Thursday, October 13, 2011 Carrollton, Ohio FREE PRESS STANDARD C-3 SPORTS Minerva 21, Marlington 13 Minerva took over sole position of first place in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference with their huge 21-13 win over visiting Mar- lington last Friday night. The win improved the Lions to 7-0 for the year. The game was close all the way. The Lions led 14-7 going into the final period, but Marlington scored to cut the Minerva lead to 14-13 after the Dukes had their extra point attempt blocked by the Lions. With the pressure on the Lions, their offense drove down field and scored on a 1-yard run by running back Zach Wade with 2:39 left in the game. The Dukes had one last chance. They moved deep into Minerva ter- ritory, but turned the ball over to the Lions. Minerva quarterback Eli Maurer connected on 14-of-22 passes for 193 yards. Maurer threw a pair of touch- down aerials. The first went to Tyler Klimko for 38 yards and the second to Kyle Crum for 20 yards. Crum led Minerva receivers with five catches for 76 yards. For Marlington, Alden Hill led the powerful running game of the Dukes with 122 yards. Minerva held a 305-228 advan- tage in total yards. Malvern 26, Strasburg 21 Malvern senior quarterback Shawn Ball scored on a four-yard run late in the fourth quarter to give the Hornets a 26-21 Inter-Val- ley Conference win at Strasburg last Friday night. “This win ranks up there among the great Malvern wins over the years,” said Head Coach Dave Tucci. “Coming from behind like we did was special and facing a very good opponent on the road and facing adversity along the way. Our kids kept battling for 48 min- utes and got a well-deserved vic- tory. Our staff couldn’t be prouder of our kids for how they kept com- ing back after Strasburg’s three big plays. What I liked most was how physical we played against a very physical team, out-rushing them 319-190 and total yards of 504- 253.” Tucci also thought the Hornet defense played well. “We might have played our best game defensively to date,” Tucci said. “The only negative was the 84-yard touchdown run, but other than that, we dominated the line of scrimmage.” Ball was a one-man wrecking crew for the Hornets. He rushed 29 times for 257 yards, with 190 of those coming in the second half. He also scored on runs of 16 and 2 yards. Through the air, Ball connected on 11-of-21 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. Senior Travis Tucci led Hornet re- ceivers with five catches for 123 yards and a touchdown. For the Tigers, Ryan Froman scored on a 75-yard interception and Mitch Wilkinson scored on an 81-yard punt return. The win improved the Hornets to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the IVC. The Hornets will be at Tus- carawas Central Catholic Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. Conotton Valley 20, Paden City 0 The Rockets won their second game of the season last Saturday afternoon by defeating visiting Paden City 20-0. Taylor Bowdish threw for one score and caught a 12-yard pass from Colton Cottis for another. Brandon Bailey was on the re- ceiving end of a 25-yard scoring pass from Bowdish. The Rockets led 7-0 at halftime. Manny Garza scored a late touch- down for the Rockets on a 25-yard run. Garaway 49, Sandy Valley 14 Garaway jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in rolling over visiting Sandy Valley 49-14 last Friday night in Inter-Val- ley Conference action. Sandy Valley quarterback Sam Groff completed 15-of-20 passes for 135 yards, including a three- yard scoring pass to Frankie Motz. Tyler Walter had a huge game for Garaway. LOUISVILLE - It took a quarterbefore Louisville was able to im-pose its will over the visiting War-riors, but once they did it was allover.

At the 9:37 mark of the secondquarter the game was tied at 7-7,but the Leopards scored 36 unan-swered points and rolled over theWarriors 43-7 on homecomingnight at Louisville.

The loss dropped the Warriors to1-6 for the year and 0-4 in theNortheastern Buckeye Conference.

Louisville improved to 4-3 over-all and still has an outside chanceof sharing the NBC championship,but would need to win out and geta lot of help.

Minerva’s 21-13 win over Mar-lington gives the Lions a one gamelead over the Leopards and a twogame lead over Marlington. Goinginto the season Marlington andLouisville were favored to competefor the league championship.

The Warriors played a strongquarter and a half Friday night.

Senior quarterback Damon An-derson scored the Warriors’ onlytouchdown with 9:37 left in thesecond quarter and senior kickerBen Knotts added the point after.

Carrollton had two other oppor-tunities slip away. On two differentoccasions Carrollton had the balldeep in Louisville territory butcould not score. The Warriorsturned the ball over on downs onceand fumbled at another point.After those three possessions itwas all Louisville.

The Leopards’ Lucas Poyserscored on an 11-yard run with7:00 left in the first half and Je-remy McQuilkin added the two-point conversion for a 15-7 lead.

Louisville got on the board againwith 44-seconds before halftime onPoyser’s second touchdown run ofthe half from six-yards out. TheLeopards would add three moreTDs in the second half, while hold-ing the Warriors scoreless.

Leopards topple Warriors 43-7;Carrollton falls to 1-6 on season

The 2011 volleyball regular season willend this week for the Carrollton Lady War-riors.

The Warriors were to host Louisville Tues-day and end their regular season Thursdayby traveling to Salem.

At the end of play last week, the Lady War-riors record stood at 10-10 overall and 5-7in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference.

Last Tuesday, it took four games, but theLady Warriors defeated visiting Alliance 25-8, 25-13, 20-25 and 25-10.

Mackenzie Hess led the Warrior defensewith 10 kills and four blocks, while SamMeister recorded 14 digs. Sadie Myers hadnine points, including six aces and 12 as-sists.

For the Aviators, Hannah Malloy had sixkills, six points with two aces. Melody Dor-ward recorded two blocks and Paige Fegler13 digs and Samantha Jackson nine assists.

Last Thursday at Minerva, the Lions de-feated the Warriors in three games, 25-16,25-19 and 25-11.

Taylor Lowdermilk recorded four kills, 12digs and scored nine points, including threeaces. Hess had five assists for the Warriors.

Last Saturday, the Warriors traveled toLouisville and were defeated in three games,25-19, 25-16 and 25-13.

Lowdermilk led the defense with four killsand 18 digs. She was also the Warriors’ lead-ing server with six points, including a pairof aces. Hess recorded four assists.

The Carrollton boys golf teamextended their excellent seasonby placing second with a scoreof 318 at the Division I DistrictTournament last week at theValley View Golf Course at Lan-caster.

“It was a good day of golf forthe Warriors,” said Head CoachGary Cogan. “Even in the rainand wind we played pretty wellfor the conditions and to havethree scores in the 70’s wasquite an accomplishment.”

The Warriors, who finishedtheir regular season with a 17-2mark and 12-2 in the North-eastern Buckeye Conference,were to compete at the Division Iregional Tuesday at the AppleValley Golf Course at Mt. Ver-non. The last time the Warriorsqualified for the regional was2008.

Senior Tony Pozderac fired atournament-low 76, while ZachRiggins shot the third lowestround of 78. Cale Pozderac wasright there with a 79. Dan Tobinshot an 85 and Brady McClurea 93.

Tri-Valley finished one strokelower than the Warriors with a317. Marietta was third with a324.

Golfers finish second at district tournament

The Carrollton Lady Warriorsgolf team finished 12th at lastWednesday’s Division II district golftournament at the River GreenGolf Course in West Lafayette.

Carrollton finished with an over-all team score of 438.

Lael Shields was low for the War-riors with an 98. Sara Truman fol-lowed with a 108, AllisonGiannone a 113 and Liz Bormutha 119.

The top three teams and topthree individuals qualified for thisweekend’s state tournament inColumbus.

The Carroll County YMCA’sYouth Football League wrapped upits regular season last Sunday atFairless. The local league finishesits regular season with a combinedrecord of 15-3.

The Junior White team defeatedFairless by the score of 26-0 andthe Senior Black team defeatedFairless by the score of 22-14.

The Junior Black team was de-feated by the score of 18-14.

The high school boys soccerseason is coming to an end.

The Warriors were to endtheir regular season this weekwith road games at CantonSouth on Tuesday and atSteubenville on Thursday.

Carrollton will be taking partin the Division II sectional nextweek at Harding Stadium inSteubenville. They will play thewinner of the IndianCreek/Cambridge match nextWednesday at 8 p.m.

In action from last week, theWarriors played three matchesand lost all three.

Last Tuesday at Marlington,the Dukes rolled over the War-riors 11-2.

Dylan McLean accounted forboth of the Warrior goals.Gabriel Miller was creditedwith an assist.

Marlington outshot the War-riors in both shots taken 15-7and corner kicks 4-0.

Carrollton goalies AustinBregenzer and Matt Borlandcombined for seven saves.

Micah Hall had three goalsfor the Dukes. Mike McDermotthad five saves.

Last Thursday, the Warriorstraveled to Dover and were de-feated by the score of 5-1.

McLean scored the Warriorsonly goal with an assist fromBen Knotts.

Dover held a 9-3 advantagein shots taken and in cornerkicks 8-1.

Borland recorded six savesat goal.

Five different Dover playersscored for the Tornadoes.

Last Saturday, the Warriorswere on the road at Coshocton.Coshocton defeated Carrollton9-1. Knotts scored the War-riors’ only goal.

Coshocton outshot the War-riors 16-6. Bregenzer and Bor-land combined for 9 saves.

Evan Johnson and Ian Hart-ley each had two goals forCoshocton.
