Greetings Tamworth Breeders and Enthusiasts! Now is a fantastic time to be involved with the Tamworth industry. The past year has brought record high prices as the top end of the Tamworth pigs produced last season found new homes. It was an electric moment as the “Record Breaker” boar was auctioned at Springfield. I would say it was a price we won’t see again, but that is nonsense. Each year the prices have increased as more and more people are begin-ning to realize the advantage of keeping Tamworth pigs. That demand drives the sale of more gilts each year as these excellent boars are put to work, creating more excitement with each litter born. Since our feed costs remain low due to the price of corn the prospects for profit for Tamworth breeders are looking bright. That is a good thing for the industry as a whole. Our Tamworth board has voted to make our Type Conference a joint conference with the Hereford breed this year. It is a progressive step to be sure and it may feel a little strange to start. Change is some-times difficult but if we are not willing to make changes we are soon left “in the dust”. Please join us at Wilmington, Ohio this year and see what you think. We believe this change will bring us added excite-ment, sales, and exposure to more buyers. Then let your board members know how you like this new format. We’re betting you will! Over and over again I hear how breeders are thrilled with the mothering ability of the females com-pared to other breeds. Never forget this breed is quite old and many very smart breeders have left their mark on prosperity by the work they have done within this breed. It is up to us to take advantage of their wisdom and breeding skills so that the Tamworth breed will continue to advance and retain their advan-tages for the future breeders. We have a diverse audience, from the pasture fed pork enthusiasts to the show pig industry. Don’t forget to take advantage of all sections of our market with your breeding and advertising experts. You might be pleasantly surprised with your efforts! Live Long and Prosper Tamworth Enthusiasts!(with apologies to Leonard Nimroy) Andy HoweTamworth President 574-581-1106 574-278-7146 [email protected]

A Note From the Secretary…
Thank you for making 2014 a great year to be a Tamworth breeder and enthusiast! The demand for Tamworths is strong, so please make sure you take the time to register your litters. It is cheaper and easier to register the pigs when they are young.
The 2015 National Tamworth Show and Sale will be held in combination with the National Hereford Show and Sale. I think this is a great opportunity to network with breeders and buyers. As we get closer to the event, look for emails and posting on the website for deadlines.
Brad, Lucas, Caleb, and I plan on attending and showing pigs at the Team Purebred event in Springfield. We will then be on the road showing at state fairs. Please plan ahead with your paperwork needs, as I will be out of the office during those times. You are welcome to call, text, or email me.
Have a safe and fantastic 2015!Kelley(574) [email protected]

TAMWORTH ORIGIN AND HISTORYThe Tamworth originated in Ireland where they were known as “Irish Grazers”, being given that name due to the fact that
they were such wonderful foragers. About 1812 Sir Robert Peel, being impressed with the characteristic of these hogs im-ported some of them to his estate at Tamworth, England. It is from this place they derived their name. An English authority, who calls it the “Mahogany” or “Grizzly” pig, says it was extensively bred in several of the midland counties of England early in the nineteenth century. When the droves were mainly kept in the woods and forests. They are not a composite breed, and are thought by many to be one of the oldest and purest breeds in Britain.
THE TAMWORTH BEFORE IMPROVEMENTThey were long of limb, long in the snout and flat in the rib. They were active, hardy, good rustlers, and very prolific, but
they were slow feeders and late in maturing.
THE IMPROVEMENT OF TAMWORTHSThis has been almost entirely effected through selection, judicious breeding, and management. It is now pretty generally
conceded that the blood of other breeds has not been used to any extent in the improvement of Tamworths. Tamworths have been used in developing other breeds in the United States.
WHEN IMPROVEMENT WAS EFFECTEDThey appear to have been improved to a considerable extent before the middle of the 19th Century,
as they were given First Honors at the Royal Agricultural Society’s Show when competing with large breeds as early as 1847. But subsequent to this period they sank into obscurity, and were only known in some local districts. About 1877 a demand grew up for more hogs of the bacon type, and breeders of Tamworths brought their favorites to the front in England.
THE FIRST TAMWORTHS IN THE UNITED STATESThe first Tamworths in the United States were those imported by Thomas Bennett of Rossville,Illinois
in 1882. In the following decade, Tamworths were also imported into Canada and the breed gradually became known in both countries. The Tamworth has two characteristics for which it was entitled to preeminence; i.e.; an unusual proportion of lean meat, and large litters of pigs; also that Tamworths will make as many pounds of gain, largely lean meat, from a given weight of feed as will hogs of any other breed. From these early imports, the Colorado agricultural College’s three year farm average for all sows was ten live pigs to a litter. A two-year old sow weighing 750 pounds had 18 live pigs at one farrowing, and a Tamworth at the Iowa Agricultural College raised 33 pigs in one year.
ORGANIZATIONTamworth Swine are protected by registration in Great Britain, the United States and Canada. The
American Tamworth Swine Record Association was organized in 1897.
