Skill - Chest CatchKey Coaching Points: Elbows tight in by side, with palms facing away from body and fingers towards the

ground. Keep eyes open and focused on the ball at all times. Moving towards the ball. Allow ball to hit chest / belly. Bring arms and hands into chest to keep ball into a secure position

Common Errors: Finger pointing down to the ground Palms facing away from the body Closing the eyes as the ball approaches. Leaning backwards as the ball approaches, this may result in the ball bouncing of the

player’s chest Arms and hands too far apart, this may result in the ball falling between the player’s

hands.

Basic Skill Practice Drill

Chest / Body Catch

Divide group into 2/3 groups depending on numbers. Throw ball to first person in group to catch. Each player in turn returns the ball to thrower.

Key Coaching Points: If striking with right hand, left shoulder, hip and foot is pointing towards target, or

striking with left is opposite. – Stepping forward gives balance and good balance gives better power and accuracy.

Support hand holds ball in front of the body and cannot move. Strike through the middle of the ball & follow through Using the fingertips (Ball must be struck underneath) for short distance or fist for long

distance

Common Errors: Not stepping forward in order to achieve balance From balance player gains power and accuracy Not aligned towards target with shoulder, hip and foot e.g Right H/P then left shoulder

pointing at target, Left hand holding ball & Left foot steps forward Moving or throwing ball with the supporting hand to strike with other arm Not following through with striking hand

Basic Skill Practice One player on each cone, hand pass around the square. To Ensure players use both hands change direction Left foot steps forward for right hand H/P Right foot steps forward for left hand H/PPlayers perform 2 circuits going clockwise with Right hand & anti with left

Co-Operative Fun GamePiggy in the Middle (Practice skill by introducing movement) 3 people take a cone each, with one cone free, with a ‘’piggy’’ in the middle.

2 Rules – Player in possession cannot move

The ball cannot be passed diagonally across the square. To challenge players to make themselves avail for a pass by moving into space to receive a H/P

The player in possession can only pass to the left or the right & therefore the free cone is always filled.

If player drops the ball they become the new Piggy If players give a H/p that cannot be caught thy become the new Piggy If Player in the middle tries to intercept the ball the H/per is the new Piggy Change Piggy after 10 successful hand passesTo increase the challenge for older kids Give players 1 seconds to receive & make a decision who to give a H/P to Force players to only use their weaker hand to H/P

Key Points Always ask Q’s to ensure understanding

Key kicking pts from the Punt Kick are repeated The eyes are on the ball & therefore head is down What part of the foot do we kick with – Ans laces What hand holds the ball for the left leg etc etc Direction of the non kicking leg shoulder is vital For a right legged kick the left shoulder is pointing at the target / left leg right

shoulder

Common Error’s Watch each player for

Is the player stepping into his Kick-Take 4 steps Player releasing the ball from the correct hand Is the toe pointing down Is the head down & the eyes looking at the ball Is the player following through with his Kick towards the target Is the players non kicking shoulder pointing directly at target

Skill Practise Basic Technique Practise

Players at a cone in groups 2 or 3 max with a 2nd cone 10/15 meters further out Players solo out to & round the furthest cone where as they turn they hook kick back

to the next player Ensure each players shoulder on his/her non kicking side is pointing directly back to

the next player The kicking foot starts off pointing down and the players kicks behind the laces All players must become bilateral & therefore they must practise with both sides

Co-Operative Fun GameFootball Rounder’s to practise the Hook Kick

Pick 2 teams and number each player 1 to etc for a kicking order The Kicking player has 3 attempts to catch the ball before kicking. No catch then no

kick To ensure good balance and kicking technique each player must take 4 steps before

kicking the ball Ball must be kicked (not tipped) into the playing area There are 1st , 2nd , 3rd and homes bases where a player may (but is not required) stop

and is safe There cannot be two players on the same base nor can player pass out a stationery

team mate at the next base If player Or Cone (cone player is running to) is tagged before reaching the cone then

the player is out If ball is caught on the full by the catching team then the entire kicking team is out &

teams change sides A score is awarded for a player getting home safely Or Hook Kicking the ball over

the goal posts Award 2 pts for Hook Kicking a score using the lazy (Weaker) leg Position goal at right angles to the kicker to force a hook kick for a score

W – Shape of index finger and thumb, and spread rest of fingers Eyes to stay open and focused on the ball throughout Jump by leaping off strong leg, with knee raise, with an emphasis on speed to get as high

as possible. Catch behind the ball.

Common Errors: Player not getting the knee up in front, may result in player not jumping to their full

potential. Not extending the arms fully may result in players not being able to catch at the highest

possible point Jumping too early or too late

Basic Skill Practice Drill: Overhead Catch (Statue of Liberty) One person adapts the ‘’statue of liberty’’ position holding the ball high in one arm. Participants then have to run out and perform overhead catch Once they catch the ball it is then returned to the ‘’statue’’ Progression: Increase height of ball, Increase distance, Bounce off the ground in order

for participant to improve timing of jumping

COACH

Skills - Pick Up

Key Points: Always ask Q’s to ensure understanding

The player must been the knee’s to low Tilt the head forward & down towards the ground Place toe under the ball & left the ball into hands

Fingers pointing towards the ground

Common Errors: Watch each player for

Plant foot toes inline or behind the football Player not bending the knee’s – cannot get low without bending the knee’s in a

forward direction Hands touching the ball

Skill Practise: Basic Technique Practise

Players at a cone in groups 2 Or 3 max with a 2nd cone 10/15 meters further out A stationery ball is placed halfway between both cones Each player races out and picks up the ball before rounding the far cone and placing

the ball stationery on the ground again for the next player to continue Important players become bilateral – players must both feet so have players alternate

between Right & Left

COACH

Skill Practise: Ball Rolling Away from Player

Players at a cone in groups 3 Or 4 max with a 2nd cone 10/15 meters further out All players (except last player)spread their leg as wide as possible to form a pyramid

shape The last player rolls the ball forcibly between the legs of his group so that ball is

racing away from the 1st player This forces the 1st player to catch up with the ball and pick it up as it is rolling away

from the player

The player solos back to back of the group and as the new last player continues the drill

COACH

Fun Game Musical Pickup – To practise the skill by introducing Movement & Opposition

Form a large circle (depends on number of players) which your players will be running around

Place footballs (1 less ball then No of players) spread out with the circle The coach gives 3 calls

Cork = Forward full speed, Dublin = Reverse, Kerry = Race in & picks up a ball

Skill Practise Basic Technique Practise

Ball between each pair kicking over and back to each other Ensure each player is stepping into their kick – start 4 steps behind their cone and run

into their kick

Fun Game Empty the square

Mark out 2 or more squares Place a cone back 10-14 yards back from the square 1 team in each square (max 5 per team) Team nominates a kicker He or she takes stands at the cone The kicker must punt kick the ball into their square, if the ball is caught before it hits
