THE PURCELL SCHOOL the Purcell School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, and is Britain’s oldestspecialist school for talented young musicians. it is a co-educational boarding and dayschool, based in Hertfordshire. the School holds the uneSCo Mozart Gold Medal inrecognition of its unique contribution to music, education and international culture. theSchool’s Patron, HrH the Prince of Wales, accepted the award at a special ceremony atthe uneSCo headquarters in Paris.

An education at The Purcell School is available toeveryone. The aim of the School is to provide adynamic, exciting and supportive environment inwhich young musicians can flourish. The School isfunded largely by the Government's Music andDance Scheme which, along with its ownscholarship funds, ensures that all pupils join theSchool on the strength of their musical potentialirrespective of their parents' ability to pay.

The curriculum allows pupils to study a full range ofsubjects with a special emphasis on Music. AtGCSE level, pupils will typically study 8 subjects. AtAS, 3 or 4 subjects, and at A2, 2 or 3 subjects. Beingon the edge of London, the School takes advantageof all that the city has to offer, but enjoys a semi-rural environment. The proximity to London givesaccess to the eminent international musicians whocomprise the instrumental teaching faculty.

Most Purcell pupils go on to music college andsome take up places at Oxbridge or otheruniversities. We are very proud of our formerstudents who have enjoyed national orinternational success, including Nicholas Daniel, thefirst winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Yearcompetition, and the 2010 winner, Lara Ömeroğlu.

The School has exceptional facilities; state-of-the-art classrooms, a professional recording studio, superb practice rooms and a recital hall withexceptional acoustics.

Pupils are given outstanding opportunities forperformances. We hold lunchtime concerts everyweekday, and all pupils perform at these. Chambermusic and orchestral recitals take place regularly, and every year performances are given at theSouthbank Centre, St Albans Abbey and WigmoreHall. Visiting conductors have included Sir SimonRattle, Paul Daniel and John Rutter. In recent yearsmasterclasses have been given by Zakhar Bron,Andras Schiff and Natalia Gutman among others.

Entry to The Purcell School is by audition. Qualifyingpupils receive funding from the Government’sMusic and Dance Scheme whilst others aresupported by generous trusts and benefactors.
