Parents of young children mayneed to brush up on theirknowledge of child safety seats

and seat belt restraints. Many are stilloperating in adherence to olderguidelines that go back more than adecade. As a result, parents should re-educate themselves in order to ensurechild safety.

In guidelines published in April of2011, the American Academy ofPediatrics made some modifications tothe period of time a child should bekept in a rear-facing seat. Prior to 2011,parents were told it was safest forinfants and toddlers to ride rear-facingup to the limits of the car seat or whenchildren reached 12 months in age and20 pounds. But new guidelines advisethat children should be kept rear-facing until age 2, or until they reachthe maximum height and weight fortheir seat.

"A rear-facing child safety seat does abetter job of supporting the head, neckand spine of infants and toddlers in acrash, because it distributes the forceof the collision over the entire body,"says Dennis Durbin, MD, FAAP, the leadauthor of the new policy.

Transport Canada says childrenshould be kept in rear-facing seats untilthey outgrow them. There are somerear-facing seats that willaccommodate children up to 20 kg (40pounds). As long as the child is stillbelow the weight and height limit ofthe current child seat, they shouldcontinue to face the back of the car.

Rear-facing seat recommendationsweren't the only ones to be modified in2011. New advice on booster seats forolder children were also presented. TheAAP and the National Highway TrafficSafety Administration say childrenshould ride in a belt-positioningbooster -- which is the high-backbooster seat that provides a guide forthe vehicle's seat belt -- until they are

at least 4 feet, 9 inches and between 8to 12 years old.

Vehicle seat belts are designed to fitan average adult. In order to get thebest protection, children usually need abooster seat until they are about 4 feet9 inches tall and weigh between 80 to100 pounds. Smaller children mayneed to remain in a booster a littlelonger than anticipated.

Transport Canada advises that aslong as a child still fits within themanufacturer's weight and heightlimits for the booster seat, it is safer forthe child to remain in the booster seatrather than wear a regular seat belt.Canadians also are urged to check withtheir province or territory for specificlaws concerning when a child canmove to a seat belt.

Children should not ride in the frontseat of a car until they are age 13 orolder. Parents of preteens who wereunder the impression that booster seatdays were coming to an end will needto keep the safety seats in the car a fewyears longer. But safety seats shouldnot be placed in an area of the carwhere an air bag can be deployed.

Parents and other adult drivers maywant to heed some other safetyprecautions before a child is upgradedto a new seat.

* A seat belt should never beplaced under a child's arm.* Children should always bebuckled up in a booster seat withboth the shoulder and lap belt.* The seat belt should fall acrossthe shoulders and the lap beltshould rest on the upper thighswhen a child is in the seat of a car.If the seat belt rubs against theneck, the child is not yet tallenough to give up a booster seat.* Mirrors placed in the rear seat ofthe car can help parents see theirchildren in rear-facing toddlerseats.

* Children who cannot be trustedto keep a seat belt latched shouldnot be moved from a five-pointharness to a regular seat belt.* Parents unsure if their childrenare buckled up correctly can havethe seat checked at a policestation or first aid building.

Keeping children safe meansheeding warnings and guidelinesregarding safety restraints. It is notadviseable to upgrade a child into thenext seat until he or she has met all themeasurement requirements set inplace.

Newer child safety seatguidelines

In addition to using the right carseat for a child's age, weight andheight, drivers should also be

aware to check the expiration dates ofseats they already have. While a carseat will not grow moldy after a fewyears, it does "expire," meaning it is nolonger deemed safe for use. That'sbecause these seats are not built to lastforever. Hairline cracks may form inthe plastic, and the harness belts maybecome stretched or more elastic afteryears of use. Manufacturers do not testsafety seats after a certain period oftime, so they cannot state how theywill perform in an accident after manyyears. Most seats will feature a label onthe bottom that indicates when theseat is likely to become unsafe --typically between five and six yearsafter manufacture. It can be temptingto borrow a used car seat from a friendor family member to save money, but ifthe seat is older parents could beputting children at risk.

Agood road trip can be theultimate spring or summerexperience. With the open road

ahead, life's troubles seem to melt andthere's just the oneness of the driverand the road.

For a road trip to be successful, it'snot just a matter of taking to the roadand putting the pedal to the metal. There are a host of considerations tomake, which can ensure safety andpeace of mind when beginning yourexcursion. The hot sun that can bakethe roadway -- and your body -- canalso take its toll on your car, contributing to breakdowns. And thereare other factors to be aware of.

Maintenance should never beoverlooked when it comes to preppingfor a road trip. At the least, TheNational Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration recommends thatdrivers have their tires, battery, belts, fluids, and air conditioner checked by aqualified mechanic prior to startingany long trip. But the list does not stopthere. There are many otherprecautions to heed before taking tothe road.

* Be sure to have all necessarydocuments on hand. Nothing can stalla road trip faster than getting pulledover by a police officer and beingwithout your license, registration andproof of insurance. These are requireddocuments to operate a vehicle, and it'sdefinitely worth a second check in yourwallet and glove compartment to besure they are where they should be.

* Get an oil change. Driving longintervals can be taxing on a car engine,as can the start-and-stops associatedwith getting stuck in road trip traffic.Do yourself and your car a favor bygetting an oil change to ensure therewill be proper lubrication of the engineand that thick, old motor oil won'tcontribute to a breakdown.

* Update your GPS. If you will be

using a GPS device as your primarytool for navigation, update the device'smaps before departure. Roadways arealways being changed, and withoutdownloading the proper updates, youcould end up driving in circles insteadof moving on to your destination. Inaddition, many GPS models comeequipped with pinpointing points ofinterest, or POI, such as restaurants, tourist areas, hotels, and rest stops, which should be update beforebeginning the trip. Follow theguidelines spelled out in the owner'smanual that comes with your GPSunit. Consumer Reports also advisesknowing the local ordinancesregarding GPS use. For example, awindshield-mounted unit is notallowed while driving in Minnesota.

* Plan who will drive when. A longroad trip -- one that will be doneprimarily in one day -- couldnecessitate splitting up the tripbetween two or more drivers. Not onlydoes this banish boredom, it alsoreduces the risk of driver fatigue.NHTSA estimates that approximately100,000 police-reported crashes in theUnited States each year involvedrowsiness and/or fatigue.

* Protect your eyes. The weather andthe position of the sun could changedepending on where you are driving. Ifyou wear glasses or contacts fordriving, be sure you have them withyou. Keep a few pairs of sunglasses inyour car to shield your eyes from sunglare. If the sun proves problematic, pull over for a little while or try analternate route that prevents oncomingsun on the windshield. While you arepacking sunglasses, also be sure tobring along -- and wear -- sunscreen, asthe sun's rays can be magnifiedthrough the window glass.

* Bring along refreshments.Frequent stops for bathroom breaksand simply to stretch your legs areadviseable, but limit rest-stop fare

whenever possible. Not only do thesefoods tend to be unhealthy, they areoften expensive. Keep your road tripbudget down by packing healthy foodand drinks that you can enjoy on thego.

* Keep on top of your car's fuel level.Play it safe when gassing up the car. Onrural roads or stretches of country withwhich you are unfamiliar, you neverknow how far away filling stationsmight be from one another. Thatmeans you should take the opportunityto top off the gas tank whenever youget the chance. This way you alwayswill be confident you have enough gasto get to the next station. Don't riskcoasting into your destination onfumes, unless you want to arrive atyour destination hitched to a towtruck.

* Be wary of hitchhikers. Althoughhitchhikers are few and far betweennowadays, there is still the possibilityof coming across someone thumbingfor a ride on the side of the road. Donot pick up a stranger who ishitchhiking, no matter how reputablethe person may seem. If you comeacross someone who has broken down,

offer to call for help instead of allowingthe person into the car.

* Use the bathroom at every stop. You never know how few and farbetween restrooms will be. Unless theidea of a road-side pit stop is high onyour list of road trip excitement, play itsafe and use the restroom wheneverstopping. Few things can make astretch of road seem moreinterminable than the pressure of a fullbladder.

* Plan for sightseeing. Part of theenjoyment of a road trip is to actuallytake the scenic route and enjoy roadswhich you may have never traveledbefore. This is not a race and no awardswill be given out at the end for makinggood time. Therefore, slow down andenjoy the scenery. Isn't that why you'redriving, after all?

Road trips seem to be an essentialpart of the spring and summer season. They can be all the more fun and safewhen you heed a few road trip rules ofthe road.

Travel tips for a safe andsuccessful road trip

On road trips, bring along a friend so that you can share drivingresponsibilities and fend off fatigue.

To those who feel a vacation isn'tcomplete unless the family petcomes along, you're not alone.

The U.S. Travel Association says that 49percent of Americans feel the pet is justanother member of the family and 18percent of U.S. travelers plan to taketheir pets along the next time theytravel. Canada, Australia, New Zealandand the United States have softenedlaws regarding international travelwith a companion animal. With the PetPassport Scheme, or PETS, individualsmay travel freely with their pets tomember countries on approvedcarriers. Some procedures includecertification of rabies vaccination andthe animal's microchip or tattoonumber.Car trips are common forms of travelwith a companion animal in tow. Whilemany pets are easygoing, there aresome who are unaccustomed totraveling with their owners and mayeven balk at riding along. Acclimatingand protecting your pet for travel willrequire a little patience and somepointers.

SECURE THE PETJust as you would buckle up whenentering the car, so should you buckleup a pet. It is important to ensure theanimal is not a moving target aroundthe car should an accident occur. Notonly could you risk injury to the pet,but you also risk injury to yourself ifthe animal becomes a projectile.Even if an accident does not occur, ajittery pet, or one who is content tojump from back seat into the front, could prove a distraction while driving. He or she could also bump into thegear shift or get stuck under the gas orbrake pedal. It is much better to keepthe pet secured.Pets may travel in a well-ventilatedcarrier. Larger dogs may need to bebelted into the car with a special dogharness. There are also barrier screensand gates that can be installed, typically in SUVs, to restrict the pet.

ACCLIMATIONSome pets just do not enjoy beingplaced in a carrier or riding in a car. They may need some coaxing andpractice to become comfortable if a tripis planned. The ASPCA suggestsgetting the pet used to a longer trip bytaking a series of short trips first overthe course of a few days or weeks. Witheach trip, gradually increase time spentin the car.It may help to bring along a pet toy orblanket that is soothing to the animal,so he or she associates the car with asafe place, just like home.Even after several attempts toacclimate your pet to the idea of a cartrip, the animal may still not be happyabout the idea. Talk to a veterinarianabout other strategies or whether amild sedative could make the traveleasier.

SAFETY TIPSAlthough many pet owners are aware ofcertain dos and don'ts when it comes totraveling with a pet, many still engagein behavior that could be dangerous tothe animal. One of the common offenses is lettingthe pet ride with his or her headoutside of the window. While this mayseem like heaven to the dog or cat, thisputs the pet at risk of being injured byflying objects, including debris in theeyes. It can also increase the risk of theanimal falling out of the movingvehicle.Another mistake many people make isleaving the pet inside of a car -- evenfor a short duration of time. TheASPCAwarns that even with thewindows open, a parked car can rapidlyheat up and heatstroke can occur. Asimilar thing takes place in the winterwith the car getting much too cold. Ifyou anticipate having to make stops, besure to go where you can take the petout and along with you.

COMFORT AND CAREAn animal out of his or herenvironment or element could become

skittish. Try to keep a pet's feedingschedule as close to normal as possible. This will minimize the chances ofdiscomfort or even digestiveaggravation. Bring along bottled wateror tap water from home becausedrinking water from an unfamiliar areacould result in unwanted digestivedistress, which could proveuncomfortable for pet and owner alike. As an added precaution, you may wantto invest in rubberized floor liners andwaterproof seat covers, says the ASPCA.This helps if the animal gets carsick orhas an accident. Removable seat coverscan also prove advantageous forcollecting fur and keeping the interiorof the car less messy than need be.

IDENTIFICATIONIt is important to always carry properidentification for your pet, as well asdocumentation of vaccinations. Forthose who have not yet microchippedtheir companion animal, now may bethe time to do so. The microchip is avery small device implanted under theskin of the pet, usually by the scruff ofthe neck. It will transmit contactinformation when a specializedtransmitter is waved over themicrochip. There's also the old-fashioned methodof having your dog or cat collared withan ID tag. Using this in conjunctionwith a leash and harness will helpreduce the chances of losing your petwhile on the road.

Safe ways to take pets on the road

Stashing your toy-sized pooch in your purse is not a safe way totravel with a companion animal.

By Metro Creative ServicesThe economy might be slowly

recovering, but saving money isstill foremost on the minds ofmany people. Men and womenhave looked to save money in avariety of ways, including at thegas pump. While there’s littledrivers can do to reduce the costof a gallon of gas, there are waysthey can make the gas last a littlelonger.

• DON’T SPEED: Obeying thespeed limit might save your life, and it can also save you money.Typically, fuel economy decreasesrapidly as a car reaches andsurpasses 60 miles per hour.According to the U.S.Department of Safety, drivers canassume that each five miles perhour they drive more than 60,they are paying an additional$0.26 per gallon for gas.• EMPTY THE TRUNK: Though it

might be more convenient tokeep your golf clubs in the trunkof your car, extra andunnecessary cargo in a vehicle’strunk drastically reduces fueleconomy. An extra 100 pounds ina vehicle can reduce miles pergallon by as much as 2 percent,so keep a trunk free of items thataren’t absolutely necessary.

• STOP IDLING: Many people lettheir car idle for several minuteson cold mornings. But today’snewer vehicles don’t really needto idle to warm up, and idlingcan be very taxing on fueleconomy. Depending on the sizeof the car, idling can use betweena quarter to a half gallon of fuelper hour. If you still insist onletting the vehicle idle, a fewseconds of idling should beenough to warm the engine up.

• CRUISE ALONG: Embrace cruisecontrol on long drives without

lots of stopping and starting.Maintaining a constant speed, which a vehicle does whendrivers use cruise control, canhelp save fuel, as it’s less taxingon an engine to continue at onespeed than it is to constantlyswitch back and forth betweenhigh and low speeds.

• INFLATE THE TIRES: Poorlyinflated tires lower gas mileageand pose a safety hazard. TheDepartment of Energy notes thatproperly inflated tires canimprove gas mileage by as muchas 3 percent. Ideal tire pressure isdifferent for each vehicle, socheck your vehicle’s owner’smanual for recommended tirepressure. Some vehiclemanufacturers also include therecommended tire pressure onthe vehicle itself, be it in thedriver’s side door jamb or in thevehicle’s glove compartment.Tire pressure printed on the tire’s

sidewall might not be the idealtire inflation for your particularvehicle, so always adhere to themanufacturer’s recommendationinstead.

• GET WHAT YOU NEED: Drive thecar you need, not the car youwant. Drivers who truly need tosave money at the pump shouldconsider the type of vehiclethey’re driving, and whether it’sthe car they need or the car theywant. For instance, officeworkers who own a pickup truckbut don’t use it to haul itemsmight want to consider a smallervehicle that gets better gasmileage.

Improving fuel efficiency is agreat way for motorists to savemoney and reduce the expensesassociated with vehicleownership.

Get the most out of your gas tank with these tips

When it comes to taking care of theirvehicles, many motorists prefer tobe overly cautious. While that's

not necessarily a bad thing, there are timeswhen being too cautious can unnecessarilycost you money.Motor oil, and when to change that oil,

has long been a point of contention. Manydrivers grew up being told that motor oilshould be changed every 3,000 miles. However, that myth has been debunked formany of today's vehicles, which shouldcome with suggested intervals between oilchanges. According to Edmunds.com, in2010 the average interval for oil changeswas 7,800 miles. In addition to changing acar's motor oil less frequently, there areother things drivers should know aboutmotor oil.* Oil does not necessarily need to be

changed before a long trip. Taking a trip? While it's good to have your car examinedbefore embarking, if the recommended oilchange interval is not up, then you do notneed to preemptively change your oil. Sucha change is likely unnecessary and will notimprove the performance of your vehicleduring the trip.* Black oil does not necessitate a change.

Conventional wisdom once suggested if theoil on the dipstick is black then it needs tobe changed. But nowadays automotiveprofessionals are noting that black oil isdoing its job and different additives mightbe changing the oil's color, which meansthe oil doesn't need to be changed.

* You can use petroleum-based oil afterusing synthetic. Another longstandingmyth regarding motor oil was that onceyou use a synthetic motor oil instead of apetroleum-based oil you have to continueusing synthetic oil, which is often moreexpensive than more traditional motor oil,in order to avoid harming the vehicle. However, automotive professionals havenoted that these two types of oils are nowoften blended, meaning switching back andforth from one to the other is not likely tocause any damage to your vehicle. Just besure to use motor oil that meets thestandards set forth in your vehicle'sowner's manual.* Consider an earlier oil change after

buying a new vehicle. Sometimes a newvehicle will need an oil change after its first3,000 miles. However, this does not meanyour vehicle will need one every 3,000miles. According to BlackstoneLaboratories, who study motor oil, oilsamples taken from engines during theirinitial 3,000 miles of driving had elevatedmetal levels from the camshafts andpistons. These elevated levels will notnecessarily be harmful, but some automanufacturers recommend a shorterinitial interval just to be safe. Honda, however, includes an anti-wear additive intheir break-in oil and advises againstchanging their oil early. Consult yourowner's manual to determine if it's best tochange your oil after the initial 3,000 milesor to let it go until the recommendedinterval.

Distracted driving can bevery dangerous.Diverting one's

attention from the road formere seconds can haveserious, and potentially fatal, consequences.

The Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention havefound distracted driving killsmore than 15 people each daywhile injuring more than1,200. Any activity that takesattention away from driving isconsidered a distraction. Theseinclude taking your hands offthe wheel, daydreaming orengaging in any behavior thattakes your eyes off of the road.Certain activities are knowndistractions, andunderstanding which habitscan be dangerous and makingstrides to correct behaviorscan help save lives, preventinjuries and reduce accident-related expenses.

A study by the NationalHighway Traffic SafetyAdministration and theVirginia Tech TransportationInstitute indicates 80 percentof crashes and 65 percent ofnear-crashes in the UnitedStates involve some form ofdriver distraction. Thisdistraction took place a merethree seconds before thevehicle crash. An AllstateCanada marketing survey of1,605 Canadian adultsconducted between July 26and July 28 found that, although the vast majority of

Canadians thinks driving whiledistracted is unacceptable, nearly three out of fourCanadian drivers admits toengaging in a behavior that isconsidered a distraction. Thatis perhaps in part becausedrivers are not aware just howdistracting some the followingbehaviors truly are.

Using mobile phonesLeading the list of the topdistractions behind the wheelare mobile phones. Phonesnow do more than just placecalls, and drivers often cannotpull away from their phones, even when driving. Accordingto the California Departmentof Motor Vehicles, studies haveshown that drivingperformance is lowered andthe level of distraction ishigher for drivers who areheavily engaged in cell phoneconversations. The use of ahands-free device does notlower distraction levels. Thepercentage of vehicle crashesand near-crashes attributed todialing is nearly identical tothe number associated withtalking or listening.Accident rates have increasedthanks to texting, whichinvolves a person taking his orher hands and eyes off of theroad. A 2009 study by Car andDriver magazine compared thedangers of texting whiledriving to the effects of drivingdrunk to see which would bemore dangerous under thesame conditions. Measuringthe time it takes to brake afterbeing alerted by a red light to

stop, the reaction time wasrecorded when the driver waslegally drunk, reading an e-mail and sending a text.Texting easily elicited theslowest response time.Ironically, in January 2011,Texas man Chance Bothedrove off of a cliff after textingthat he had to stop texting orrisk dying in a car accident.Bothe survived but sustainedsignificant injuries and had tobe revived from death threetimes.

Moving ObjectsWhether there's a petbouncing in the front seat orchildren being boisterous inthe back, passengers and itemsmoving around the car aresignificant distractions.Turning around to look at thekids or to reach for a ball thatmay be rolling around on thefloor of the car can take aperson's eyes off the road. Ifsomething really is importantand needs to be addressed, it ismuch safer to pull over andtake care of it before gettingback on the road.

DaydreamingMany people will admit todaydreaming behind the wheelor looking at a person orobject outside of the car fortoo long. Perhaps they'rechecking out a house in a newneighborhood or thought theysaw someone they knew on thestreet corner. It can be easy toveer into the direction youreyes are focused, causing anaccident. In addition to trying

to stay focused on the road, some drivers prefer the help oflane departure warningsystems.

EatingThose who haven't quitemastered walking and chewinggum at the same time maywant to avoid eating whiledriving. The majority of foodsrequire a person's hands to betaken off of the wheel and theireyes to be diverted from theroad. Reaching in the backseat to share some French frieswith the kids is alsodistracting.Try to eat meals before gettingin the car. For those who mustsnack while en route, take amoment to pull over at a restarea and spend 10 minutessnacking there beforeresuming the trip.

ReadingGlancing at an advertisement, updating a Facebook status orreading a book are all activitiesthat should be avoided whendriving. Even pouring over atraffic map or consulting thedigital display of a GPS systemcan be distracting. When driving, attentionshould be placed on the task ofsafely getting from point A topoint B. All other activitiestaking place in the vehicle aredistractions that can end uprisking a person's life.
