The Timeless Li-Du and Du-Li in the World of Tang Poetry

Classical Chinese poetry, long held in the highest esteem by members of the intelligentsia in China, reached its height during the Tang dynasty (618–907). li Bai (701–762) and Du Fu (712–770), famously known in world literature as li-Du, are among the greatest poets during the High Tang period in the mid-8th century, in whose works love, life, and politics are fully reflected. in a true sense of “zeitgeist,” two others emerged as towering poets of the late Tang period a century after li-Du are Du-li: Du Mu (803–852) and li shangyin (812–858). The poems by the 4 masters are all marked by hauntingly sensual images and a surpassing romanticism.

Given in honor of Dr. Paul Chih Meng, the second President of China institute, this 3-session course presents the lives of the 4 poets and some of their finest poems. The course is taught in english, with the poems being introduced in the original Chinese with pinyin and english translation.

Ben Wang is senior lecturer in Humanities and Chinese language at China institute and an award-winning translator.

Kosher Chinese: Living, Teaching, and Eating with China’s Other Billion

in september of 2005, the Peace Corps sent Michael levy to teach english in the heart of China’s heartland. His hosts in the city of Guiyang found additional uses for him: resident expert on Judaism, romantic adviser, and provincial basketball star, to name a few. His account of overcoming vast cultural differences to befriend his students and fellow teachers is by turns poignant and laugh-out-loud funny.

While reveling in the peculiarities of life in China’s interior, the author also discovered that the “other billion” (people living far from the coastal cities covered by the american media) have a complex relationship with both their own traditions and the rapid changes of modernization. lagging behind in China’s economic boom, they experience the darker side of “capitalism with Chinese characteristics,” daily facing the schizophrenia of conflicting ideologies.

Michael Levy is an educator, writer, and traveler, currently teaching at the avenues school in new york City. along with teaching at Guizhou University, he has served on the faculty of st. Paul’s school, saint ann’s, and Putney student Travel. While in the United states, levy does his best to keep kosher. While in China, he eats anything with four legs but the table.

River of Dust

on the windswept plains of northwestern China in 1910, Mongolian nomads swoop down upon an american missionary couple and kidnap their young child. in this story of retribution, these foreigners search for their lost son in a dangerous land that comes to haunt them and change not just what they believe but who they are.

River of Dust, Virginia Pye’s debut novel, was chosen by the independent Booksellers association as an indie next Pick for May. Pulitzer Prize-winning author, robert olen Butler, wrote that River of Dust, “is a remarkable novel in the ways that delight me the most: it has a compelling narrative voice, a dynamic story and a deep resonance into the universal human condition, all of which is inextricably bound together. This is a major work by a splendid writer.” Jung Chang, author of Wild swans, called River of Dust, “a vividly imagined and beautifully drawn picture of the life of Christian missionaries in China in the early 20th century.”

Pye’s award-winning short fiction has appeared in numerous literary magazines, including The North American Review, The Baltimore Review, and Tampa Review. in conjunction with the publication of River of Dust, her writing has appeared in The Huffington Post, The Nervous Breakdown and The Rumpus. she holds an MFa from sarah lawrence and has taught writing at new york University and The University of Pennsylvania. she lives in richmond, virginia, but was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is the daughter of prominent political scientist and sinologist, lucian W. Pye.

Tracing Multi-ethnic Influences in the Forbidden City: Han, Mongols, Manchus, & More

Beijing and its Forbidden City are an immediately recognizable testament to the grandeur and supremacy that imperial China exerted for centuries. What may not be readily evident is the multi-ethnic influence that shaped the Forbidden City, Beijing, and late imperial China. Teach China’s 2013 summer study Tour will explore places and sites that provide select K–12 educators the opportunity to learn more about the various cultures that are reflected in the city of Beijing and the Forbidden City. Destinations for this 16-day trip will include Pingyao, a World Heritage site in shaanxi Province that has retained Ming-Qing city walls, city layout, and Han architecture; Hohhot, the capital of inner Mongolia and the site of China’s largest annual naadam Festival, a celebration of traditional Mongolian culture; and shenyang, the first capital of the Manchus before they established the Qing Dynasty and conquered Beijing. The tour will culminate in a visit to the Forbidden City to reflect on how we can see the evidence of these cultures’ influence on the Forbidden City’s architecture, material culture, and history.

Summer Study in China

Built upon the success of past programs, the summer study in China program is hosting two different programs: an intensive language program in Beijing (SSC–Beijing) , and a language immersion and travel program travelling from Beijing to East China (SSC–East China). students will spend their summers exploring a wide variety of areas in China, continuing their Chinese language studies and investigating the country’s economical, cultural, historical and geological diversity.

SSC–Beijing offers high school students the opportunity to receive intensive language training within an immersed cultural environment. living for four weeks in the vibrant metropolis of Beijing, students will use their Chinese to communicate in daily life activities, improving both their fluency and pronunciation. Through rigorous small group daily language lessons, it is expected that they will acquire the equivalent of a full academic year of Chinese.

SSC–East China will combine a fully language immersion with a series of structured projects, excursions and field trips to different cities. This program will allow students to explore the country from every aspect, from the north to the south, from the urban areas to the scenic rural destinations, from the past to the present. Through this program students will understand the country’s people, culture and history more deeply than ever possible from a classroom.

Registration for both SSC programs is open now! if you have any further question regarding the application process, please contact Ms. Miaomiao Wang, resident Director of summer study in China, at [email protected] or 212-744-8181 x145.
