The Button Factory is a unique, shared work space, home to the Waterloo Community Arts Centre. We provide two floors� of� authentic� and� creative� programming:� gallery� exhibitions, innovative art classes, workshops, professional� development� for� artists,� and� rehearsal� space.� We� pride� ourselves� on� maintaining� an� inclusive� environment,� open� to� artists� and� art� appreciators� from� all� backgrounds,� cultures� and� levels� of� experience.� Whether� you’re� an� emerging� or� experienced� artist,� a� beginner� or� simply� curious� there� is� something� for� everyone� here!

Over� the� past� year� our� membership� has� bloomed!� � This� spring� we� are� offering� an� array� of� programming� to� accommodate� everyone’s� interests.� All� your� favorites,� with� your� revered� instructors,� as� well� as� new� programming.� Over� 40� innovative� art� programs� and� workshops!

I� encourage� our� artists,� friends� and� members� to� come� out� to� the� Button� Factory� and� take� advantage� of� the� great� programs� we� offer.� � This� session,� we� have� new� � � � � � � � � � � � � � programming� for� teens,� children� and� adults.� � We� also� offer� our� programs� off� site� at� the� Waterloo� Recreation� Centre,� Waterloo� City� Hall,� Luther� Village� and� Globe� Studios.� Our� Artist� in� Residences,� Robert� Creighton� and� Olivia� Simpson� will� complete� their� residency� with� a� lecture� March� 28.� Don’t� miss� the� Procession� of� the� Species� Parade� on� April� 26� and� our� popular� Life� Drawing� Marathon� on� June� 28.� Raiders� of� the� Lost� Art� Summer� Camp� has� an� extended� run� from� June� 30� to� August� 29. Awaken� to� new� growth� in� ourselves� this� spring.� Come� out� and� explore,� create,� play� in� all� kinds� of� media-­visual,� digital,� and� literary,� attend� a� gallery� opening,� come� to� an� artist lecture, meet new members and become inspired by all the creative opportunities that Button Factory Artsoffers� this� season.�

REGISTRATION &

INFORMATIONSecondary and post-secondary students have the opportunity to take one

program or workshop per session for FREE! Two spaces will be available on selected�  courses�  on�  a�  first�  come,�  first�  served�  basis�  with�  valid�  student�  ID.

Payment�  for�  registra on�  and�  other�  goods�  can�  be�  made�  by�  cash,�  cheque,�  

MasterCard,�  Visa�  or�  Interac�  (debit).�  Post-­‐dated�  cheques�  are�  not�  accepted.�  We�  

know�  that�  mistakes�  happen,�  but�  it�  is�  necessary�  to�  charge�  a�  $20�  administra on�  

fee�  for�  any�  NSF�  cheque�  returned.�  Full�  payment�  is�  the�  only�  way�  to�  secure�  a�  spot�  

in�  a�  program.�  Fee�  assistance�  is�  available�  through�  the�  City�  of�  Waterloo�  Leisure�

Urban Sketching- #8

with Brenda MurraySunday Mar 30th - May 11th, (no class May 20th) 1-4pm (6 weeks)$50 members/ $58 non-membersThis is sketching on-location in a carnet de voyage using simply a pencil, pen/markers and, if desired, putting in colour with watercolour. During this workshop, we will meet at different locations each week (indoors and outdoors) capturing what we see from direct observation. Classes will begin with a half hour instruction followed by 2 hours of sketching and ending with another half hour debrief. You will learn to� tell� the� story� of� a� specific� time and place in a carnet de voyage (travel sketchbook) using easily transportable tools. We will explore different sketching styles, learn how to incorporate story and text, explore fonts and perspectives. Suitable for all skill levels. *Course will be held at

Transforming Art from Random Elements- #10with Amy FerrariWednesdays,Apr 2nd- 30th, 4:30-6:30pm (5 weeks)$125 members/ $145 non-membersThis is the sequel to “Creating art from Random Elements”. It is not required to have taken the previous class, at all! This is a “stand alone” class for learning the basic concepts in transformation of composite. Become familiar with acrylic paints and begin to overcome the fear, doubt and anxiety people have about creating art. The art anxiety is further relieved through a lot of silly, messy fun and with the power of information about expressive compositions. There is no right or wrong in this class; what’s most important is to ‘do’ as students are exposed to many ideas and techniques.

a three-dimensional object

out� of� wool� fibre� using� only� a� barbed needle and a few simple

techniques. You will try out these

techniques by creating a felted

figure.� Then� we� will� learn� to� turn� wool� fleece� into� felt� using� soap� and water. Learn how to mix

wool, integrate other materials,

and add a template to create a

seamless shape. You will leave

The Genius of Kandinsky/ Art without Subject- #32with Patti OlshinaWednesday, Apr. 23rd- May 28th, 6:30-8:30pm (6 weeks)$150 members/ $175 non-members(some supplies included)Part Art History, part mixed media with music, this course will be a comprehensive study of the philosophy and paintings of Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). Students will learn through reading, discussion and personal expression using a variety of dry and wet media to explore the elements of abstract art. Using a synesthetic approach (a perceptual condition of mixed sensations) Kandinsky combined music and colour to create “visual music”. If you are looking for a truly “hands-on” Art History exploration, this course is for you!

This program is geared towards to-be or currently registered teachers with-in the WRDSB and the WCDSB. Colour theory, value, harmony, principles, elements! @#%$ ! Not sure what it all means? Spend time with Christine, an expert with over 30 years teaching experience who will help guide you through lesson plans, materials, etc. Each week focuses on a new lesson including how to teach basic drawing, read a piece of art, think critically and more. Those with an interest in teaching art are also welcome!

This course is for the beginner as well as the accomplished printmaker. Study etching techniques from simple line etching to the varied possibilities of different grounds and aquatint, used singly and in combination. Along with etching, basic plate lithography will be explored. Litho techniques will be used to create prints as finished� works� themselves� and/or (for the more adventuresome participants), in combination with etched plates.

Currently she is an� Ontario� Certified� Teacher� and� teaches� visual� arts� to� high� school� students.� Angela’s� teaching� philosophy� is� to� encourage� young� artists� to� blossom,� build� self-­confidence� and� just� have� fun� while� exploring� different� mediums.� Angela’s� experience� includes� painting,� drawing,� sculpting,� photography,� &� video.

Albert Casson is a professional artist� with� over� 35� years� of� experience� as� a� fine� artist� and� 20� years� teaching� and� painting.� Albert� has� designed,� administered� and� taught� numerous� individual� and� group� art� courses� across� the� Region.� He� was� also� commissioned� to� produce� artwork� for� Kodak� Canada,� Panasonic,� The� Vancouver� Aquarium,� The� Calgary� Zoo,� Molson� Indy� &� Royal� City� Real� Estate.

Amaryah deGroot is a seamstress� and� textile� artist� who� loves� natural� fibres,� recycled� materials� and� communal� crafting.� Predominately� self-­taught,� she� has� completed� a� number� of� formal� courses� on� weaving,� felting� and� spinning� and� coordinated� a� community� sewing� space,� a� papermaking� studio� and� a� weaving� program.� Amaryah� has� her� Masters� in� Education� and� over� ten-­years-­experience� teaching� community� arts.� Since� 2005,� Amaryah� has� been� running� Sew� Oiseau,� a� home-­based� studio� where� she� designs� and� creates� clothing� for� women� and� children� and� teaches� specific� fibre� arts� techniques,� including� needle� felting,� wet� felting,� sewing,� Waldorf� dollmaking� and� weaving.

Amy Ferrari� achieved� a� degree� in� product� design,� which� has� provided� her� with� a� unique� and solid foundation for later pursuing� a� career� in� art.� During� 20� years� of� painting,� the� remainder� of� her� art� education� has� been� self-­taught,� allowing� her� to� develop� an� intuitive,� transformative� technique� with� art� education� has� been� self-­taught,� allowing� her� to� develop� an� intuitive,� transformative� technique� with� a� distinct,� organic� style.� amyferrariart.com

Atena Ganea is an artist and� educator� who� resides� in� Kitchener.� She� has� a� degree� in� Fine� Arts� and� has� taken� courses� at� both� the� University� of� Waterloo� and� Wilfrid� Laurier.� In� her� work,� Atena� incorporates� a� blend� of� traditional� European� style� and� contemporary� North� American� moderisnism.

Brenda Murray is a writer and� an� artist� and� combines� the� two� with� Urban� Sketching.� She� has� a� BA� and� an� MA� in� English� with� a� Fine� Arts� minor� from� the� University� of� Waterloo.� She� is� one� of� the� founders� of� the� KW� Urban� Sketchers,� a� chapter� of� the� international� organization,� Urban� Sketchers,� and has attended the 4th International� Urban� Sketcher� Symposium� in� Barcelona� July� 2013.� Brenda� has� exhibited� at� Gallery� M,� Cambridge,� and� at� The� People’s� Gallery,� Waterloo.� Using� storytelling� and� graphic� design� skills,� Brenda� creates� whiteboard� animators� and� explanatory� videos� for� her� corporate� clients.

INSTRUCTOR BIOSBonnie Steinberg, CSPWC, SCA, TWS - Bonnie is a popular instructor who has conducted workshops and classes in Ontario and the United States. A recipient of many awards. Bonnie has participated in numerous solo and group shows. Known for her flamboyant� and� dramatic� use� of� colour, her work has gained wide recognition. She is an elected member� of� the� Canadian� Society� of Painters in Watercolour, the Society of Canadian Artists and is� a� signature� member� of� the� Toronto Watercolour Society. Her paintings� may� be� found� in� public� and private collections.

Connie Melnik has lived and painted� in� the� Cambridge� area� for� over� 20� years.� Her� subject� matter ranges from still life and landscapes to portraiture and scenes of people and events. Possessing strong individual style,� Connie’s� work� can� be� viewed at the MacDonald Stewart Art Gallery in Guelph, Anastasia Gallery� in� Oakville,� Double� T� Gallery in Waterloo and Janis’ Art Workshop� in� Ojai,� California.

Christine Macleod is a local artist with over 30 years experience in the classroom. She is an art specialist who spent many of those years teaching extracurricular art. The last part of her career she taught ‘art from a cart’. She has written and taught very successful professional training courses about� visual� art� for� the� Waterloo� Region District School Board. She has also written and taught a series of children’s programs for� the� Cambridge� Library� Gallery� school art program.

Dimitra Maluzynsky is a freelance artist with a vast and unique� artist� background.� A� graduate� of� Lakehead� University� in Thunder Bay, she earned her Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring� in� painting,� along� with� four years of ceramics. She also attended� Haliburton� School� of� the� Arts� for� Glassblowing� and� Artist� Blacksmith� certificates.� She has studied painting in Italy and ceramics in China. Painting,� polymer� clay� jewellery,� crochet and metalwork are all the creative outlets Dimitra shows and works with currently.

Fabio Gasbarri started painting and drawing at an early age. A graduate of the Central Technological School in� Hamilton,� Ontario,� Fabio� has kept up his studio practice for over 30 years and has an extensive� exhibition� history� including in countries such as Spain and Cyprus.

George Wale is an artist, educator and curator. He studied visual art, philosophy (BA) and adult education (MEd). He has exhibited� his� artwork� around� southern Ontario since 1976. George teaches a variety of workshops and courses in the region. He was the Director of Programs at the Burlington Art Centre 1997 – 2013.Irina McCrossan completed her� arts� education� in� 2006,� but� began� her� artist� development� at the age of six at the Central Technical Arts School, in Toronto. Irina has approaches to teaching art that suit people of all ages� and� abilities.� She� specializes� � in Drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media. She has lots of fun ideas for developing artists.

INSTRUCTOR BIOSJenn Roden is a self taught artist who started painting, drawing and creating crafts at an early age. She especially enjoys working with acrylics and also uses her photography hobby to inspire her paintings. She is excited about sharing her passion and creativity for the arts by teaching children’s programs at the Button Factory this summer.

L.T. Dougherty has been working actively as an artist since she graduated from the Sculpture/Installation Program at OCAD in 1992. During those nearly twenty years her work has spanned numerous mediums including sculpture, painting and mixed media. Her work is in many permanent and private collections internationally.

Marshall Ward has taught life drawing for more than ten years, and is the recipient of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Award for Teaching Excellence 2007. He has exhibited his works throughout Southern Ontario, England and Japan, and has been published in International

Artist and Canadian House and

Home.

Michele Jones is a visual artist living and working in Cambridge Ontario since 2011. She graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1995 from the Fine Arts Painting and Drawing Program. She worked in Toronto Ontario for over 20 years as a Mural and Decorative Artist and was featured in many publications such as Canadian

House and Home, Style at Home,

and Canadian Family. She also appeared regularly on HGTV’s Room Service and Design Inc.

For the last few years she has focused more on putting brush to canvas and has participating in many juried and group shows at reputable galleries.

Nancy Peng studied math at the University of Waterloo but has since explored painting and silver jewelry design in Toronto and K-W. She has exhibited her creations at the Harbinger Gallery and the Button Factory. Her paintings depict varying perspectives and views of landscapes and of her community.

Nathan Leung is a graduate of the Theatre and Drama program at Sheridan College in Oakville, ON. He plays guitar in local band The Bosswich and teaches Lego classes and birthday parties at Toy Building Zone in St. Jacobs.

Patti Olshina studied at the School of Visual Arts in NYCand graduated from McGill University with a B. Ed in Art Education. Currently, she develops and teaches unique art programs in the KW area for seniors, adults and youth. Inspired by music, poetry and nature, Patti strives to facilitate self-discovery in the classroom, emphasizing the importance of the process in the creation of visual art.

Penny Grace started Tai Chi training at Cold Mountain Internal Arts in 1993 after spending 3 years with the Daoist Society of Canada. Penny has also taken numerous teacher training courses from the Canadian Tai Chi Federation.

INSTRUCTOR BIOSRobert Creighton is a Master Printmaker educated in Canada (McMaster University, BA) and the United Kingdom (Edinburgh College of Art, MFA). He has exhibited world-wide for over 30 years and is included in many private and public collections in North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia. His primary focus is a humanist-expressionist technique� involving� the� figure� in�

various environments and modes of interpretation. He is currently the Senior Artist-In-Residence at the Button Factory.

Sheila MacDonald Roberts informal painting lessons as a child from artist Adrian Dingle. She attended the Doon School of Art and was taught by F. H. Varley, A. J. Casson and others. Sheila� was� the� first� female�

student to win the T. Eaton Scholarship. She then spent a season at the Stratford Festival as a costume painter and won the Guthrie Award for costume break-down.

Supria Karmakar is a resident of Elora, Ontario. She is a member of a number of artist groups including the UpTown Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario & the Elora-Fergus Studio Tour, in Centre Wellington.

Terry Torra was born in Ontario and earned a Bachelor of Fine Art (honours) at the University of Western Ontario. He currently resides in Kitchener. Although he explores a wide variety of subject matter, Terry works primarily with landscape subjects exploring the various visual elements of our provinces’ diverse natural environment in an abstract style. He weaves the landscapes’ elements of texture, line and colours into diverse works in a variety of mediums. Currently, soft pastel is his passion. Terry is also an accomplished photographer. His work has been collected both privately and by corporations. He� is� currently� affiliated� with�

Art Dialogue Gallery, The Engine Gallery in Toronto and Art Allies in Kitchener.
