Hello again Pioneers, recently close to 30 of us celebrated an early St. Patrick’s Day at Spring Creek BBQ in
Mesquite. Good barbecue, good friends and a good time. You know our Pioneers have been gathering for
fellowship at these quarterly luncheons for many years – a tradition that we hope will continue for many years
to come. But the truth is we really need to have more attendees and we do not have contact with as many
members as we used to. Now our next social will be July 9 at the DAC. We couldn’t book July 4, but we’ll
still be in a festive red, white, and blue frame of mind. And we could use your help to spread the word among
other retiree friends, so put the date on your calendar and bring a guest or two with you. For auld lang syne,
my dear. As you know, the DAC is a lovely place to dine, great food, reasonable price, good friends, you
might win a drawing prize, and we have brand new professional entertainment for you on July 9. This is a
deal.
The K3 Sisters Band………….. Every member of the band is a multi-instrumentalist. Their shows are layered
with award-winning lead and harmony vocals of sisters Kaylen, Kelsey and Kris-
ten Kassab, and the result is a world-class, unforgettable, high-energy show that
transcends pop, indie, world, country, Texas and rock music genres.” They hail
from Mesquite, TX
Fellowship doesn’t stop when we retire and I know many of you meet with your “old groups” at times. Just
drop a favorite picture to Loretta ([email protected]) and she will try to get it in one if the newslet-
ters. Besides fellowship, Pioneers are proud of our community service. And if you are involved in communi-
ty service we would also like to hear from you ([email protected]).– what kind of service, pictures, etc.

Just for Grins
If You Bring Love Joseph Campbell At a certain moment in Nietzsche's life, the idea came to him of what he called 'the love of your fate.' Whatever your fate is, whatever the heck happens, you say, "This is what I need." It may look like a wreck, but go at it as though it were an opportunity, a challenge. If you bring love to that moment - not discouragement - you will find the strength is there. Any disaster that you can survive is an improvement in your character, your stature, and your life. What a privilege! This is when the spontaneity of your own nature will have a chance to flow. Then, when looking back at your life, you will see that the moments which seemed to be great failures followed by wreckage were the incidents that shaped the life you have now. You'll see that this is really true. Nothing can happen to you that is not positive. Even though it looks and feels at the moment like a negative crisis, it is not. ****************************************************************************************“The most significant decision I make each day is my choice of an attitude. When my attitudes are right there's no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme and no challenge too great." - Charles Swindoll ****************************************************************************************
Good People A Yiddish Folk Tale An old man sat outside the walls of a great city. When travelers approached, they would ask the old man, "What kind of people live in this city?" The old man would answer, "What kind of people live in the place where you came from?" If the travelers answered, "Only bad people live in the place where we came from," the old man would reply, "Continue on; you will find only bad people here." But if the travelers answered, "Good people live in the place where we came from," then the old man would say, "Enter, for here too, you will find only good people." ****************************************************************************************A young man named Nasreddin planted a flower garden, but when the flowers came up so did a great crop of dandelions among them. Wishing to eliminate the unwanted guests, Nasreddin consulted with gardeners near and far, but none of their solutions worked. Finally, Nasreddin traveled to the palace of the sheik to seek the wisdom of the royal gardener himself. But alas, Nasreddin had already tried all the methods the kind old man recommended to him for eradicating such troublesome weeds. Silently they sat together for a good long time. At last, the royal gardener looked at Nasreddin and said, "Well, then, the only thing I can suggest is that you learn to love them." ****************************************************************************************As Gandhi stepped aboard a train one day, one of his shoes slipped off and landed on the track. He was unable to retrieve it as the train was moving. To the amazement of his companions, Gandhi calmly took off his other shoe and threw it back along the track to land close to the first. Asked by a fellow passenger why he did so, Gandhi smiled. "The poor man who finds the shoes lying on the track," he replied, "will now have a pair he can use." ****************************************************************************************Sign at the Electric Company: "We would be delighted if you send in your payment on time. Bringing a giraffe into the world is a tall order. A baby giraffe falls 10 feet from its mother’s womb and usually lands on its back. Within seconds it rolls over and tucks its legs under its body. From this position it consid-ers the world for the first time and shakes off the last ves-tiges of the birthing fluid from its eyes and ears. Then the mother giraffe rudely introduces its offspring to the reality of life. In his book, “A View from the Zoo”, Gary Rich-mond describes how a newborn giraffe learns its first les-son. The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she positions herself directly over her calf. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the most unreasonable thing. She swings her long, pendu-lous leg outward and kicks her baby, so that it is sent sprawling head over heels. When it doesn’t get up, the violent process is repeated over and over again. The struggle to rise is momentous. As the baby calf grows tired, the mother kicks it again to stimulate its efforts. Fi-nally, the calf stands for the first time on its wobbly legs. Then the mother giraffe does the most remarkable thing. She kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to re-member how it got up. In the wild, baby giraffes must be able to get up as quickly as possible to stay with the herd, where there is safety. Lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild hunting dogs all enjoy young giraffes, and they’d get it too, if the mother didn’t teach her calf to get up quickly and get with it. The late Irving Stone understood this. He spent a lifetime studying greatness, writing novelized biographies of such men as Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sig-mund Freud, and Charles Darwin. Stone was once asked if he had found a thread that runs through the lives of all these exceptional people. He said, “I write about people who sometime in their life have a vision or dream of something that should be accomplished and they go to work. “They are beaten over the head, knocked down, vilified, and for years they get nowhere. But every time they’re knocked down they stand up. You cannot destroy these people. And at the end of their lives they’ve accom-plished some modest part of what they set out to do.”
