Down 10-2 to Tarkington in the final set of Saturday’s semifinal matchup of the Huntsville tournament, the Lady Hornets found themselves on the brink of elimi- nation. After a timeout from head coach Debbie Hightower, the comeback began. Led by senior Taylor Cunningham, the Lady Hornets went on an eight-point run to tie the set at 10. From there it was smooth sailing, as the Huntsville girls went on to defeat Tarkington 25-20, 18-25, 25-23 and then took care of Willis 25-21, 25-16 to take home the tournament championship for the second consecutive season. The Lady Hornets also defeated Dayton 25-21, 25- 16 in their first game of the day. “We came from behind all the time last year,” Hightower said. “As a coach, you think we’d get into panic mode. On a sizzling Saturday morning with the heat index in the triple digits, Huntsville’s freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams did some good things, plus saw what need- ed improvement during their intrasquad scrimmage at Huntsville High School. “We just wanted to come out and get bet- ter to get to the next step,” Hornets senior running back Harold Johnson said. “We wanted to push forward to the next step. I think we did good. We’ll definitely be ready for the next scrimmage.” The varsity squad showed off its speed and athleticism from a variety of different sources.
