Among those returning to the starting lineup are senior second baseman Josie Schmitt, jun- ior shortstop Maddy Kalenberg, junior third baseman Erika Ribar, outfielders Rachel Rusten, Piper Davis and Ellie Lepel, as well as catcher Becca Green. Junior pitcher Mori- ah Maunu also returns to toe the rubber again this spring. “All those returning kids had good years last year,” Davis said. “We look to continue that and even get a little bit better.” Piper and junior Layne Herrmann could each see time at first base, a position left open by the graduation of Steph Klockmann after last season. Courtney Zaijcek and Ryley Oliver figure to also see time in right and left field. Lepel was one of the team’s top hitters with a .323 batting average in 2014. “Cole will be difficult to replace on the mound,” Schwirtz said. “(As will) Nolan’s bat at the plate.” Back for the Panthers this season are Tan- ner Grack and Bennett Bielke, two seniors who serve as co-captains this spring, as well as junior Teddy Petersen. They’re younger and deeper – and thereare more of them. The Glencoe-Silver Lakegirls track and field team has entered the2015 season with numbers in the upper 30s,leading to more hands on deck to competeacross a broad spectrum of events.

Youth will be served this season, as onlyfive seniors dot the roster.

The bulk of this year’s squad hails fromseventh to tenth grade. With that youth willcome a lot of adjusting as team members aremolded and shaped into roles that best servetheir talents as well as benefit the team as awhole.

“We’re going to be a work in progress asthe season goes,” coach Robb DeCorseysaid. “There’ll be changes in relay lineupsand look at girls running in events thatmaybe they don’t want to do, but will begently persuaded.”

The strength of the squad again lies in itssprinters. 100- and 200-meter dash specialistShelby Clouse returns for her junior cam-paign after narrowly missing out on a trip tostate last spring. Another junior, Emily Muet-zel, also returns to defend her conferencechampionship in the 400-yard dash, as wellas run both the 4x100- and 4x200-meter re-lays.

Freshman Zoe Christensen looks to leadthe Panthers in field events and hurdles. Sheregistered a throw of over 35 feet in the shotput and won the 100-meter hurdles in an ex-hibition event at the University of St.Thomas in St. Paul on March 31.

GSL also welcomes back junior TaylorNovak, as well as sophomores Erica Heckseland Maddie Monahan, who joined Clouse,Muetzel and Christensen as sectional quali-fiers from last season.

“Sprint events have traditionally been ourstrength,” DeCorsey said. “I think we’ll havemuch more depth in the distance events, which is something we haven’t normally hadin the past – that will help us.”

With the Panthers scheduled to begin theirseason on Thursday with a multi-team meetat Minnesota State University in Mankato,DeCorsey figured attainable end-of-seasongoals for the team to include a top-three con-ference finish and a run at a subsectionchampionship.

“We have several strong runners, we’redoing alright,” he said. “We just have to getin shape and get faster.”

GSL will compete on the road for the en-tire month of April. The team’s first homemeet is scheduled for May 7. The Panthersalso host conference and subsectional titlemeets on May 12 and 21, respectively.

“All of our varsity ath-letes have been through theups and downs of golf com-petition,” Eckhoff said. “Astrength that each has de-veloped is the ability tomaintain composure andkeep a positive attitude.Being able to focus in thepresent with each stroke issomething experienceshould give us.”

Eckhoff notes that theprogram is “going in theright direction.” In additionto strength at the varsitylevel, the team is enjoying abounty of numbers as ap-proximately 20 girls havesigned up to be a part of theteam from the seventh-grade level on up.

Those that have come outfor the team have enjoyed

the early spring, as the Pan-thers were able to take topractice outdoors at Glen-coe Country Club in themiddle of March – a far cryfrom the previous couple ofyears.

“I think the last two yearswere a nightmare for anyspring coach,” Eckhoff said.“It’s marvelous to be able tobe outside this early. Ithelps the motivation factoras well, it’s so much betterthan just hitting balls into anet in the gym.”

If conditions allow, GSLwill begin its season onThursday at Litchfield GolfCourse. The Panthers’ firsthome competition of thespring is slated for Monday,April 20 at GCC.

Buoyed by a program-best 46 members inninth- through 12th-grade, the Glencoe-SilverLake boys’ track and field team looks to con-tinue its strong tradition and build on suc-cesses of the past.

“We’ve been fortunate to have very goodtrack teams here,” coach Josh Metcalf said.“Kids keep coming out and our numbers keepimproving every year.”

The Panthers’ greatest strength lies in itsdistance runners, a group enhanced by thepresence of runners who earned a third-placefinish at the state cross-country running meetlast fall.

“We’ll be really strong in the distanceevents,” Metcalf said. “Hopefully, our sprint-ers come along and we’ll keep developingfield events to fill that out.”

Leading the way for the eight-man distancecrew are a pair of 2014 state participants inJac Chelman and Brandon Richter, both ofwhom return for their senior campaigns.

Chelman took ninth in the state 3200-meterrun, with Richter having competed in the pre-liminary round of the 800-meter run.

Filling out GSL’s strong distance contin-gent are seniors Garret Ardolf, Isaiah Herout,Garrett Ober, and Eric Kruschke, as well asjuniors Austin Schroepfer and MichaelSchaefer.

Seniors Kyle Beck, Gus Mendoza, PatrickKunkel and Zach Pierson are joined by juniorAaron Giesen to spearhead the Panthers’sprinters. Mitch Rothstein will be counted onin the field jumping events, while seniorChristpher Lemke and sophomore GraysonMarsh top the depth chart for the throwingevents.

Cold rain. That will be the main weather story thisweek as we get stuck in an active weather pattern. Inshort, weather happens when there’s a boundary betweenwarm and cold air and that’s definitely the case this weekwith warm air south-cold air north and us in between.

There’s at least a slight chance of rain pretty much allwork-week with decent amounts possible in some of theheavier-hit areas. Computer models have been hinting ata good chunk of our area getting 2-plus inches of rain inthe next week, so hopefully that holds true (I’ll save mytalk about drought for this week’s weather answer).

Highs will have a tough time getting out of the 40swith all of the clouds and rain with lows in the 30s. We’llbe fairly close to the rain-snow line a couple times duringthe forecast period, so it wouldn’t surprise me to seesome snowflakes mix in as well. Indications are project-ing some accumulating snow not far to our north, buthave no fear … even if that does move our way, this timeof year it melts very quickly.

The weekend forecast will trend things in the right di-rection with only scattered showers (slight chance) eachday and highs getting back into the 50s. The extendedforecast shows yet another storm early next week with afresh push of cool air. Have a great April showers week, everyone!

Answer to last week’s question (How are currentdrought conditions looking across the Upper Midwest?):Basically, all of Minnesota has been upgraded to a mod-erate drought with the Dakotas and Wisconsin also see-ing worsening conditions (from abnormally dry to mod-erate). This week will help greatly in slowing the droughtbut we’ll need to continue to see consistent rain through-out spring to dig ourselves out of this hole.

With the members of the Glencoe-SilverLake boys golf team looking to improve andrefine their game this season, one key victoryhas already been achieved – practicing outsidebefore the end of March.

With the snow having mostly receded by thefirst day of Spring, the Panthers were alreadygetting out and practicing on the links at Glen-coe Country Club. It’s a far cry from the lastfew seasons, when winter’s icy grip kept theteam hitting balls into a net inside the highschool gym.

The ability to be outside, developing a feelfor the game is also crucial for the youthfulPanthers squad.

“We didn’t get much time outside last year,”junior Dylan Schuth said. “It affected the team.We didn’t get much time to improve – it was apretty bad year.”

Schuth, the team’s de facto captain, is one of

four juniors on the squad this season, joiningTrevor Posusta, Mitchell Beneke, and TylerHausladen. The team has nine high schoolmembers, with nary a senior on the roster.

“The numbers are down a bit,” coach ChadKoenen admitted.

However, Koenen sees reasons for optimismthis season – and the favorable conditions canonly help the team develop.

“Last year was tough with a lot of hitting in-doors,” he said. “It’s extremely important to beout on grass, swinging the club – the realMcCoy.”

GSL is unlikely to challenge Wright CountyWest frontrunners Dassel-Cokato and Litch-field for conference honors, but Koenen be-lieves the Panthers can be competitive.

“We’ll hold our own, one stroke at a time,”he said. “I just want my guys to concentrateand focus on their own game. I’m looking for-ward to working with these young men.”

Following that, postseasongoals include qualifying asmany individuals as possiblefrom the subsectional meetinto the section champi-onship competition and ulti-mately, the state Class A

“Qualifying multiple indi-viduals as well as a relayteam for the state meetwould be a nice way to capoff the season.”

Meeker-McLeod-Sibley CommunityHealth Services, a joint powers board ofMeeker, McLeod and Sibley counties, formed in 1980 to provide public healthservices through the local county publichealth departments, is celebrating NationalPublic Health Week April 7-12.

What is public health? The CDC (Centers for Disease Control)

Foundation’s definition of public health isstated as the science of protecting and im-proving the health of families and communi-ties through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury preventionand detection and control of infectious dis-eases. Another definition by the WorldHealth Organization (WHO) refers to publichealth as all organized measures (whetherpublic or private) to prevent disease, pro-mote health and prolong life among the pop-ulation as a whole. Institute of Medicine de-fines public health as the responsibility offulfilling society’s interest in assuring condi-tions in which people can be healthy.

Perhaps it’s easiest to describe publichealth by a story. The story of moving up-stream really captures the essence of publichealth.

There are two people fishing downstream.Suddenly a person struggling for life comesdownstream. They rush in after the personand pull them to shore, saving a life. Sud-denly another person struggling for lifecomes downstream. Once again, they rush inand pull the person to shore, saving a life. This continues to happen all afternoon andthey become very tired pulling people toshore. Eventually they think “we need to goupstream and find out why so many peopleare falling in the stream.” When they go up-stream they find that the bridge is brokenand not safe, causing people to fall into thestream. Being only two people they ask forhelp from the community to make the bridgesafe and thereby preventing people fromfalling into the stream and the need to rescuethem downstream.

What does public health do?At the most basic level, local public health

departments are tasked to prevent, protectand promote the health of the public.

In Minnesota, local public health depart-ments are mandated to provide serviceswithin six areas of public health responsibil-ities. These six areas are:

• Assure an adequate local public healthinfrastructure.

• Promote healthy communities andhealthy behaviors.

• Prevent the spread of infectious disease. • Protect against environmental health

hazards. • Prepare for and respond to disasters, and

assist communities in recovery. • Assure the quality and accessibility of

health services. Example of local public health services

being provided in Meeker McLeod SibleyCommunity Health Services include:

• Healthy Communities Healthy Behav-iors: Staff provides home visits to familieswith young children to build strong, healthyfamilies in order to prevent child abuse andassure healthy child development.

• Environmental Health: Staff completeshealthy homes inspections to identify asthmatriggers and provide resources to eliminatethe triggers to prevent costly emergencyroom visits because of an asthma attack.

• Emergency Preparedness: Staff work torecruit and train volunteers so in the event ofany size emergency there is enough help tokeep the public safe.

• Infectious Disease: Provide vaccinationsto prevent the spread of diseases.

• Infrastructure: Public health departmentsin Minnesota develop quality improvementplans, strategic plans and community healthimprovement plans to address the health is-sues facing the communities.

Public health work in Meeker, McLeodand Sibley counties has always been a col-laborative effort with key partners in thecommunity. In 2013, the Meeker-McLeod-Sibley Healthy Communities Collaborative(which Meeker, McLeod Sibley CommunityHealth Services is a part of) convened alarge group of facilities, agencies and com-munity members to look at the needs ofMeeker, McLeod and Sibley County resi-dents. These meetings revealed that thethree counties are facing issues with mentalhealth services, obesity rates and preventionservices.

Work continues on the issues identified in2013 to improve access to mental healthservices, decrease obesity rates and offermore prevention and wellness servicesacross the three counties. Meeker-McLeod-Sibley Community Health Services contin-ues to celebrate their accomplishments andthe role public health and prevention playsin our communities during National PublicHealth Week.

Watch where you are going

Once spring hits, it is nice to take the bike out for a ride and enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful sights of God’s cre-ation.

When riding a bicycle, your head plays an important role. Your bike tends to go the way your head is pointed. If you arelooking at some beautiful scenery off to your right, you find yourself drifting that way, and if you’re not careful, you canquickly find yourself off the path. Safe riding requires keeping your eyes focused on where you are going.

As believers in Jesus, safely navigating our way through this life requires much the same thing—keeping our eyes fo-cused on what is ahead of us. There are plenty of distractions, countless things in this world that draw our attention andpull our focus toward them. Yes, financial difficulties, health problems, and relationship crises demand our attention withthe treat of even larger future problems if not dealt with immediately. The pleasures available to us in the world creat goodand satisfying feelings, but only for a little while.

The important thing is to keep our focus on what will last longer than anything in this world. The eternal life that Jesushas won by his death on the cross and his resurrection from the grave is the good and satisfying joy that will last forever.

We now are traveling along the path through this life. Yes, we have real responsibilities to fulfill. Yes, we encounter realproblems along the way. However, in the middle of every life situation, let us keep our focus on Jesus and the gift of eter-nal life that the has won for us.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the righthand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” — Colossians 3:1-2

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured thecross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” — Hebrews 12:2
