Healing Hand, Reaching OutHealing Hands is the student organization at MECC for the Practical Nursing

(LPN) program, giving students leadership and team player experience, very much needed in today’s healthcare. Aside from developing pride and self-confidence in its members, Healing Hands promotes and builds awareness in the community.

Community projects have included gathering clothes and household supplies for a family whose home was lost to a fire and donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospitals for Children. A toy drive has been underway to provide toys to local elementary schools. Upcoming projects include purchasing and distributing personal supplies for residents of two local nursing homes in which the students have completed clinical hours, and purchasing supplies for ‘shoeboxes’ for military members overseas for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Nursing Simulation Lab provides high tech, realistic training

A new, state-of-the-art Nursing Simulation Laboratory is now available for students in the Virginia Appala-chian Tricollege Nursing Program (VATNP), a consortium of Mountain Empire Community College, Virginia Highlands Community College, and Southwest Virginia Community College.

According to Kathy Mitchell, Director of VATNP, the manikins appear to breathe, have beating hearts, and react to care and medication administered by the students. Students in the lab are provided an iPod with medical reference materials and a laptop for keeping electronic medical records. Faculty members observe and video-tape the students from a control booth and then meet with the students to review their experience.

This training complements the clinical training students receive at the hospitals. The laboratory, located on the Virginia Highland campus, was funded from the U. S. Health and Human Service Administration and the Virginia Tobacco Commission to integrate technology into the RN nursing program.

These December graduates will earn a Practical Nursing Certificate and be eligible to apply to take the Na-

tional Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN).

Members of the December 2011 gradu-ation class: (top, l to r) Helen Breed-ing, Patsy Blankenbeckler, Jacqualyn Skeen, Sasha Dotson, Megan Gibson, Brandi Deel, Kara Hamilton, (middle, l to r) Ashley Perry, Leandra Mc-Coy, Brittany Barnes, Julie Robbins, Heather Oakes, Michelle Vaughn, Mia Hampton, (bottom): Gyeong (Eric) Seo.

LPN program welcomes new faculty membersIf you stop by the Practical Nursing faculty office suite, you will feel

the energy as you walk through the door. Program Director Lena Whisen-hunt, who began with the program in 2010, has been joined by two new faculty members. Renee Stanley began teaching in January 2011, and Mitzi Jones came on board this past August. This is the first time the pro-gram has had three full-time faculty members.

Renee Stanley, Assistant Professor, received her Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing from MECC through the Virginia Appalachian Tri-College Nursing Program, her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Clinch Valley College, and her Master in Science degree in Nursing (Nurse Educator Path) from Old Dominion University. Previous experi-ence includes being a public health nurse for the Dickenson County Health Department and working in ICU at Mountain View Regional Hospital and the Dickenson County Medical Center. Stanley is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Mitzi Jones, Assistant Professor, received her Associate of Applied Sci-ence degree in Nursing from MECC through the Virginia Appalachian Tri-College Nursing Program and her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from King College. Prior to returning to MECC to teach in the LPN program, Jones worked for 15 years in the Emergency Room at Lee General Hospital. She was Nurse of the Year in 2004 and nominated again in 2011. Jones is certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Neonatal Life Support (NALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

The Practical Nursing program takes in two cohorts of students each year to begin the spring and fall semesters; in addition dual enrollment high school students from the Scott and Wise Career Centers meeting qualifications transition in during the summer. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the board test to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. The faculty say they cannot stress enough how important it is for the graduate to take the board exam as soon as possible following graduation.

Asked how they are finding MECC as they return from being former students to faculty positions, Stanley responded, “I love teaching, especially that moment with they start critically thinking and putting it all together.” For Jones, just two months on the job, she said, “Everyone is so helpful and pulling together for the students to be successful.”

For more information about this program, e-mail Lena Whisenhunt at [email protected], Renee Stanley at [email protected], or Mitzi Jones at [email protected].

Program Director Lena Whisenhunt and Assistant Professors Mitzi Jones and Renee Stanley are all smiles, saying, “Right now we have a 100 percent success rate for our graduates taking the NCLEX-PN exam to

become Licensed Practical Nurses.”

Essential MathIt was half way through the fall semester when

Chrissiana Fogarty finished her math class! How did that happen?

Chrissiana is enrolled in a new developmental math program at MECC where teachers are individualizing the students’ learning experiences. Each student begins at the level of math indicated by the placement test and completes only those units essential to success in his/her program-level math course. Students view videos and complete math les-sons on a computer, with teachers providing one-on-one as-sistance, as needed.

For Chrissiana, enrolled in the pre-LPN program and completing pre-requisites, this new approach to learning developmen-

tal math worked out great. “I like it,” she says. “I can work at my own pace and not have to wait for everyone else, I can work at home, and I finished my math for this semester so I now have more time for my other classes.”

______________________________________________________________________________

What is Essential math? The new Essential math program will replace the existing developmental courses in Basic Arithmetic, Algebra I and II with

nine MTE units, each one being one credit. Students will take only the content needed for success in their academic program’s required math course(s).

How will a student be placed in a unit?A placement and diagnostic test has been developed to determine the units needed for each program-level math.

What will a student enroll in who completed MTH 2 or 3 or received a “U” grade in MTH 2, 3, or 4 in the previous semester?

The college has developed a “crosswalk” chart to direct the student into the new MTE units. You will need to contact your advisor or a counselor in Student Services to be directed into the next math course that is needed. If you are currently in a math course, your instructor will discuss next semester with you.

How will these new MTE units/courses be different than the MTH 2, 3, and 4 courses taught in the past? The MTE courses will be taught in an “emporium” format, using on-line materials with faculty and tutor support in a math

lab setting.

Essential Math (MTE units, one credit each) has been designed by the Vir-ginia Community College System to allow students to take the units that are needed to be successful in their required program-lev-el math course(s).

DISABILITY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE An important issue for potential and current college students with disabilities is to understand the differences between disability rights laws in high school and college. In college, more responsibility is placed on the student. Check out the differences on MECC’s Disability Services website: www.mecc.edu/dept/services/disability.htm

John BledsoeDual Enrollment/Governor’s School

Coordinator

Bledsoe named Dual Enrollment/Governor’s School Coordinator Over 1,000 high school students are taking advantage of dual enrollment classes through Mountain Empire

Community College. Coordinating this effort across ten high schools and four career centers with the Norton, Lee, Scott, Wise and Dickenson schools systems is the focus of John Bledsoe, who became the Dual Enrollment/Governor’s School Coordinator in April.

“It is important to know and work with everyone,” says John as he describes his interactions with teachers, students, guidance counselors, principals, and school board office staff.

In addition to the dual enrollment program, Bledsoe also directs MECC’s summer Governor’s School program. According to Bledsoe, the 2011 Governor’s School was very successful, enrolling 54 students.

Previously, Bledsoe served as MECC’s Great Expectations coordinator, a program to assist foster youth transitioning to higher education. His efforts with this program, which began in 2009, made it one of the most successful in the state.

Local Criminal Justice Leaders graduate from leadership academy

Local criminal justice leaders from throughout Southwest Virginia made up the fifth graduating class from the Professional Leadership Academy, a partnership between the Southwest Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy in Bristol, Virginia and the Mountain Empire Community College Criminal Justice program.

The Professional Leadership Academy is the brainchild of Robert England, MECC Professor of Criminal Justice, and Doug Cooley, Director of the Bristol Academy. Training takes place as a six-month, cohort-based program that feeds into the corrections and law enforcement certificate programs at MECC. The correctional and law enforcement supervisors completed 120 hours of training, including a leadership project, before graduating from the Leadership Academy with their certificate. England states, “Good, quality leaders are graduating from the program.” Cooley agrees, “This is a step in the right direction to improving the professionalism of all of our criminal justice officers.”

For more information about the Professional Leadership Academy, contact England at (276) 523-7465 or [email protected].

The 2011 graduating class from the Professional Leadership Academy are (l to r): Russell Cyphers, Kermit Turner, Greg Hogston, James Blevins, Darren Jessee, Todd Tatum, William Hollinger, Ronney Aistrop, Eddie Phillips, Joseph Estep, Stephen Hamm, Chris Fields, and MECC Professor Robert England.

Model Rocketeers to compete in 2012 Team American Rocket Challenge

The Wise County-based Sky-Tech Aerospace & Rocketry (STAR) team of the National Association of Rocketry will compete with over 700 rocket teams in a national competition in the spring of 2012.

Team members are Brittany Barns of Norton, Heather Lee of Wise, Austin Stidham of Appalachia, Zachery Tate of Big Stone Gap and Hunter Page of Coeburn. The team is mentored by graduate students Giovanni Colberg and Yanina Colon and Wise County & Norton City Clerk of Circuit Court Jack Kennedy.

These students are enrolled in the Mountain Empire Community College GIS (Geographical Information Systems) Program, incorporating satellite remote sensing data with GIS data.

The certified high-powered model rocketeers were also recently recognized with the Delegate Terry Kilgore and WAXM Radio Leadership Award.

The national competition requires the best score in a precision rocket flight to an 800-foot altitude, staying aloft 47 seconds, carrying a payload of two raw hen eggonauts and returning them unbroken to the surface of the earth.

On January 26, 2012, regional students are scheduled to conduct a live audio-video two-way communication with the orbiting International Space Station astronauts and to learn more about the commercial cargo spacecraft launching to orbit and to the moon from the spaceport in Virginia.

STAR Team (L to R): Zachary Tate (Union High), Brittany Barnes (Central High), Austin Stidham (Union High), Heather Lee (Central High), and Hunter Page (Eastside High).
