Spring GuideAfter the house, don’t forget tospring clean the garden tooBEWARE of late frosts andkeep vulnerable plants andnew shoots protected at nightif frost is forecast. Don’t betempted to put out tender bed-ding until much later on in themonth, and even then be pre-pared to cover it if necessary.
Deadhead daffodils and nar-cissi. Give them a liquid feedor a sprinkling of bonemealand then let them die down.Don’t cut off the leaves as theyare necessary to replenish thebulb for next year. Keep dead-heading spring bedding to en-courage new flowers.
Continue with the springcleaning. Hoe your borders, getting rid of weeds beforethey take hold – annual weedssuch as bitter cress andgroundsel are enough of anightmare without allowingthem to go forth and multiplyby seeding.
If it’s dry, attack ground el-der and the like with systemicweed killer painted onto theleaves.
Mulch away while you canstill see what you are doingand before the herbaceousgrowth really takes off. Use
your own garden compost orleaf mould, well-rotted ma-nure, the contents of out-of-date grow bags or ready-madesoil conditioner.
Now the soil is warmingup and things are starting togrow, add general-purposefertiliser before covering withmulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patchand containers. If you have al-ready mulched, draw it back, tease the soil a little, add fer-tiliser and replace the mulch.
Carry on removing moss andweeds from paths, terracesand drives.
Clean and repair your gar-den tools, book the lawn mow-er in for a service and checkgarden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treatsheds, fences and trellis withwood preservative.
