Scottishnessseems to be the

hot topic at the moment withnumerous debates onindependence. Whatever ourviews on this though is it notjust as important to care forone’s neighbour as we wouldlike to be cared for -irrespective of nationality? When we respect others asmuch as we respect ourselvesthen don’t we all win?

The story is about a Franciscan monk inAustralia assigned to be the guide and"gofer" to Mother Teresa when she visitedNew South Wales. He was thrilled andexcited. But during her visit, he becamefrustrated. Although he was constantlynear her, the friar never had theopportunity to say one word to MotherTeresa. There were always other peoplefor her to meet.

Finally, her tour was over and she was dueto fly to New Guinea. In desperation, hespoke to Mother Teresa: ‘If I pay my ownfare to New Guinea, can I sit next to youon the plane so I can talk to you and learnfrom you?’ Mother Teresa looked at him.‘You have enough money to pay airfare toNew Guinea?’ she asked.

‘Yes’, he replied eagerly. ‘Then give thatmoney to the poor,’ she said. ‘You'll learnmore from that than anything I can tellyou.’

Jesus had come on a Saturday morning tothe synagogue. The people there knewJesus – they had seen him grow from aninfant through childhood, his teenageyears, his years learning his father’s trade. And now here he is in front of them – thisman who some say is the long awaitedmessiah, or who some say is a great

preacher and teacher, and others whodismiss him as a rabble rousing zealot.Whoever they think he is – he is one ofthem. And he is there in their synagogue.

He is given the honour of reading thescriptures. A bulky scroll is brought to himand placed upon the lectern. Jesus, searching for a familiar text, unrolls it to aplace near the end of the scroll. In a voicestrong with anticipation, he reads aloudthese words from the prophet Isaiah:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,because he has chosen me to bring goodnews to the poor. He has sent me toproclaim liberty to the captives andrecovery of sight to the blind, to set freethe oppressed and announce that the timehas come when the Lord will save hispeople.”

Finished with this brief passage, Jesusrolls up the scroll, returns it to theattendant and takes his seat.

The people are all looking at himexpectantly. Jesus has just read to them adefining and startling text. Defining, as itsets out who he is and startling, as it setsout who he is.

In today’s jargon, he claims those ancient

prophetic words as his own personalmanifesto. The reason God’s Spirit camecrashing down on him at his baptism wasto empower him to do precisely this: bringgood news to the poor, release to thecaptives and recovery of sight to the blind;let all the oppressed go free; announce thetime is coming when God’s justice willreshape society.

And that manifesto is as relevant today asit was then. It continues to be ourmanifesto. The church does not exist tosimply gather on a Sunday morning andworship. It exists to continue the taskJesus set himself that Saturday morning,in a synagogue in his home town ofNazareth, in beautiful Galilee.

When we give to the poor, when wecampaign for justice, when we befriendthe addict, when we help our neighbour –we do what Jesus set out to do in hismanifesto. We still have work to do – weare Jesus’ hands today that will helpreshape our society.

Blessings.

Parliament Blog“ ”Whether it’s visiting one of our award-winningdairies like Connage Dairy, meeting with specialistproducers like the Really Garlicky Company, orchoosing the Supreme Champion at the GrantownShow, I am always keen to speak to and support ourlocal farmers and producers. As a Highland MP, I

am very proud of the high quality local goods that we produce here inInverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey. It is an important industry formany Highland communities – and it often does not get the credit it should. So, you will understand why I am also eager to ensure that our producersand farmers have the opportunity to continue their work and receive a fairdeal from retailers. As a role that I have been campaigning for, for manyyears, I was delighted to see a new grocery ombudsman appointed lastmonth. The new posting will ensure that retailers work with the groceryindustry, and not against. As part of the Office of Fair Trading, theadjudicator will have the power to fine offenders and name and shameretailers who are not playing by the rules. I look forward to hearing abouthow the role has helped the next time I meet with some of our localproducers. Danny Alexander MP

There are a great many people with a disability that work inScotland in supported businesses - which are enterprises wheremore than half the workforce have a disability. I have the job ofdeveloping new ways to provide a sustainable future for thissector. At the same time, we are also trying to deal with theenforced tendering of Remploy plants in Scotland - instead of, as

we would prefer, to find the best long term solutions, working with councils and theenterprise network through voluntary agreement. There are five plans in Stage two ofthe tender process - and I have visited them all and spoke with the staff. Harderworking individuals you would not find. It is a matter of deep regret that theWestminster Government is forcing the tendering of these businesses and terminatingthe financial support they have enjoyed. Here in the Highlands, a great many parentslook after adults who need care, and have special needs. There are some greatfacilities - like Cantraybridge College near Croy which I visited recently and providesday care for a great many young adults who benefit hugely as a result. As a society, Ithink it would be good to debate more often what we can do for the best for thoseadults with a disability. One area of work is that all public sector must providecontracts - work - for the supported sector to carry out. So far, 24 contracts have beenagreed, and I have met leaders of procurement from the NHS, Police and other publicservices. I am also arranging for private companies to help - and many are alreadydoing a lot behind the scenes. A team Scotland approach here will, I believe, deliver afairer deal for adults with a disability, and for adults with particular needs.

There is a growing trend to get married abroad in resorts which are well geared up for marriages. Civil Partnerships are also available in some countries where the law permits it, mainly in Canada, America and South Africa. Imagine combining the sand, sea and warm air of a Caribbean Island resort with its almost guaranteed weather rather than worrying whether the bride’s hair will get rained on at home. Photos and wedding cakes are the norm as are Champagne receptions and Wedding Dances if you take enough friends and family with you.

Indian Ocean Island resorts such the Maldives and Mauritius have resorts that conduct at least one wedding every day, often on the beach, and performed by a Marriage Officer, whose title varies upon the resort, ie in Australia it will be a Celebrant, in Barbados will be a Minister or Registrar, and in Cyprus it can be an Anglican Minister. It is important that the arrangements are made through proper channels to ensure the marriage ceremony, bought in the UK but performed abroad, is compatible with UK Law and recognised as a marriage at home.

Travel brochures specialising in Weddings and Honeymoons are now more popular than ever, one even extolling the virtues of the Minimoon and the Maximoon. A Minimoon is a romantic short escape after a wedding, giving you the chance to save up or take the time off at a later date. A Maximoon is for those with time to spare to indulge their ultimate travel fantasy, which for example might be discovering India and Nepal, Botswana in Style Safari, or a tailor-made Round the World trip.

The ultimate White Wedding can happen in a ski resort in Lapland. If you’re looking for somewhere with the wow-factor, the Snow Village in Kittila is a serious contender. The frozen piece of architecture is rebuilt every year using a thousand truckloads of snow, and counts a hotel, a bar and a chapel amongst its credentials.

In recent years the traditional Honeymoon can be enjoyed in a romantic city, in a quiet rural setting, in a fabulous hotel, or in a cottage in the mountains. Honeymoons can be tailored to any budget – after all you wouldn’t want to fall out over it after a few days of marriage would you…?

“ ”...it is appointed unto men

once to die, but after this the judgment Hebrews 9:27

When the party is over...

Published by www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish Charity SCO41290

There are many people, and you may be one of them, who believe that life should be one never ending party; friends to meet, places to go, and things to get and do, seeking constant amusement in the pursuit of happiness, needing non-stop activity to ll the emptiness inside, to ght the boredom that surrounds them.

Drugs, alcohol, immoral relationships, money and music are some of the most popular choices in this party called life. We don’t want to think about the fact the party will end. However there is an enemy to all this pleasure-seeking excitement. It is death. We all have an appointment with death and eternity.

You have a God-given eternal soul and the Bible makes it clear that you will spend eternity somewhere when the party is over. Where you will be in eternity may not matter to you right now. The thought of facing a sin-hating, Holy God or talk of His dear Son the Lord Jesus Christ are subjects you probably avoid at all costs.

The Lord is trying to reach you now, because once your “party” is over it will be too late.

We see in the Bible that we are all unclean in God’s sight because of our sins. You may not think that you are a hell-deserving sinner, but God is Holy and He hates sin. Sin will keep you from being with God in heaven for eternity and damn you to Hell, unless you receive God’s forgiveness for sin which is found only in His Son Jesus Christ. God’s word reveals that if you die in an unclean & unforgiven state, because of your own choice, you’ll go to hell with all the other people who refused God’s mercy.

You may think. “That’s okay - all my party friends will be there too!” Yes, sadly they will be there too if they too reject Christ, but the thick blackness of “outer darkness” will separate you from each other. It is a place of torment, never ending fear and punishment and you’ll be there on your own.

Right now you are without God in this world and have no hope, but in Christ Jesus you, who are far o, can be brought near by the blood of Christ; He can be your peace. You can know that when you die (and you will die) you will be in Heaven, not Hell.

Take a moment, please consider and under-stand God’s love for you in giving His Son, the Wonderful Lord Jesus Christ to die for your sin on The Cross of Calvary and then three days later to rise again from the dead. He can be your Saviour. You must call upon the name of the Lord, acknowl-edging and turning from your sins and trusting Him, and only Him, to save you.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16,18)

Most people understand that horses which are kept in some light work all winter, are less likely to become injured when the season for riding and competing begins. Keeping those muscles, tendons and joints toned, means that they have the capacity for coping with an increased workload as the season progresses. It isn't always practical or desirable to be exercising horses in the winter months and when horses first start hacking out or exercising in the new season, problems can first start to show up, which can lead to real problems later in the spring or summer. Vets would much rather deal with minor problems,

therefore hopefully preventing something major developing. Never be afraid to give your vet a call for advice, no matter how trivial you think the issue may be. Detecting problems early can often result in shorter recovery times. We wish you all a successful and injury free season.

Now is the time to have your lawns expertly prepared for the new growing season.Hollow Tine Aeration and Scarifying can done at this time of year - until late Spring.Hollow Tine AerationRemoves cores from the lawn to de-compact the soil.
