar. Mi hermana gastó todo el dinero y yo estaba triste.

MY FIRST TIME RIDING A SLEDIt was a cold evening that day. In my car, we were driving to Lake Tahoe. Then I said, “I am excited to go to Lake Tahoe. I already saw snow because that was the first thing I saw.”

Then, I saw people sledding. I thought to myself, “That’s so cool.” I told my mom, “Mom, can I try sledding?”

I begged her until she said, “Yes.” I went up the mountain, then I did it!

In the end, we had to go back home because I was too, too, too tired. That was the day I learned how to sled. The end!

THE SPEECH OF RISK The day had finally come to tell people about what I had learned about the ghost station. It was summer, a great season to just relax, but for me, it was good and bad. I had to get ready to say what I had learned. My mom was going with me, but my siblings and cousins were not able to. That day, I got dressed and headed to 826 Valencia.

When we got to 826 Valencia to meet my tutors, Peter and Kathleen (The Great!), there were other kids who needed to also do their speeches. We went on the bus and got off the bus stop at City Hall. Once we got to City Hall, I was amazed and happy for myself because this was my chance to embrace what I had learned about the ghost station.

While we were at City Hall, we waited for the other two kids. When they arrived, it was time to go inside the place to practice, and then finally say our speeches out loud to people. Inside, we got a little tour before we practiced. After the little tour of City Hall, we finally went to the place where we would practice for the day. Next, we practiced until Peter told us that we were ready to say it out loud to the room. Finally, it was time to say what we had learned, but first we had to climb a long, big staircase up to the room.

Once we were in the room where we were going to explain what we learned, we went inside and had to wait for a little while for the people who work in the room. Once the time passed, they said that it was now okay to explain what we had learned over the past weeks. The first two kids were Max and Gabriela. When they finished, it was my turn. I was very nervous. In my mind, I thought, I’m going to make a mistake, but once I started reading out loud, I was very good. I didn’t make a single mistake (I only made two mistakes actually). When I finished, I was very proud of myself. I wanted to do public speaking again.

EL DISCURSO DE RIESGOSEl día al fin llegó para decirle a la gente lo que había aprendido de la estación de fantasmas. Era verano, un buen tiempo para relajarse, pero para mi era bueno y malo. Tuve que prepararme para decir lo que había aprendido. Mi mamá iba a acompañarme, pero mis hermanos y mis primos no iban a poder. Ese día, me vestí y fui a 826 Valencia.

Cuando llegamos a 826 Valencia para reunirnos con mis tutores, Peter y Kathleen (¡La Mayor!), había otros chamacos que también necesitaban preparar su discurso. Subimos al bus y fuimos hasta City Hall. Cuando llegamos a City Hall, estaba asombrada y feliz porque era mi oportunidad de reconocer lo que aprendí sobre la estación de fantasmas.

Cuando estábamos en City Hall, estábamos esperando los otros dos estudiantes. Cuando llegaron, era tiempo de entrar al lugar para practicar, y finalmente decir el discurso enfrente de la gente. Dentro, recibimos un pequeño recorrido antes de practicar. Después del pequeño recorrido de City Hall, finalmente fuimos al lugar donde íbamos a practicar. Después, practicamos hasta que Peter nos dijo que estabamos preparados para decirlo enfrente de todos. Finalmente, era tiempo de decir lo que habíamos aprendido, pero primero tuvimos que subir una larga, grande escalera al salón.

Cuando ya estuvimos en el cuarto donde íbamos a explicar lo que habíamos aprendido, fuimos dentro y tuvimos que esperar un poco de tiempo para la gente que trabaja ahí. Cuando ya pasó el tiempo, nos dijeron que era tiempo para explicar lo que habíamos aprendido en las dos últimas semanas. Los primeros estudiantes eran Max y Gabriela. Cuando terminaron, era mi turno. Estaba muy nerviosa. En mi mente, pensé, Voy a cometer un error, pero cuando empecé a leer en voz alta, lo hice súper bien. No cometí ni un solo error. (Solo cometí dos errores actualmente.) Cuando terminé, estaba tan orgullosa de mi misma. Quería hablar en público otra vez.

He said, “Okay,” so we all went. In the end, I was on the swings and both of my sisters decided to push me off. They pushed me off and I hit the ground. I felt a huge crack in my hand. I remember I thought I was so cool because I broke my hand and my mouth was bleeding. The end.

Lesly told them, “Stop being so loud!”

Joe looked back at Luke and back at us and said, “Sure, you guys should be quiet with that stupid TikTok stuff.”

So Cassy and I said, “Whatever, you have the app too.”

In the end, we made some really good TikToks.

DISCOVERING A NEW WORLDI felt the plane touch the ground. We had finally landed after half a day of being stuck in airports, sleeping in planes, and waiting to board. After that, we got our bags and went through security. It took a long time because we had a lot of stuff.

Next, we met family. We saw uncles, aunts, cousins, and more. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was interesting. We stayed in Guatemala for ten days. During those ten days, we had a lot of fun. We played with our younger cousin a lot. We went to the city a lot of times. We even got a new TV for our grandma!

At last, the tenth and final day came. After packing our bags earlier, we left at midnight. We had to sit in the car for three hours, since that was how far Guatemala City was. As soon as I set foot in the airport, I knew it was going to be a long time until we got home.

DESCUBRIENDO UN MUNDO NUEVOSentí el avión tocando la tierra. Finalmente habíamos aterrizado después de pasar la mitad del día atrapados en aeropuertos, durmiendo nos en aviones, y esperando para abordar. Después de eso, agarramos las maletas y pasamos por inspección. Demoramos mucho tiempo porque teníamos muchas cosas.

Después, nos reunímos con familia. Vimos tíos, tías, primos, y más. No sabía qué esperar, pero era interesante. Nos quedamos en Guatemala diez días. Durante esos diez días, nos divertimos mucho. Jugamos con nuestro primito mucho. Fuimos a la ciudad muchas veces. ¡Incluso compramos una televisión nueva para nuestra abuela!

Al fín, el día final llegó. Después de hacer las maletas, nos fuimos a medianoche. Tuvimos que sentarnos en el carro por tres horas, ya que así de lejos estaba la ciudad. Tan pronto que puse un pie en el aeropuerto, sabía que iba a ser un tiempo largo para llegar a casa.

THE ATTACK OF THE CRICKETS!Have you ever tried eating crickets? I first tried crickets on a summer day at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. My parents told me, “Guess what? We’re having crickets.” I gasped. My heart was bouncing like a bouncy ball.

I said, “I think I’ll pass.”

My dad said, “I don’t think so. We ordered a family size.” My heart bounced even harder. My sister was lucky, she didn’t have to try it. A big plate with crickets landed on the table. When I saw them, I backed up. I was not too excited. My parents pushed it towards me. It smelled okay. I had goose bumps all over my body.

My parents forced me to do it. I grabbed one and it felt like a squishy teeny-tiny little insect. It looked like they mixed red and brown paint and put it on the cricket.

Finally, I had no choice but to try it. I wasn’t ready for it. I counted 1 . . . 2 . . . 3. I took a bite. Suddenly, I tasted something that was so good. It was like heaven in my mouth. “So good,” I said. I learned a lesson: don’t judge a book by its cover!

¡EL ATAQUE DE LOS GRILLOS! ¿Alguna vez has comido grillos? Probé grillos por primera vez un día de verano en un restaurante mexicano en Los Ángeles. Mis padres me dijeron, “¿Sabes que? Vamos a comer grillos.” Jadeé. Mi corazón estaba botando como una bola hinchable.

Dije, “Creo que no lo voy a hacer.”

Mi papá me dijo, “Creo que no. Pedimos el tamaño de familia.” Mi corazón botaba aún más fuerte. Mi hermana tenía suerte, no tuvo que probarlos. Un plato grande de grillos llegó en la mesa. Cuando los ví, me retrocedí. No estaba muy emocionada. Mis padres los empujaron hacia mí. Olía bien. Tenía la piel de gallina sobre mi cuerpo entero.

Mis padres me forzaron hacerlo. Agarre uno y sentía como un bicho blando chiquitito. Parecía que habían mezclado pintura roja y marrón y lo habían puesto encima del grillo.

Finalmente, no tenía más remedio que probarlos. No estaba lista para hacerlo. Empecé a contar 1 . . . 2 . . . 3. Tomé una mordida. De pronto, probé algo que tenía un buen sabor. Era como el cielo en la boca. “Tan bueno,” dije yo. ¡Aprendí algo: nunca juzgues un libro por su portada!

DROWNINGIt was my first time in a long time swimming in a pool. Last summer, I was in Mexico staying in a hotel, the Marriott, near the beach and a huge pool. I was with my friend, Arya, swimming in the swimming pool. Then all of a sudden, I felt like I was starting to drown. Arya was with me and she pushed me towards the stairs. I felt really scared. Then Arya said, “Take it slowly.” In the end, I was able to float. After I realized that, I was in the pool every single day and enjoyed Mexico.

AHOGÁNDOSEEra mi primera vez en un largo tiempo de nadar en una piscina. El verano pasado, estaba en México quedandome en el Marriott, cerca de la playa y una piscina grande. OCEAN FEARWe were all on vacation in Mexico. I was sitting at the table with my mom and my aunt, watching my older cousins play in the water. It looked like a lot of fun, but the second my cousins would turn their backs, the waves would swallow them and spit my cousins out again. It looked scary at the same time. So I just sat on the side eating my shrimp. “Go! Come on, don’t be scared,” said my mom.

After I finished, I started wondering if the water was warm or cold. Was it salty or sweet? I was wondering so much. My mom tried encouraging me to go in a little bit of the water. I said no. It did seem fun and there was no other way my questions were going to get answered like that. “Well, there is only one way to find out,” said my cousin, grabbing a towel and sitting down.

Finally I gave in and said yes. My aunt and I walked slowly into the water. When I touched it, it was warm and of course, salty. It burned when it got in my eyes. I’m not scared anymore, but I still don’t like the ocean. I was very proud of myself. “I did it!” I screamed at the end. Everybody cheered.

“I knew you could do it,” said my mom.

TEMOR DEL MARTodos estábamos de vacaciones en México. Yo estaba sentada en la mesa con mi mamá y mi tía, mirando mis primos mayores jugando en el agua. Me pareció muy divertido, pero tan pronto que mis primos volteaban, las olas los tragaban y escupían de nuevo. Se veía espantoso también al mismo tiempo.

Después que terminé, tenía la curiosidad si el agua era tibio o frío. ¿Era salado o dulce? Tenía muchas preguntas. Mi mamá intentó animarme a meterme en el agua un poco. Dije que no. Se parecía divertido, pero no había manera de encontrar las respuestas a mis preguntas así. “Pues, solo hay una forma de saberlo,” dijeron mis primos, agarrando una toalla y sentándose.

Finalmente me rendí y dije que sí. Mi tia y yo caminamos despacio entrando el agua. Cuando lo toqué, estaba tibio y salado. El agua ardía cuando me llegó a los ojos. Ya no tengo miedo, pero todavía no me gusta el mar. Estaba orgullosa de mi misma. “¡Lo hice!” grité al fin. Todos aplaudieron.

The two new friends decided that they wanted to explore a place called Fun Jumping Place together. This place was very fun because there were lots of jumpers there. When they arrived, they started to scream and fight. They also explored the land to see if they could find any toys to take back home with them.

Soon enough, they saw that the sun was beginning to set. It had been a fun day for both of them, and they both felt like it was time to eat. So they said goodbye to one another and had good thoughts in their heads as they made their way home. The end!

On the way to school is a mosaic picture of three children growing lots of vegetables. What I feel about the mosaic is happy because the mosaic is beautiful for the school. These two things never go away and have been there for a long time.

“I need help. Can you help me find the rainbow waterfall?”

“Sure. Just go straight past the seaweed gates, swim to the right, and then take the left, and then go sideways where you’ll find a rocky blue gate that has a red button. Once you push it, turn and it will open the rocky blue gate and you will see the rainbow waterfall.”

Caroline said, “Thank you.” Caroline went swimming where Lucie told her to and found the rainbow waterfall. The waterfall was sparkly and there were different kinds of fishes. Caroline introduced herself to different kinds of fishes and Caroline made new friends. The end.

SURFBOARDS AND BOOGIE BOARDS“AAGGGHHH! My leg will get devoured by a shark.” That’s what I kept telling myself. I was on the private bus at Camp Su-Kay-Ca which stands for surfing, kayaking, canoeing. I was watching TV on the bus and the show was about a person who would travel all over the world just to find a place to surf. It was boring, but it taught you about birds, oceans, and the community all over the world. I also just liked seeing how they surfed, how they would swim through the waves or even go under the waves, but my favorite part was how they would fall off the wave.

“This movie is okay,” said my friend Madison.

“I agree. By the way, I have a joke, want to hear it?”

“Go for it.”

“What do you give to an injured pig?”

“I don’t know,” protested Madison. 

“Oinkment. Hahahaha.” 

“I, Madison Fontaine, swear that was one of the funniest jokes that has ever been told. Ever.”

After we got to Half Moon Bay, we took all the surfboards and the boogie boards. 

“Before we get out into the ocean, we have to do some basics and we have to learn how to surf. Now please put on your wet suits.”

It was so cold on the beach, I had so many goose bumps. Once everyone was done putting on their wet suits, we practiced some basics. About twenty minutes later, everyone went to the water to get their hair wet and just get used to it. When we all went to grab either a boogie board or surfboard, I didn’t want to take any risks, so I attached the band to my wrist and asked, “How you do this?” So apparently, you have to hop on and wait for a wave to come and it would push you away. 

After, I got bored of the boogie board. So me and my friends were just swimming and having a good time. But then we saw a dolphin, so we started swimming, but our coach/lifeguard stopped us. 

“I wish I had a dolphin like Barbie,” Sophie blurted out. 

“Too bad Amazon doesn’t have dolphins,” Maddie said. 

“Well if they did, I think there wouldn’t be any left because you would buy all of them,” I said. 

After, we all went to the sand to eat lunch, but it was only 11:00 a.m. so I decided that I would try surfing. So, I attached the band to my ankle and got into the water. At first I got into the water,

but I couldn’t balance, so my coach had to grab the board and my instructor helped me onto the back of the board and would give me a push, but I would paddle really slow and roll into the water. So after, I tried again and this time I paddled faster, but I fell because my balance was bad. So, I decided to take a break and went to eat my lunch. After, I went to practice some more twister and he gave me some pointers. As the days went by, I learned how to balance and get up without falling and hitting my face on the board. And on the last day I learned how to ride a surfboard!

TABLAS DE SURF Y TABLAS DE BOOGIE“¡AAGGGHHH! Mi pierna fue mordida por un tiburón.” Eso fue lo que me seguí desciendo. Estaba en un camión privado en Camp Su-Kay-Ca que significa surfeando, el piraguismo, y hacer kayak. Estaba viendo televisión en el camión y el programa era sobre una persona que viajaba por el mundo para encontrar lugares para surf. Era aburrido pero te enseñaba sobre pájaros, el océano y la comunidad alrededor del mundo. También me gustaba ver como hacían surf, como nadaban por las olas o ir debajo de la olas, pero mi parte favorito era cuando se caerían de la ola.

“Esta película está más o menos” dijo mi amiga Madison.

“Yo estoy de acuerdo. ¿Sabes que, tengo un chiste, quieres escucharlo?”

Después de que llegamos a Half Moon Bay llevamos las tablas de surf y las tablas de barrenar.

“Antes de salir al mar tenemos que hacer los básicos y aprender como hacer surf pero por ahorita por favor póngase los trajes de buceo.”

Estaba tan frío en la playa que tenía escalofríos. Ya que todos se habían puesto sus trajes de buceo, practicamos unos básicos movimientos. Como veinte minutos después todos entraron al mar para mojarse el pelo y para acostumbrarse. Cuando todos fuimos agarrar las tablas de surf y las tablas de barrenar, no quería tomar ningún riesgo entonces amaré el cinto a mi muñeca y pregunté cómo hago esto. Lo que tienes que hacer es brincar arriba y luego esperar que llegue una ola para que te empuje.

Después me aburrí de las tablas de barrenar. Así que yo y mis amigos fuimos a nadar y a pasarla bien. Pero de repente vimos un delfín así que iniciamos a nadar, pero nuestro instructor nos paró. 

“Quisiera tener un delfín como Barbie,” Sophie grito. 

“Lo malo es que Amazon no vende delfines,” Maddie dijo. 

“Pos si vendían no pienso que sobrarían porque los comprarías todos,” Yo dije. 

Después, nos fuimos a la arena para comer nuestro almuerzo, pero solo eran las 11 de la mañana. Así que decidí intentarlo otra vez. Empate el cinto a mi tobillo y me metí al agua. Primero me

metí a la agua pero no me podía balancear así que mi instructor tuvo que detener la tabla y me ayudó a subirme y me dio un empujón pero yo no le daba muy fuerte así que me caéia al agua. Lo intente de nuevo y esta vez le di más fuerte pero me cae porque perdí me balancee. Decidí tomar un descanso y fui a comerme mi almuerzo. Después fui a practicar un poco más y dio unas sugerencias. Así pasó el día, aprendí a balacear y levantarme sin caerme y pegarme en la tabla. ¡Y en el último día aprendí a usar la tabla de surf!

LOOP-THE-LOOPIt was 3:00 in the morning when my mom woke me and my friend. We called an Uber and when we got to the airport, we found some place to eat breakfast. We still had a lot of time before our flight left. So, we wandered around for a while. When the time came, we went to our gate. 

Finally, we got on the plane and found our seats and we saw a lot of people that looked like they were going to Disneyland. I had the feeling we were landing. We finally made it out of the plane and found our Uber. Well, at least that’s what my mom said, but we actually ended up being in a limo. We got in the back and there was soda, disco lights, and our own little radio. We got to the hotel, put our stuff away, then walked over to Disneyland! We got to the ride and waited in line. My heart was racing! I was so scared, especially considering that I had never really been on a real rollercoaster before. 

Finally, it was our turn. We sat down and they told us to put our stuff in the pouches in front of us so our stuff wouldn’t fall out when we went upside down. When they said that, I started to freak out, but it was okay. Finally, it started and we went through a dark tunnel and I couldn’t see anything. Then I saw light and we shot straight down. I was terrified! I shut my eyes and when I thought it was over, I opened them, but I saw the loop-the-loop. I shut my eyes as tight as I could. Then I finally felt the ride stop. I was so relieved it was finally over!

BUCLE DEL BUCLEEran las 3 de la mañana cuando mi mamá nos levanto a mí y mi amigo. Llamamos a un Uber y cuando llegamos al aeropuerto, encontramos un lugar para comer desayuno. Todavía teníamos mucho tiempo antes de nuestro vuelo. Entonces paseamos por un rato. Cuando era tiempo nos fuimos a la puerta. 

Finalmente nos subimos al avión y encontramos nuestros asientos y vimos muchas personas que se veían como si ivan a Disneylandia. Tenía la sensación que estábamos aterrizando. Finalmente nos salimos del avión y encontramos un Uber. Pos eso fue lo que dijo mi mamá, pero en actualidad nos subimos a una limusina. Nos sentamos atrás y había soda, luces de disco, y nuestro propio radio. Llegamos al hotel, guardamos las cosas y caminamos hacia Disneylandia. Llegamos al juego y esperamos en línea. ¡Mi corazón estaba palpitando rápido! Tenía mucho miedo, especialmente porque nunca me había subido a una montaña rusa.

Finalmente era nuestro turno. Nos sentamos y nos dijeron que pongamos nuestras cosas en el bolsillo en frente de nosotros para que no se salgan cuando andemos boca abajo. Cuando dijeron eso, empeze a preocuparme, pero estaba bien. Finalmente empezó y fuimos por un túnel oscuro y no podía ver nada. Después vi una luz y bajamos de repente bien rapido. ¡Tenía tanto miedo! Cerré mis ojos y cuando pensé que se había

terminado abrí mis ojos pero vi el bucle del bucle. Cerré mis ojos bien lo más fuerte que podía. Después finalmente sentí el juego llegar a una parada. ¡Estaba tan aliviado que se había terminado!

Dr. Seuss was the one who gave inspiration to others and was able to do more for the people that he represented, such as people who are struggling. He helped the people to dream so they could do the same for others.

My pet, DJ, helped me when I was sad and when I was happy. She was albino, white as snow with red eyes that burned like fire. She liked to fly and she liked to eat. She was always very hungry so she chased anything.

Stan Lee, Dr. Seuss, and DJ were very friendly and helped me through anything. I enjoyed Marvel characters and Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat. I liked DJ’s white feathers and her red eyes and I liked how she bit people then flew away just to act like it was not her.

THE BEST AUNT MIKAI wish I could go ice skating with my Aunt Mika because she works really hard. She’s bad at ice skating, so I would like to see her fall. She has long blond hair with dark brown roots. I went to the water park with her and we went down a waterslide and she got scared. She scares me a lot and listens to me. One time I wanted some hot chips and she bought some for me. She really likes Turkish stuff, like the food and how they talk. My favorite memory with her was when we were at church. She told me to go up to the stand to talk, but she forgot how shy I was. When she saw how shy I was on the stand, she never asked me again.

LA MEJOR TÍA MIKAMe gustaría ir a patinar sobre hielo con mi tía Mika porque trabaja muy duro. Ella es mala en el patinaje sobre hielo, así que me gustaría verla caer. Tiene pelo rubio y largo con raíces de color marrón oscuro. Fui al parque acuático con ella y bajamos el tobogán acuático y se asustó. Me asusta mucho y me escucha. 826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writings skills are fundamental to future success.

826 Valencia comprises three writing centers—located in San Francisco’s Mission District, Tenderloin neighborhood, and Mission Bay—and three satellite classrooms at nearby schools. All of our centers are fronted by kid-friendly, weird, and whimsical stores, which serve as portals to learning and gateways for the community. All of our programs are offered free of charge. Since we first opened our doors in 2002, thousands of volunteers have dedicated their time to working with tens of thousands of students.

PROGRAMSFIELD TRIPS Classes from public schools around San Francisco visit our writing centers for a morning of high-energy learning about the craft of storytelling. Four days a week, our Field Trips produce bound, illustrated books and professional-quality podcasts, infusing creativity, collaboration, and the arts into students’ regular school day.

826 Valencia es una organización sin fines de lucro que se dedica al apoyo de estudiantes de bajos recursos (6-18 años) para el desarrollo de su escritura creativa y narrativa. También brindamos ayuda a los maestros para que inspiren a sus alumnos a escribir. Nuestros servicios se basan en la idea de que gran crecimiento en el aprendizaje ocurre con la atención personalizada, y estamos convencidos  que las habilidades en la escritura son fundamentales para el éxito en el futuro.

826 Valencia tiene tres centros de escritura, ubicados en los barrios de Mission, Tenderloin, y Mission Bay en San Francisco. Además, tiene tres aulas afiliadas en las escuelas alrededor de los centros. Cada centro de escritura tiene una tienda en la entrada con un ambiente dirigido a los niños de aventura y fantasía; las tiendas sirven como portales al aprendizaje y entradas a las comunidades. Todos nuestros programas son gratuitos. Desde que abrimos en 2002, miles de voluntarios han dedicado su tiempo para trabajar con decenas de miles de estudiantes.

IN-SCHOOLS PROGRAMSWe bring teams of volunteers into high-need schools around the city to support teachers and provide one-on-one assistance to students as they tackle various writing projects, including newspapers, research papers, oral histories, and more. We have a special presence at Buena Vista Horace Mann K–8, Everett Middle School, and Mission High School, where we staff dedicated Writers’ Rooms throughout the school year.

AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORINGDuring the school year, 826 Valencia’s centers are packed five days a week with neighborhood students who come in after school and in the evenings for tutoring in all subject areas, with a special emphasis on creative writing and publishing. During the summer these students participate in our Exploring Words Summer Camp, where we explore science and writing through projects, outings, and activities in a super fun, educational environment.

WORKSHOPS826 Valencia offers workshops designed to foster creativity and strengthen writing skills in a wide variety of areas, from playwriting to personal essays to starting a zine. All workshops, from the playful to the practical, are project-based and are taught by experienced, accomplished professionals. Over the summer, our Young Authors’ Workshop provides an intensive writing experience for high-school-aged students.

TUTORÍA DESPUÉS DE ESCUELADurante el año escolar, los centros de 826 Valencia están llenos diariamente con estudiantes del barrio. Llegan después de escuela para recibir ayuda con todas las asignaturas. Hay un enfoque especial en la escritura creativa y en las publicaciones. Durante el verano, los estudiantes participan en el campamento Explorando Palabras, dónde investigan la ciencia y la escritura a través de proyectos, paseos, y otras actividades en un ambiente súper divertido y educativo.

TALLERES826 Valencia ofrece talleres diseñados para fomentar la creatividad, y mejorar las habilidades en la escritura. COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESSWe offer a roster of programs designed to help students get into college and be successful there. Every year, we grant several $20,000 scholarships to college-bound seniors, provide one-on-one support to two hundred students via the Great San Francisco Personal Statement Weekend, and partner with ScholarMatch to offer college access workshops to the middle- and high-school students in our tutoring programs. We also offer internships, peer tutoring stipends, and career workshops to our youth leaders.

PUBLISHINGStudents in all of 826 Valencia’s programs have the ability to explore, experience, and celebrate themselves as writers in part because of our professional-quality publishing. In addition to the book you’re holding, 826 Valencia publishes newspapers, magazines, chapbooks, podcasts, and blogs—all written by students.

TEACHER OF THE MONTHFrom the beginning, 826 Valencia’s goal has been to support teachers. We aim to both provide the classroom support that helps our hardworking teachers meet the needs of all our students and to celebrate their important work. Every month, we receive letters from students, parents, and educators nominating outstanding teachers for our Teacher of the Month award, which comes with a $1,500 honorarium. WRITING IS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT in our After-School Tutoring Program at 826 Valencia. Upon completing homework assignments, enrolled students engage with a wide range of writing curriculum. With the support of 826 staff and volunteers, students select their favorite writing pieces and then edit their own work. Finally, these pieces are translated and published every year in this bilingual book. Our publication is traditionally released with our young authors reading their writing to fellow students, families, and tutors at the end of the school year.

LA ESCRITURA ES UN COMPONENTE ESENCIAL en nuestro Programa de Tutoría Post-Escuela en 826 Valencia.
