IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE THAT WE WELCOME you to Performing Arts Perspectives 2019.

In its 23rd year it showcases the exemplary work being created by senior secondary students from the Public, Independent and Catholic education systems; and highlights the benefits of a strong focus and dedication to performing arts excellence within an education environment.

Incorporating dance, music and drama, Performing Arts Perspectives sets an extraordinary standard of excellence. The young women and men selected to perform are an indication of the diversity and exceptional talent being nurtured here in Western Australia.

The work created is a testament to the dedicated teachers whose passion for the performing arts is unwavering. Their commitment provides a creative and supportive environment for students to excel both on and off the stage. We would like to thank them for the important role they play in developing such talent.

The award winning Artistic Director, Emily McLean and choreographer

Amy Wiseman have produced a program that spans different art forms, styles and genres, ensuring that there is truly something for everyone.

We would like to congratulate the students and we look forward to following their careers as they will certainly hold important positions in performing arts companies, festivals, film, television, arts organisations or teaching institutions in years to come.

On behalf of the State Government we commend the organisers, teachers volunteers, families and sponsors for all their hard work in bringing together this celebration of student achievement.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

It is a privilege to work with such intelligent and creative young artists. Their performances are a testament to their rigorous work, creativity and bravery. Tonight is a wonderful opportunity for them to be able to showcase this in a beautiful venue to a large audience.

The programme is made up of a selection of the top performances from the ATAR examinations. The aim is to reflect the range of styles and genres found in each art form. It is a small glimpse into the many wonderful performances by the students of 2018.

The Arts enrich our lives, promote empathy and, as well as entertaining us, help us understand each other. It is exciting to see these students have embraced this and it is an important part of every young adult’s education.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES

First trying out acting in his year 9 high school production, Matt is a product of All Saints College and the Western Australian drama ATAR course. Whilst at school he developed his skills in class, in student films and in his school’s extracurricular stage productions of Romeo and Juliet, Cosi and Animal Farm. Last year, having completed his final WACE exams and achieving the WACE Subject Exhibition for the highest final mark in the drama course, Matt was selected to present his Original Solo Performance in the 2018 Performing Arts Perspectives Showcase. He closed the last year’s event with his self-written piece entitled Lonely Hearts Club; a surrealist exploration into the unhinged mind of the convicted murderer of John Lennon, Mark Chapman in the days leading up to his fateful act.

Within the last year Matt has continued to pursue his passion for acting, landing roles in various productions including most recently in the award winning 2019 Fringe Festival show; REST, presented by the WA Youth Theatre Company. Currently studying at the University of Western Australia, Matt hopes to undergo formal acting training after the completion of his undergraduate degree. Tonight, he is proud to MC the showcase and to introduce this year’s amazing acts.
