EPA regs to raise power bills EPA, Gulf Power short on details By AARON LITTLE 623-2120 [email protected] On May 27, the Environmental Protection Agency released its first proposed guidelines to cut carbon pollution from the nation’s power plants. According to the agency’s plans, by 2030, carbon emissions from the power sector will drop 30 percent to below 2005 levels; particle pollution, nitro- gen oxides and sulfur dioxide will drop 25 percent; and the nation will avoid up to 6,600 premature deaths, 150,000 asthma attacks in children and 490,000 missed work or school days. Natalie Smith, communication specialist with Gulf Power, origi- nally said it was too early to know if the changes would increase customers’ bills. However, she said after further review, “It’s a lot to wait on, but the new guide- lines probably will raise prices.” The EPA estimated its plan would cause energy bills to shrink roughly 8 percent. Smith said Gulf Power pro- duces 61 percent of its electric- ity from natural gas and 39 per- cent from coal. “These proposed guidelines would affect electric generation produced by both natural gas and coal since both produce carbon dioxide,” she said. “However, natural gas does produce less carbon dioxide than coal.” According to Gulf Power’s website, the company is work- ing on using new technologies to “gasify” coal, a process to vapor- ize coal without combustion. By PAMELA HOLT 623-2120 | @pamelaholtpg [email protected] The Emerald Sands Inn on U.S. 90 in Milton experienced a fire in one of its rooms on May 21. According to owner Scott Kaufmann, staff and ten- ants’ actions were able to alert authorities and avert further damage. Kaufmann said he is proud of the way the ten- ants and staff responded in negating a possible dan- gerous situation of a poten- tially larger fire. “We have people who live there and watch out for the area,” he said. “We had an immediate response. They stopped the fire, and the tenants called the front desk. They responded immediately.” Charlene Ford, manag- er of Emerald Sands Inn, said the fire was minimal in the room. “You could barely tell it was there,” she said. “The response was so fast.” Kaufmann and his staff are well known at United Way of Santa Rosa County. Milton Mayor Guy Thomp- son, chief executive officer UWSR, said Kaufmann was eager to help the commu- nity when UWSR needed a local hotel to bring emer- gency shelter monies to the county. “We needed a partner with UWSR to meet grant standards, which was $130,000 to provide emer- gency shelter assistance for people who needed short-term shelter, result- ing from both natural di- sasters and the economy,” he said. “Emerald Sands Inn partnered with us, and 49 families were helped.” By AARON LITTLE 623-2120 [email protected] Locals and those abroad know Florida as the canoe capital of the world. Celebrating 50 years togetherSpecial to the Press Gazette

Tom and Gloria Carter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 10, 2014, with a vow renewal and recep-tion at Pine Terrace Baptist Church’s Family Activities Building. They were married May 8, 1964 at the First Method-ist Church in Milton.

They have two daughters and sons-in-law, Heidi and Andy DeGuire and Keena and Travis Oran, all of Milton. Gloria and Tom enjoy their six grandchildren, Joey, Danny, Johnny and Abby DeGuire; Kinsley and Luke Oran.

Tom and Gloria met at Pensacola Junior College. During their 50 years to-gether, they have had many adventures traveling many of the 48 states, a bit of Canada, and excursions to several Eu-ropean countries and Mexico. They tent camped for 32 years, including two weeks in Switzerland, Germany, and France. The last 17 years, they have enjoyed trav-eling with their Airstream trailer. Tom and Gloria have enjoyed bus tours and Caribbean cruises. Over the years they have tried water skiing, snow skiing, hot air ballooning, snorkeling, swimming with the manatees and have hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon five times, once a two-day trek from the south rim to the north rim.

The anniversary celebration dubbed, “You’re still the one,” was scheduled to be outdoors at the home of Andy and Heidi De Guire, but because of inclem-ent weather, was at the church. The room was divided into an area for the vow re-newal with white chairs, a small stage decorated with palms and a white trellis featuring a gold and white tulle bow. The reception area was set up with round tables. Each table had a different center-piece using yellow roses and blue mums. Gold Hersey Kisses and gold “50” confetti were sprinkled on the white tablecloths. A special table for the honorees was covered with a gold table cloth and set formally with Heidi’s white gold edged China. The centerpiece was a bouquet of yellow roses arranged in a Depression glass bowl passed down from Gloria’s mother. A memory table held a framed photograph of Tom and Gloria made on their wedding day, a framed photo of Tom’s grandparents on their 50th with an invitation and a napkin, and a framed photo taken on Gloria’s parents 50th and their cake topper. Also on the table were scrapbooks of Tom and Gloria’s travels and their original wedding book. A gift table held a plaque made by grandson, Joey DeGuire, “You’re still the one,” and

a hand crocheted afghan made by David Raisler. Among other gifts was a special bath towel and mat set embroidered with “HOLIDAY INN, MAY 8, 1964” (where they stayed on their honeymoon) given by daughters and sons, Heidi, Keena, Andy and Travis.

Gloria and Tom came down the aisle to the song “Built on Amazing Grace.” Each of the six grandchildren gave Gramma a long stemmed yellow rose, as she and Papa came in. Then they took their places as witnesses. Andy gave a brief testimony about the ups and downs of the past 50 years and how God has brought Tom and Gloria thru. Most recently were the miracles of Heidi’s survival from a brain aneurysm (with a one percent chance of survival), and Tom’s recovery from stage IV bladder cancer. The daughters read from the love chapter. The vows were ex-changed and Gloria and Tom walked out to “You’re still the one.”

Tom wore a grey suit with a yellow rose boutonnière. Gloria wore a floor length dress featuring a white bodice with a scoop neckline embellished with gold and silver crystals. The champagne skirt was tiers of ruffles with the same embellish-ment at the waist. She carried the Bible she carried in their wedding with yellow sweetheart roses and babies breathe ar-ranged and tied with a champagne rib-bon and two gold hearts. The same Bible has been carried by the daughters, three nieces and Gloria’s mother in her 50-year vow renewal. The granddaughters wore blue sequined dresses and a crown of baby’s breath. The older grandsons wore light blue shirts and dark pants. The youngest grandson wore a

blue-stripped vest and pants.During the meal, a slide show of Tom

and Gloria’s life and adventures played with background music with songs from the past including “If I had to do it all over again, I’d do it with you,” “I still get that honeymoon feeling,” “You’re still the one,” and the song that helped Tom thru his chemo, “Feelin’ fine.”

Tom and Gloria own and operate Carter Photography, a wedding and por-trait business serving Milton and sur-rounding areas. Tom won many awards through the Professional Photographers of America and the Florida Professional Photographers and served as president for the local guild. He was also employed by the Press Gazette and the University of West Florida as staff photographer. Tom also served 3 years in the U.S. Army as an Army photographer in Europe and Arizona.

“Wow, there’s fraud, inefficiency and dishonesty at the VA hospitals?” said no one — except Democrats in D.C.

Not only did Obama feign surprise, other Democrats said they were “shocked” by the matter. It is yet to be determined if Nancy Pelosi was shocked by the allegations, since her face always looks shocked.

Once again, Obama said he only heard about this scandal through the media. Perhaps he was too busy not knowing about the IRS scandal, Benghazi, NSA spying, wiretapping of media opponents, the GSA, the ObamaCare website debacle and Secret Service hooker scandals. There seem to be no limits to what Obama does not know. He holds press conferences, not to tell us things, but to find out what is going on in his administration. He was briefed by Entertainment Tonight on the Kanye

West/Kim Kardashian marriage; he seems to be up to speed on that.

There are two very simple reasons the VA is a dysfunctional bureaucratic mess. One, it is a government-run. Two, it is now 80 pervent public sector unionized. These are people who come to work each day only concerned about one thing: what they are

going to have for lunch. There is no profit motive, no risk of getting fired and little accountability. The slower they work, the more money they get. Veterans die, but they keep their

jobs. At least 188 VA

employees (85 nurses), some making six-figure salaries, spend 100 percent of their time working on union matters. This “official time” is only what they report, and what we pay for. They use it politicking for Democrats. Unions should pay them, not taxpayers.

The VA is run for union workers, not

patients. They don’t even remind vets of their appointments, thus no-show rates are as high as 45 percent. This means less work for union members.

The union mentality and ambivalence of a big government bureaucracy explains the awful care our veterans have received. More importantly, it’s a precursor to the care we all will be getting under ObamaCare in 10 years.

We owe vets medical care and a burial. Maybe Obama plans to combine the two to save money; he thinks he can bury vets in paperwork.

Half of veterans are older than age 65 and get Medicare. Why not give the rest of the vets vouchers for care from local hospitals and private physicians? Why own 971 VA hospitals and clinics and incur overhead costs all over the country? For both price and quality, private medical competition serves consumers better than any government ever has. Sell the hospitals and let our vets get good care

near where they live. The bigger picture is

why we have so many vets needing help anyway. Fewer wars of choice would be a nice start to a solution. We were about out of the woods with the Vietnam-era vets aging, and then we went and invaded two countries we didn’t need to.

Obama’s feckless and naïve foreign policy might pay off in one regard. He seems only to want to scramble U.S. jets when he hears what might have been a racial slur by a Republican.

His answer to the 300 African Christian girls taken captive, to be sold into sex slavery for $12 apiece, is to Tweet about it. As you might imagine, a backcountry Muslim extremist group like Boko Haram really fears snarky social media comments. So that’s worked well. But if it does not get the girls freed, I hear Obama might de-friend the group on Facebook. If that doesn’t work, he might instruct the CIA to post catty remarks about its leader on Yik Yak or, as he call it,

the “nuclear option.”Obama even goes

around Congress and exchanges five high-ranking Taliban commanders for one of our guys. Obama can’t do anything without running a 5 to 1 deficit, or that might just be the new Common Core math he was using. Perhaps to get the great medical care they deserve, our VA heroes can turn themselves in as Afghan Taliban fighters and get top-notch medical care — and a $500,000 soccer field — at Guantanamo Bay.

This VA scandal is so bad that Obama has instructed his media to divert their headlines to the failings of ObamaCare. Do you think the media will draw the obvious parallels? I’ll give you five to one they don’t.

MonDaY 7:07 a.M.Yes, this is Nita. I’m very

disgusted about the transportation for the elderly here in Milton. It’s time to change out the commissioners and make sure that these people are taken care of. I’m on a fixed income. I cannot afford a cab to go get my ID renewed on the base. It cost an arm and a leg. I’m lucky to be buying the food I do, and have a few dollars left over for the rest of the month. It’s very disgusting.

MonDaY 7:36 P.M.Yeah, this is Bobby. I just heard

on the radio an advertisement for Select Service reminding men when they turn 18 it’s the law they have sign up so they can be drafted by the military. Why is it women don’t have to sign up? They’re not subject to the draft yet they take up a lot of slots in the military that can be filled by men and you can’t discriminate against them. They can get in basically any part of the military that a man can. It just seems a little one-sided to me. It’s the law that a man has to sign up but a woman doesn’t. Thank you.

tUESDaY 7:12 a.M.Yeah, this is Mary, a concerned

senior citizen. I just watched an interesting thing about Obama letting this Muslim soldier out from Afghanistan, trading terrorists for him, letting him go free. He’s been in there long enough that he’s

indoctrinated. Now he’s coming back and all of his fellow soldiers are saying he’s a turncoat or a traitor. He went and left his group voluntarily to be captured. That doesn’t sound like transparency to me because Obama didn’t let anybody know he was going to do this. I wonder what he’s got up his sleeve next.

tUESDaY 6:45 P.M.Hey, this is Dennis. I’m pretty

sure Gulf Power uses coal to make our electricity. Once EPA fully implements their plan our price for electricity will go up. Big business will pass their increased costs along to whom? You guessed it, us. The things we buy will go up in price. Thanks a lot, EPA.

tUESDaY 8:22 P.M.Hello, this is Marian. I’m

wondering if you are going to have a hurricane tracking map in the Press Gazette this year. I enjoy them very much. Thank you.

wEDnESDaY 9:54 a.M.Why is Pensacola the capital of

Florida in abortion? People come to get abortions from all over the world and they say they’re not from Pensacola but they come from where they cannot have abortions. That should not be allowed. The money spent for abortions should be given to the poor and the homeless, not to

these people to kill babies. This is Maria. Thank you.

wEDnESDaY 5:06 P.M.Yes, what a great loss for the

Florian family in Pensacola. I knew Father Licari, the one who built the church around Christmas, the church in Bellview. This is very sad. I was just surprised they didn’t know about this. I know I don’t swim and that’s why I never go close to the black water or the pink water because I’m really scared. I’d probably get my feet wet from the black water. They need to have signs because it’s dangerous, the current, it’s too deep, even for the people that know how to swim. I think there should be signs everywhere. That was a very sad loss. Please do something about it. There have been too many tragedies this past week, the two little boys. It’s too great to handle. Thank you.

wEDnESDaY 5 P.M.I live in the city of Milton and pay

3.2373 mills city tax. I pay 13.7633 mills county tax, same as county pays. They city has police, fire, parks and recreation, streets and storm water. I receive nothing from the county sheriff, streets or recreation. If I call the county about any of the above, I am told, “Call the city.” If Navarre and Pace know what is best, they will not incorporate. They will stay as they are. Earl, Milton.

get the whole story first

Dear Editor,In reference to the story

“Hotel fire leads to meth lab arrest,” we are disappointed your paper did not thoroughly investigate the story before going to print.

Here’s what happened. Because of the property being closely self-monitored, a watchful tenant notified staff a man ran from a motel room suspiciously and jumped into a car. The door to the room was open and there appeared to be smoke inside. A member of staff immediately ran into the room and called 911. The fire department and the media arrived shortly afterward. Nothing was found by anyone except one small black duffel bag, which had started to smoke and then burn. The bag was removed by the fire department and set upon a picnic table outside where it was extinguished. That was the extent of the meth lab being on the property. The fire marshal, Santa Rosa County Sheriff ’s Office and State Hotel and Restaurants all inspected and deemed the damage to be minimal. There was a small burn on the dresser. There were no other physical or chemical damage. The owner of this duffel bag was only on the property for minutes.

The room had not been rented to this person and the person it was rented to had just checked in the night before. Because of the actions of the Emerald Sands Inn, a fire was probably averted. No one from the media contacted the owner, manager or an employee before writing this story. We are pleased the suspect was apprehended.

In the future we request the media to get the whole store before disseminating it to the public. We work with many government agencies, churches, and civic organizations to insure the Emerald Sands Inn is a safe and secure environment.

Williams sentenced

for stalkingSpecial to the Press Gazette

State Attorney Bill Ed-dins announced Thursday that Judge Kelvin Wells

sentenced Charles Henry Wil-liams Jr. to five years in state prison followed by three years of probation on seven counts of

aggravated stalking by credible threat.

The charges of aggra-vated stalking arose after Williams abandoned his 15-year-old daughter in Wal-ton County, resulting in a child dependency proceed-ing and placement of the child with local foster par-ents, according to a news release. Williams then en-tered into a series of threat-ening telephone calls to the foster parents, their minor child, his child’s dependen-cy placement counselor, his child’s guardian ad-li-tem and relatives of those persons he threatened with death, sexual assault and other forms of physical harm if his child was not forwarded to him by airline travel. Williams would not return to Walton County to retrieve the child because he was a fugitive with war-rants from South Carolina and North Carolina.

The joint investigation was conducted by Walton County Sheriff ’s Office, Santa Rosa County Sher-iff ’s Office and Florida De-partment of Law Enforce-ment. The case was pros-ecuted by Assistant State Attorney Bobby Elmore. For more information, call Elmore at 585-7412.

“Everything is on the ta-ble,” Smith said. “Nobody is doing more to address carbon dioxide emissions than Southern Company. We’ve reduced emissions by 85 percent since 1992 despite a 30 percent in-crease in demand.”

Scrubbers, she said, a $587 million addition to their plants in 2009 at Plant Crist in Pensacola, played a key role in pollut-ant reduction. “Scrubbers are designed to remove up to 95 percent of sulfur dioxide emissions, and up to 80 percent of oxidized mercury emissions,” she said. “This innovative sys-tem produced the biggest single benefit for air qual-ity in Gulf Power’s history, slashing overall regulated emissions at the plant by

more than 95 percent. En-gineers designed and built the scrubber on a massive scale to encompass all of Plant Crist’s generators, which produce enough electricity to serve more than 275,000 residential customers (Gulf Power has a total of 436,000 customers).”

Smith described the scrubbing process as such: “Reclaimed water from Emerald Coast Utili-ties Authority, a nearby water treatment company, cools the emissions from the four generating units, which are then put through a swirling bath of crushed limestone. The gases react with limestone slurry and are neutralized, forming gypsum. Scrubbed emis-sions are released through

the stack, with steam evaporated during cool-ing. Barges transport the market-quality gypsum for commercial use in cement production and other man-ufacturing processes.

“We will continue to provide reliable and af-fordable electricity,” she said.

For now, Gulf Power is waiting on guidelines from the state.

“The EPA has one year to finalize these proposed guidelines, and the state has another year after that to decide how they would like to implement them,” Smith said. “We’ll have a more clear picture after those determinations are made of how this will di-rectly affect our energy production.”

Blackwater Canoe Rental. “We help each other out,”

he said. “Memorial Day was great for everyone.”

Vallianos said the weath-er did affect business, but “We do expect rain. We rely on rain to make sure the aquifer is refreshed and healthy.” Water levels are the best right now, he said, covering more stumps and logs along the river.

“This weekend will be great,” he said. “We have a party 100 deep. We’re all optimistic.”

A rainy start to the sea-son increases danger on the rivers when levels run high.

“A plan should always be made,” Vallianos said, “Check the weather before

going out.” Vallianos said the Ad-

ventures Unlimited web-site features danger levels divided into four colors. “Green means ‘all go.’ Yel-low means ‘caution.’ Or-ange means ‘adults only.’ Red means ‘don’t run’ at all.” He said they’ve had several days in red so far.

For days in orange, Val-lianos said Adventures Un-limited has an option for groups with children: white-water rafts. “We can put 7 to 8 adults with a couple of kids on a raft. Life jackets are required, and there’s no alcohol allowed,” he said. He also said if the water is high enough, he’s not going to let a child out at all. The direction of the water level

sways the danger level. “I prefer receding water

to rising water,” Vallianos said. With receding water, the river becomes safer as guests travel down the riv-er, he said.

Vallianos also said if the water levels make the river too dangerous or un-comfortable for guests, the ropes courses and zip-lines are another option. Despite the large amounts of rain, Vallianos said their cabins and ropes courses offset some of the business lost because of the weather. It’s happened, he said, that a party arriving at Adven-tures Unlimited found the water level too high and de-cided to take advantage of the zip-lines.

courthouse from page A1Hargraves referenced

design firm HOK’s 2001 memo addressed to the Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners. The memo compared the cost of “con-structing the courthouse on the downtown Milton site versus the cost of con-structing on grade at the East Milton jail site.” HOK compared costs for the foundations, substructure and superstructure and concluded, “the ultimate premium is a little over $1 million,” which Hargraves noted as a 3.6 percent pre-mium. However, the memo said, “This doesn’t consider the extra cost of a bridge at the jail or the costs associ-ated with moving away from

the ‘support structure’ of downtown Milton (lawyers, office space, etc).”

“This 3.6 percent is a ceil-ing, not a floor,” Hargraves said. He said there are unique incentives in the city, such as the use of sales tax.

“There are a number of options Milton can offer to any cost increase,” he said. “Currently, there are 520 public parking spaces avail-able. Plans drawn in 2001 added 300 (spaces) adja-cent to the courthouse.” He also said long-term expan-sion called for a multi-level garage.

Addressing concerns about traffic bottle-necking at the bridge, Hargraves said the U.S. 90 and East

Milton sites would see new traffic controls. “We feel traffic is a problem that will travel with the courthouse.”

Though nothing is set in stone yet, Hargraves said he’ll be presenting what his task force found to the county during its commis-sioner meeting Monday, with Randy Jorgenson, city planning director, in atten-dance as well. He expects the city will approve a reso-lution to request the county add the downtown location to November’s ballot. Fi-nally, the week’s agenda should conclude with Mayor Guy Thompson attending the county commission’s regular meeting Thursday, Hargraves said.

Tubing the river is a popular

summer event. Many will enjoy

the rivers and creeks in the

coming weeks.

PLAN AHEADTO KEEP HEALTHYMEALSAND SNACKS READYTO GO

DEAR DOCTOR K: between my job and kids, i rarely have time to prepare andsit down to a healthy meal. i’ve had my fill of fast food and energy bars. any sug-gestions?DEAR READER: it certainly is easy to eat badly. For one thing, as you say, many

of us have very hectic schedules. Fast food is appealing because it’s fast. but fastfood is often unhealthy.you don’t have to sacrifice nutrition when you’re on the go. i spoke to Dr.

michelle Hauser, a nutrition educator and clinical fellow in medicine at Harvardmedical school, and registered dietitian Kathy mcmanus, director of the Depart-ment of Nutrition for Harvard-affiliated brigham andWomen’s Hospital. They of-fered the following tips to keep meals and snacks healthy when you’re in a hurry:-- PLAN AHEAD. Plan out meals and snacks for the week. make a list and go

shopping. Then make time in your schedule to cook or prepare the foods.-- COOK IN BATCHES. cook extra food to save time later. you can do this with

entire meals or with meal elements. For example, cook a large batch of brownrice, then portion out and freeze the extra. The rice reheats in the microwave inminutes.my wife and i do this a lot. last night we had what my niece (when she was a

child) called “uncle’s Famous Hamburgers.” i mixed my secret ingredients into themeat about six weeks ago, and froze six meals’worth of patties -- each meal twopatties in its own zippered freezer bag. We’ll have them every week or two. samething with “uncle’s Famous spaghetti sauce.”an hour on a sunday afternoonsaves many hours down the road.-- EAT NUTRIENT-DENSE FOODS. Nutrient-dense foods are the ones with the

most vitamins and minerals and the fewest calories. Try legumes (beans, lentils),dairy products (low-fat yogurt, eggs), avocados, leafy greens (kale, spinach),vegetables (brussels sprouts, mushrooms, bell peppers), seeds (flax, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower), nuts, whole grains (barley, oats, quinoa, brown rice), fish andpoultry.-- TRY A SMOOTHIE. Toss as many ingredients as you like into a blender,

and you’ll have a drink that can be used for a meal or a snack throughout theday. Plain yogurt and frozen berries and bananas are a good place to start. butsmoothies don’t have to be fruit-based. Vegetables (think carrots, beets and spin-ach) make delicious smoothies as well. Don’t believe it? Try it. (still, i prefer fruit.)-- KEEP SNACKS SIMPLE. choose just one or two ingredients. some satisfy-

ing and nutritious pairings include plain, nonfat Greek yogurt and a few nuts; atablespoon of peanut butter and an apple; or chopped vegetables and a quar-ter-cup of hummus. Keep snacks packed in your pantry or refrigerator, ready tograb and go.you’ve got to have chips sometimes? There suddenly are lots of delicious chips

on the market that have no unhealthy trans fats and are very low in unhealthysaturated fats. but, in moderation, nuts still are healthier than even“healthy”chips. and, for me, more delicious.

Dear bruce: i rolled ira funds ($26,500)from a 3 percent annuity (time had elapsed,no penalty) to another broker that investedit in preferred bank stock where i would earnapproximately 6.25 percent. i was used toseeing the 3 percent gain on my statementsand did not see howmuch that company wasmaking. Now, with my new broker, i receivea quarterly statement, indicating the fees heis debiting frommy ira funds, and i receivednotice of an annual fee that the companydebited frommy ira.

is that legal for them to withdraw fundsfrommy ira? i thought the broker would bepaid from the investment company“behindthe scenes”and not directly for my ira.Wheni opened the account, his correspondencedisclosed a number of other services he pro-vides -- review my entire financial situationannually, etc. -- which i have no need for atthis point.

i did ask about the fees and if i would“net” the 6.25 percent, and if i recall correctly,he said i should. i didn’t expect a quarterlystatement and withdrawal frommy ira. --reader

Dear reaDer: i don’t see anything illegal.some brokers charge a fee; other brokers takea commission. it’s up to you to determinewhat they are doing and what are you com-fortable with. it is certainly legal to withdrawfunds from the ira.

you mentioned you“thought” the brokerwould get paid by the company“behind thescenes.”you have to sit down with a brokerand ask very specifically how he is paid, howmuch, on what basis and so forth.

live and learn; that is about the size of it.by and large, since this is a recent proposition, your education wasn’t an expensive one.

Dear bruce:What are your thoughtsabout the world currency being changedfrom the u.s. dollar to a new world currency?if you believe this will happen, when do youthink this may take place? Not having muchincome, i try to buy silver whenever possible.i look for it in estate sales and other placeswhere i may be able to buy it below the cur-rent value of silver. -- b.m.

Dear b.m.: let’s take your questions oneat a time. Do i think it would be a tragedyif the world adopted a different currency?absolutely! and we should do everything wecan to protect the integrity of the dollar, sothe dollar remains the currency of the world.

as to you investing in silver, that’s anothermatter. you mentioned you don’t have muchincome, but i don’t think silver is the placeto be. it may or may not go up in value, butsilver never produces a dividend. you have tosell it to make a profit.

i would think more seriously about thestock market, and i know this turns somepeople gray when they hear the word, butmoney properly invested in the marketplace,in my opinion, is still the place to be.

This week is National Garden Club Week and the Milton Garden Club celebrated with speakers on mulches, butterfly gardening, and invasive plants, culminating in a plant and garage sale Satur-day. Wednesday, Milton Mayor Guy Thompson read a proclama-tion at the MGC.

“When you volunteer time for the club, you volunteer time to make the community what it should be,” he said. “We have a natural beauty and we have to show that,” Thompson said. “In high school, I was close to the garden club,” he said. Thomp-son said beautification efforts in the city strengthen the eco-nomic base.

Sonya Robinson, president of the MGC, said, “It keeps young people here.” Thompson spoke of future plans to continue beautification efforts along Dog-wood Drive and expanding the boardwalk to Carpenter’s Park. Lee Willingham, the landscaper hired by the city to oversee the project, said a concept impor-tant to him was the blending of landscaping throughout the city.

“To me, that says we’ve got a

plan. The city has come up with a master plan.” Willingham went on to detail the flora used along the U.S. Highway 90 medi-ans and roadside, and the other places downtown spruced up with natural decor.

Willingham said he went with a hybrid grass called “celebra-tion,” a mix of common Bermu-da and 419 Bermuda, the latter used in sports fields. He said the combination means a fast recovery rate and few fertiliza-tion requirements. He did say, “It will go dormant in winter.” Willingham cautioned against over watering grass.

“You need to stress grass a bit to encourage deep root growth.” Willingham said the perenni-als he added have an alternate blooming cycle, so they might all bloom this year or only half. The purple flowering flax lily, purple pixie, a pink drift rose, and Indian Hawthorne were his choices for foliage. As far as trees, Willing-ham said he went with Bosque elms, tree-form camellia, Ea-gleston hollies, maraschino cherry trees, and crepe myrtles. Willingham said he needs trees prone to growing upwards, not outwards to stay off the road. He also said the ones he used shed small leaves so the waste would

be minimal. Willingham also went over the irrigation system installed, which will cut down on water waste.

“I chose a smart system,” he said, the kind used in golf courses. With it, Willingham said, he can monitor and adjust water flow with his smartphone. He said if some kind of accident breaks a spout, the system will diagnose the problem through compar-ing standard pressure and volt-

age, shut off the

flow to the spout, and email him the situation.

Willingham said, “The sys-tem will also wirelessly commu-nicate with any weather station to shut off if it’s raining or windy.” He said he can also manually do so from his phone. According to Willingham, the grass and plant beds are zoned separately since they have different water requirements. “You won’t drive in the rain and see irrigation,” Willingham said.

Last fall, my daughter Emily got married. She’s my youngest of my three girls and moved the furthest away. She now lives with her husband, Chaz, in Twentyninepalms, Calif., as he is a marine and stationed in this beautiful dessert; a tiny

culture shock for my girl to experience being across the country from her family. Dan, her sisters

and I traveled to California for the very first time to see them married in Twentyninepalms, so we were not able to celebrate with extended family and friends.

Thus, we are planning a wedding shower for them this month where family and friends can give them their blessing and help fill their home with the essentials they will need.

In preparation of these festivities, I am purging and cleaning. Three weeks ago, I donated a couch. I am not sure what I was thinking. It didn’t occur to me I might need the extra seating since I have my parents, Emily and Chaz, Chaz’s parents and our favorite friend, (and previous German exchange student), Ellen coming to stay for a week. This exciting time will be filled with movie watching, shopping, beach going, dining and heartfelt future planning over cups of coffee at the kitchen table. I’m majorly excited about this happy time.

But what about the couch?

Dan and I have moved rooms around, purged filing cabinets, cleaned window sills, bleached the front porch, had the azaleas cut back and yet I still had not addressed the seating issue.

Wednesday was the day. I was going about my usual routine and felt the stress rising. Finally, about 2 p.m. I said a hasty prayer: God, I need a couch. Please let something good come out of today’s mess.

I went home and found a Facebook posting by a friend: Does anyone need a couch?

I typed in haste: Yes! I need one desperately.

I then received a phone call almost immediately and found out he was giving it away for free; it’s in good condition … it was located on the back of a truck in front of my church.

Thursday morning a friend walks into my house and asks me, “Oh, you got a new couch? Where did you get it?”

I smiled and answered, “God gave it to me.”

Some say He works in mysterious ways. I just believe He hears me when I pray, even in haste.

The 8.1-mile Blackwater Heritage State Trail has everything the outdoor enthusiast desires. The asphalt trail is 12 feet wide, offering picnic tables, restrooms, water fountains, cycle rentals and a playground.

It is also valuable asset that provides a local, inexpensive opportunity to exercise.

The trail is ideally marked at every mile on the east side of the path by half-mile intervals. Perfect for runners in training or for those seeking a place to exercise. The running club of Milton’s Anytime Fitness uses the

trail regularly for club members to meet together and exercise.

70-year-old Jerry Medders participates in the local running club because it is an inexpensive means of exercising and for the motivation he gets from being part of a group. “I run a lot of races,” Medders said. “I am 70

years old and want to make it to 71.”

Medders just completed the William Lake 10K Challenge last Saturday.

The group of runners organized by Anytime Fitness provides an opportunity for all levels of fitness to participate and enjoy the beautiful outdoor trail. Walkers, joggers, and runners all participated in the Tuesday evening run. There are an average of 15 runners per week according to Barry Brinker, who organizes the activity and is onsite for Anytime Fitness members.

“A lot of times it is just better to exercise in a group. It is encouraging and motivating,” Brinker said. “It is a way for the community to get active together.”

Brian Groenenboom, 39, runs as a way to relief stress. “I run several times a week to stay in shape and to relief stress,” he said. “The Blackwater Trail is very nice. I normally run three to four miles on it.”

The trail is designed to follow the path of the former Florida and Alabama railroad, which was owned, by Bagdad Land and Lumber Company. The path provided the link between the lumberyard in Bagdad and rail facilities in Whirley, Ala. As World

War II developed, the rail connection between the two sites was not needed or useful anymore and was closed.

In 1940, the rail line was reestablished for the purpose of providing a method for the delivery of

aviation fuel into Whiting Field.

Currently, the trail provides a beautiful picturesque location for physical activity traveling through the quaint town of Milton and into the beautiful countryside.

Special to the Press Gazette

The days and weeks around the Memorial Day Holiday traditionally produce some of the larger and more difficult wildfires for the Florida Forest Service’s Blackwater District.

This is the fifth part in a six-part series looking back at some of the more memorable fire events that have occurred around the holiday in the past few years.

Avalon hangar fire, May 29, 2013

With resources spread thin battling a series of fires on the north end of Santa Rosa County, the last thing Florida Forest Service firefighters needed on May 29, 2013, was another one – especially on the Garcon Point peninsula. Well, they got it.

Garcon Point is a notorious strip of land where residential development is mixed in with volatile fuels and thick, muddy terrain. It has been home to some of the more difficult fires in our three-county district

for as long as anyone can recall and this is the second fire in this series that has taken place on the point.

The Avalon Hangar Fire (155 acres) started just west of Garcon Point Road near the intersection with Avalon Boulevard. Within 25 minutes of receiving the call, the initial attack unit had a line around the fire. Given the 15 mph winds, he radioed to the dispatch center that the line was unlikely to hold. He was right. The stiff southeast breeze carried sparks and embers across Avalon Boulevard and into 500 acres of grass and pine trees. It was time for more tractors.

“As dry as it was that day, one line isn’t likely to

hold,” said Ashley Baxley, senior forest ranger for Blackwater Forestry Center and initial division supervisor and second incident commander on the fire. “It held for a little while at the road but it was spotting 200-300 feet that day. It’s all light, flashy fuels with gallberry and yaupon down there so it takes a lot to stop the fire.”

The next few tractors on scene had their hands full trying to contain the fire as it advanced north and west toward Garcon Field airport and the homes on Michael Drive north of there. As crews became available from other parts of the district, they were funneled toward Garcon and the Avalon

Hangar Fire. Garcon Field — the

origin for the hangar part of the fire’s name — proved to be crucial in stopping the fire. Often times, a natural or manmade barrier such as a river, creek or highway — or in this case an airstrip — provides wildland firefighters and their structure firefighter counterparts a better vantage point to stop the fire.

“If that airfield wasn’t there, I don’t know if we would’ve stopped as quick,” Baxley said. “It gave the structure guys access to help cool the head of the fire down and allowed a good holding point.”

By the end of the night — about seven hours later

— there were 10 tractor/plow units from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties as well as the neighboring Chipola District on scene, two brush trucks, a myriad of overhead personnel as well as a helicopter.

The helicopter played a key role in stopping the fire as the pilot was able to use nearby water ways and ponds to dip water into a 300-gallon bucket and help slow the fire’s progress by dousing hot spots ahead of the tractors. On this fire, the helicopter made 50 drops in less than two hours.

“It’s almost mandatory (to have a helicopter) down

there,” Baxley said. “It can work in a couple of ways. The pilot can drop water on the head of the fire to cool it and

allow us (tractor/plow operators) to get closer to the fire and plow it out but he can also serve as a second set of eyes. That pilot can scout ahead of the tractors for danger and also drop water on us if we get to hot or if we get in trouble.”

All in all, what could have been a very damaging fire was kept to a minimum despite resources and manpower being taxed to the limits.

Nobody delivers like we do.

physical evidence linking this fire to an arsonist was found, sometimes the lack of evidence helps point firefighters to the cause by process of elimination. With no lightning, no debris burns and no signs of equipment cause in the vicinity, the only likely cause could be arson.

investigators and firefighters to prove. Short of catching someone in the act or a full confession, much of the evidence is destroyed in the fire and the cases go cold. Coast Guard offers boaters safety class in MiltonSpecial to the Press Gazette

As the summer boating season approaches, now is the perfect time to take a boater’s safety class. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1-8, “Guardians

of the Blackwater,” will offer its premier boater safety class, About Boating Safely, at the City of Milton Fire Department on Saturday, June 14, 2014. This eight-hour class covers basic legal requirements for boaters, boating

safety, elements of boat handling, as well as how to handle some common boating emergencies. There is an examination at the end of the class. A passing score will make the boater eligible for a State of Florida Boating ID

card, a requirement for boaters younger than 26 years of age to operate a boat alone in state waters.

The class will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 14, in the Training Room of the City of Milton Fire

Department, 5321 Stewart St. in Milton. The class materials cost $35 per person, or $35 per family (up to four) sharing a book. To register, or with any questions, call FSO-PE Jerry Damico at 791-1266.
