MELBOURNE GAMES REGISTRY LABELS

Reprinted from the Internationale Motivgruppen Olympiaden und sport bulletin.

In oux circular from February 1974 we printed an article about the registered mail to the Olympic Games in Rome in I960.

This article found great interest , because most of the collectors did not know about these registry labe ls . Also for the Olympic Games in Melbourne there were special registry labels , but most of the Olympic collectors did not know they exis ted.

Because of the Olympic Games in Melbourne they establ ished 16 different special post offices with a total of 54 special cancel la t ions .

The description of these special post offices show you in the special cancellat ions and registry labels the different sport locations and places of activity. Some special post offices used up to 8 (eight) different special cancel la t ions but only one registry label for that office.

The registry labels are a l l printed (with one exception) in the usual type of print and dark blue color. The special post office for the Olympics used a different type of registry label, they were noticeable because of their s ize and two color design. On these registry labels the " R " is printed in red.

The number of registered mail at each single post office is very difficult to asscer ta in .

The single registry labels have the following text:

1. Olympic Village VICTORIA

2. BALLARAT VILLAGE XVI Olympiad, Vic, Aust. (Abbildung l)

SIGN UP A NEW MEMBER TODAY!

tDditc/iiti/ A very special thanks to all those members who have sent in news

cl ippings, notes and covers pertaining to the Lake Placid Games. Due to the lack of time and the number of let ters that would have to be written, I am taking this method of thank each and everyone of you for thinking of your editor. Keep it up for the more information that is sent in the more I can print in JSP for all to read.

The recent two-part art icle "Tenn i s Ph i l a t e ly" by George H. Scheetz was one of our most eminently successful ar t icles in years . The response by members and non-members was simply tremendous! The response was so great in fact that the backlog for these two i s sues in nearly depleted.

Since this type of art icle is so popular I would like to see some members work on the following which (but not limited to) we have had requests for. Running stamps; wrestling stamps; gymnastics stamps & figure skating s tamps. Remember, all ar t ic les should be il lustrated and I am prepared to have photos made from your s tamps. Let me here from you if your thinking of doing this type (or any other) of ar t ic le .

1932 FDC AUCTION

Professor Earl Planty, 3602 N. W. 8th Avenue, Coral Springs, Florida 33065 concluded a mail sale on November 15, 1979 which included some Olympic lots of interest.

Professor Planty is retired and is selling his lifetime collection via mall sales. He specializes in United Sttates First Day Covers but his catalogs usually include some airmail covers of interest. 4^&

Planty is author of his famous Planty's Photo Encyclopedia of Cacheted F.D.C.s which is devoted to U. S. FDC's of the classic period, approximately 1923-1929 and the neo-classlc period 1934-1939. As yet a description of the period 1930-1933 has not come forth as the encyclopedia is being issued in installments. Readers interested in the installment dealing with the 1932 Olympic FDC's only should write FDC Publishing Co. Post Office Box 206, Stewartsville, New Jersey 08886.

The following cacheted US 1932 Olympic FDC's were sold in Planty's mail sale. Catalog numbers refer to those in handbook published by Sports Philatelists International, Postal History and Vignettes of the 1932 Olympic Games.

Handbook value is for cachet only from the 1976 handbook. From the information above, it appears that demand is mainly for printed cachets. Rubberstamp cachets are not particularly liked. Registered covers are seldom offered. Condition of covers is well above average—usually very fine or better, except where noted. The cover that realized $60 is, of course, a FDC for the 3« and 5* Olympic stamps but also has the Zt Olympic stamp.

"Angebot: Olymriade/Fussball-Weltmeisterscnaften/Sport N'r. 30-79" published by Otto Volk, Altert-Schweitzer-strasse }h, D-6120 Erbach/Odenwald, West Germany.

This is a German-language booklet of 60 pages inclu

ding 12 pages of very good Illustrations of better mater

iel. It is a sensitive retail price list offering a

wealth of specialist material in Olympics, soccer world

championships and sport. Listings include stamrs, co-.-ers,

rostmsrks, vignettes, etc..

Volk uses a mini-auction for the more difficult

material. Such lots are marked by a large black dot

and a "Mindestgebot" designation states the lowest

acceptable bid in DM. A review of past realizations shows

that some lots go for more than double the least accept

able bid, but many are sold at or modestly above such

prices.

As usual, Volk's lists are strongest in German mater

ial for 1936 and 1972 Olympics, both held in Germany.

Some offers include;

The US Postal Service has put out an Information Handbook and Ph i l a te l i c Souvenir Alhura for the 1960 Olympic 0aae3 at Lake Placid. The book Is soft bound, measures U^" x 6" and contains 36 pages. Besides giving one a l l \.\r l a t e s t postal r a t e s , I t contains a map of the Olympic f a c i l i t i e s & post offices and a chart for recording t i e 3 medals In the various events . There are photos of the styl ized "lympic cancels along with blank pages for one to place a stamp add get the assorted cancellations for each area . I t gives a rundown on a l l Olympic stamps and stationery l i s ted for the Geaes plus a l i s t of ore^sackaged Olvmpic Phi la te l ic Kit3 which s e l l between #2 and S10.

There is a very interest ing 6 page brochure put out by the Falk Corp. of Milwaukee, Wis. en t i t l ed "Sport Facts" . Issue #107 Is a very jood general history of the Olympic Games, I t s t echn ica l i t i e s and stamps.

Already there is appearing 2 different perforation va r i e t i e s for the jus t Issued 'JS Winter Olympic stamps. The Postal Service reports that ?05S of the stamps wil l be perforated by the "L" perforators (line perforations) & the other 105? by "on press" perforators . Tfc« perforations are easiJry ident if ied by the perfect crossing of the horizontal i ve r t i ca l perfs and the lack of perfs thru the outer selvage. Both var ie t i es are available from the Phi la te l ic Sales 3ranch In D.C. with the usual minimum order of 15.00.

Look a t the f i r s t Late Placid 'JS stamp, Scott #716..the faaoms downhill s k i e r — - t h e skis are crossed, body position i s wrong and a loose scarf is flying from the neck. Incidenti ly besides a l l t h i s , there was no downhill skiing event In the 1?32 Olympics...ch7?

For your Information, "Saggio" is I t a l i an for specimen and In Spanish I t Is "Miestra". "Ultramar" Is Spanish for foreign or beyond the seas, and is found often on covers.

Do you think that Greece Scott floU should be considered as a sport stamp?? Let ae have your opinions, and then I wil l t e l l you some facts about t h i s stamp that wi l l suprise you and make you real ize that i t rea l ly is t ru ly an Olympic staiqp

With a l l the p o l i t i c a l and ethnical shoutings concerning the I960 Olympic '3ames, you may just be seeing the s ta r t of the demise of the Games as we know then. Of course if th is happens, then we wil l have to see what the promoters will do . . . they wi l l e i ther make or break Olympic collect ing—It Is something for you to consider, believe me. What you now have In Olympic stamps may just suddenly become a rather valuable piece of p roper ty . . . . a re you with me77?

Presidents Message Our nominating committee of Len Eichorn, Clem Reiss, and Bill Smithett is

now functioning. Any suggestions should be rushed to them. It is a matter of record that the committee was appointed without the benefit of volunteers from the membership.

A variety of thanks is due individual members of SPI. Ed Epstein represented SPI at the recent INTERPEX in New York, manned an unexpected SP) booth at intervals when he was available, presented several seminars on Olympic collecting, and tried to encourage the foot-dragging ASDA to use the Olympic Games as a theme for the exhibit. Jce Sc' irmer edited the delighful special issue of Linn's in mid-January—no small task considering the reticence of our members to write and the wide variation in the writing styles of those who did contribute. A small group of members did come through with articles for our editor and, after considerable effort by Editor Joe, a very nice issue was put together. Unfortunately the publisher's personnel did not do a perfect job of reproduction, but such errors do occur. Therefore, we owe a vote of thanks to Linn's for making the opportunity available.

The current issue of Stamp Collector (April 19) contains a feature column by a staff writer on the literature of Olympic collecting. There is a nice boost for SPI near the end of the article. We thank Ms. Sente and SC for the publicity.

The last six months show a total of twenty-two new members and five reinstatements. This is encouraging; it may even balance the defections in the fall when annual dues should be paid. Whether this surge represents the Olympic year (such as it should), the special issue of Linn's, the efforts at INTERPEX, or the regular recruiting activities will probably never be known. More importantly, will the surge continue?

Psychologically it is always a question whether to lead or close with the less pleasant news. The officers and directors announce a one-dollar increase in dues; effective immediately. There should be no questions as to the cause; with inflation peaking (to date only) at 13.3 percent in 1979, no dues structure can remain static. Very probably most organizations will face additional increases in the future, especially if postal rates rise as hinted by Postmaster General Bolger. At any rate, the dues for SPI are now $6.00 per year, with a limit of two years' payment both permitted (as a service to the members) and encouraged (as a help to the Secretary-Treasurer), it is hard to imagine the extra work and expense which members pile on this hard-working officer by failing to renew promptly. Hense, this is an advance notice that renewals are due as of September 1st. Why not pay now and help all around?

Simultaneously, new life memberships have been eliminated. Of course life memberships paid in the past will be honored. The continued inflation combined with acturial problems prohibit the continuation of such offerings. Other, similar organizations are following the same path. The huge Ohio Education Association has just done away with all multi-year memberships. We regret the necessity of this action.

A note on change of addresses. It seems a certain number of members move but do not send in a change of address. We will no longer send out cards to these members requesting them to supply their new address. When a copy Of JSP is returned to the editor because the member has moved and not given his new address, his or her name will be removed from our mailing list!! If you do not receive several issues of JSP you will know what happened. You can always ask to have the issues you missed sent on to you. We would appreciate you sending some additional postage as we have to pay return postage to the editor and then additional postage to you. This JS three times the cost for not sending in your change of address.

Many thanks to those members who attended the Olympic Games at Lake Placid and who send brief notes and cards. A', least six members sent notes to the editor. The following report was sent in by Bob Wein of Gulfport, MS.

After many years of being a fan and collector of Olympics I finally got to Lake Placid. I was there for the last three days of the Games and it was great. Being at the US—Russia hockey game was an incrediable experienceand made the whole trip worthwhile. In fact everything after that was an anticlimax.

A few things about the USPS operation at the Games might be of interest to other SPI members.

( ') The USPS gave away a small booklet calledthe "1980 Winter Olympics Information Handbook and Philatelic Souvenir Album". In it vere 12 pages for the different cancellations, some venues were duplicated. I don't remember any publicity about this booklet. In order to get it complete you had to be there on the last day. The combination of those two facts might make the booklet complete with all the cancellations a very hot item.

(2) Each of the USPS locations had on hand cancellation devices for other venues. Anywhere from four to all nine. Although they would not give you date selection or the closing cancel they would give cancels for whatever devices they had on hand.

EDITOR'S NOTE: for your information, collectors and dealers who had large quantities of covers to be cancelled had them cancelled at ALBANY, NY for all 9 cancels and all dates including closing date.

(3) While in the P.O. I saw an infinite variety of material being cancelled. I did a little of that myself. The result is going to be a tremendous number of one of a kind philatelic souvenirs. Wu are all going to have to be very careful about what we buy and how much we spend for 1980 Lake Placid material.

1,4) Before the Games I sent offmaterial to every different P.O. box so I could get every available cancel. Needless to say the USPS did me in. I got back more than I sent to some and none that I sent to others. There are nine that I did not get back at all. I would like to trade duplicates with anyone who might be in the same boat as I. The oddest of all was that I got back two covers with cancellations that were not supposed to exist. B'-'th carried the Whiteface Mt. station cancellation dated Feb. 24th. No such animal was supposed to exist. Obviously, a good deal of material wound up in the wrong P.O. box. All I can say is HELP! I've got duplicates of most of the torch relay, home of the Olympics and venue cancels. I'll swap anybody for anything I don't have. Got a few FDC cancels for Gulfport, MS. Robert Wein, 104 Brentwood Blvd.. Gulfport, MS 39501-

The following passages from the nine stanza "Ode" best reflect de Coubertln's thoughts:

II. "0 Sport, you are beauty ! You-the architect of this house, the human body , which may become abject or sublime according as to whether it is defiled by base passions or cherished with wholesome endeavor. There can be no beauty without poise and proportion, -and you are the incomparable master of both, for you V"*j3 create harmony, you fill the movement with rhythm, you make strength gracious and you lend power to supple things.

DC "0 Sport, you are peace! You forge happy bonds between the peoples by drawing them together in reverence for strength which is controlled organized, and self-disciplined. Through you the young of ill the world learn to respect one another, and thus the diversity of national traits becomes a source of generous and peaceful emulation."

On September 2,1937,during a walk in Geneva's Lagran -

ge Park, Pierre de Coubertln died of heart failure. He is buried in Lausanne. Switzerland, where he lived, but

his heart was interred at Olympla.Greece in a marble monument commemorating the revival of the Olympic games. In de Coubertln's words, "Olympla, ... that ground belongs to me, to the one who has made its soul and deep consciousness live again.'.'

Formally, de Coubertln's "Ode To Sport" was in contention and won the first award for Fine Arts literature at the 1912 Olympic games. It may also be stated that his spirit of Olympic competition lies within the body of every true Olympic contestant.

Q-73 I have recently started a collection of The Ancient Olympic games on stamps. Information is needed about the Id Greek stamp (Scott 681) of the Aug.12 1960 set picturing the judges entering the stadium. Can you recommend a good reference for "The Ancient Olympic Games?"

Q - 74 I recently acquired for my Olympic collection a 1973 cover franked with a bilingual slogan meter

mark reading, "Zeiss/ Official Distance Measurment/ Carl Zeiss / 7082 Oberkochen , West Germany. Can anyone provide information?
