Remote Control for Digital Player The National Library Service (NLS) has released a remote control for the basic version of the digital talking book machine. The remote gives the basic player all the functionality of the advanced player. These remotes are available in limited numbers which necessitates they be distributed on an as-needed basis.

The remote measures approximately two and a quarter inches by four and a half inches by one inch and is powered by two user replaceable AA batteries. The 15 buttons are marked in Braille, raised so they can be easily distinguished, have different shapes, and are color coded. The remote comes with a receiver that plugs into the USB port on the side of the player behind the headphone jack. In addition to the standard functions of play/stop, volume, speed, and tone you can insert book marks, delete book marks, and move chapter by chapter in a book or article to article in a magazine. Because the remote receiver uses the USB port, the talking book machine must be powered up before you can use the remote.

Accessing Multiple Books From One CartridgeThe Digital Talking Book Machine contains software that allows it to read more than one book or magazine stored on a digital cartridge or USB flash drive. This is known as Bookshelf mode. Some of the digital cartridges mailed to patrons now have multiple books on a cartridge (generally for books in a series). Use of Bookshelf mode is needed to play these cartridges correctly. Use the following directions to access the Bookshelf and select which book you would like to read. To enter Bookshelf mode, hold down the green, square Play/Stop button at the front of your digital machine. After about five seconds you will hear a beep and the machine will announce “Bookshelf”. Then it will announce the name of the book or magazine that was most recently played. To move to another book or magazine, tap either the rewind (RW) or fast-forward (FF) buttons. (These are the triangular white buttons on either side of the Play/Stop button.) The player always announces the titles of the books. When you reach the book you want to hear, press the PLAY button and the book will begin playing.

BSBP Transition Program Takes Off at the Kalamazoo Air ZooBSBP students had a unique opportunity to spend a night “under the stars” at the Kalamazoo Aviation Museum. Students from across the state came together for this Career Exploration program learning about jobs in the aeronautical field. The Air Zoo provided students with a hands-on tour of the planes and exhibits highlighting the history of flight. Students built and launched a rocket as part of the experience.

This is just one of many Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) and programs BSBP is providing to students with visual impairments. The goal of Pre-ETS is to prepare students for life after school by allowing them to gain workplace readiness skills and explore their career interests. Students also have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience enhancing their knowledge, skills, and future employability. Pre-ETS services are available statewide to students with visual impairments age 14 to 26.For information on upcoming programs for students, visit the BSBP website:www.michigan.gov/bsbp or contact Shannon McVoy at 269-337-3449.

NewsNational Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) News Ad Campaign NLS’s national television and radio campaign launched Monday, February 26, on outlets including National Public Radio, the History Channel, and the Hallmark Channel. These commercials direct interested individuals to contact NLS via special toll-free numbers, and those calls are then forwarded to the appropriate library. Commercials will also direct interested viewers/listeners to two specially designated websites— www.loc.gov/NLSReadAgain and www.loc.gov/NLSRead. “The campaign is aimed at potential patrons and their friends, families, caregivers, medical professionals, and related audiences,” NLS director Karen Keninger says.

You’ll be able to find the various versions of the commercial on the NLS website or on YouTube at https://youtu.be/dnM_ZwMtC-8. You can also view and like a version of it on the BTBL Facebook page. As always, feel free to refer Michigan residents directly to the Regional BTBL in Lansing toll-free: 1-800-992-9012. We hope that you will share this news with your friends and family to help spread the word about NLS and BTBL!
