Testimony

“PCC definitely prepared me well by introducing me to software used in the industry,” he said. “When I came to Fox 50, I knew my way around the computers. I had excellent teachers who really knew their stuff. If I ran into a problem with a software program, they could always help me by showing me several ways to solve the problem. They made doing projects fun—both individual and group projects. I’ve used everything I learned at PCC.”

Film and Video ProductionYou don’t have to go to Hollywood to learn the Film Industry, Come to PCC!

North Carolina has a long distinguished film history that continues to thrive. The last 3 decades have seen notable films such as The Color Purple, The Last of the Mohicans, Dirty Dancing, and Days of Thunder. -- North Carolina Film Office

Piedmont Community College’s Film and Video Production Technology (FVPT) program prepares its students to work on feature films, television commercials, music videos, documentary films, Internet multimedia and other audio-visual media forms.

Graduates may find employment as entry-level crew and/or production assistants in feature and short films, commercials, and industrial, educational, and documentary productions.

PCC graduate in Super Bowl winning Super Bowl ad

Brian Oliver, a 2005 graduate of PCC’s Film and Video Production Technology program, appeared as the actor in one of the winning 2010 Super Bowl ads in Doritos annual advertising competition. The winning commercial featured Oliver on a park bench, a dog in a bark collar, and a humorous story in which the dog gets the bark collar on Oliver in order to get his bag of Doritos. The commercial won a substantial cash prize for the small North Carolina production com-pany that submitted the ad.“I wouldn’t have had this opportunity at all if not for PCC,” said Oliver. “I made so many industry contacts in Raleigh while I was a PCC student, and I’ve been able to use those contacts to support my-self since I graduated. And secondly, PCC’s program gave me such a well-rounded education that I have a firm foundation to build on. It really gave me a great overview of all areas of production.”

In addition to working as a film editor, set dresser, and actor, Oliver also enjoys writing, which has been his main pursuit of late and one he hopes to continue as a result of the commercial’s success. “This is just an amazing open door to show people what I can do and to springboard me into my real passion of storytelling,” he said.

Production program, call Michael Corbett at (336) 694-5707,

Blackboard Technical Help DeskA Help Desk is now available to students enrolled in courses that utilize Blackboard. Online Students may contact the Help Desk for assistance in the following ways:

• Telephone support with a certified Blackboard support representative. The phone number is 866-852-5588 and is available 24/7/365.

• Online chat with a certified Blackboard support representative. This feature is accessible through the Online Learning Support Center Knowledge Base Website (see next bullet) and is available 24/7/365.

• Online Learning Support Center Knowledge Base Website. This web-based forum provides articles about common issues reported, useful documentation, and work-arounds to software-related issues. Visit http://d2.parature.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=8277

Internet CoursesInternet courses require access to a computer capable of providing graphical access to the Inter-net. Once logged in, students are able to view their syllabus, course documents and assignments. The majority of tests are taken online. Some instructors, however, require that tests be taken on campus. Some courses require specific software. Educational discounts on software may be ob-tained through the PCC Bookstore.

• Completion of face-to-face or online orientation is required for new students. • Students will be given access to their course by 9 a.m. on the start date of the course.

• * Denotes courses with special requirements. Visit http://www2.piedmont.cc.nc.us/lrc/Distance_Learning/courseinfoSP11.htm

Hybrid CoursesHybrid courses blend traditional class meetings with the World Wide Web, email, and other Internet resources to provide opportunities for student-faculty and student-to-student interaction in per-son as well as online. Students access the web-based portion of the course through Blackboard. Requirements typically include class meetings once a week and access to a computer capable of providing graphical access to the Internet.

• Orientation is completed the first day of class.

• * Denotes courses with special requirements. Visit http://www2.piedmont.cc.nc.us/lrc/Distance_Learning/courseinfoSP11.htm

Focus on Diversity and Global Awareness PCC now has a Diversity and Global Awareness Committee to help the College integrate global elements into many different facets of College life for students, staff and faculty as well as members of both Person and Caswell counties. The committee’s mission is to “recognize diversity and promote global awareness across the curriculum by developing a mutual understanding, appreciation, and respect for age, race, gender, national origin, politics and cultural differences.” The members of the committee plan on being the driving force in organizing a series of events each year.

PCC’s attention to global awareness will continue in 2011 with several special events and celebrations. During the Spring 2011 semester, Dr. Dawn Langley will present a brown bag discussion focusing on her trip to Islamabad, Pakistan. She visited the country for two weeks in November 2010 and spent time with various educators in the country. In addition to talking about her experiences with faculty, staff and students at PCC, Dr. Langley will speak to various community groups.

The Learning Resources Center’s Read ‘N See Book Club is continuing the theme of African culture begun by the College’s StepN2theArtz event on Oct. 12. See their schedule of events elsewhere in this brochure.

The international theme for the Fall semester 2011 and Spring semester 2012 will focus on the Chinese culture. StepN2theArtZ-5 will feature Chinese actors, musicians and other performers, and PCC’s reading and literature students will read works written by Chinese authors or focusing on a Chinese theme.

Laboratory Technology and Biotechnology AAS DegreesPiedmont Community College now offers an AAS degree, diploma and certificate

in Laboratory Technology and Biotechnology.

PCC’s Laboratory Technology program prepares individuals for entry-level positions in a wide range of industries that perform laboratory testing of chemical, biological, and physical agents. Graduates qualify for employment opportunities in research, food processing, environmental monitoring, chemical production, and textile, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries.

The Biotechnology curriculum is designed to meet the increasing demands for skilled laboratory technicians in various fields of biological and chemical technology. Graduates may find employment

in various areas of industry and government, including research and development, manufacturing, sales, and customer service.

For more information, contact Randy Durren at [email protected] or (336) 599-1181, ext. 412 or Dr. Sherry Stewart at [email protected] or ext. 411 or visit www2.piedmontcc.edu/biotech/. Upon completion of the Biotechnology degree or Laboratory Technology degree, PCC has transfer agreements with four year institutions. Some of these four year institutions offer full scholarships.

Pre-Major in Engineering ProgramInstructors and administrators from PCC met with faculty and administrators from North Carolina State, East Carolina, UNC Greensboro, and other community colleges to collaborate on how to best prepare our students for transfer into state-wide engineering programs. PCC students currently take engineering classes here that transfer directly into programs at NCSU, ECU and UNCG. PCC’s new Engineering Pathways Initiative provides students with an improved pathway to an engineering career.

Today’s engineers work in many areas in the workforce including agriculture, chemistry, electronics, graphics, aeronautics, forensics, industry, and sound. Current salaries in the field range from $40K to over $100K.

For more information, contact Bill Hulette (instructor), [email protected], 336-599-1181 ext. 427 or Dr. Dawn Langley (Dean of General Education and Developmental Studies), [email protected], 336-599-1181, ext. 428.

SMARTHINKINGBeginning Spring Semester 2011, students enrolled at PCC will have online tutoring available through SMARTHINKING. Tutoring is available for math, writing, science, business, and nursing. Tutors are qualified faculty teaching in the area they are tutoring. Accessing SMARTHINKING will be done through Blackboard, PCC’s online course development software. Included in the writing tutoring is an online writing lab that assists with writing assignments. Further information is available at the Academic Success Center and the Learning Resources Center.
