The Barre’ acquisition brings together two of the top sheet metal fabricators in the North- east with combined experience of more than 70 years in metal fabrication solutions. The Preffered acquisition brings together two of the top sheet metal fabricators in Central Texas with combined experience of more than 50 years in metal fabrication solutions. This, along with previous acquisitions of Grentech and QuickTurn, has made EVS the largest, most well equipped sheet metal fabricator in Central Texas. By Bob Evans – General Manager - EVS TX Engineering Q & A Q: I have a sheet metal lamp housing that is made from cold-rolled steel and powder coated. It was mounted in an outdoor environ- ment near the ocean. After only a few months it has a significant amount of rust. What went wrong? A: To answer this question we must look closely at a number of factors. First, the design called for unplated cold-rolled steel as the material, with a finish callout of “black powder coat”. It is important to note that powder coatings are available in several different formulations (such as epoxy, polyes- ter, and urethane), with each one having different performance characteristics. Let’s assume that the powder chosen in this case indicated good tolerance to an outdoor setting. Any powder coat manufacturer will tell you that the key to success is pretreatment. The powder has no fighting chance if the surface is not properly prepared. We will also assume, then, that pretreatment was done in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. The key in this instance is that while the part was being mounted in its end use location, scratches and/or chips occurred that may have seemed benign at the time. Unfortunately this left an opportunity for the salt air to attack the bare steel. The rust then quickly spread beneath the powder coated finish. The recommended design change was to zinc plate the part prior to finish, being sure to indicate the proper type and service condition according to the govern- ing ASTM specification. In some instances pre-plated material such as galvanized steel could be utilized in order to reduce cost. As a job shop, EVS Metal sees a broad spectrum of parts from many industries. Because of that we are able to offer expertise based upon our years of experience. How can we be of assistance to you? Contact our Engineering department for more information. Manufacturing space has been increased and manufacturing capabilities have expanded with the addition of stamping. The NJ facility saw a 2,000 square foot increase in manufacturing space with the November 2005 completion of a second mezzanine. Further expansion into an adjacent building contributes another 15,000 square feet, bringing the total in NJ to 50,000. This added space is targeted for finished goods inventory as well as value added assembly and integration lines. It has also afforded us the opportunity to expand into stamping. We now have three mechanical stamping presses in NJ: 50, 110 and 150 ton USI presses all equipped with automatic levelers and coil feeds. The added presses coupled with our laser and punching capabilities and our experience with quick turn prototypes allow for a seamless transition in the growth of a part. We can help design (Solid Works, Pro-E, etc.) and prototype a part (Laser), then follow through Alpha and Beta (turret presses) to long-term high volume production (presses and hard tools) while always providing the best pricing for the quantity ordered. This allows our customers to remain with the same supplier/partner throughout the life of a product, thereby avoiding any learning curve with alternate sources. By Brent Frey – Director of Sales
